Nobody wants to leave a bad review, and no one wants to post a photo of themselves looking…read moreterrible... but this haircut was a reminder that you can't go just anywhere and get a curly haircut. I had a bob, and wanted to go shorter (to what I would describe as a really long pixie). I had a folder of inspiration images, which my stylist and I looked at together. My haircut was $55, and I feel pretty bad about how I look. When I look in the mirror, I have a lot of poorly shaped volume in front, with no hair peeking out from behind/below the ears to balance it out. I'm a huge fan of wet cutting, but it takes an experienced stylist to understand the shape, and how a cut is going to translate once it's dry. The initial haircut was also unintentionally asymmetrical: longer and fuller on one side than the other. I'm just not sure the Aveda school/Aveda method provides enough education or experience with every hair type. Yes, I could go back and ask them to fix it, but (1) I'm not sure making it shorter is going to help things, and (2) even if I had a clear vision for how to improve this cut, I'm not confident that this salon can execute it. I did a little self-trim in the mirror to correct the asymmetry -- something I was willing to do because I felt like it couldn't get any worse. It'll grow back.

Having a bad hair day can be traumatic, and trusting a new person to not EFF it up comes with some nervousness, but I was so comfortable trusting Pastel. A few weeks ago, after reading the reviews and having been familiar with the Frederic Fekkai…read moresalons, I came for a 1" trim to my long-time, blunt-cut, medium-length (3 inches below the chin), slightly angled bob, beveled a bit underneath at the nape. It was quickly dried and styled in center or side parts, with lots of volume, lift and swing. Elegant and easy. Derek said he couldn't understand me. I should have left immediately. What I have now is an inexplicable cut, 2-5 " off, barely chin length, huge amounts of hair removed, wispy layers everywhere, and texturizing. He has activated a mass of waves and curls never seen before. From the front, the shape is a cartoonish wide diamond. From the sides, a fat wedge. This is the opposite of what is required for copious, European, fine, porous hair with a nape curl and minimal wave. Derek basically has created a White girl Afro. He somehow dried it beautifully, disguising the weird architectural structure by using a tiny brush on myriad narrow strands, drying them straight, and contorting them via elaborate manual sculpting techniques, product and nearly an hour of work. Maybe he planned to do twice-weekly blowdries on it. I have spent many days and dollars elsewhere experimenting with product, techniques and professional advice while attempting to cope. Derek pleasantly refunded the charges and apologized for the "inconvenience." This is far worse than inconvenient.
