We have been sending our daughter to the preschool program at Challenger School - Almaden for over six months now, and we couldn't be happier with our experience! The campus is bright, spotless, and features a huge, fantastic playground. The surrounding neighborhood is also beautiful and very pleasant. The staff here is amazing. Best educational decision we've made. After transferring our daughters from a top Almaden public school to Challenger Almaden, the difference has been staggering. The curriculum in math, grammar, vocabulary, and history is much more rigorous, and they are learning at a far higher level. We absolutely love Challenger School! It truly feels like a big family. The teachers are incredibly kind, patient, and passionate, and the parents in my son's class are also very friendly we all know each other and support one another, which creates a warm and welcoming community. One thing that really stands out is how well the teachers know every child. They pay close attention to each student's personality, learning style, and progress, and they communicate with parents regularly about how their child is doing. Honestly, sometimes I feel like the teachers know my son even better than we do! Their feedback is always thoughtful and helpful, and it gives us so much peace of mind. The teacher-to-student ratio is excellent. There are usually at least three teachers in the classroom, and sometimes even four, which means the kids receive plenty of attention and guidance. Most of the time, the director, Ms. Geeta, is also in the classroom teaching and helping take care of the children, which shows how dedicated the leadership team is. As parents with very time consuming jobs, we are incredibly grateful that we can fully trust the school with our son's education and daily care. We never have to worry about his learning because he is constantly growing and improving. At just three years old, he can write all the letters and numbers, pronounce many words, and even read simple words. Before joining Challenger, he mainly spoke Chinese at home. Now his English has improved tremendously, and his confidence has grown so much. Most importantly, he truly enjoys learning. This school has a system of abuse of power. No one can touch Ms. Harper. My family had similar experience with this school ten years ago. Like a few parents, I was initially a bit skeptical of the mixed feedback I got from some of my friends that made challenger sound like a school that was harsh on kids for studies which stresses some of the kids. But , I must say that our experience with Challenger has been extremely positive and we are so happy that we decided to send our son to 4yr old program last year. We chose the Almaden Campus , even though its a bit of a drive for us (we are closer to shawnee ) we have seen the growth in our son ! Not a single day he said he doesn't not want to go to school, in fact initially he even wanted to go on weekends! Ms Geeta is awesome, super nice and our go to person if we have any questions, she even helps us understand kid's behavior and gives us tips on how to manage them at home , we hear good things about his other teachers as well. Even if there is some bullying that may have happened (our son never mentioned anything like that so far) , I believe given a positive environment, kids learn to utilize their social skills and deal with real life situations smartly . An overdue review should've been written two years ago, that's when I enrolled my oldest son in the pre-school program. When I met with Mrs. Geeta for the first time, (who made me feel so welcomed) to get more information about the school, she gave me an overview of how the school was structured, how dedicated they were to the children and their education. What I didn't realize, exactly how unique Challengers teaching methods are. Within only 6 months my son was reading. And not reading by memorization, he was taught concepts and rules of reading. One of my concerns about enrolling him at Challenger was that it was going to be strict and rigorous. What I came to see, is that they're not strict, but purposeful with everything that is done. They still have fun, but every song, every art work, every lesson has a bigger purpose, and compounds on the pervious lessons. Isn't that what we want an education to be? This is why, when I compared him to my nephew' school, my son was two years ahead. Part of why this is done so well is also attributed to the dedicated teachers. From the first teachers my son has had all the way to now; they have been so warm and loving. I loved checking in with the teachers when I'd pick him up. They always made time to clue me in on his progress or anything I needed to work with him on. Having that kind of relationship made him excel even more. Now that my youngest son is enrolled, a decision I made without a second thought, I see the same progress. The teachers seem really invested in my children, like they're their own. They notice their strengths and quirkiness. When the shutdown happened due to COVID, I was amazed how quickly they adapted. While the rest of the county remained shut, Challenger continued to find ways to get back, took very strong measure to keep everyone safe. My favorite part of the changes that have occurred due to COIVD is that we have to stay in the car when we do a drop off. The drop off and pick up feel like a welcome committee waiting for us to arrive and depart, I love it! He is learning so much, sings soooo many songs, brings home fun and impressive artwork. He often talks about his friends, the imaginative games they play, and how much fun he has on a daily basis. They have a lot of playtime, imaginative play, and art in additional learning the alphabet, numbers, reading, and math. They keep the kids busy and entertained with fast paced activities, so they don't get bored and they learn so much with a new, exciting theme weekly. We have been impressed with the quality and care of the preschool program. My son has been at the Challenger Almaden campus until the 6th grade. We transferred him out before finishing the middle school mainly because we couldn't put up with the headmaster of this school (Ms. Harper) anymore, who gave numerous unfair treatments to students. Do you know that Ms. Harper's own daughters study at the Almaden campus too, and she uses her authority to reward them in special ways? For example, both of her daughters won the writing contests every year (often time the gold medals), regardless of the quality of their actual writings. Another example is in one year when Ms. Harper's older daughter failed the election of student council, she put the whole 8th grade's student council on hold. It is unbelievable that she revenged this way. Many parents are aware of the "special treatments" Ms. Harper gave her daughters, but are afraid to say anything due to her absolute power at this school. Besides the issues with Ms. Harper, challenger students are missing out on critical learning opportunities as part of their growth. For example, the PE classes are often running a mile. The school never takes the students to a field trip (except only one in the 8th grade) or celebrates any cultural events, nor do they teach the value of DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) or community contribution. Challenger is more like an agency with a singular focus on academic. Just don't expect anything in terms of building characters or social skills from this school. read more

