This location is consistent with service and customer service. I made an appointment for my annual safety inspection and waited a few hours. When my car was finished they brought it around for me as it was cold out and the car was parked in an adjacent parking lot. I always feel comfortable at this location with service. read more

I've used this location of Chapel Hill Tire on multiple occassions. Most recently for lube service and requested a quote on a spark plug job on my Toyota. The good - the service writers are fairly friendly. The bad - pricing appears to be above market rates. The dealer wanted $700 for spark plug change - Chapel Hill Tire was $808 - I ended up getting the job done for $480+ tax up the road at another shop. They do not give you an invoice or paper receipt - so you can't look over the work performed at the time of pick up - they are "paperless" which is in my opinion bad business and bad for the consumer. Shifting the cost of a piece of paper on the customer is tacky, cheap, and unprofessional. They will email it to you. I also got a quote for tire installation - they charge $100 more if you provide the tires from a competitor or from Tire Rack. $118 if you purchase their tires; Over $200 if you use Tire Rack tires or provide your own $55/ wheel/tire. Based on all of this experience - I can't endorse Chapel Hill tire at this time. UPDATED REVIEW: 11/24/25 I had to return to Chapel Hill Tire on Franklin St because Discount Tire attempted to put new tires on my Tacoma on Friday. They were able to do 3 of the wheels and the 4th, a front right wheel would not come off because one of the lugnuts was driven on so tight, it broke their tools. Chapel Hill Tire was the last shop to rotate my wheels and tires - which is done on each oil change at 5,000 mile intervals beacause AT tires require this level of attention. This was performed in April 2025. I did not rotate the tires and wheels in September because I was replacing the tires. Unfortunately, now I am being charged $261.00 by Chapel Hill Tire to "fix" or remove the busted / stuck lugnut. This was completely avoidable had their technician in April not driven the lugnut on so tight. I really don't like impact wrenches but most shops use them because it saves time and cuts down their bottom line costs. I was also informed, to remove this lugnut "minimal scratching" will occur to the wheel - which is not great. If the scratching is at all visible on the wheel I will have to refinish the wheel or replace it or have it repaired. $261 - Today's repair $20 - 2 Lyft rides to and from And my time to schedule this and 2 appointments instead of 1 to get my new tires installed. I will not return to Chapel Hill Tire on Franklin St and I can't endorse them any longer for any work. -CT UPDATE post pickup of my truck: Not only did Chapel Hill Tire charge me $261.00 for a problem they created - they didn't install the TPSM sensor in the wheel and they did not notify me when they called with the estimate they were having any problems whatsoever. I did not realize this until I got home - they don't print you an invoice - because saving .03 on printing an invoice is how CHT operates. When I arrived home I found the TPMS sensor in my cupholder. Now I can return to Discount Tire - to have them FIX a 2nd problem created by Chapel Hill Tire. They can look forward to a credit card dispute at this point for the full amount of $261.00. read more

I was very unhappy with my visit to Chapel Hill Tire. I came in for a oil change and inspection, but the experience turned into a nightmare. I feel like the employees are really nice and tried to be accommodating but a few things stuck out to me. They definitely tried to pressure me into getting more things than I wanted but overall were nice and kind, my experience with the managers was a completely different story. My car was broken into because someone did not close my door correctly/unlocked. I talked to the manager and I sent a document listing everything that was stolen, instead when we got on call, we agreed on a price for one of the items, the manager then took that as payment for the entire thing, once I was appalled with the amount given to me, the new manager said we didnt have a documented amount, even though I literally sent them a document with everything listed. Essentially, the manager fooled me into thinking he would actually pay the full amount but really only gave me half of what I was owed. I have never felt so shocked by the lack of effort by a company. I paid $1400 dollars for my service, even with the amount stolen, they still would have profited. I have lost my faith in corporate humanity, please dont be fooled like me. Edit: To Marc, the only reason you guys spent significant time contacting me is because you ghosted me for months and then proceeded to give vague claims about when the check would come. I had an amazing experience at Chapel Hill Tire. I am a freshmen taking summer classes, I use my electric scooter to go everywhere. Tuesday, my electric scooter broke, the tube inside the rubber tire popped. With no family or adults I could go to for help, I tried calling every bike shop, car shop, and anywhere else I could think of that could help me. All of them turned me away, claiming they do not touch scooters and wouldn't even look at it. As a last ditch effort I dragged my scooter to Chapel Hill Tire and asked for help. Brandon immediately took me to the garage and helped fix my scooter. The whole staff was incredibly kind to me and did everything they could to help. After 45 minutes, Brandon had the tire fixed and my scooter put back together. Went in for full brake pad and rotor replacement for 2018 VW Tiguan. $1200 and They had service done by end of day, but upon leaving my brakes screeched when braking. After 2 times back, they could not fix the problem. 