We got crispy spring rolls, crab Rangoon, and cucumber salad. The spring rolls and crab Rangoon were perfect and everything you'd want from those 2 menu items! The cucumber salad was refreshing and light. It tasted different from your standard Chinese cucumber salad (no chili oil, but rather a vinegar based liquid?) The Spicy Kee Mao Noodles with Tofu wasn't spicy at all but had big chunks of noodles, tofu, and bell peppers and was delicious. The Pad Thai from here always hits and was fresh! Came here after a friend recommended it to me. I'm surprised I haven't heard of this place and it's not easily findable on Google Maps or Yelp, but I'm glad I came to try it out. Came on a weekend dinner and was able to get a table without a reservation which is nice. I decided to be more adventurous and get the Khao Soi, I would usually order the Pad Thai or curries otherwise, and I'm glad I did because it was delicious. I appreciate how many different ingredients there were in the dish from the pickled greens to the crispy egg noodles. The curry was extremely rich and went well with all the ingredients. I do have to say that the chicken didn't have a lot of flavor and seemed barely cooked, so I had to eat it with the pickled mustard greens for the flavors to come through. Overall, huge quantity and tasty meal! Would definitely come back, although I still stand firm that the best Thai food in St. Louis is Thai Country Cafe on the Loop. However, I did not have a great dining experience here. We placed our order and paid through a Toast QR code at our table. We waited for almost an hour for our food, and the server barely came to check on us. From my Thai cuisine experience, I wasn't impressed with the quality of the dishes here. The beef Nam Tok was kinda chewy and lacking of flavor. Gai Tod (wings) were dry and tasted old. The rest of my order was just alright. The only item I liked was the coconut ice cream. Fantastic little Thai place in the grove. The ambiance is quite solid for a date night. The food was very good especially at the price point. I've had Thai that's double the price and not as intricate or tasty. We shared the Massaman Curry, Khao Soi and Thai fried rice. Honestly all three were great, just depends on the mood you are in. Absolutely loved the sweet sausage with the Thai fried rice I'd recommend adding it. I think my fave was probably the Khao Soi though. Found another gem in St. Louis! The decor is modern and the food is delicious Thai fusion. Appetizer was coconut flakes, lime and bits of crunchy goodness on a ahúso leaf topped with a slightly seeet tamarind sauce. Noodles -- fried and egg noodles give this dish a great texture. The curry sauce was delicious and the shrimp was perfectly cooked. Beef-- thinly sliced beef with lime and chili , very refreshing . Inside is very modern and clean. Wait staff is very friendly . If I could only rate more than 5 stars! Walked past this restaurant on my way from a coffee shop and I knew I had to walk in. I waited all afternoon until they opened, best decision. First of all the service and staff were kind hearted and spectacular. Secondly, I received devastating news while arriving- however their food and their music was perfect for the ambiance, I couldn't help but keep smiling. I came by myself and I ate up every single scrap in my plate. I ordered the Beef Nam Tok (Spicy- it wasn't that spicy, it was perfect level) and IT WAS PHENOMENAL! The flavor was impeccable! I just ordered Massaman Curry (Medium spice). Received that with rice. The curry was more watery than expected. I was disappointed in this meal. It was filling, but the protein and potatoes were bland. It doesn't seem like the items were marinated in the curry. The most flavor came from the peanuts, believe it or not. My sister and I had an early dinner here on a Friday night. There's a parking lot across the street and if you arrive before 8pm there's plenty of free parking still available. There are a few outside benches, but between the STL humidity and the impending rain, we decided to dine inside. The interior was bright and spacious (very good feng shui) with an open air aesthetic. I loved the feel and energy of the place. Our server, as well as every other employee we encountered, was very pleasant and helpful. But on to the food... KEE MAO - Spicy noodles ordered with tofu well done and Chinese broccoli (sans tomatoes) at spice level hot. The flavor was excellent! However, there was zero spice in this dish. Before ordering I asked our server about the spice levels and he said that "hot" was their highest level. I inquired about any Thai hot options. He said they did not offer them, but indicated that their "hot" was comparable to Thai hot 1. (It most certainly was not.) If you know me, you know I take my spice seriously and I most certainly judge ethnic restaurants when they don't deliver. Nonetheless, this was a deliciously flavorful vegan-friendly option and I would order it again. Excellent portion; enough for a full meal the next day. PANANG CURRY - ordered hot with tofu well done. Again, not spicy but it excelled in flavor execution. I also felt that there wasn't enough curry for the price. I may omit the tofu next time to test how much curry we're really getting with this dish. As far as vegan options, I spoke with someone before I came and was told that all of the curries and the Kee Mao are all vegan when ordered with tofu or veggies. I inquired about the Thai Fried Rice because that's one of my favs, but was informed that it is made with fish sauce and shrimp paste. He told me that while you may definitely omit these things, it will leave the dish flavorless/bland. No one wants that. I appreciate his honesty. I was focused on the aforementioned items so I did not find out what other dishes were/were not vegan-friendly. I'll delve further into that next time. I would definitely return here, but I challenge Chao Baan to expand both their vegan and spice level options. read more

