This is my favorite mom n pop place to eat at in Houston. I used to come all the time when I was a kid. Prices have changed but the taste and service is still the same. Haven't been in over 2 years and when I finally got a chance to go and saw everything was literally 2$ more I was hurt however I love this place. I go and get the same thing every time! One of the best burgers around! I used tonwork down the street and would come to Champ Burger for breakfast and lunch and have never been disappointed! Champ burger with chili cheese fries and pink lemonade WHAAAAT! The grilled ham and cheese was my favorite. Bring cash as it is the only currancy they take. Legit local burger shop. Burgers are cooked right and made to order. The lunch special is only $8 for a burger, fries, and drink. Just walk up to the window and order. 5 min later, your order is done and you go home. I opted not to eat there because it's all outdoor seating and it's 100F outside, but the seating there looks adequate. Bottom Line: I'll be back for the awesome value lunch special. read more

I was near downtown and passed this place and all of a sudden had a taste for a burger. You walk up 2 the windows, order from a menu and wait for your food. You don't pay until the food is bagged and ready. I ordered the champ burger with swiss cheese and an order of fries. This has got to be one of the best tasting burgers I've had in a long time!! Fully seasoned, juicy and was a nice portion. The fries on the other hand were hot and fresh but bland in flavor. There's a place to sit and eat outside but it was a bit chilly out. This is the absolutely BEST burger place in all Houston! Been going there for 30years! It has the freshest vegetables and the burger meat is absolutely delicious as are the fries. For me, part of the magic is in the aromas exuding from the kitchen. It conjures up memories of old time burger stands replete with the smells of beef on a flat-top, fryer oil, onions, mustard. Seriously, this place should be cloned. I used to come here any time I was in the area (I worked in Webster, TX at the time) Outstanding burgers! Excellent Onion Rings! Fantastic owners! I'm a Swiss mushroom burger type of guy so that's my go to order when checking out burger joints. Scanned the reviews of Champ Burger and figured I'd give it a go. The line/wait was around 20 min but I was expecting that so it didn't faze me at all. The patty was nice, hand formed, juicy, with freshly sauteed mushrooms. The reason for the 3 stars was both the bun and the fries appeared to be your typical Sysco products and not homemade or locally sourced, freshly baked. With that said, I'll probably give them another try and I'll update my review at that time. edit: I went back and had the swiss mushroom burger again and it was better then when I originally had reviewed them I've upgraded my rating to a 4 from a 3 star. read more

Don't bother calling ahead. The phone ahead line is a joke. You will have to wait in line twice to get your food. Even with a 40 minute call ahead you will have an addition 20 to 25 minute wait. It is never ready on the first wait and ask at the walk up window, so you have to step back and wait while other people who are also standing around "second waiting" come up to check, get and pay for their food. Super slow for people who are trying to fit into a 30 minute lunch time. I would love to say that the hamburger was awesome and it was all worth it, but the meat had gristle in every third bite, 100% beef, yes, but cartilage is part of the beef. I worked at The Houston Chronicle for 30 years. We would order at least 3 times a week. The best chicken fried steak sandwich in Texas.You better have a big appetite. The meat is a 1/4" bigger than the bun. The taste is the bomb, Order an ice cold sweet original root beer.