1 year later and my brakes still screech every time I brake. First, the good news: they were timely. Now, the bad news: I took my car in to get an oil change, and they gave it a complimentary "overall checkup". On that checkup they said that, among other things, the rear breaks were fine. Took it back three days later for an unrelated issue (I meant to have them take care of both issues on the same day, but I ran out of time). On the second visit, three days after their complimentary report told me my brakes were fine, they took it for a test drive and found out that the rear break pads were LESS than 1mm. NOT GOOD. What else did they miss in their "complimentary checkup"? For them to give a misleading report on such a serious part of the car is completely unacceptable. I will not be taking my car back to them. All I wanted was my tire fixed or replaced. I waited a surprisingly long time for this~well over an hour. When I got my car back, I was handed a sheet with a listing of all the things wrong with my car. I just had it serviced at my mechanic and he said it was great. Yes, it's 18 years old. Yes, things are not new but still in great shape... I got a quote of over $3,000..The worst part is that they want to charge $84.99 to check the engine light which you can get FREE at Auto Zone. What a psychological scam this is..someone a little more naive about older cars could be freaked out by this and get everything repaired..I'm old enough to know better and have driven old cars for years and I know the innards get tired but not dead or near dead. The most insidious part is that everyone is so incredibly warm, engaging and very polite. Not sure why they do this~~they are most certainly NOT hurting for biz. Shame on them.. My advice to anyone is if you need something minor, DEMAND that you DO NOT WANT AN ASSESSMENT. A crappy way to drum up biz. read more

I took my wife's RX350 in to have a slowly leaking tire repaired. They charged $25 for the repair, which seems kind of high, but not a big deal. They also provided an inspection report - which is the reason for my one star review. Their report stated that all four tires needed urgent attention. They said the treads were cupped and wear was 1/32" from the wear bars. Near term recommendations were that the battery is failing, the required replacement 5,000 miles ago, brake fluid should have been replaced and fuel system required service. All told, Chapel Hill Tire recommended that I pay them almost $1,900. That was five days ago. Today we took the car into the dealership for regular service. The tires will be replaced and aligned within 5,000 miles, but the tread is not cupped. The battery tested just fine. Brake fluid was replaced less than a year ago and isn't due for another 15,000 miles. Lexus doesn't recommend coolant replacement for another 25,000 miles. And, the dealership checked the throttle body, verified that there is no carbon build up - no service / cleaning recommended. These folks seem to stay busy - it's a shame they seem to make make recommendations for unnecessary work. Sounds like people felt that they had been treated nicely here, perhaps while they were being gouged. read more

(Update/disclaimer): They recently called me and gave me a full refund for my last oil change because of my experiences described below. That being said, I've added two stars to my review. Though I have had positive experiences with other CHT locations in the past, I had several things happen at this location recently that have made me never want to come here again. 1. I make an appointment on Friday to get my oil changed, fluids checked, and new tires. No tires in stock, so they have to order them and tell me to come back Monday. All fine. 2. I come back Monday when they open, they take my car. They tell me it'll be done in a few hours. A few hours pass, no word. I have to call them, and they tell me oh, it's been ready. I can come pick it up. Nobody bothered to let me know. So I have to rush and pick it up at an inconvenient time so I can get to work when I should have been able to pick it up earlier that morning 3. I get there and am paying, and they let me know that they forgot to change my oil. So now I have to take more time out of my busy week and come back later. They apologize and imply the oil change will be free of charge 4. I come in for the third time in a week and drop t off. They charge me for the oil change. 