This place has been around for a long time, and is popular with the locals! I came from out of town, and enjoyed it. Compared to other Mongolian Grills that I've been to, it isn't my favorite one, and feels a bit run down. It's very simple and there aren't a ton of instructions or options with sauces. That being said, the food was delicious, and there are tons of options for veggies and ways that you can still change up your dish. I had a good time and would recommend it. Tip: lunch is cheaper, but it does get busy right at opening! read more

Ooooh, kind of like a smorgasbord. The ingredients are out and you can pick and choose the flavors (oils), veggies, and meats. You pills it all in a bowl (or two) and take it to the cooks. They put your food on it and cook it within about 2 minutes. "Quick shed dirty." read more

I have not been to this location for about a year. I was disappointed. They changed the hot oil that used to be part of the make your own sauce to be out on by the nuts at the end. The oil was the perfect touch. They now offer hot sauce, which way to spicy for me. Wish I'd had know about this change before making my stir fry ! Overall quality was down. read more

Wow. Haven't been to Chang's in about 2 years. The prices were great, food was delicious, service was prompt and they still do a free birthday meal on your actual birthday (with ID). The nostalgia of this place makes it always 5 stars for me. The lunch ingredients have gone down in quality and I have not been for dinner in years. Usually dinner has better items. That said, it's relatively cheap to take 4 kids to lunch. Service is always top notch (with a few horrible failures on occasion, but I'm not lowering the rating off one person). I've been going here at least 30 years, and the smell is seasoned into the building, but it's the cleanest I've ever seen it these days. Highly suggest. read more

Not really my cup of tea: as the first time going to a Mongolian grill it felt a little chaotic going through the line to fill bowls and then get it all cooked, as we were there right as they were doing last call. The servers were super nice though and encouraged us to go get more. They have a variety of protein options, including fish and chicken, if you don't eat lamb and beef. We went here for lunch. It was a nice and casual atmosphere. We were greeted right when we walked in and sat almost immediately. It was my first time here and it's pretty good! The waitstaff was quick and asks you what you want to drink and it comes with either hot and sour soup or egg flower soup. We were also surprised with a complimentary dessert at the end. The food station was tidy. You had to either sanitize your hands or gloves were provided. You gathered as many bowls as you wanted (I used 2, one for my protein and the other for noodles and vegetables). At the end of the bar is an array of sauces. I like that you can tailor the flavor to your liking. AND you can keep going back for seconds and thirds if you want to. 10/10 would go again. read more

I was looking for a buffet in this part of town and this came up on my radar. The building looks a little old and the service is lacking. There is unlimited Mongolian BBQ. The selection is not that great. There are 4 meats, 2 noodles, and maybe 10-15 items to put in the bowl. There is a good variety of sauces to mix. The cooks never took long to cook my food. Changs has been around since I was a kid and I am now almost 34. A few of the cooks have worked there since my first visit so that's a positive sign. It's pretty no frills, get seated and head to the buffet station. There are plenty of meat and vegetable options, if you want flavor in the food, it's up to to sauce it up. I recommend a grabbing two bowls, one for protein and one for veggies. I also recommend using a few ladles of everything at the sauce station. If the cooks start pouring water on your food...you messed up by not adding enough flavor. It can get Pretty busy during the weekend so be prepared for that. You also can get wraps, rice, soup and desert including with the price of your meal. It's actually a great deal, and if you're trying to eat keto this place is literal heaven. read more

