I came on 3/24/2022 to grab a bite for dinner, take-out. There was a large party of eight, but otherwise no line, and plenty of open seating. A large selection of pan was available. The service was friendly and the staff-person answered my questions about the different types of pupusa fillings. Pupusas: queso con loroco and queso con chicharron - I ordered one of each kind. These were freshly made, warm, and came with a generous portions of tomato-based dipping sauce and a deliciously tangy cabbage and carrot slaw. The pupusa was a round cornmeal masa cake stuffed with plenty of cheese and loroco (mild flavor) or chicharron (salty pork) - yum! Pan dulce - Slightly sweet, crumbly, almost scone-like with sesame seeds and a sweet eggy topping. Right next to the courtyard Marriott. I wandered in to check it out and decided it was good enough. nobody in the place book English so I figured it was probably legit Guatemalan food. That legitimacy really comes down to the food not being as fresh as it should be. If anything it was just marginal. Nothing that would make you sick. I enjoyed the flavor and authenticity. I had the beef steak with tomato onion thick juicy pieces of meat handmade tortillas and black beans. This place also has a wide variety of pastries on hand for sale. Next door there is a pupuseria that has a much larger customer base. I spoke with one of the women who is dining there and she told me that while the pupuseria was busy this place was more authentic. I have been coming to this place for years unfortunately the service is horrible and food is a hit or miss the prices are outrageous and there is nobody to complain about the food even if you do they don't do nothing about it!Today I went with my family and it was $54 just for some rice and chiles rellenos a side of rice and beans and a horrible chow mein that had like a few noodles and the rest was vegetables and chicken I told the guy in register and he said that's how it comes didn't offer to replace it or do something about it not to mention the food was very cold and don't think I will be going back. Wish they had good service or at least friendly employees it was just a waste of money today was worse than ever that's why I stopped coming! Revocaldo: (pork ears, tongue, cheek, liver curried stew). pretty hard core eats but a must try for the more adventurous eaters. fried plantains: served with a sour cream sauce and Guatemalan style refried black beans! it is so good! eat this! Caldo de Rez (beef soup) sooo nice and...beefy! bone marrow broth is made with lots of time and love! meat is very tender! perfect winter time meal guisado de rez:(beef stew) beef so tender you dont need a knife (or teeth for that matter) to eat! pollo en crema (chicken in creme sauce) very tasty and creamy! a little salty which i like chile rellenos: version is stuffed with meat and cheese. good but not the best thing on the menu lenguas pan: large oblong crispy sweet bread! perfect with coffee! the place is pretty bare bones but the food is authentic and top notch! my sister in law is from Guatemala and she loved it! it is in same block as the Courtyard and TowneSuites Marriot so if you are staying here highly recommend stopping by! read more

I have been here to purchase their sweet bread, which is fantastic. I love the taste especially with coffee But today I decided to have brunch here. Unfortunately, their table service is lacking. I ordered their chile relleno plate. Overall it was decent. The stuffed peppers were a little salty and lacked flavor. My auntie ordered breakfast which consisted of scrambled eggs with onion and tomatoes, refried black beans and fresh white cheese. We had coffee and sweet bread before our food. Overall like I said previously their bread is very good! In all honesty come on by purchase their bread which is amazing and pass on their food. I am not Guatemalan so here is my non biased review. Ive only had their chicken tamales and their bread. The tamales are not far from perfect. They lack a bit of spices typically found in Guatemalan recipes but not much, however, the chicken inside is just right. These are restaurant quality with overall good taste and lots of chicken inside. You get full with just one tamal and its frances to go along with it. I have these tamales once a month on weekends with a cup of coffee. My kids enjoy them too... in fact, my daughter who is 7 enjoys then so much she finishes one all by herself....trust me...its a lot of food but they are so good she finishes them. Their bread is...well....bread. Its not bad but just average....bread doesn't need much so if you like Guatemalan bread this is your place. A side note: I am certified by the state of california to handle food and this comment is for the person who said they got food poisoned...is this the cleanest place? no. Is this place totally violating food handling laws? no.... hey...most latino restaurants violate some rules but I dont think it goes so bad to where you will know you got poisoned from this place...trust me, I would not expose my kids if I knew this place was violating basic health laws. Conclusion: This is money well spent here. Food is great. People are great...they take phone orders. If you are Guatemalan and looking to change from your favorite restaurant give this a try. I would give this place 5 stars because the food is really good. My only complaint is that every time I've been here they bring our food out, one item at a time. It would be nice if all of us (it was two of us today) received our food at the same time. One of the pastries we bought gave my partner food poisoning :/ we came in and bought three pastries - 2 of the more plain ones for 50 cents each which are a quarter at other bakeries but whatever and one flaky pastry with jelly in the middle for $1. However , we kept driving past Channys because its located right next to the Salvadorian restaurant next door. It looks as if its one restaurant ! Lol So try not to get confused! I would recommend a bigger sign or something to distinguish the two restaurants . Now, the tamales are amazing !
