Wow, amazing service! My parents enjoyed their bikes, which had been serviced at Chainwheel Drive, but were stolen. This reverse version of me as a kid getting my bike stolen and their support made me want to give some of it back, but I'm no longer in the area so felt helpless. But one call with Ian and he worked it out - selected matching bikes, found them in stock, adjusted each of them, accessorized them (big locks), and even delivered them. I doubt that's something they normally do, but he accommodated everything for me over the phone. Since then they've had some good rides on their nice new bikes. I hear from others that Chainwheel Drive is a good shop - I look forward to visiting in-person some day. read more

I am 52 years old and grew up in Saint Pete; Chainwheel Drive was a staple since I was a child BMX rider. Throughout the years, I have literally bought tens of thousands of dollars in bikes and parts from Chainwheel Drive. Sadly, I left the store today for the last time and will never spend another dollar with them. Today, I entered the store to purchase parts for my mountain bike. An employee walked up to me and asked if I had a mask, I said no and informed the employee that I was fully vaccinated. The employee told me it is the store policy that masks are worn inside and asked me to leave. I obliged and walked out. Since the pandemic began, we have learned much about COVID, especially that vaccines work. The CDC and State of Florida removed the requirements for indoor masking, but, for some reason, Chainwheel Drive wants to embrace a stringent stance. I got it, it's your business, your rules....I'm a 23 year military veteran and served to protect the rights of our Country and it is well within the rights of a private business to ask me to leave for ANY reason. I just wish to communicate to the owner of Chainwheel Drive that actions have consequences. I'll take my business elsewhere. read more

Introducing "Gil", the crappiest sales person on planet earth! - went to Chainwheel Drive. The first guy I spoke to literally turned his back on me and went and hid in a backroom. Not one moment of communication, no help, no hello, nothing. After all I was just a lowly customer wanting to buy a 10-speed bike in the $1,500 - $2,000 range. I asked another salesman behind the counter who the rude salesman was and I was told his name was "Gil". When I told him of the rudeness the counter person told me, "Gil does that a lot". I decided I do not want to spend my money in a place where Gil is presented to represent the company to the public. If Chainwheel Drive wants to continue to pay an employee who hides from any customer who wishes to do business, that is their business. My decision to never go into Chainwheel Drive the rest of my life is my business. I wish I could rate this place ZERO. read more

I love this place. It brings me back to a child's place where I would jump on my bike and the world was at my feet. This is the super store of all things biking and we need more stores like this around. KIDS need to be outside more and as adults this is the best exercise so when you need to purchase a bike or something for it this is the spot. 2 locations fair prices and great service. Nice bike shop! Looked to be very well outfitted. We came by to rent bikes while in the area. They had what we needed (2-hybrid/comfort) and were quite accommodating and patient in getting us set up and squared away. If you buy bikes at Target, this place isn't for you, they don't sell garbage. But if you want real quality, you can't find any place better. They have a great selection from the modest to the highest levels of cycling technology available. Their repair shop is really capable and can even custom build anything you could possibly want. I rented a hybrid bike today and it was a very good experience. The price was fair and all the staff was very helpful. They were quite content for me to leave my car in the parking lot while spent the day riding to Clearwater Beach and back, etc. They provided a very nice helmet and a very hurky bike lock so I was not worrried when I stopped for lunch and locked up the bike. Unfortunately, I tweaked the rim on the ride back by to the shop by bumping a curb. They noticed the damage and were very fair about the repair cost. They actually seemed to feel bad for me that they had to charge me for the damage. I would definitely rent there again - but get a full suspension bike for my hurky build... I noticed other customers in the shop that were being served quite well with the sales folks really making an effort to understand what their biking needs were. Large shop. Lots of Selection. The location is good if you want to get some exercise before and after you get out to Clearwater Beach. it is about a 10 mile round trip from the shop to Pier 60. A big plus is riding over the bridges which have dedicated bike paths. read more

While traveling from Michigan to southern Florida, we had an accident that did a lot of damage to one of our bikes. We stopped in Clearwater for two days and took the bike to Chainwheel Drive to see if they could make it usable on very short notice. We visited this shop 2x before finally deciding on which bike to purchase. Both salesman we worked with were amazing. It is clear they are passionate about their trade and know every detail of what they sell. Cody helped get us started in our first visit and spent an hour with use making sure we knew everything we should about what bikes would fit how we were going to ride. I've been frequenting a few local bike shops around Clearwater for the past few years, and finally pulled the trigger for a new triathlon bike over at Chainwheel a few months ago. I figure a great review was in order given some recent exceptional service dealing with that purchase. Positives: - Employees are always available to help answer questions, make decent suggestions, and ring you up - Shop has a good mix of high end (Specialized Venge ViAS) road, mid/lower tier road, cross, tri, mountain, and touring bikes for all levels of rider & experience types - Occasional exceptional sales & discounts that often surpass lowest online (amazon/nashbar/ performance) prices for some bikes, tools, and accessories - Clean store - Great fitting support when testing out new bikes as they really helped me dial in a comfortable position and find the right size/bike given my odd proportions - Although slightly more expensive than average, their service department is exceptional, with great work every time, prompt communication, and prompt turnarounds (w. scheduled appointments) - no hesitation bringing in a high end carbon fibre/ultegra/DuraAce/red/Super Record/Di2 bike - After buying a bike from them 2 months ago, I came in for my 60 day service, highlighted a few smaller issues, and they swapped out/upgraded the parts that weren't reliably working 100% of the time without question after re-tuning - As a specialized shop, they flawlessly handled a recall on a bike I bought prior to coming to Florida even though I didn't purchase it from them - Tons of involvement with local community races, shop rides, local fundraisers, and other local events Negatives: - Twice had to correct prices for purchases up front (both within 10% of stickered price, but still a nuisance to credit back). read more

This is an incredible place. I was visiting from out of town but felt like this would be my bike shop if I lived in Clearwater. I called to rent a bike and never expected to be expertly fitted for a brand new bike of similar quality to what I ride back home. I happened to come in during a spring sale so I even picked up a few supplies to take back with me. Clearwater is a beautiful place to ride. Visited the mother in law and need a triathlon bike so I could get a ride in and stick with my training plan. Found these guys who not only were able to rent me a very good triathlon bike, but took the time to bring me in to their fitting studio to make sure I was fit properly. They also helped me plan out a ride to do, giving me several options and even printing out a map and directions. Very friendly, knowledgeable, and courteous staff.
