This is my first time eating Detroit style pizza and H&P didn't disappoint. The place was small, with seatings for 2, a bar top overlooking the maestros, and a communal table in the middle. Noticed a lot of take outs. People also stopped by to take their pizza next door to the bar. This is not your average pizza place. It does take a while to get your pizza. We ordered the wings and were done with that... and the pizza was still waiting to be served. I'm sure those take outs had something to say about that. So I got the ambassador pizza, flaky crunchy crust, gooey cheese, savory tomato sauce and very salty pepperoni what's not to love. Chicago deep dish is hard to come by but here it's nailed just right. First time trying Detroit style pizza. It was delicious, the ingredients that went to the pizza were marvelous to our tastebuds. The place has two seating arrangements in the periphery and one big community table in the middle that could fit maybe 10 or more. There's also bar style sitting overlooking the pizza makers. Overall, the place is small, but just enough. Take out folks come in to the cashier as well. Getting your pizza will take a while though. This is not your neighborhood pizzeria where you get a premade pizza and slap some toppings and 5 minutes later you got your pie. No folks, this is order pizza and wait about 20+ minutes for my pizza to arrive. I'm sure the take out folks may have something to do with it too. Dropped in quick to pick up a pizza to eat at the bar next door (Goodnight Kenny). Ended up with the Hudson Hornet pizza, and it was out of this world! I didn't think I would like this pizza, lots of sauce. However, it's really delicious.. I could eat it on its own! It had the sweetness of honey, but the heat from jalapeños. I am very good at researching restaurants before trips. But every once in a while, I miss a great one. We were chatting with the owner of Quincy's Candy in Wappinger Falls, and she could tell we are great food enthusiasts. She started talking about Hudson & Packard with a certain reverence and joy. A Detroit Style Pizza place in Poughkeepsie, she said. My wife and I could tell she really thought H&P was terrific. We found it on Yelp, saw the great overall score, and changed our dinner plans for that night. She was right -- Hudson & Packard is amazing. Each of our three person family ordered our own pizza. I ordered the Ambassador, with thicker cut pepperoni, Cuo and Char pepperoni, basil, an amazing red sauce and grated parm. And I ordered it the "chef's way", which consists of a pesto sauce drizzle and additional grated cheese. This was the best Detroit Style Pizza I've ever had. Full disclosure I have not had Detroit Style in Detroit, but frankly I can't imagine better Detroit Style. It was perfect in every way. The side carriage and undercarriage both had ideal color and crispy texture. The flavors were in harmonious balance. The sweet acidity from the great sauce balanced the saltiness from the pepperoni and cheese. The basil and pesto provided a fresh hsrb punch. The colors were beautiful. The cheese was good. The pizza was good juicy. The pizza was awesome. We also split a Caesar salad and I tried a piece of my wife's chicken, mushroom and Ranch pizza. The Caesar was great. The chicken on my wife's pizza was so tender. The ranch was super tasty. And her crust was as good as my crust. My son's build your own had a lot going on. LOL. The parts that H&P controlled were terrific though. Everything was so great -- I did some research about H&P. Turns out I'm not alone in thinking H&P is the best at Detroit Style. For three straight years, H&P went to the world Pizza Expo in Las Vegas and finished in the Top 3 each time in the pan pizza category. I was glad to hear that, because nobody outside the Hudson Valley was going to be believe me when I said Poughkeepsie had the best Detroit Style. In terms of the restaurant itself, H&P has an open kitchen, a large communal dining table and a few smaller tables. Can't hide anything in an open kitchen. It was fun to watch them work. We enjoyed a Detroit-style pizza in a small pizza parlor in Poughkeepsie on a scorching summer afternoon. We requested a gluten-free crust topped with jalapeños, pineapple, charred pepperoni, and red onions. We also ordered lemon pepper dry rubbed chicken wings as appetizers. They were unfortunately deepfried to the point of desiccation. The pizza took some time to be cooked in a cast iron pan but the results were delicious. Interestingly the red sauce is poured on top of the other ingredients and the tomato flavor dominated everything else. The gluten-free crust was crispy and held up well. . We came in on a Wednesday around 6pm. There