Its been a while since we have had the food. We didn't have reservations but they seated us for dinner. Its a nice place clean and looks nice. We looked over the menus and prices are pretty high. We decided to get just the set up. Its pretty simple and for two to eat without a beverage its about 44 dollars. You get a simple cabbage soup, French bread and butter, pot beans, salsa, lettuce in dressing tomatoes with slivered onion and green beans that looked canned. The French fries didn't appear to be too fresh kind of limp to be honest. Most basque set ups Ive had prior came with pickled tongue and cheese. If you want those items its extra charge. Just not that impressive this round. It was disappointing but we will give it one more try and see if there is improvement. I would love to try the fried chicken or other things but the prices could be a little more customer friendly, and I do understand the economy but come on. Well let's see next time how things go.

I came to try the taco Tuesday menu.I never in my life imagined going to taco Tuesday at a basque restaurant, but I'm glad I did . The menu has amazing specials. You can try a few items , leave full and happy without breaking the bank . You can tell Chalet Basque is a local favorite, the people inside sat chatting with each other at different tables creating a cozy inviting atmosphere. The staff inside were kind , courteous and fast . Wait time here is minimal. The decor is vintage, showing the history of the restaurant, city and basque culture . Curiosity brought me here , I tried steak tacos , chips and salsa , and the smash burger. The food came out promptly and was freshly made . Everything was delicious, it tasted as if it was made to order . I enjoyed everything. My favorite was the shredded beef tacos , and the smash burger . The meat was so flavorful and juicy. I enjoyed my time here tremendously. I recommend.

During a road trip up to NorCal with some friends, we stopped in Bakersfield for gas and I suggested we get basque food for dinner. There are many options in Bakersfield and we opted for Chalet Basque since it was open later. Chalet Basque has a fairly large dedicated parking lot, but given that it was busy Valentine's Day we got one of the last two spots. We also got lucky getting a table without a reservation. Service was absolutely phenomenal with extremely friendly servers and was the highlight of the meal for sure. The restaurant was very rustic and lots of hearts were added for Valentine's Day. The dining areas are split into multiple rooms. As for the food, the oxtail dish was a bit cold and I have had better. They also failed to notify us that they had run out of stuffed mushrooms until the very end of the meal when we inquired why they had not arrived yet. The "setup" with all of the sides were plentiful, fresh, and very tasty though. Prices were also fair for the quantity of the food given.

So good we had a take a Pickled tongue to go too!

Love eating here family style. Food is always fresh and my steak is always made perfect. My ice tea is always refilled and service is great. Bathrooms are clean and this is where I like brining my family to have a nice lunch or dinner . Ooooo and don't forget to try the salsa

It's been a bit since we've had a chance to stop into a classic, local favorite Chalet Basque Bakersfield on Oak St. It's under new ownership and they've really brought it back! Dinner tonight was amazing I had the Roast Beef (which was fork tender) and my husband had the Beef Bourginon which was delicious and flavorful. Our favorite staff member, George, was still there giving fantastic customer service as usual. If you haven't had a chance to go in lately, check it out!

I was very pleasantly surprised by our recent visit to Chalet Basque. I hadn't been in several years after it seemed to go down hill for a long while. I'd heard there is new ownership, so decided to come in and give them another go. The service was quick and pleasant, and most of the food lived up to what we expect from Basque food in Kern County. I really enjoyed the beef bourguignon, my mother in law loved her fried chicken with garlic, and my husband said his pork chop was "okay." (I thought it tasted oddly fishy.) Everything else was very good.

Didn't get greeted when we entered Didn't get seated until asked. Slow and bad service. Proteins over cooked. Ignored the entire time. And they took forever for the bill. Do not waste time and money. Very disappointed. Also the food looks like it has artificial dyes in it.

Garlic Parmigiana Wings, home made ranch dressing, and fries

Compliments to the chef, these are not your average garlic parmesan wings! These were made with LOVE! We are talking about fresh garlic and parsley, minced and sautéed with butter and parmesan cheese. House ranch is on point and perfectly crispy fries. Hands down beats many competitors with quality and price! Happy hour deals are an extra BONUS!

