A very welcoming staff in a lovely restaurant. Food was prepared and presented with care. Very delicious and satisfying. Looking forward to a return visit.

Our visit to this little gem in Poughkeepsie, was long overdue! Brasserie 292 is the place to be for delicious, well serve gourmet food. Our gracious and professional waitress Carmen, made our evening relaxed, pleasant and enjoyable, with her service and her smile. She was on top from beginning to end, making sure everything was perfect, and it was. Nice background music. For starter I had the Steak Tartare, I love it, my husband had the fried oyster, it was ok, not his favorite. The NY Strip Au Poivre brought a smile to his face. It was rare as ordered with a delicious sauce au Poivre, mashed potatoes and sauté vegetables. My Braised Lamb was literally falling of the bone it was finger licking good as was the side of risotto. Let's talk about desert, definetly " the top of the cake" Three delicious Profiteroles with gelato and chocolate sauce. The Ricotta Cheesecake was spot on. A great evening to end the week. We will go back!

Food: The salmon was very good, cooked well over a bed of spinach and potatoes. I ordered the clam chowder also, but it a little soupy. I feel like they might have watered it down to make more of it...? I dunno. It was okay, but not amazing. Atmosphere: Nice little steakhouse inside, but call ahead if you have a large party because they will have to rearrange some stuff. Service: Our waiter was cool, no complaints (hey Kevin!) but I felt really bad for him because the daily specials was like a mile long! There must've been 3 appetizers and 3 entrees you could order and he had to remember all of them! And then we didn't order any of them either, doh! So good job remembering all of them, Kevin... sorry we didn't order any. Price: I mean, it's a steak-house-ish restaurant so it's not cheap, but it wasn't too bad. Appetizer and entree will run you about 60$, then add on drinks also. We didn't look at the drink menu at all. So, a little pricy for my taste... Overall: Not a bad place, but didn't floor me either. Still, solid meal for a decent price.

It was okay. The food was a bit underwhelming. I had the oysters which were fine - I do think it's pretty hard to mess up oysters, and the Bronzino for my main, which was all right, but honestly nothing special. It was by no means bad, but just underwhelming and unimpressive. While the food was just okay I have to say that the service was absolutely amazing! Our waitress was absolutely incredible and really elevated our experience. Ambience is all right - It's not anything special but it's decent. I can definitely see this place being great and would for sure give brasserie 292 another shot.

We had such a nice dinner here. Wine selection is good and food is delicious! French sardine is our favorite of the night. The waiter is very friendly. It has the French vibe and love the decor here.

I am such a foodie, and when I first saw the reviews and the menu and photos from other people that have dined here, I knew that I had to come for supper! Our waiter George was amazing and so friendly and helpful! You can tell he has his favorites at the restaurant and he is not afraid to tell you all about them lol The restaurant has a very cozy feel, and is not very large, but you also do not feel crowded! I had two adult beverages and appetizer that was a goat salad a steak meal and dessert and my bill was $120 with tip. I do not regret spending one penny of that money as it was completely worth my entire dining experience!

I can't give this place a 5 because all we had were oysters and drinks. But not going to minimize the drinks. They were fantastic. The oysters were cleaned well and they're served with a homemade hot sauce. It's the cutest label I have ever seen, what attention to detail. Not guna lie I wanted to take it with me, so cute! A gem in the Poughkeepsie area

I stopped into Brasserie 292 in Poughkeepsie last night and sat at the bar for dinner. The vibe is beautiful -- very vintage, almost Gatsby-era jazz style, super aesthetic. The bartender was really friendly and made my drink exactly how I wanted it. Drinks were amazing, and the food was great too -- I had the special and loved it. Definitely a spot I'd come back to.

This restaurant sells non-champagne sparkling wine as a champagne.

What a shame for a French restaurant. The restaurant sells a regular sparking wine branded as Champagne. The server told us that if he was the owner he would not do it. The manager listened to me when I told him that he should not sell sparkling wine as champagne, and remained silent. The fish and the creme brulee were good. The ambience is a typical French bistro.

This place was *excellent* in every dimension: (1) bar / drinks were great; their own version of a Manhattan was balanced, smoky, delicious. Their Vieux Carre is my new favorite, aromatic and yummy. (2) food is top-class; we had Lamb shank that fell off the bone, Gnocci was tender; trout was perfect and beautiful; (3) decor was 100% true to a french bistro (down to the french jazz playlists) (4) desserts... to die for. Beignets were perfect and light. (5) servers (ours was Kat) were totally friendly yet professional and helpful While we don't live in Poughkeepsie, we will *definitely* return!