were a couple of customers waiting for to go orders. The restaurant is kinda small with six small tables and one large table-nice decor. Didn't seem like they have air conditioning (?) There were three other groups and we shared the large table with one group. Our server was friendly and efficient. We ordered the chicken parmy and the cutlass supreme. Our pizzas took about thirty minutes (these pizzas are definite worth waiting for) Crispy deliciousness in both pizzas. The first time I had their pizza I ordered take out and enjoyed it at a brewery nearby (Kingscourt...also a neighborhood must), but this time we dined in. The pizza was just as good as takeout. The space is relatively small and seating fills up quickly. The service was a bit slow, but definitely still worth a visit. The crunch of the pizza crust is like no other. We added some buffalo sauce to the thunderbird (chicken, bacon, red onions and ranch) and that was the personal touch it needed. If you like Detroit style pizza then this is the best Detroit style you will find for a few thousand miles. If you never had Detroit style then think of a Sicilian type of pizza with a crispier buttery crust. The hipsters and city folks already know about this place so it's usually crowded since it's small and when you deal with that many hipsters/city people service tends to lack and the ambience is judgmental. Even though this is Detroit style Pizza it is the best pizza around so it's worth the aggravation. Their Caesar salad is so delicious, their BBQ wings were fried to perfection and the sauce is addictive. The pizza is so good and being from NYC that's says a lot. Cool pizza shop with friendly staff! the lemon pepper wings were pretty good, I prefer it over their Buffalo wings (ours came a bit over burnt/fried), the lemon flavor was a bit sour and wings were salty but went well with their ranch sauce that had a hint of pesto flavor which I thought was better than dipping in blue cheese. For pizza, try the Ford funghi with mushroom with truffle flavor that was good. The Ambassador was better than cutlass supreme, quite similar so I'd suggest picking one out of the two. Firebird was their buffalo pizza with chicken pieces that were a bit dry, I had it with blue cheese but ranch might be a better idea, it was skippable for me. PYT was also similar to the mushroom one so I recommend picking one out of the two there. You can request them to cut the pizza by 6 pieces for sharing, it doesn't look that big but was really filling. Loved their yummy crust. The beet salad was also good and refreshing. Cool decor and chill vibe, cute shop if you're looking for somewhere to go after visiting the walkway over the Hudson state historic park. read more

Looking through Yelp reviews, I was impressed to see a lot of great feedback which puts me on the line as well - I have to give it a try. Let me say, it was worth it. There's something I learned about these particular pizzas, and their Detriot style, which I'd never guess even if I had no knowledge and just saw the name "Hudson & Packard." Through reviews and the website, it gives more information about the business and pizza. There is parking located across the street in a public lot and also for convenience, parking is available on the side. Just be careful when pulling out. Coming in leads to one room along with tables of two, one big table sitting a lot (for that, I'd recommend making a reservation for a big party ahead of time), and high stools looking into the kitchen. Assuming the size of the place, it's more of a takeout business it seems an addition to delivery. I ordered The Ambassador slice which comes with double pepperoni, tomato sauce, parmesan, and fresh basil. Putting that thing in my mouth got me thinking, man why did I wait this long to try it?! Crispy and despite it being burnt a bit, the taste was unbelievable. A lot of preparation sure paid off to make it a success. I'm definitely going to try their other slices and salad. Service was outstanding from start to finish as our waitress took great care, answered questions, and checked frequently. Beware, please have patience when it gets busy, as it may take a while for the food to arrive, as it did for us on our visit. Don't recall ever having Detroit style pizza but if it's anything like here then I'm a fan. Place is small but very cool interior, loved the ceiling light fixtures over center table. Started off with a Caesar's salad, one size fits all, and enjoyed that. We then ordered half cheese/pepperoni and there's two choices of pepperoni, a thick slice and a cup & char choice, we went with the latter. Pizza was outstanding, we both loved the sauce and crust was fantastic, pizza