The birria was very flavorful and I loved the hint of cilantro in it. The burrito was also very good, but it was huge! The food was amazing, but the service was over the top! (I asked my server for his name which he gave, but I cannot remember. He had glasses and black hair.) My server greeted me almost immediately even though it was packed inside, he sat us down and guided us through the menu, giving us the most popular options to go for. He recommended the birria tacos and really knew what he was talking about! We were checked on multiple times by him and it honestly made me feel like I was at home, absolutely loved it! Despite having so many things to attend to, he made sure we were one of them. On a bit of a negative note, when I visited for the first time last week around 11, the service wasn't as good. I visited Maya's on Saturday and it was surprisingly quiet. The interior is beautifully decorated, and I really appreciated having a sit-down location instead of just the to-go spot in Oakland. What's more impressive than listening to Bad Bunny at the Super Bowl? Listening to Bad Bunny while having some of the best tacos this side of the Rio Grande. The fish tacos were super crispy and the nachos were too. I had the steak enchiladas which were amazing and also large enough portions that I have plenty left for lunch tomorrow. The taquitos were pretty good but I think it could have used more meat since the outside tortilla was on the thicker side. For the tacos the handmade tortillas were awesome! The marinade and flavors of the tacos are not your usual Mexican spices. It definitely packs a punch with the kick. I think the tacos could have also used some more meat. Overall I think portion size to price could be improved on since it is on the expensive side but I do appreciate how late they're open. We came in around 9:30 from really far away; around a 40 minute drive to get here. I was expecting amazing service and I wasnt let down. Food was so good that it exceeded my expectation. We were a family of 5 and we all ordered something different and everything was absolutely great. Cali burrito, steak fries, chicken flautas, and of course birria tacos; they were all so delicious. The atmosphere was perfect, I loved the ambient lighting and the little chandeliers they had. And the music playing was amazing I loved it so much. I was slightly confused since it appeared to be a sit down restaurant and I always assumed it was a casual taqueria. The inside is very nice and modern. Service was friendly. The taste and quality is very good. We ordered the Lady Boss Burrito with steak and 4 tacos. I tried the fish taco, Birria taco, and steak taco. I liked the crispy cheese bottom on the taco. Located just blocks from the highway and conveniently near gas stations, grocery shops, coffee shops, and parks, this place has the foundations to draw in some crowds but due to the aging buildings of this mall and being overshadowed by the Union Landing mall down the street, doesn't seem to have caught the community by storm yet. With a shared lot with mostly grab and go shops, you'll almost always be able to get a spot nearby. Beautifully decorated with its purple hue, your first steps through the door will be illuminated and met with wall murals, decorative lights, and faux floral arrangements all bringing a fresh breath of life to your senses (the amazing ventilation in the room certainly helps too). As you find your seats in the dining room, you will no doubt notice the vibrantly colored cushioned chairs that will soon provide comfort during your meal. We were helped right away and were provided menus and waters to get us situated. The menu was quite extensive offering quite a variety of dishes including tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, fries, and set combo plates. We got a sampling of items for the table to share and it was good that we did, because the portions were larger than expected! Taquitos - comes with four bite sized crispy rolled tacos topped with fresh salsa and cotija cheese. These bites were so crispy yet flavorful with all the toppings and sour cream. Probably could eat the whole plate just by myself! Super quesadilla - huge crispy slices of cheesy quesadilla packed with your choice of meat served with a side of sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. This was a favorite of the table and was really good as leftovers too. Boss lady burrito - hefty burrito packed with hour choice of meat, rice, beans, cheese and salsa. Comes wrapped in foil to retain the heat and served with a few pieces of chips and pico de gallo. Wet burrito - this monstrosity of a burrito is drenched in enchilada sauce and takes a fork and knife to eat. By far, one of the best wet burritos I have had due to its size, fillings and sauce. I would get this again! The choices of meat were great - the favorite of the table was the birria beef but they also have ground beef, steak, grilled chicken, shredded chicken, shrimp and fish (the latter typically costing a few dollars more). Most of the dishes also come with pico de gallo, so you'll get a nice fresh condiment with your meal. If you're looking to add a bit of a kick to your meal, ask for their hot sauce (hot or mild); it's not too spicy but does add an extra component to your bites. The prices for the entrees were higher than most places I've been for Mexican food, but given the big portions, quality of execution, and beautiful