Just got engaged to my bestie and spent a day upstate celebrating. After hiking we had dinner at this cozy establishment. Just got back from hiking? No worries. Totally chill. The host with the hat? All the vibes. Our server George was attentive and friendly without being too much. He was also knowledgeable on the menu which was impressive! I can't wait to come back and explore more of the menu. WE ORDERED: grilled octopus (amazing), cheese platter (this was a lot of fun bc we played with all of the flavors) and blue point oysters (super fresh) THEN he had the duck confit which was savory and melty and my duck breast was more sweet and savory. Both entrees were good to the last drop. For dessert, milk chocolate pudding with caramel top and whip cream. I was in heaven. Espressos also There were serious dopamine hits going on. This meal was both satiating and romantic. We were both so happy with the experience and the food. Kudos to the staff and kitchen running this place like a pro, you all are killing it!

It has been a few years since being back here, but it did not disappoint. Staff and food were on point. Love the ambiance here and vibe. Waitress, Natalie stopped by the table right away and greeted us. She was extremely attentive as was the rest of the staff. We had oysters, escargot and liver pate for appetizers. The escargot was lacking some flavor compared to others I have had. They served bread which is always nice to have. For dinner we went with pork loin and octopus appetizer as entree. Pork was cooked perfectly with mashed potatoes and spinach. All delicious and bountiful. Octopus was cooked to perfection extremely tender with greens and an olive tapenade under it. Noah also touched our table and was extremely knowledgeable regarding wine, dinner and how the chef prepares items. He recommended a light pinotage which pared perfectly with dinner. One of my favorite spots in Poughkeepsie for a slightly upper scale experience. Love it here ! My only suggestion would be to wipe down the tops of the booths. You can see the build up of dust.

Torn about this restaurant due to the difference in bad service and good food. My entire experience was especially disappointing after one member of our party had spent all year raving about Brasserie 292. The following review will address the food, then the service. To put it shortly, the food was amazing. The bread was served with a soft, delicious infused/compound butter. The Escargots were soft and paired well with the herbed butter in which they were cooked. The baguette slices were toasted well and crispy. Our Braised Lamb Shank was fall-off-the-bone tender. It was also a generous portion. The red wine brought out the gamey flavor of the lamb which, with the gentle flavors of the barley risotto, were not overwhelming. Finally, the Chocolate Pot de Creme was absolutely delicious. I was expecting a mousse-like texture but it was a lot thicker. Its dark chocolate flavor wasn't too sweet and rounded out my entire meal. I would definitely recommend saving room for dessert. Now, the service- the ambiance inside was perfect for our graduation dinner and the staff were extremely accommodating over the phone. But upon arrival, it was clear that the owner and staff were not happy about our large party. Our server did not give us bread until we realized other tables had gotten it. Even then, we were only served a small basket of six slices for our party of twelve. Those of us who did not choose to drink had our wine glasses snatched away rather rudely. My partner and I chose to split a large starter and an entree, as we are on the smaller side. The server seemed miffed about our order choices, despite the rest of our party ordering plenty of food. Our order ended up being almost too much food, so I'm glad we didn't cave in and order another dish. Perhaps I am simply not refined enough to enjoy cold French service, but I would've appreciated nicer treatment on our graduation night and celebration. If I were reporting on just the food, Brasserie 292 would be an automatic five-stars. However, service is equally important to the overall dining experience and I would be embarrassed to bring other friends/family here in the future for fear of disrespectful service.

I ordered an old fashioned that came to the table red, and when I questioned the look the waiter assured me it was an old fashioned. Upon tasting it, it had the correct ingredients, but so little bourbon that the color and balance of the drink was off. Then, for the entrees, we both ordered the filet mignon au poivre. The steak was fine, as were the vegetables, but not worth $44 by any stretch. On top of that, the "frites" were clearly frozen rather than freshly made. The waiter was nice, and we enjoyed the ambiance. But we were blown away by the gap in quality of the food and its cost. When you visit French restaurants you expect a certain tier of cuisine that Brasserie seems to be emulating on the surface but swinging and missing on in reality. Not worth the visit unfortunately. We were seated by the window and were given freshly baked bread. We ordered the French classics: mussels, escargot, duck leg confit, and steak and fries. The mussels came out first and were pretty average. I usually like sipping the wine broth it comes with or dipping fries/bread into the broth. The escargot had plenty of oil and seasoning. It was actually too salty even though my coworker requested less salt on everything. I enjoyed dipping the fresh bread into the oil. Lastly came the entrees. I was a bit disappointed in both of them. The hanger steak was cooked medium rare like I wanted but the texture was not great. I was hoping for a more tender cut and this was a bit tough and lean. The frites were cooked well and very crispy. The duck confit was very tender but I didn't think it was amazing. Overall I don't think I will be returning to this restaurant with so many other great options around. I might be biased as I am not too familiar with French cuisine but we already sampled most of the classics already.