was a little bigger than a personal pan cut into 4 squares. Hudson & Packard is awesome!! We've been wanting to check this place out for a long time and made a point to check it out while we were in Poughkeepsie. It most definitely did not disappoint!! The atmosphere is great, a compact space with cool décor and a lot of energy. This place has a buzz about it. We sat at the counter and got to watch the team making all of the food. It was extremely impressive to see the frequency they are able to churn out food while still providing a great amount of skill & care to each order. Despite being very busy, the owner Charlie stopped to chat with us a few times as did other members of the staff. They are such a friendly group and they really put the whole experience over the top for us. The food was everything we had hoped it would be and more. This is not your average pizza place. Hudson & Packard is exactly what you'd expect as the result of a Culinary Institute graduate opening a pizza shop. Elevated food that offers everything you love about pizza with the skill, craft & creativity of a trained chef. The crust is very light and flavorful with any number of delicious toppings to choose from. Everything we had was phenomenal, including the pistachio cake for dessert. Until about two years ago, I had no idea what Detroit style pizza was, but I learned about it from a chat in Yelp Albany. I wasn't sure initially if I'd like it, but I knew I had to try it. That opportunity popped up - literally, because this place started as a pop-up restaurant before moving to a permanent site - with Hudson & Packard. The only remaining questions were when to get it and what to order. Now is good. I started with their Ambassador. I figured they had to get this right, otherwise I wouldn't want to order anything else. They got it more than right and now I feel obliged to try everything else (don't you hate when that happens?). The texture and taste combinations between the crust, center, and toppings are a great mix. The crust is amazing. The pepperoni was perfect, and the sauce/tomatoes were slightly tart, which is fine because I don't like an overly sweet sauce. I was originally thinking, "Okay maybe this isn't my absolute favorite pizza in the area, because there are 2 other pizzerias locally I like who serve a different style of pizza (and both are 5-star in my book too)." Then I realized I had devoured my first slice of this pizza in about 60 seconds, so I think my taste buds get to contribute towards this review. But for me it's also more than just the pizza. There's also the salads (including the beet salad) and the beverages. I'll never turn down a Mexican Coke if it's on the menu, and the Vernor's Ginger Soda adds that extra touch of Michigan-ness. Even better, they offer beers from local Poughkeepsie breweries just a few blocks away! There will undoubtedly be people not inclined to spend the $14-$18 for 4 slices of pizza. Look at it this way - there ARE people willing to spend that, and many of them are leaving 5-star reviews. Update: 5 days later, I ordered more pizza, this time their Thunderbird and the Cutlass Supreme. Personally, I find I like their tomato sauce based pizzas better, mostly because I like the rich, tart flavor of the sauces. But I would certainly never turn down a slice of any of their pizzas. Are you going to believe me when I say that the best pizza in the Hudson Valley is the Detroit-style pie of Hudson & Packard? You better! Look, I was expecting it to be good... I wasn't expecting it to be *this* good. I will first speak the virtues of the vegan pie because that is the one that I ate. You pick four toppings and it's a little extra for Violife cheese, which I recommend that you do, too, in order to get the full, decadent experience. I also had mushrooms, olive tapenade, spinach and artichokes. The crust is thick, yes, but not thick like Chicago-style as this is more like an airy focaccia and not doughy at all. The sauce is fucking incredible. Perfection: tangy, salty and nice and thick. The amount of toppings and cheese are not too little nor too much but just right. My god, it was so good that I forced myself to stop at 3/4 of the pie and take the rest home. It was just as good two nights later. My husband had one of the meaty pies (the Cutlass Supreme) and he, too, deemed it above and beyond any pizza we've had in this area. He said he'd be willing to drive the 20 minutes to and from Poughkeepsie to get our weekly fix (and he hates driving). Yes, there is a bit of a wait, but chill out and you will be rewarded with the best pizza in the Hudson Valley, OK? We dined in and watched both the kitchen staff and FOH staff work their butts off!