5. I come home a week later to notice a bunch of fluid leaking out from under my hood. I take it to another shop (by now I am very sick of CHT), and they tell me that whoever changed the oil last (CHT) did not tighten my oil cap enough so it rattled loose, fell off, and now my entire engine compartment is covered in oil. They tell me to come back to CHT and ask them to fix it. 6. So here I am, for the 4th time in 2 weeks, at CHT. They forgot to let me know my car was ready, then forgot to change my oil, then misleadingly implied I would get my next oil change free, then committed an error which could have caused me serious engine trouble when they did finally change my oil. I've only been here for emissions tests, but the service has been prompt both times. I totally procrastinated this year, and my registration was due today. I called this morning and got an appointment for just about an hour later. I had a hair appointment just around the corner at To the Woods (a short three minute walk away), and my car was ready to go by the time I was done. The people who work there are friendly and they even replaced the dead battery in my key fob at no extra charge. I'll be back when I'm due for an oil change. What I like about this location is that it's central to downtown. Instead of sitting around waiting in the office, you can walk to downtown Carrboro a few blocks away for lunch or coffee or to any of the restaurants just a few feet away in downtown Chapel Hill. Al's Burger Shack is on the same block. Last year when I went for an emissions test it was nice out, so I walked to Jessee's (or is it Cafe Carrboro now??) for a coffee and they were done with my vehicle before I was done with my coffee! After waiting a few hours at chapel hill tire, they told me that my battery was fine and that I would have to come back another day and leave the vehicle so they could work on the electrical components. My husband and I have been taking our car here for a while, and after today we won't be back. We've had a couple oil changes, and paid for an inspection when we bought a new (to us) car. I would not recommend them to anyone, and I don't trust them one bit. Last Monday, my husband brought the car in for an oil change. He received a call saying that some additional work needed to be done. We were aware that this work would need to be done soon, so we went ahead and took care of it. $1700 later, he picked up the car. When he got home, I wanted to take it for a test drive. As soon as I walked outside, I noticed a burning plastic type of smell. He said it could be several things, so we waited to see if it would stop. It didn't, so he decided to take it in today to have them take a look. Apparently it's a leaky seal where the oil cooler hooks up. Of course, it's only a coincidence that we developed a leaky seal THE SAME DAY we took the car in for work. There is no possible way it could be anything they've done. I've been to Chapel Hill Tire twice before, once at this location and the second at the US 15-501 location. The first time I was at Franklin St., and have received nothing but excellent customer service from these guys. They're truly top notch when it comes to caring about the customer. There was a slight mishap the first time I went to the Franklin St. location where the issue I brought my car in for was not addressed (I suspected it was a bad starter) and instead of fixing that problem, they suggested other repairs that I paid for and ultimately didn't fix the issue. I think they just didn't diagnose it correctly, happens to the best of shops every once in a while. Two months later, I took my car to the US 15-501 location for the same issue and the diagnostic came back as an expensive starter replacement, the same repair I had suspected two months back. I explained my disappointment to management at this location for basically having paid for a repair two months earlier that didn't solve the problem that would now cost me the full price of repair, when it could've easily been taken care of the first time around. Long story short, they heard me out and handled the situation beautifully. They offered to reimburse me for my previous repair and apply it toward my current cost of fixing the starter, so it was like the previous repair had never happened. They took care of communicating between their 2 locations for me and within an hour, my situation was resolved and I was fully satisfied. I was expecting a huge argument and a lot of resistance/hassle, because that's usually what happens at shops. You have to advocate for yourself pretty sternly to make sure you don't get screwed over with unnecessary repairs and extra costs. But not with these guys! They really go the extra mile to make sure the customer is satisfied and are more than willing to hear out your situation and make sure you don't come out of their shop feeling like you got played. I have had a previous bad interaction with Chapel Hill Tire when I commissioned them to replace fan belts on a late 80's Dodge Colt wagon - they changed the belts alright, but in the process stripped the threads to hold the crankshaft pulley tight. We ultimately had to trade the car - great job guys. Knowing this, I figured I could at least trust them to fix a flat tire after I caught a bear claw on the outer tread after 20K use. They told me the tire couldn't be fixed because of the position of the prospective repair and that I would have to purchase a new tire. I was able to have the tire repaired elsewhere without problems. These guys are professional rip-off artists - even for the most simple of jobs, they're always looking to find a way to up-charge, despite having incompetent mechanics. Avoid at all costs. read more

