OVERPRICED, OVERHYPED, OVER-PRIVILEGED. You just lost a very loyal customer. Sad to stop supporting this business, but enough is enough. I love to support small business, but I've become less and less pleased with Chakra Bowls as time has gone on. The number of times I went in person, everything just seemed chaotic with long waits, whether it be when I was behind a crowd of 20 people to be fulfilled by 2 people behind the counter OR with just 1 person in front of me. Sometimes the bowl's consistencies have been literally just water. That's unacceptable. And another time I ordered food to-go for me and my friends, and the girl behind the counter straight up forgot to make a bowl for me; and that is a lot of money for me, especially as a college student. (Also, head's up, the hummus and cucumber toast is also borderline revolting. I hope they also stopped making chia pudding.) As I am on here, I honestly don't understand the good reviews, as bad as that sounds. Probably because there isn't anywhere else to go around here for anything healthy as sad as that is, but I'm from Manhattan and as I have seen my father maintain a well-known five-star restaurant for decades, I know what service means, especially after having worked for him. This place falls flat in nearly e v e r y regard. I REALLY don't understand the "G*psy" reference. That is a SLUR as previous reviewers have pointed out that truly erases the struggles that Romani women have endured over history and yet its name is kept. Why? To put light on the neglected group, it is estimated that 80% of Romanis (derogatorily known as 'g*psies') were killed in the Holocaust. So, no, I do not want to eat a smoothie bowl that jabs at this minority group and further perpetuate White supremacy. The use of the word seems to flow right in with the owner's borderline cultural appropriation as well as the privilege she has WITH being a cisgender White woman. I don't think I even need to dig into the name "Chakra Bowls"; there is not even a slight nod to Indians whom this concept was stolen from anywhere in the store, at least not from what I have seen. Chakras are unique to the philosophy and religions of India. Not a White woman in upstate New York. As well as using "tribe" of their "good vibe tribe"...tribes are serious, societal structures for Native Americans, not a simple word for you to steal as you please to describe those who slurp down overpriced smoothies. Not to mention that Native Americans, like Romanis, have also been the subjects of White-led genocides. Truly, what is this owner trying to do? In the end this café is beyond culturally unaware and ignorant, all the while pretending that it IS in fact culturally aware and woke and trendy. Perhaps the people of Poughkeepsie just don't see that. However, to be so detached from being politically correct signals a vast amount of privilege in the one perpetuating it. And "Señorita" for a menu item? I'm truly not surprised. It seems that she is tokenizing non-White concepts in an attempt to be 'HIP' and dare I say the flower crown girl who goes to Coachella (in a Native American headdress). You never needed to use the words "G*psy", "Chakra", "tribe", and "Señorita" in your establishment. NOBODY forced you to do so. And yet you have. Another thing, I don't particularly enjoy how they legit lie on their website. "We refuse to compromise on quality in our restaurant. That's why we source our fresh ingredients from local farmers' markets." No. I've seen the owner and employees walk in with bags upon bags from Stop & Shop. Even in the photo at the bottom of the page on their "Menu" tab shows reused boxes of Dole products to deliver bowls to healthcare workers, affirming that these in fact aren't ingredients from farmers' markets. WHY LIE? If they are truly buying produce from farmers' markers, why are they not gladly providing us with the name of it? They advertise for Laughing Gut and North River, so why not name these farmers' markets that could benefit from the free publicity? However, even as all of this has happened, I have felt as though it is still important to support local businesses, especially those led by women. Chakra Bowls was slated to come to my college campus (Vassar, less than FIVE minutes down a single street) as a dining option since we have all been mandated to remain on campus during the pandemic. They never showed. That was the last straw for me and it's what is motivating me to write this today. That kind of behavior is beyond pathetic and embarrassing. To say that I and my friends were disappointed would be an understatement. Perhaps one of the only true healthy options in the nearby vicinity and they don't even come to support students who have been confined to their campus? Again this business owner seems to be dangerously unaligned with her business and reality. There's a coffee bowl that is delish but mostly I have the quinoa bowls or salad bowls and lunch is always super tasty and nutritious. So happy this great little cafe opened with excellent smoothies and lots of delightful vegan selections. Today I enjoyed an Earth Bowl salad with edamame, almonds and green goddess dressing while my companion described her whole grain toast with bananas and peanut butter and a House Party smoothie. No matter what your diet- vegan, paleo or other I think you would be able to find something yummy. I am a huge fan of smoothie bowls. I eat them nearly every day (most are home made). A lot of people on here are saying it is "over priced" however, all smoothie bowls tend to be anywhere between $11-15 so this place is average priced. CHAKRA IS DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE MONEY THO!!! Like I said I've had many bowls to compare it to. First off: they didn't offer many different options for their bowls, there were about 6 to choose from. I got the mermaid bowl and had to change just about everything in, and on it because I didn't like what it came with. I don't like anything that was set for the other 5 bowls either. Second: the portion sizes are very small in comparison to other bowl places such as playa bowls or boost bowls for example which was very disappointing. I absolutely was not happy about driving 30mins to this place, paying $13 for food, and leaving still absolutely hungry! Third: THEY WERE BEYOND WATERY!!!! Regular Smoothies aren't even as water as these bowls were. Smoothie bowls are supposed to be very thick so you feel like your EATING it not DRINKING it. My mom said her bowl was like "eating soup". Needless to say we were not happy about our experience what's so ever. Our choices were limited, our portions were unsatisfying, and the bowl all together was just sad. The owners have such an amazing spirit and the energy of the place is great.If it was not unrealistic I would eat here everyday. I think the serving size is just enough for the bowl and their fresh squeezed juices are delicious. I did try the apricot quinoa bar and that was really good. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in the fall, and I had a double mastectomy in December. While I am recovering, I was so happy to find Chakra Bowls. The smoothie bowls always leave me feeling better. I'm on a restricted diet, and it is so wonderful that everything in the café is something I can eat! The bowls are so beautiful, and the café is so charming that a visit always lifts my spirit. Great addition to Arlington! Portion size for the açaí bowl is better than other similar places I've been to . Price was a little high but worth it once we got our food and tasted the high quality ingredients. In addition to the acai bowl we had avocado toast and it was delicious. Definitely worth the cost for the clean, friendly environment and fresh ingredients. Plenty of parking was a bonus too! It is ABSURD how little food you get for your money. How appropriate that their prices aren't advertised on the wall menu, they must be embarrassed. There's nothing wrong with their food, but it's not special and it's a total rip off. If prices are high due to rent or overhead, I'd suggest they move to a cheaper spot.