Fresh, complex Thai cuisine, but a confusing dining experience. Environment: The restaurant feels open with high ceilings, well spaced out tables, and a variety of high tops, standard tables, and booths. The wood-themed ambiance feels elevated and consistent with that of other Thai restaurants around. Unfortunately, the praise in this regard stops there. They've implemented a VERY CONFUSING new ordering system such that everything is done through a web-app. You browse the menu, order, and pay through the app... the servers are only there to bring the food to our table seemingly. Even though we paid for our meal early, the kitchen seemingly never got our order and we waited unnecessarily for our meal, even though the restaurant was clearly not busy. We had to flag down a server to fix the situation... no one came to check on us or inquire why we were waiting for no reason. Once we got our food, no one came to check on us, give us more water, etc. until we had finished and it was time to pay the bill (which we already did earlier). It's confusing why a wait staff exists here when you can do everything through their website. This "convenience feature" ruins the dining experience... 2/5, just barely, Food/Drink: We tried the Spicy Kee Mao Noodles and the Pad See Ew. To be honest, the taste doesn't feel the most authentic, but they develop the flavors of the dishes very well with fresh ingredients and fresh spices. The Kee Mao Noodles especially had a layers of complexity with the addition of the white wine and the vegetables were still very crispy. Both dishes are on the sweeter side, but getting the 'Hot' spice option provided a good balance that made us want to keep eating. The chicken is average, on par with that from other Thai restaurants. Definitely left you craving more, but we wonder if this craving is because the authentic umami of these noodle dishes were lacking. Would still recommend giving both dishes a try, as they're good in their own way... 4/5. The price point is a bit steep, but it can be justified by their quality food. We've tried their cocktails here in the past, and some are very good and some are mediocre. Unfortunately, we don't remember which ones were which, sorry! Rating: 3/5, the food is good but missing the spark of authenticity in our opinion. The service ruins this experience completely. Honestly would recommend carrying out from this restaurant instead of dining in because the food is still tasty and worth a try... just not our favorite Thai spot in town. read more

Holy flavor explosion Batman. Get the green shiso leaf wraps. This app will take you on a trip - sweet, sour, savory, spicy all in one bite. I'm no Thai food connoisseur, but it is such a delicious and special dish to start your meal off with. I've been able to try chao baan's more unique dishes over time, and I think that they do an awesome job at them. Their noodle dishes, pad Thai, and all of their curry dishes are also consistently good. Need to know: beware, their spice level is what I like to call Asian spicy accurate. The Tito's Tokay Boomer is a light and refreshing cocktail. My favorite dish is the Khao Tod Nam Sod which has great flavor. I got the panang curry and while the curry had a good unique flavor and was seasoned well, the chicken tasted like it had been sitting out a while and the meal didn't taste fresh. The servers came by here and there but it took us between 45-60 min to get our food and it didn't even seem particularly busy. The ambiance was very nice however. We love Chao Baan! We first dined in a year ago and have been supporting them with take out since COVID started. The service was great, and the staff was knowledgeable about the menu and made great recommendations. Our favorites are: Mieng Kham or bowl of Tom Yum for an appetizer and we split 2 of these: pad see ew, gaeng kiew, beef nam tok. Take out is really easy right now. We were craving Thai and we've been really into the Grove food scene lately so this was an obvious choice. So glad we went with it! My boyfriend says "5 STARS!" it's the bomb. Best Thai we've had in the area. We thought the prices were fair for what you got, and one entree has enough food for at least 3 meals. Super flavorful and so delicious. I had been wanting to try this place for a while now and every time my friends and I would go out I'd forget to mention it. Not this time. We went out on a Wednesday and struggled with ordering (you order through an app.... everything. It's Saturday night and I-‐ had a crazy busy day and wanted to go out. So we went out. I had the Pad See Ew (while I normally try something new this was just that good) and of COURSE the Meing Kham which again was amazing. We also had spring rolls (nothing spectacular) and Panang Curry. My friend said that was really tasty. Here is my problem... first the spring rolls came out. No problem. Then my main course showed up. The server apologized and said he'd bring our food out randomly as soon as it was finished. However after 15 minutes I was sharing my food because my friend's food still hadn't shown up. THAT is a problem. To make matters worse my friend's curry came so we were still waiting for the appetizer. I decided to stop eating again, this time to not fill up on my main entrée because I wasn't sure how well the Meing Kham would travel. This was not the servers fault.