Chapel Hill Tire is alright, but can sometimes be a pain in the butt. Pros: Most of the mechanics are really nice and helpful, they have coupons that they put on their website, as well as special email coupons and additional discounts for UNC students, plus free tire rotation. The prices are pretty reasonable and they have convenient locations in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Cons: Some of the mechanics can be a bit less than friendly. They are very, very busy too -- now that they are pushing appointments, its pretty much impossible to get your car looked at quickly. I had a leaky tire and I just wanted to put the spare on, which I can totally do myself. When I went to take the tire off though, the bolts had been put on so tight after my last rotation that no one (not me, not my husband, not a friend) could get the tire off. All I wanted was to stop by and have them take the tire off. Should be easy, right? I called to check and was told that 1) I had to leave my car, and 2) no one would get to it for at least 4 days. Since I sort of needed my car, I ended up just putting air into it twice a day until I could get an appointment. Very frustrating. They will also try to push not-entirely-necessary services on you, so take their recommendations with a grain of salt! Will I keep taking my car there? Probably, but I'm pretty lazy. They're a decent place, but they could definitely do better. read more

Only drove maybe $1000 miles between the dealer checkup and these guys. They feed you the good old boy Southern hospitality bit, while sticking a knife in your back. My appointment was 7:30am on a Monday morning, I arrived at 7:20am and they opened the door for me and took my car early without me even asking. He stated that both my front and rear brakes needed to replaced, as well as the front and rear rotors. Trust. Nothing in the business world is more important. A salesman at this company told me, point blank, they had previously been on the telephone with Michelin tire company representatives, who told them that 4 car types were tearing thru the tread on Michelin tires, more so than other makes of cars. Our Sienna was one, he said. Later, I called the manager to get the name at Michelin of the person who said that so I could get a full discount for my 3 of 4 tires (the 90,000 mile Defender) which were failing after 40,000 miles, all 4 bought at Cox Toyota in Burlington NC, about 2 years ago. Driven by a soccer mom, rotated regularly by the dealer, we expected to get much better life from the tire. With the recounting of the excessive wear accusation by Chapel Hill Tire salesman, I thought I had a perfect way to get a full refund, and not the expected approximate 50% prorated purchase of new Michelins. Sadly, the manager at the store told me they spoke with Micheline and 55% off was the highest they would go. I'd have to call them myself. I recounted what the salesman said, but the manager said He had not spoken to Michelin about this excessive wear... it must have been American Tire Distributor's (Raliegh, NC) representative. I should call them for support. I Spoke with Ilson in Burlington at one of American Tire's warehouses, but he said although they sold to both Cox Toyota and Chapel Hill Tire, they did not tell them there was excessive wear on these specific cars. So, it was time to call Michelin. Spoke with Daniele who listened to what you've read and called Chapel Hill Tire and spoke, luckily, to the exact salesman who started this... He told her he had NOT told me anything about their shop speaking to Michelin on the phone about excessive wear on Siennas... ...Basically refuting what I'd heard the day before, from his mouth, standing in front of him at his tire store. I asked the Michelin lady for a supervisor. I told him the story and emphasized my chagrin at having the Tire Store's salesman call me a liar, when speaking with Danielle. The Michelin Supervisor, Julian, offered 10% more. I was expecting this because the Chapel Hill Tire Store manager, who had already told me he'd arranged for Michelin to pro-rate the tires 55% said, sometimes, if customers ask, directly, they will give 10% extra, which would make 65%. I emphasized my lack of humor at this point and was able to get him to extend a 75% discount on any new tires. My disappointment in this store was with being lied to by the salesperson, Wayne. Then having the Manager, Chris, tell me that what was actually recounted by Wayne to Michelin's Danielle was that in their Shop, as an anecdotal observation, THEY had noticed Toyota Camary's wore out Michelin tires faster than other models. Nothing about Sienna or the other 4 makes I was told about, just 24 hours earlier. I have very little faith in the tire sales industry in general after this episode, but more loss of faith specifically with this company. My direct hint to the manager was that I felt lied to and would be partly mollified if they installed these tires as a significantly reduced amount, in order to placate me and to insure my wife became a new long term customer.
