I am sad to give a low review for Benji's. They used to be top notch We went there for my husband's birthday. Great service. The food was oddly bland. Except for the fries. Those were still amazing!

Went there with my mom for Mother's Day and I know this review is late but the service and food were wonderful! And I had to review because I still keep thinking about my mom's shrimp spaghetti dish! I am coming back just for it!

Set up is as always good. We love the soup the salad the beans salsa tomato and green beans. But the main entry doesn't have steady quality.

This is still one of my favorite basque places in town. I love their filet of sole because of how light and creamy their sauce is. The fish is always cooked to perfection and i love how there are some crispy edges. The service is always quick. The setup always gets served right away with drinks and is always so filling and delicious. This restaurant has plenty of seating and has a great ambiance for a dinner date or a group celebration.

It's Father Day today, A very busy restaurant day. The hospitality here is always great. Benji dropped by the table to say hello. This is such a great touch of recognition in a busy restaurant . Rebecca was our server today. We were able to order quickly. She and her partner were so pleasant, prompt and polite. The service is consistently good here. We always come in a large group and are well taken care of. As always the setup of beans, soup & bread were brought out immediately, then the green salad and marinated tomatoes. The green beans and French fries accompanied our entrees. But a heads up the pickled tongue is no longer included in the set up. Our meals were delicious. Benji's is French Basque and great place to dine if you have a small or large group. We have never been disappointed. It is my favorite Basque restaurant in Bakersfield.

Stopped by to have a drink in the lounge area. Holly was GREAT! I didn't really know what I was in the mood for. She suggested an espresso martini. I loved it! So yummy and presentation was perfect! Holly was bubbly, sweet and friendly! Bar was neat and very clean. Glad I stopped by.

We are done with Benji's. It's been in the Bakersfield Basque food restaurant rotation for our family forever. But they crazy. My brother is severely allergic to dairy, He can't have most items on most menus, and of course can't have garlic butter, because he can't have butter. As most know, the steaks at Benji's come with garlic butter...but tonight, as he has done in the past, he simply asked them for fresh chopped garlic with his steak (no butter). He also told our server that it wasn't a preference, but was an allergy as he is allergic to dairy products, and that included butter. In response to his fresh garlic substitution request, she pushed back, as she has in past visits (my brother said he had been served by her before and it's a pattern), told him no, actually TOLD HIM NO THEY COULDN'T CHOP UP SOME GARLIC FOR HIM, so he kindly clarified that they couldn't just chop him some garlic?, and she said "fine, that will be like $5 bucks then." Huh?? It was very obvious she randomly made up a price off the top of her head. My brother agreed because at this point he just wants some garlic for his steak like he likes, and like everyone else has the opportunity to have. And as she said she would, she sure did charge us $5 for three cloves of garlic for a steak that comes with garlic anyway. A $400 meal and she got annoyed (but, at what!?!?) so arbitrarily charged us $5 for the cook to chop this garlic. So so terrible. So bye Benji....and Ericka. Woolgrowers and Pyrenees have better food and clearly much better service anyway.

Very different food, not the normal French food. They have large banquets room and table that can be accompanied large party.

    New sign. Looks good.

Wool Growers Restaurant is Olive Garden on steroids!…read more I love coming here and getting "the set-up" that is equivalent to Olive Garden's soup/salad/breadsticks. My main dish has to be the pickled tongue sandwich. It's Basque food at its finest. Not everyone is a fan of pickled tongue, but for me it tastes just like roast beef if it were pickled. So delicious! I tried the oxtail stew for the first time and it tasted warm and comforting. Like those ones you'd have as a kid from out of a Campbell's can, except way better! Their whole staff is very friendly and attentive, which is saying something, especially if you're seated in their Banquet Room. There's a ton of people in there! I love that the main entrance feels very "hole in the wall." It's tucked away in Old Town Kern and is one of those places you just need to experience. It has such a cozy, homey vibe, which makes it great for all sorts of family celebrations. I love walking down the hallway with all the frames hanging on the walls. Wool Growers is a classic. By the time I left, I feel like this is one of the places that gets really popular for weekend dinners in the area. The building itself from the outside, and when you walk in feels slightly dated, but that adds to the charm of it all. I came in earlier on a Friday evening so I was able to get seated right away. But I can tell this place was getting busier and busier. It also helps that I think this space is huge. From the outside it doesn't look like it, but it goes all the way back. The menu prices looked a little pricey at first, but I didn't realize the entire feast that was coming my way when I ordered. I got the oxtail stew with carrots. As soon as I ordered, some of the dishes started coming out. When you order Andrea here it comes with soup, bread, some beans and salsa, a salad, some veggies, some pasta, and fries. An absolute feast. And everything was really good with fresh ingredients. The oxtail do is very comforting and right up my alley. I couldn't even finish half of what I got so I ended up taking a lot of food to go. Definitely inclined to take more people with me the next time lol. This place seems like it would be good for celebrations or group dinners. It reminds me of a progression similar to an old style restaurant that I went to with my girlfriend in college. An old school Italian restaurant in the North Beach area of San Francisco. I typically don't see that style of service had a lot of the new restaurants. If I'm in the area, I definitely would love to come back to this restaurant. Try some other items on the menu.