The lighting is dim, the ambiance is intimate, and it looks romantic. I had made reservations so we were seated immediately. It's funny to note that the place settings were placed next to each other instead of across from each other at a four person table. We usually prefer to face each other, but when it's Valentine's day why not be cute? We ordered a few drinks during our dinner, the Sugar Plum Fairy, Memere 75, Avion en papier. My favorite was definitely the Avion en papier which had a slightly sweet, slightly bitter, citrusy taste. They had a pre fixe menu for Valentine's Day which unfortunately did not have the steak tartare i was interested in trying. But for $88, you get 3 courses: an appetizer, entree, and dessert. For our appetizers, we got the TARTARE DE THON (tuna tartare) and COCKTAIL DE CREVETTES GEANTES (shirmp cocktail). Between the two, i preferred the tuna tartare. The shrimp cocktail was good, but the only thing really special about it was the massive size of the shrimp and the freshly grated horseradish in the cocktail sauce. For our entrees, we got the CASSOULET DE CANARD and FILET MIGNON. The extremely tender duck leg confit was served with pancetta, white beans, toulouse sausage, and foie gras breadcrumb. It was rich, savory, fatty, and filling. All great words to describe food. The duck leg confit reminded me a little bit of a smoked turkey leg with the red coloring and shreddable texture. The filet mignon was served with pomme purée, wild mushrooms, and a bordelaise sauce. The filet was cooked medium rare as requested, but a bit under salted. The pomme purée aka mashed potatoes tasted like it was 50% butter so it was obviously delicious. Dessert was good, but my least favorite part of the meal. We got the TAHITIAN VANILLA CRÈME BRÛLÉE and the VALRHONA CHOCOLAT POT AU CRÈME. Both were very sweet. The brûlée crust did not shatter well, but it otherwise had a nice creamy texture. The chocolate pot was covered in flaky feuilletine which gave a nice contrast to the creamy chocolate, but my wife found the brandied cherries overpowering. The cherries made me think of German chocolate cake. Service was excellent. Staff was quick to refill water and checked on us constantly. Pace of the meal was relaxed and I'd even say they were slow to bring us the check since we had been dining for over 2 hours. My wife wants me to bring her back for their bottomless brunch on a Sunday so I will eventually be back.

This brings us to The James, managed by Joe Giannino under the fat-cat "Standard Hospitality Group," owned by Andrew Affa & Steve Squirtiro. It's hard owning a business and keeping it profitable but not when it's an almost algorithmic formula driven money extraction system so commonly found today. It's more difficult dining out in the world today when it feels like hospitality is vacating. Vining more about high-revenue than humanity. By very definition, I wouldn't call a good portion of the hospitality industry hospitality at all, and I certainly wouldn't say the James offers any. What I love about food is what it does for the soul, & what I've always loved about providing and caring for people is the sense of community; connection during good times and difficult ones alike; That's hospitality to me. Breaking bread is one of the most fundamental human gestures of generosity and true wealth. When you have it, you share it not squander it, not hoard it or treat it like it's something to take from others and line your pockets with. That's why this experience disappointed me so much, because I believe with the myriad of options, we must be far more selective and far more supportive of local and smaller family run establishments. Today, for a table they would still fill and never notice, I tried to cancel a reservation out of respect -- respect for the staff, for other guests, and for my damn self. Being charged a cancellation fee when a mom is sick on Mothers Day, is not hospitality, it is not empathy. It is greed disguised as brand experience self worth. I have supported the Arlo from this same restaurant group in the past and probably would have happily returned too, based on the menu alone, but coldhearted, rigid policies like this change how a place feels. There are many family-run restaurants that understand flexibility and empathy. That kind of environment matters to me, and this experience will forever make me decide to support those places instead. I've recently learned to name positive outcomes when something negative arises, so I believe this time, it's great that it only cost me fifty bucks to never give this group another dime. Typical corporate hospitality is more what the James can offer. These types of COMPANIES feed themselves, not the community.
