5 years ago I would've given this place a 2. They have worked hard to bring themselves up to par and have succeeded! Chandni - I salute you! We came here for a wedding ceremony during the early afternoon and reception in the evening. The wedding ceremony was beautifully done with banquet tables, an aisle way for the bride, mandap on a stage, and was very well put together. Food and buffet line for appetizers was placed in the far back. Mithai (Indian sweets), samosa, pakora, biryani, chicken and even french fries were served. Water pitchers were placed in the middle of each round table. The reception setup was completely different! I was amazed at how beautiful everything looked! The DJ booth, front stage, seating for bride and groom, dance stage and banquet setup for the room was flawless. Two buffet tables on either side of the room was very cleverly done and eased the traffic that could have occurred had only ONE buffet table been available. Food was also delicious! They of course had chicken makhni, saag paneer, basmati rice, naan, goat meat, but what really stood out to me was the lemon salmon; it was just amazing and melted in my mouth! Open bar? Thank you LORD! "Billie Jean is NOT my lover!" "tu meri amplifiya, FIYA!" "sadiii rail gadii aiyeeeee!" DJ was hilarious, and we were hilarious with our rail gaddi. Why do people eat here? The only people I know who eat here are bachelors who are starving and come for their cheap buffet. Their food is terrible. It's overcooked and filled with spice. Doesn't take fresh and is nasty. I won't pay any money for food like that. Their banquet hall also sucks, rude waiters And staff along with dirty bathrooms and smelly interiors. Came here multiple times. When someone tells me their party is at Chandni I automatically don't attend. You pay for what you get. This review is for the Banquet Hall If I could give this place a 0 star rating I would! I came here to discuss possibly having my wedding here. When we walked in they were setting up for a wedding. It looked really pretty, except for that the carpet is burgundy and gold so it clashed with the color/theme for the reception that they were setting up for. Anyways, we walked in and then asked if we could talk with someone about having my wedding here and a young woman went to get the events manager Sahir. He have us some information about the venue and then asked us to go to his office. We all walked back there and he answered our questions but was SO RUDE! He has some of the WORST customer service EVER! His attitude and negativity is what made me decide not to have my wedding or any future event here EVERRRR! He really needs to be fired because I'm sure he will continue to cause this venue to lose business. I've had my yelp account for a very long time and I've never wrote a review until now. That just shows you how rude Sahir was. I just can't believe how an events manager can be so rude when he should be accommodating and friendly because that's his JOB REQUIREMENT. I've been coming here for many many years, Chandni is a very well known restaurant! Came here during lunch with my mom, I wish I could go back right now the naan is the best! Went to Chandni for a family event and this is one of the worst indian restaurants in the Bay Area in my opinion. Its gaudy and dirty from the moment you step in. I came here for a wedding anniversary dinner/party and the table and chairs were draped. However, most of the white drapes showed curry stains. In my opinion, the way a restaurant presents itself in front of the house pretty much describes how it might be in the back of the house. So I wasn't really craving the food after seeing the place. I've never been a fan of buffets and here the food lacked any presentation what so ever. I ate some of the naan and this stir fry vegetarian dish that sat there, since that seemed like a safer option. Naan tasted like it was microwaved and the vegetarian dish was bland and lacked seasoning. The only thing i was looking forward to was dessert and saw rasmalai, a favorite of mine usually. As i poured myself some, i noticed a long sting of hair floating on top. Disgustingly threw my bowl away and told one of the servers. He simply took out the piece of hair with a spoon in front of me, left the tray of rasmali there and simply walked away. So that pretty much sums up Chandni. I was relieved i didn't really eat much of the nasty food served here. This place should be shut down for its lack of cleanliness. Stay away from this hair and stain infested joint! read more

I've ordered food from here twice now, and seriously doubt that I'll do it again. First: the food itself is all right. Not great, but it's okay. It passes, though leftovers don't do well at all. And I don't know about the buffet, since I was ordering for our office staff, and you can't dip into the buffet for "to go" orders. Anyway. The first time I ordered seemed like all was going well. They needed an hour to get things together, which seemed long, but okay -- and they gave me a time to show up. I got there and they told me it wasn't ready. I had to park my butt for another TWENTY MINUTES. I told them I had to get back to work, etc. etc., but nothing -- no apology, no discount, nothing. "Just a moment more." TWENTY MINUTES. Okay. So. Time heals all wounds, right? So today I placed another order. So I'm ordering from their online menu, and the woman several times said "we don't have that anymore." Okay -- so now I'm on the spot, making substitutions for my co-workers' choices. Oh, well -- they'll live. How long before it's ready? 