We walked into the bar and it took me a while for my eyes to adjust from it being so bright outside and dark inside, but you walk right into the middle of the bar with a large bar top and booths around the room. We walked to the restaurant side, which was super cute, but we went to the patio. The patio was super cute as well, with plants all over and there were giant fans for when it gets really hot outside. Our server was awesome too, and I mean awesome because when she came to take our orders I had seen a very tiny very pregnant little black and white cat and I asked about her. Our server was AMAZING in telling me that the local cats are pretty taken care of because she could tell I was concerned and distracted LOL We put in our orders: sister's favorite is the NY Steak French Fry Salad, husband got the Bacon Avocado Pepperjack burger, and I couldn't decide so I got the Basque lunch setup. All the food was awesome. My different dishes were delivered as they were ready and there was so much! The basque lunch is a good value as well in my opinion:) Everyone was very happy with their food and drinks. The restroom was small but worked just fine and pretty clean. Their lasagna is to die for, the bolognese will make you cry tears of joy. The chicken Parmesan was tender and the marinara tasted so fresh. There is plenty of parking in the front and in the back. Decor isn't so great. Service was not so great. At the end once meals were payed couldn't get a server our way to get to go boxes, so I got up and got them myself. Food was mid‍. I was expecting to be wowed and it just didn't happen. The deep fried ravioli with the dipping sauce is delicious, not going to lie. My steak was a tough. The pasta was very al dente, something neither my daughter nor I are used to and now that we have tried al dente I can say I we are not fans. Shrimp scampi was a tad salty and oily, but the shrimps were cooked to perfection. Nothing special about the desserts. I am a huge fan of carrot cake and tiramisu and both were very underwhelming, especially the lemon tiramisu. The raspberry tea was good. The coconut shrimp were good. The egg thingy with peas was surprisingly delicious the flavor was there and it was cooked to perfection. The white pasta sauce was very bland. I have to admit the seasoning on both the chops and the steak was beautiful but it just carried too much char flavor and as I said meat was tough. Would I go back? Yes, I would give place another chance. Too bad my baby has gone back to Virginia for her next deployment.

Jeremy led an exceptional class focused on Portuguese wines, taking us on a journey through the country's diverse wine regions. Rather than simply tasting wines, he dove into the history, terroir, and winemaking techniques behind each pour. I especially enjoyed learning how wines are aged and preserved using stainless steel, oak, and even cement barrels. The discussion about cement barrels was completely new to me and ended up being one of the most fascinating parts of the evening. The class was held in Campo's side room, which was spacious and filled with beautiful natural light. It created a relaxed, intimate ambiance that was perfect for learning, asking questions, and enjoying the wines without feeling crowded. To accompany the tasting, we were served delicious canned tuna seasoned with paprika alongside locally made kettle chips from Moo Creamery, located just down the street. The pairing was simple but thoughtful, allowing the Portuguese wines to remain the star while showcasing another great local business. Jeremy has a gift for making wine approachable and engaging, whether you're a novice or a seasoned wine enthusiast. I left with a much deeper appreciation for Portuguese wines, plenty of new knowledge, and excitement to attend another class. If this first tasting is any indication, I'll definitely be back for many more.