I have just visited the cocktail lounge recently and I must say Jeffrey provides great service and delicious drinks. Manny who has been here for years is always so friendly. Now I have been informed that ownership has changed. The focus is on higher quality of meat & produce in the kitchen. Also staff has been expanded to provide the best in cuisine and service. I'm looking forward to dining here soon.

Under new ownership. Newly remodeled inside and out. Manny and George still there. More staff has been hired to accommodate customers. The whole staff is happy now and it shows. Same menu.

Wool Growers Restaurant is Olive Garden on steroids!…read more I love coming here and getting "the set-up" that is equivalent to Olive Garden's soup/salad/breadsticks. My main dish has to be the pickled tongue sandwich. It's Basque food at its finest. Not everyone is a fan of pickled tongue, but for me it tastes just like roast beef if it were pickled. So delicious! I tried the oxtail stew for the first time and it tasted warm and comforting. Like those ones you'd have as a kid from out of a Campbell's can, except way better! Their whole staff is very friendly and attentive, which is saying something, especially if you're seated in their Banquet Room. There's a ton of people in there! I love that the main entrance feels very "hole in the wall." It's tucked away in Old Town Kern and is one of those places you just need to experience. It has such a cozy, homey vibe, which makes it great for all sorts of family celebrations. I love walking down the hallway with all the frames hanging on the walls. Wool Growers is a classic. By the time I left, I feel like this is one of the places that gets really popular for weekend dinners in the area. The building itself from the outside, and when you walk in feels slightly dated, but that adds to the charm of it all. I came in earlier on a Friday evening so I was able to get seated right away. But I can tell this place was getting busier and busier. It also helps that I think this space is huge. From the outside it doesn't look like it, but it goes all the way back. The menu prices looked a little pricey at first, but I didn't realize the entire feast that was coming my way when I ordered. I got the oxtail stew with carrots. As soon as I ordered, some of the dishes started coming out. When you order Andrea here it comes with soup, bread, some beans and salsa, a salad, some veggies, some pasta, and fries. An absolute feast. And everything was really good with fresh ingredients. The oxtail do is very comforting and right up my alley. I couldn't even finish half of what I got so I ended up taking a lot of food to go. Definitely inclined to take more people with me the next time lol. This place seems like it would be good for celebrations or group dinners. It reminds me of a progression similar to an old style restaurant that I went to with my girlfriend in college. An old school Italian restaurant in the North Beach area of San Francisco. I typically don't see that style of service had a lot of the new restaurants. If I'm in the area, I definitely would love to come back to this restaurant. Try some other items on the menu.

It was nice to try Benjis and change things up after not having been there for a while. One of the biggest differences at Benji's is that their set up does not include spaghetti, so it needs to be ordered separately. That's one of my favorite parts of the set up so it's a must for me! Otherwise, the menu is pretty much the same. They seem to have a few more entree options to add on that at Woolgrower's but most of our party tends to stick to the set up or add on a few scampis. Overall, solid spot. If you're in Bakersfield, eating at a Basque restaurant is just such a must. It's such a unique experience and so delicious!

The restaurant seemed pretty full but service was quick and friendly. I don't know why, but I wanted to try the duck. I have never in my life had duck and I am a very picky person when it comes to meat. There were two options for the duck: orange sauce or a yellow peppercorn. I asked the waitress for her input for a first timer and she said bith are good and both are ordered often. I went with her favorite which was the orange. I have to say, I was very pleased with it! The sauce had a nice, sweet, citrus flavor and it wasn't too overpowering. I had always heard that duck was an oily meat but I didn't feel like it was too oily or greasy at all. The flavor was like the dark meat on a Thanksgiving turkey. I was too excited to try it and forgot to take a photo of the whole meal, so that's why my picture of my food is half gone already. When I go back to Benji's, I will definitely try the peppercorned duck. It was definitely worth it.