40-50 minutes. Okay. Twenty minutes later, the woman calls back and tells me they have no lamb thawed (!) and the chicken must be ordered two or three days in advanvce. You've gotta be kidding me. Isn't lamb kind of a staple of Indian food? And -- I didn't exactly order blowfish or anything: it's tandoori chicken, for pete's sake. Anyway -- A) Why did she not already know this? and B) What the hell do they do if a customer in the restaurant orders something? Do they just assume everybody's going to get the buffet? Okay, so I ask her what they DO have, and make my substitutions. At this point, my order is looking almost nothing like what my co-workers requested. She kept trying to push the goat meat and asking how many people were eating. I said eight. She insisted I wasn't ordering enough, but I knew I was. So I added one more order of naan which sort of placated her. So I call back in another half hour and ask when the food will be ready. She protests that, because of their twenty minute delay, it will still be 40-50 minutes. I think the sound of me very patiently repeating, "So... when do they think it will be ready?" tipped her off finally that maybe her business skills needed honing, so she said that when the food was ready, she would call. Fine. Cool, even. Okay. So I keep working and I get the call. Food's ready. Cool. I go over there and they start bringing out tons of food -- way too much. I can tell I made a mistake in saying how many we were feeding when the guy wheeled out the food saying, "Catering for eight." Awwwww crap. But okay. We'll have leftovers. For much of Africa. Well, it turned out everything wasn't ready after all. Please wait; just a few more minutes. Well, it wasn't twenty minutes like last time, but it was ten, and they had called and said come and get it, so I was ticked. I told the guy that she had said it was READY. "Tea?" "I don't want tea -- she said it was ready, and it wasn't ready. This is twice I've been here, and twice this has happened." "Tea?" Again: no apology, no discount, nothing. Frankly, that's bullshit. So the upshot to this long-winded, in-the-heat-of-the-moment review is: Chandis sucks for catering. Maybe go for the buffet and keep your expectations dialed down. I came here for a traditional Punjabi wedding reception (the last of the three festivities). The hall was pretty big and it had its own entrance. I liked how the guests walked in from one side to be greeted by the family to take pics through an indoor doorway so no one was missed. The decor was sparkly and lighted (just like everyone's sari's). The bar, appetizers and dinner was well put together and they have a stage and a dance floor. The service was attentive and the buffett style worked since there were a lot of people and Punjabi people and Korean people have the same problem with being late! The samosas were small and had a lot of breadding, but it was pretty good. The nan and curries weren't bad and the fried veggies and tandoori chicken were good. I ate some other stuff that my friend told me the name of and tried, but I didn't like - this included the sweet, wet donut circle thing. But everything else was good and the restaurant was clean. This place comes though in the clutch for many South Asian families looking to have an event. Chandni has a LOT of space and through the years have definitely improved their cuisine. I have been here many times since my high school days for a variety of events like weddings, baby showers, fundraisers, and religious ceremonies and the restaurant generally does a decent job of keeping everyone happy. Now, being that it is placed right smack dab in the middle of Newark suburbia it isn't a whole lot attractive to be at compared to some other venues in SF or downtown Oakland but it tends to have some availability and I am sure it is much more affordable than in some random museum. The food is definitely good, but if you are looking for a more intimate affair you might have to look elsewhere. read more

I am very partial to this place since i got married here. However i can honestly say that they have really improved their restaurant much since i got married here almost 6 years ago. The food has always been good and they do a great job for weddings. They have taken the positives and just expanded everything about themselves. I just went back about 3 months ago for a family event and the rooms are much improved plus they remodeled and added a lot more space. The food has always been the most reasonable priced for large groups. They are never going to be the best Indian/Pakistani food in the bay area but when you got to feed 100+ people there isn't a place i would rather go. They work with your budget. if you do not have a lot of money they can provide less expensive options of food to get the cost per person down. on the flip side you can get higher quality food and pay more. they have a few spaces and will set you up based on number of guests. i kid you not i have been to 100 plus weddings here since i was 10 years old. read more