Food selection is very good, especially meat and seafood. The sauce selection is poor, as are the labels. The line is ridiculous! The cooks are nice and quick, but a second grill would be nicer. I haven't been to this location ever but I figured they were all the same, I was very wrong. This particular Chang's is a bit beat up and I didn't enjoy our dinning experience too much. Let me say that our waiters customer service was great, he was older but still funny and playful. They kept our water filled and were always asking if we were okay. I was saddened to see super small shrimp because that isn't stir fry shrimp... In my opinion. The other Chang's in NE Portland has bigger shrimp. I only ate one plate which isn't unusual but the taste was just off to me. When you can make better food at home it's hard to settle for less. I wouldn't recommend Chang's to anyone. I used to like it, past couple times I ate I got sick. I only go when my mother comes up from out of town to visit... The most recent visit was 11/12/23.. Got seated, no server came up to us, had to walk up to an employee and ask for drinks.. On my way to the food, not sure if it was a guest! Or something else, but a STRONG smell of urine by where they pour the drinks. Even my girlfriend asked if I smelt it when we were grabbing our food. The only thing that makes me dislike the place is how close everybody gets while grabbing their food. You can literally feel them breathe down your neck. I literally had somebody stick their tong into the dish when I was grabbing food out of it. Like wtf? Chefs seem like they hate their job as well. Like I said earlier past couple times I got sick, will not be going back unless mother visits town and I don't think I will be eating there unfortunately. BEAVERTON location is MUCH, MUCH nicer. How is it that on a Sunday night....8pm....the seats are not all filled but when I go to put my noodle dish together I have to wait in line to create my bowl....turn around....and then wait in another 10-15 min. line for it to get cooked. Really!? If I'm at Changs that means I'm HUNGRY! The service is always fine. However, they are not good at re-filling drinks. Actually, they never asked/came by once to re-fill my water or soda. Also, why is it that no matter how much sauces and spices you add to your bowl that it never tastes like said sauces. And then because of this I have to drench my entire plate in siracha and plum sauce. 3 scoops of garlic, some ginger, soy, hot oil, thai chillies, and NO taste? Interesting. I know COVID has affected us all: both the business and the consumers of business services. For decades I've been going to Portland Chang's for lunches and dinners. I have even worked out my own routine around "no to-go" policy of the chain: the number of bowls, the amount of food and proportions, various sauces to make the experience pleasant and memorable. I leave nothing on the plate - no food goes to waste in my case... COVID changed things. All of us are lucky to have jobs while millions are unemployed and looking for ways to feed their families even if this means taking lower paying jobs or any job... Trust me, I am very pleased that Chang's is still around, but the atmosphere and service have gone down the drain. At all Chang's restaurants these days you can't ask for sauces on a side anymore: every bit of food needs to touch the grill. I am OK with this; I adapted and gave up on my side sauces. Then the company introduced the three bowl limit. OK, I managed. Today this limit was reduced to two. (What can you fit in two bowls when I started with four?) OK, once again, I adapted and now have to make several runs to the grill instead of one (which left my plate always empty)... Service negligence and rudeness was the last straw that broke the camel's back for me. This Chiang's location is probably the worst one of three in SW Portland. The staff doesn't care that you are even there - you will be lucky to be checked up on once when you sit down. They make a huge deal if you ask for a spoon or an extra napkin. Cooks are plain rude yet expect you to tip them. Tea sometimes is served cold... For the record, things listed above did not happen all at once, yet they all happened at this Chang's location. And yes, I did try to attribute all those things happening to now having to explain the non-native speakers of English what services you want from them, ingredients for the grill, sauces proportions. I had staff argue with me that "this is their new policy and that no, I can't have it my or any other way", then treating me as crap from that moment on till I left. The "portioning Nazi" (a short grilling chef) today was so rude to me with his "is THIS enough for you?!" said to me 9-10 times over a single ingredient - that I was literally afraid that he will spit into my food just to seal my answer... At some point you, as a consumer, just have to say I've had enough. And I just did. Once I finish writing this review I will tell the staff that I will not be coming back to this location... I hope that the restaurant owners read this message and look into their service(s). In the light of so many service industry people being unemployed, (this location of) Chang's can benefit from getting all new service staff. So many good people out there would love to demonstrate their service excellence and customer care in these difficult days COVID disruption. read more

