The food was good but the manager was telling me that the fee was for two bowls and you take one to go. This sounded unusual so I asked again and he confirmed that was what he meant. I asked the guy at the grill and he said the same thing I get my bill and oh guess what, that is NOT what the actual rule is! Takeout is a SEPARATE FEE and this was not communicated at all! I had been REPEATEDLY told the opposite, by two different people! So now I have two fees, one for dine in and one for takeout, and the guy makes a big deal about halving the takeout fee. I have to stress multiple times that this is not at all what he told me. FINALLY he takes the takeout fee off, even though I never should have been charged it to begin with. No rules are displayed. None of this would have been available to know anywhere but his word. I know there's a language barrier but an employee did back it up. And please just have it displayed! Probably in English and Spanish given the common languages in the area. I just can't go back, not after being flat out lied to by two employees about how much it actually costs. I have always loved this place. I have been coming here for almost 20 years. Now, my 7 year old loves this place more than I. The service is always attentive and kind. While this is not a super fancy joint and the interior appears largely changes over the last 20 years, everything is clean, and it has its own charm. The ingredients are always fresh, and there is quite a variety. It's all you can eat, so there is no rush, but I like to go so hard on round 1 I don't need to go back. You get soup and ice cream with your meal, and I believe you can also ask for rice and rice paper. Kids are half price. My son and I ate until we promised heavens that we would never eat food again. Gengis Khan doesn't disappoint! The buffet food bar is always stocked with fresh ingredients, including tofu for my fellow vegetarians. They have a wide variety of meats, vegetables, and sauces, with the most delicious noodles. They are cooked to perfection on a massive grill, where you can watch the chef prepare your meal. You also have the option of hot and sour soup or egg drop soup (egg drop is vegetarian), rice papers, a side of rice, and soft serve ice cream to complete your meal. There is plenty of seating, including for large groups. On top of all of the other positives, the owners are incredibly friendly and hardworking people. First off, do not let first appearance fool you. This place is a diamond in the rough. Service and food are amazing. But it's dark inside and very dated. It could also use a deep cleani g of the walls and floors. Some updates would make this place 5 stars easily. However, they're always so nice and the ingredients have always been fresh. This is a favorite spot of mine and I always stop in when I can. It's perfect for a quick lunch. It does t have as many options as some of the other Monglian BBQ places but that's OK. They have the standard and their prices are better. This is the kind of place you can come with friends and get filled up on a budget. They do offer good size takeout container sif you're in a hurry. Definitely give this place a try if you haven't yet. read more

I was on the fence about this place. I live in Seattle and grew up with Chang's. Since Changs still operates in Portland, that was my first choice, but many claimed in review that this place was nicer and better than Chang's. This place was busy, but it's also outside of the city, so competition is far less. We were seated quickly, but no instructions given. They brought out soup and disappeared. After eating out soup, we just made our bowls, assuming that was the plan. Choices were limited, the var was about half as big as other grills, thankfully, I tend to only use 3-4 ingredient's and they were all on the bar. I made two bowls, first large, second small, both the same. Food tasted pretty good, but I have to admit, I recall Chang's tasting better. If I could do it over, we would have found a Chang's location. Without a doubt, I would give this place a B, possible B+, but Chang's was always a solid A for me. Nice people and a fair price, but the total meal had room for improvement. We had to ask for rice and wraps and I would have accepted more soup assuming it was part of the buffet. read more

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the dinner is a little to high priced. 3 of us with 1 drink was 50.00 plus the tip. I think dinner should be about 3.00 less per person. Great service. This is a Mongolia food so the food is pretty much the same as the others. Good, decent selection. The staff is why you go. We hit at the wrong time. It was packed and it was about 8 people deep at the grill. But the wait was minimal. My wife was in line while I stayed with our two sons, and the waitress was there with our drinks, extra napkins, and a check in. Check ins can be far and in-between at a Mongolia grill place. Definitely glad its surviving Covid and fairly priced. Our party was 60 dollars. For 3 adults and a child. Good food, great service, and good price. I would have given 5 stars, but under the cooking top was very dirty. I knowni said it was busy but a little clean up wouldn't hurt. read more