I have never been at this place for anything other than a reception for a Punjabi style wedding, or a Punjabi style kid's birthday. GOOD: NOTHING. DECENT: VENUE. The bathrooms are generally gross, the staff is average at best, and worst of all, the FOOD SUCKS. Just awful. And this is practically unanimous amongst many people I know. Anyone who knows anything about desi food knows this place sucks. I only go here when forced to because of weddings and other events. Where to begin with this tale of mediocrity. So all the food I have had from here on big occasions has been piss poor bad. Greasy, oily, pan size catastrophes that put to shame the Pakistani culinary tradition. The naans are not nice and buttery. The tea is not aromatic and flavorful. And the prayers rugs leave red marks on my head for some reason. Here is my advice. If your in that area and your dying for desi food go next door to mehran whose food in my opinion is better. And if you don't mind driving a little more go to the Shalimar in Fremont (the one in the City is better though) and eat there. I wish I can give this place a zero rating. I came here with a bunch of families for my friend's birthday only to get intimidated. We took the lunch buffet option on a weekend. Firstly, I should say that is one of the worst kid friendly or family friendly restaurants in bay area. Their food is terrible. The chicken and mutton was weeks old. It doesn't smell or taste fresh. They have very rude waiters and staff. I had a 3yr old kid with me during the visit there, and the waiter just snapped at me saying that I should not make the kid sit on the chair because they just make them dirty spilling food on it. My son is not used to a high chair, since he is too tall for it. I don't know how he can expect me to forcibly make him sit in a high chair. I eventually ended up putting my kid in my lap. He also didn't want my son coming near the buffet area and overtly reacted at me for everything. read more

This is one of the best Indian restaurants in the whole of Bay Area. Their service is exceptional. The waiters and the manager comes around, chats with you for a few minutes and also checks periodically whether everything is fine. I can guarantee you that there is no other Indian restaurant that gives this much importance to service. And on the food - I am an Indian but I am also a person who loves food when spices and flavors are used right. According to me their food is well made and is very competitively priced. I have been there couple of times now and this has become one of my favorites. First time I went there, they had the lunch buffet. I am amazed by the number of good non-Vegetarian dishes. They even served Beef which is normally absent in most Indian and Pakistani buffets. That day they had a Beef curry, Goat curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, Goat Paya (A goat bone soup) above the usual Thandoori chicken. They also had a wonderfully flavored Haleem - Meat and lentils cooked together into a thick mildly-spicy dish. I have eaten at least two plates of Haleem that day! Everything served there was done right with the right amount of spices. The second time I went there, I ordered Papri Chat, Chicken Karahi, Mutton Biriyani and Nan. The Papri Chat was totally different but was wonderfully tasty. It was a bit spicy but even my son enjoyed it. The quantity of all the food was more than expected and hence we took a lot back home. This review is for the lunch buffet. I went there with my wife who is Pakistani and kids. The food was so spicy to the level that you can't eat it. My wife who eats very spicy food was not able to eat herself. The kids can't eat any of the food as well except the salad and bread. what a waste of money! I thought I can't get better Pakistani food after Shahnawaz in Milpitas. Wrong! Chandni is even better. EVERYTHING is good. Even the achaat (sp?) is better. One unique thing about them is they have buffet lunch and dinner 7 days a week. I usually like the buffet at Indian and Pakistani restaurants because you can taste more dishes. One other thing they will not let you pack a take out from the buffet. Not sure why, because usually one can eat a lot more sitting there than one can pack in one of those take out boxes. I adore Chandi! One of my Mom's friends from Pakistan first brought us for the weekend lunch buffet. After that we continued to go two or three times a month for several months before I started working weekends. I have only had the buffet here, I've never done the sit and order table service. I don't see the point. The buffet has varied dishes that change each visit and they are always served hot, fresh, and tasty. The waiter brings you all-you-can-eat Nann and refills your water. They usually have hot Chai tea in the buffet and I always like to drink a cup or two of that. The buffet dishes vary, there is always something made with chicken and something made with lamb. Other dishes vary. All food is Halal. They sometimes have Tandoori Chicken drum sticks, those are good. There is always rice and there are several types of chutneys and other sides to compliment your dish. There are typically several vegetarian options, though I don't know if I would reccomend the buffet to a vegetarian. One of my favorite things about Chandi is that they are the only Pakistani buffet I know of that serves gublab jaman in the buffet consistently. I absolutly adore gulab jaman. They are shaped like a donut-hole and are about the same size. They are very sweet and syrupy. Romantic: Yes - if it isn't crowded and loud. After waiting 20 mins to get service with no other customers, Mr. Singh showed to the buffet which was empty at the height of lunch hour to an empty dining room. After getting my food and walking out the door, I was asked if I paid, I recalled paying, so I turned around and said "why don't you double check", Mr. Singh asked for my receipt and I said I selected "no receipt" on the printer, to which he said "don't lie to me" while I was holding my wallet and taking out my credit card to pay, if I hadn't. This place is famous for its spacious banquet hall. Their buffet does not have as many selection as Bombay Garden, but they are very tasty nonetheless. I really like Chandni, because their food is not too salty or greasy. Their naan is fresh and out of this world! My Indian friends prefer Chandni over Bombay Garden. They said that Chandni has more authentic dishes than Bombay Garden. I prefer going to Bombay Garden for lunch and Chandni for dinner. Chandni has a quieter atmosphere and much calmer compare to Bombay Garden. It is certainly a gem hidden away in a rundown plaza. **UPDATE** I visited Chandni two days ago for a baby shower. The area designated for the group was tastefully sectioned off. The privacy was great. However, most of the dishes were too spicy even for me and I eat jalapeos out of the jar!! If food is not your top priority, I would go for this place. They have 3 banquet halls, and can accommodate very large parties. The decor is slightly above decent. Center pieces were very pretty, but the flowers were fake. You can do wonders with the halls, they have potential to look really good. If you are on a tight budget look into this place. It shares a parking lot with a carls jr, and I think two other Indian/Pakistani restaurants, so I would only do a mehndi or a birthday party or an anniversary here. Absolutely horrible customer service. The manager is extremely stingy and rude. I scheduled an event before corona and put in a deposit, and once corona hit the manager will not allow my event to take place the way it was arranged or even give a return on the deposit. Food in Iftar buffet was not fresh and completely tasteless. I could feel that chicken tikka masala was reheated multiple times. Punjabi curry had lost it color. Daal had zero taste at all as they have only boiled the daal. Naan were cold. Dahi bara were worst. Who put nimko in dahi bara? Gulab jaman were so old that I felt that I was trying to eat rubber. All that while they had a small group who was getting special treatment. The owner told those people in front of me that they should not get Nan from buffet. Came here around 8pm on a Monday to have dindin with friends. The staff of family rushed us and was hovering over us on whether to choose buffet or order from the menu. The seats were super hard and my buttum was soon too numb. The food took awhile to come out, so I'm assuming they cooked it fresh? We ordered raita (too sour and plain), assorted pakora (no paneer and it was tasteless and burned), paneer subji (decent) and vegetable subji (tasted like pav bhaji), chicken tikka (there was blood dripping from it so I'm not sure how halal that is) and the water tasted like chemical tap water. Came to Chandni restaurant for a Lady Sangeet in the family. It has a nice large car park and is large enough to have two parties going at the same time in adjoining halls. They have an interesting ceiling with 2 x 8 garden fence extensions in a diamond pattern and linen curtains, it works. Tables are nicely decorated with candles, flowers, etc and they lay out tableware which was clean. For starters we had mini samosas, aloo tikki, chutney, galaab jamman and burfi, which was very good, no hairs in the food and spice was ok. For lunch we had mah dahl, saag paneer, shahi paneer, naan and salad. Food was nice and spicy, hot and the wait staff did come by to refill pitchers of water and take away dishes when you finish eating. They also have free WiFi in both halls so you can surf or check email if dining. They have a nice sound system with ample space to dance or chat with family and friends. This is a really good place to have a party as it is a large hall with nice tables, layout and enough privacy. If you need a really big hall, you could rent out both walls, I am sure there is an adjoining wall that likely comes apart. 4 stars read more

I have been going to Chandni for years now. Weddings, socials, family gatherings, parties, you name it, Chandni is on top of it all. Their decor is just breathe taking, and Samira does an absolutely amazing job with it all. The food is incredibly delicious, from so many options to choose from; briyani, tandoori chicken are my favorite, and of course the keer (rice pudding- aamazing). They work with your budget and try to do their best at accommodating all of your needs into a package that works with you. I work with a non-profit organization (The Pakistan Association of San Francisco Bay Area), and we do numerous events at Chandni. Every time we need a room for a meeting or a hall for an event, Chandni hooks it up like no other. To sum it up, Chandni is a one-stop-shop. What more does anyone need. read more

Went to a fundraising event here over the weekend. The banquet facility seems hastilly put together, the cieling is covered in some kind of wood grating that one would use to hold up roses in a yard and there are christmas lights hanging everywhere? The chairs were covered on white? Very odd. There were about 700 people at the event and the staff did a good job keeping waters full, picking up dishes, keeping the buffet stocked etc, hence the two stars. The food was awful. This is an okay restaurant the service is not really good. And also this one man said to get out when we just went in to drink some tea and he just said get out for no reason because we were sitting on a clean table instead of a dirty. I got really mad and their food is not that good. read more