Went here for my first time last night, I enjoyed my meal immensely the first time, second plate was fine, my third unfortunately was sullied by the peppers cooked on the surface before mine. made my third plate way waaaay too spicy to eat. So i do wish there was more cleaning of the cooktop surface between plates. I enjoyed the options for sauces veggies and meats, seemed very much the normal experience. Genuine and quiet place. Food comes in huge variety beyond imagination. Usually you just get a plate and sit, but there's more food at the table. The definition of not going hungry. I like the hand sanitizer at the end of the bar. Huge respect for a clean freak. The bathrooms are nice too. Friendly staff and very thoughtful. I love places close to home to me. The place is very nice for decor but don't let that scare you. The food speaks for itself. Definitely a save to my favorites in my gps. This place is definitely a bang for your buck. I'm not sure why the mediocre reviews...? I'm always happy with my choice going here. Let's all be honest....we are not going here for a gourmet experience, or a feast of authentic Asian food. No....we are going here for a mountain of noodles, slabs of thin sliced meat, and tons of or fav veggies all soaked in our sauces of choice. It can either be we are on a carb and fat cheat day, or going because we can choose to have absolutely NO carbs or fat in our dinner, which is SO easy to do here!!! My reason is usually the latter, as carbs for me are quite a treat when I choose to screw over my healthy eating spree, so when I want carbs I go to an Italian joint. Pasta and bread please. Not rice and sugary sauces. I go all out. Seriously. As for Chang's, they do a fab job of giving us tons of fresh veggies to choose from. I love that they bring out a bowl, or two, or three of rice and also they give rice paper "pancakes" that works great to fabricate your own little Asian burritos. My daughter goes ballistic for those. The restaurant itself does need some upkeep and more love put into it, that's my cause for 4 not 5 stars. The carpet is screaming to be replaced!!! :0 It's kind of cute, the guys that work the grill have been there since forever. I remember getting my then toddler daughter just five noodles and mooshed rice for her here 10yrs ago, now she (my almost teen ) takes two trips of bowls full of noodles plus downs a entire bowl of rice and ice cream to boot. Changs has been in this area for years, if anyone recalls the old location in the now demolished Tanasbourne Mall that lies in ashes under Target, Best Buy and others stores. I was pleased today as it appears they have started to care about the look. It was getting dingy and nasty looking they have cleaned it up a bit. The exterior still needs so work and landscaping. The food is decent and fun. I enjoy mixing my own food for the grill. The soup has never been good but the rice and pancakes are always fresh. I love this place. They seat you immediately, their waitstaff is very kind (and kind of funny) and their service it prompt. Our waiter kept joking with our son and it was really cute and the whole family enjoyed eating here throughly. The food is always pretty good too. I'd give this place a five star for the food, but the rest of the place draws down the score a lot. The food is great! You get to select your choice of meets, veggies, and seasonings to be fried up together on a grill in front of you. The quality of the food they use is good, so if it doesn't taste good it's your own fault. The service here is pretty good and friendly, but it's not like you are getting table service for anything other than drinks; if you want more food go get in line. All that said... The decor is a little dated (early 90's), lighting is poor, and all of the HVAC vents need cleaned a couple years ago. And a pet peeve, I can not for the life of me understand why any place with windows would leave the shades perpetually closed when there is zero chance of customers being blinded by the sun. The cooking area here needs a lot of attention. The floors, runoff basins, and grease traps need cleaned more than once a day (looking at them now one would think it's been a few days). I'm sure my food is being cooked on a sanitary surface, but the lack of cleanliness wouldn't make most people believe that. Concerning the cooking area, make sure to tip the cooks. The worse thing about this place is the way they refill their "buffet" table. Food safety regulations require a restaurant to replace the holding container of food in a buffet line and not to "top it off" (leaving older food on the bottom and unused). The couple times I saw them refill the table they just topped it off. Granted, all the items have to be cooked, likely killing any food-born disease, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Oh, and a customer service complaint. All of their other chains will use the chocolate syrup for their ice cream to make chocolate milk for my kids. This place wouldn't do that. Would I come back here. Ya, but only if it was a matter of convenience; I would choose any of the chain's other locations over this one if time and location wasn't a factor. read more

I have been going to this location since I was 10 years old. I am now in my 40's! The last two times I have visited, they threw my food on the table aka soup rice and wraps. This location has really just gone down in service. They put the incorrect count of people at our table, charged us more than they should have. Stopped me and my whole family at the door while we were leaving and told us we didn't pay ENOUGH! I wouldn't recommend this location anymore. I would use the other Beaverton or Tigard location as they are way more clean and don't throw ur food on the table! read more

Egg drop soup wasn't my favorite flavor I'll try the hot and sour next time. After my first experience I would get two bowls one for meat and noodles the other for veggies. The line at dinner took 10-15 mins. It would be nice to be with a group where someone can stay at the table with the kids.