I in love with this place. I love the food and the welcoming service that everyone in here offers. It was actually my first time here and the gentleman (I believe was the owner) was kind enough to show me step by step how the meal works (putting the meat, noodle, veggies, and the sauces together into two bowls). After I had finish my first round, I was funny enough to just about to leave the place. The gentleman noticed and came ask me if I wanted more food. He confirmed to me that it was "all you can eat." The food was undercooked and all the water the cook poured on it made the food taste like it had no flavor at all. The best thing was the 3 tiny dishes of ice cream. Gourmet it is not, but filling and satisfying? Oh yeah, this is indeed. I'm big on rating a place for what it is, not rating it against something it's not try to be so take this with a grain of salt if you must! The inside (and outside frankly) isn't very fancy or appealing. It's a a strip mall that's somewhat trashy looking and in dire need of repairs. It's a Mongolian grill so that means it's all you can eat. The freshness of the selection definitely varies - the meat is obviously frozen, but the veggies and other items seem pretty fresh. The beef could DEFINITELY be cut into small pieces because even cooked down they're pretty large. They also have pork, chicken, lamb (weird) and sometimes shrimp or some sort of fish. The vegetables vary from visit to visit but often have onions, carrots, green onions, zucchini, etc. One suggestion is to load up on the sauce. I've found when I overkill it on the sauce, it takes much much better. You lose a lot of it when they start to cook it. Service is passable, but the owner (who has been there every time I've gone) is very good at making sure things get taken care of. I've also noticed she has a TON of regulars that seem to have known her well over the span of many years - a good sign I would say. So no, it's not gourmet but it's tasty, inexpensive and a great option if you want to get filled up. read more

When we first moved up to the Portland area in 1994, there was a lovely Mongolian restaurant out in Beaverton on Hall Blvd at Cedar Hills called "Fong's Mongolian". Everything was fresh, never frozen, sauces were excellent and home-made, just, top of the game. Sadly they went out of business shortly thereafter. Not really sure why as their food was consistently the best Mongolian I'd ever eaten. Ever since, I've been trying to find a Mongolian Barbecue place that can compete--or even come close for that matter. Wife N. and I found ourselves in the neighborhood today and decided to swing through for a late lunch. Saturday, 2:30pm. We were quickly seated (there were perhaps only 10 customers in the place). I and the wife were brought the customary bowl of egg flower soup and we went through the line for our food. As is pretty typical of Mongolian places, they had an array of beef, chicken/turkey, lamb, pork, some cod and shrimp, along with ten or so veggies and an array of sauces to choose from. When I dine Mongolian, especially when it's an off-peak time, I just keep the bowls small so I can make multiple passes and try different items. Beef first, then maybe fish, then shrimp perhaps. We loaded up our bowls, got them cooked, and headed back to the table. The food was tasteless. I mean, literally--I like mine spiced up a bit, and added a fair amount of hot oil and a spoon of the dark red peppers, and still it was like "where's the flavor?" Wife had the same issue. At second pass we saw the problem: despite that I'd put a reasonable amount of oil, garlic, and other "wet stuff" in the bowls, the cook was constantly pouring water on it. Now, I've seen the cooks occasionally do this elsewhere, but this guy went through like a pint of water on each dish---so every bit of flavor was just being vaporized and sent up the vents. It's nothing that some Sriracha couldn't help (thankfully there was some at the table) but really I shouldn't have to drown a Mongolian meal in cock-sauce just to get some flavor. Egg flower soup was terribly bland. Semi-Gelatinous, and just....man, it was hard to describe, just lacked flavor. Soy sauce improved it to the point of edibility. The best thing there was the ice cream they served at the end, but it wasn't enough to redeem the dish. I had to laugh out loud--on my third pass U2's "I Still Haven't Found...What I'm Looking For" was playing. Yeah, that about sums it up. There is absolutely nothing here that stands out from the crowd of Mongolian places. Very average-to-sub-par. "Meh, I've experienced better"...Almost everywhere else. read more

We have been fans of this restaurant for years. Happy to be able to eat here again. You don't serve yourself anymore but they are generous with their portions if you ask. We kind of figure that this place is about as safe as you can get since they cook the food until it's piping hot, put it on a fresh plate and place it right in your hand. We love it! read more

I really wanted to like this place. The meat and veggie selections were good and the choice of sauces showed promise. The problem is that the sauces were so watered down that the food had no flavor. This place is sooo good. We always come here for birthdays, really ANY occasion. The owners are so warm and welcoming. They fill the room with such amazing energy. The employees love to see everyone who stop by. We have been coming here for years. We will continue to come here as our number one choice. They just opened dining back up. Our favorite thing about this place is how you get your money's worth, and then some. You get a free dessert after all that food as well. If it's just two of you or a whole family gathering, Gengis Khan is a great place to get good food exactly how you want it. Being way too stuffed when you leave is the only danger here, but I'd happily risk it every time. Yeah-yuh! Unlimited veggies, meat, noodles, and sauces - this place rocks! For the newbies: you need to get yourself 2 bowls (one for your meat and the other for the noodles and veggies). Then, you have to pack down the meat with your fist to cram as much in the bowl as possible. Load up on some oyster sauce, soy sauce, and minced garlic for some nice flavor. But if you're unsure of how much of each sauce to put there's a kind of recipe above the food bar. Seconds are required even if you know you're full. I make it my goal to leave in pain. Make sure you tip the guys grillin your food, too; they're fast and efficient, plus those sock gloves they wear don't come cheap! read more