My daughter has been going to this school for 10 months now. She started with two half day pre school program. I then moved her to the three all day program. In 10 month she has learned so much. She is now able to read 3 letter word. She is only 3.5 years old. My little girl loves school and is having fun at the same time. I really like the preschool principle her name is Miss Gita. I agree with some of the reviews here and out there online that school director (Geeta Matani) is a root cause of a lot of problems. I had my then-3 years old son attend the Challenger pre-school and he loved it simply because the teachers are loving and great. The school director made a big push to us, the parents for every little unexpected thing our toddler did in pre-school. I firstly appreciated all of her advises and tried to learn better parenting since he is our first. At 1 point of time, we were submitting student withdrawal notice for our son because we had to go out of the country for more than 1 month, she started her drama by saying "Once you come back to US, I would suggest you to enroll your son into a play-based school because he doesn't seem to fit to our system." I was so surprised when I heard this, even I asked the teachers in the classroom and all of them confirmed the same thing that "there is nothing out of normal with your son's behavior as he is just a learning pre-schooler." I called out a meeting with Principal and the school director, in there you won't believe what the school director said. In this meeting, she started listing down every point of problems about our son in the classroom. We knew some points as she/teachers had previouslynotified us and we had been working on it, however the rest of the points were never even discussed with us. We even had to call 1 of the teachers to the meeting to speak out her statement on this. Bottom of the line: It's great school, teachers, and system. It's just 1 individual in the school that drags my satisfaction rating from 5 to 1 star. My son still loves the teachers: Ms. Jennifer, Ms. Julie, Ms. Anjali, and Ms. Ferry. My kid just started first grade at Challenger Almaden, after two years of great learning experience from the preschool and kindergarten programs. She really likes this school and we are happy to observe the progress she made academically and socially. We are pleasantly surprised to read the composition she wrote independently at school, to appreciate the beautiful paintings she made and to listen to all the lovely songs she has learned throughout the school year. Challenger school is definitely not just focus on academics; it does have a great art and music (and possibly more) enrichment program. Unlike some of the reviews reported here, the preschool/kindergarten program director Ms. Geeta is a wonderful teacher: she is intelligent, responsible, caring and supportive of the best interests of the students enrolled at Challenger. During my daughter's time here, she has offered great advice for my daughter to grow. For example, once she told me that my daughter has been doing very well at school, but sometimes could be pushing herself too much, as she wanted to win all the contests and would start crying easily if that was not the case. She mentioned that my daughter needs to learn to take it easy when losing, or else she would not be set up for success in the long run. As a mom of a sensitive kid, I myself hadn't realized such implication earlier and could definitely use parenting advice like this. The headmaster Ms. Kwon is also a wonderful teacher and gives high priority on helping kids to reach their full potential here. On the other hand, she is also very caring: there has been many times that my daughter received help from her directly when getting a cut or fell in the playground. My whole family likes the Challenger Almaden school a lot and highly recommend it. But back in 2009-2010 school year when I walked in on the school's director and her assistant whom shall be not be named, while they had literally cornered a pre-schooler in an empty classroom and let's just say intimidatingly trying to make sure he learns his subject that was the last straw for me. My son has been attending Challenger now for just over two years, starting in the summer 3 year old program. We absolutely love this school. He has attended the two day three year old program, then both the three day and the five day (half days) four year old/kinder prep program (we added him to the 5 days after Christmas as he loved it so much!), and is just now finishing Kindergarten. The teachers are so positive and full of energy. It's apparent that they love working with children; they keep my son excited and engaged, and build him up. He's gained so much confidence and independence, and his academic progress has been impressive. He reads and writes at least one grade level above normal state standards, and he absolutely loves school. The logic and science courses are unparalleled in the area, and the emphasis on being respectful (to themselves and others) and being there to learn is fantastic. Every teacher, as well as the headmistress for preschool and Kindergarten (Ms. Matani), is passionate, friendly, and welcoming. We are starting our second son there this summer as well. We worried at first that the school had a reputation for being too rigorous or strict, but we have never found this to be the case. My son is an energetic, enthusiastic boy who is loud, exuberant, and always on the go - and he's never, ever had a problem here. In fact, he's always been so engaged that the times I've visited the classroom, he's never even noticed us walk in, he's so enthralled with the group discussion. I have with my own eyes witnessed teaching by intimidation not by teachers but by the director and her assistance around 2010 where they had a poor little boy alone in a classroom and pretty much yelling the material into him while the little boy was scared out of his mind. When I hear all the radio ads for Challenger school, it reminds me of the years my boys were there. My son was subjected to a great deal of bullying from the son of one of the administration. He was pushed in PE, made fun of in class and the teacher always talked with sarcasm. My many notes and complaints to the principal produced no results! The teachers' and employees' children do what they like and have no consequences. The education is all worksheets, no hands on, labs, or field trips of any sort. My son is in high school now but still hates that school and has a negative reaction every time we drive by it. The director of the school Ms.Gita is very loving, kind and very approachable. My son is very verbal, and he tells me everything that the teacher does in his class room. His teachers are Ms.M and Ms.Kim, so far I have not heard any negative comment or remarks from him about the teachers. In fact, he enjoys going to school. Apart from academics these are some things that my son has learnt from Challenger and he is just 5yrs old. 1. Respects others. 2. Make good choices. (This he learnt this year in Ms.M and Ms.Kim's class) this was his exact words, "mom, I can change this world by making good choices". 3. Think independently 4.
