Warning: We went here recently and had an experience that was a little sketchy. I was with a group of about 12 people with about 4 separate checks. When our bill arrived, mine was the only check that had an itemized bill. I noticed that the gratuity was added on to the bill. In addition, my credit card receipt had an option to add the tip, which was already added. I advised my friends that were dining with me and as it turned out, none of them had the itemized bill that showed they had already tipped. They had written in an extra tip on their card. I'm not even sure that this practice is legal but differently a sketchy business practice. read more

Used to go here when J.B. & Maria owned it and it was great. The next owners, not so much. The owners now have done a great job with it and are coming along just fine. The escargo wasn't up to par but I wasn't charged and hopefully will be right next time because I will try that again and give another review.. Stay away from this place, service was great on this dinner for my sisters birthday, but took way over an hour to get our entrees, they were tough, dry and inedible.. My filet was a hard as a hockey puck.. My aunt sawed on her pork chop until we helped her cut it into little pieces.. We ended up asking for gravy to pour on them to make them more moist.. Terrible food. Find another basque place to eat at.. Sure miss the original owners, they would never have allowed this place to get so bad. Everything has WAAAAY too much salt! Salad was mixed lettuce with red wine vinegar...couldn't taste any oil. Green beans came from a can. Pink beans came from a can. A $100 ticket for two seems unreasonable for canned side dishes! Server wasn't rude but wasn't helpful or informative. Apparently they serve sandwiches of different kinds but you won't find them on the menu. I also had to sweep a bug off our table that did it for me...we can't recommend this spot. read more

All though the food wasn't all that good and the service had gotten bad, we use to come here every year for my father in law's birthday. It has been about 4 years, and we noticed they had new owners, so we decided to give it a try. Made a reservation, since there was 9 of us. We got there and I noticed they had did some painting on the outside and made some changes in the inside. They sat us down right away and the service started out pretty good. The food seemed to be the same, and tasted the same. Just ok. The service slowed down in the middle. So looking around they weren't all that busy, but noticed the girls helping out standing around doing a lot of talking, instead of being out what needed to be brought out. Finally our main course came out, and out of the 4 steaks mine was the smallest and really thin. It did taste good. We ordered dessert, and was very disappointed. There was 4 peanut butter pies and one chocolate mousse. My daughter didn't like the mousse, said it was more like a brownie. I had the peanut butter pie and was disappointed. You could not taste the peanut butter. Over all the food has stayed the same and the service has improved. But skip dessert. read more

I've been going to this place for over 40 years. The restaurant has been aging but is now under new ownership. It is much improved. The Set Up is to die for. So much good food. Bread, soup beans, salsa, salad, fresh tomatoes, hot green beans and French frys. Add Pickled Tongue on the side. So, so good. All food is served with the full multi-course Basque "setup" which includes beans, salad, soup, and more. Everything was a generous portion, hearty, and tasty. Tried going to Woolgrowers but I guess you have to a Reservation nowadays . They don't allow us peasants to walk in anymore like they used to years ago. My how things have changed. So I ended up going to Chalet Basque and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Chalet is just as good if not better than Woolgrowlers. The atmosphere was inviting the staff very friendly. Made us feel at home like WoolGrowlers used to. I don't get treated like a peasant and the best thing is you don't have to pay extra for pickled tongue, it comes with the meal. This place is the best and urge folks to try it out. I would recommend the Halibut. They get five stars, great food, reasonable prices and great service. The prices are a little steep. The lamb chops were $34.95 with the full setup (cabbage soup, salad, beans, and bread). While the chops were delicious, you only get 3 chops. A house wine was $11 which I believe was Salmon Creek which you can buy a whole bottle at the store for just $5.50. Service was fine, but nothing great. My husband wanted a small draft beer and ended up with a large. There are other Basque restaurants in Bakersfield and we have gone to two of them. I would highly recommend going to the others and skipping this one. read more

We love this place and try and visit every time we go through Bakersfield. They have one of the nicest atmospheres of all the Basque restaurants we've tried. Their beef brochettes are delicious and we love the soup, beans and the rest of the set-up dishes. This was my first real Basque meal, and it was just okay. Started out with the sides, including soup, beans, salsa and bread. That was the best part of the meal. The soup was tasty with the beans and the salsa. Loved the heat of the salsa. Next came the salad. Whoa! Way too much dressing. And then the pickled cow's tongue was marinated in the same dressing. I had to eat a piece of bread to get the taste of the dressing out of my mouth. I had the bacon-wrapped Filet with shrimp. Not the best steak I've had. It was a little tough, and not much flavor at all. The shrimp were nothing special, either. I could only eat half the steak. Don't think I'll be back. Everyone says to try the other place in town. So today I was craving basque food and our go to basque place (Woolgrowers) was already closed for the afternoon. So my wife and I decided on Chalet Basque. Walking from the parking lot to the front door my wife spotted a dead cockroach on the sidewalk. I think that was an omen of things to come. We walk in and immediately we are hit with an odor that is similar to an antique store. Good for antiquing not for eating. But we are starving and it's an old building, so what the heck let's give it a go. We notice that there are only a couple other people dining at mid afternoon. Our server was prompt in seating us but he didn't greet us or inform us of the specials. He just took our order and left. And the waiting begins. It's Bakersfield in September so it's hot outside and we are dying of thirst. Now I think I know how that cockroach died. After what seemed like an eternity, our waiter brings our water and the first course of soup, beans, salsa and bread. All were good but Woolgrowers is much better and you don't have to wait as long. The salad was overdressed and barely edible. The pickled tongue however was surprisingly good. By this time we have run out of water and on the verge of dehydration. We were praying that Our waiter would come but to no avail. After some more waiting and slurping the last drops of water out of our glasses and making enough noise to wake that dead cockroach on the sidewalk outside, our waiter appears with our entrees. Hallelujah. My wife ordered the chicken with bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms which she really enjoyed. I had the prime rib, which was more like roast beef. It was over cooked, tough and served with enough garlic to keep every vampire away from here to Frisco. The waiter noticed that I didn't have a steak knife and that we were out of water. He said he would bring both right away. Evidently his definition of right away and my definition are different. Ten minutes later still no water and no steak knife. When we finally got our refills of water we were almost through with our meal. I had to use my wife's knife because the restaurant only has one steak knife that I assume everyone has to share. When our server reappeared he asked us if we need boxes to take home. Not wanting to wait for another hour we just asked for our check which he brought immediately. We paid for our meal and left a small tip which I never do but the service was horrible. We will not make the mistake of coming here again. If you want great basque food with great service, do yourself a favor and avoid this place like the plague and go to Woolgrowers. read more

We don't get access to Basque food often,so the family recipes served here were devoured happily. The one star deduction is the decor - the place needs a major upgrade. They have a full bar and the environment is something the tv show Cheers...everyone is friendly and after you've been there a few times, everyone knows your name.