presentation, I can understand the premium tag. However, the price is certainly a deterrent for frequent visits but a meal out here every blue moon is reasonable to satisfy that craving. Service was phenomenal; our server, Oscar, did an amazing job making us feel welcomed and helped us thoroughly enjoy the meal. They were great about being proactive in their service like serving waters without prompts, providing extra plates knowing the kiddos were going to share, and being available to answer questions and close out the check. Overall, Maya Halal does a wonderful job showcasing its culture through its interior decor, food presentation, and flavors. The service is not what you'd expect in a mall shared with quick food/takeout establishments but the prices certainly is a shocker. Given the quality and quantity of food, it still does seem fair for an option to address those tummy grumbles for Mexican food while also sticking to a halal diet. The Chipotle Shrimp tacos are the best! I don't do pineapple in anything, but these tacos are the only exception. They continue to be my all time favorite shrimp tacos ever so far. They have so many vegetarian options and the quality is great. You can definitely taste it. The place is super cute and chill. The service has been mixed. I have had great service and I have also had poor service. Now, I only order for delivery because the bad service was worse than the great service I had. I don't want to risk it. The heat from the chipotle peppers is def there & complimented the high quality shrimp very well. There were diced pineapples on top as well, however I wish there was just a bit more The steak taco was really good quality meat & juicy. Meat had no fat in it. The tortilla bread is most likely made in house and held the tacos together well. Sizing wise they are both the size of a street taco & 2 was enough got me along with some chips and house made salsa. Both times I've gone in tables are filled with families (mostly women for some reason on my outs with a child or two), wearing more modernized burqas. Everyone is smiling and having a good time...whilst eating tacos, burritos and nachos.. Unique I reaffirm. Yes many of the menu items are super familiar to most Californians and even the flavors are pretty authentic that even someone with a built in Mexican palate would find this admirable. And since they are using all halal meats, everything will be a tad pricier than most regular taqueria, which many categorize as 'cheap eats'. Now even though not cheap here, as a meal with a drink here wll approach/top the $20 mark. But you will get a much prettier plating, table service and IMO very solid tasting food. Shrimp Taco ($6ish/4*) Medium shrimps are cut into smaller chunks and fried with a very light crisp coating. It has a little spicing, served with chopped onions and cilantro and some light but smooth fresh tomato salsa. I'm going to try their shrimp and steak burrito next. Carne Asada Taco ($5ish/4*) Finely diced grilled carne asada, I can taste the quality of the beef. All tacos here are on hand pressed corn tortillas, so it is very tender and supple. I'm sure it is much better eaten as soon as you get it, versus to-go. People, stop traveling your tacos, they are meant to be eaten within minutes. In Mexico people will even stand and woof down their tacos and then get on with their way; versus trying to go somewhere then eating it. Americans need to stop doing this! Lol Fish Taco ($6ish/5*) Didn't ask what type of fish but it was good. Fresh and cut into bigger chunks, so maybe I liked the more substantial bites. Lightly battered so it was mostly fish you sensed than batter. Some fish tacos you'll sense more batter. I just wished their tacos were a tad bigger, as within 3 small bites, I'm left with crumbs. Quesabirra Tacos Plate ($20/5*) Whoa this is the thing to get here, if you're hard to make a pick and/or it's your first time. I'm not a huge fan of this usually as many are too greasy for me, so the grease along with the amount of cheese just makes me queasy. But here they don't fry their quesatacos in that birria orange grease, or if they do, they don't overdo it. The flavorful birria meat and cheese ratio is perfect and the game changer thing they do is they'll fry shredded cheese onto that tortilla so crisp cheese is inbedded into every bite...so friggin' good! And their consomme that's on the side is crazy good. Actually has some viscosity to it, not just orange hued greasy broth. It actually clings a bit when dipped into versus just making things soggy. Served with a small bowl of rice and beans of choice. Oh and ask for their spicy salsa as it is perfect for this dish. I'm going to start using it for anything I order from now on. It is medium spicy, complex and has a great unique flavor that lingers quite well. Very cool find in my area and would proudly be a reg. A taqueria with a twist to fit the area. There's no waiting space inside, so we were stuck waiting outside in the cold with two toddlers. We had to repeat the order again and again, and he only brought 3 waters for a table of 9. We literally had to ask for plates 3 times. Then, after ordering so much food, they tried to charge extra for sour cream--come on, put in some effort for a large group. We had to ask for salsa, and the lady brought one tiny container for 9 people. As for the food, the only plus is that it's halal. If you don't care about that, don't waste your time.
