This is a warning. Don't take your care here. I had a slow leak in the front tire of my 2015 Prius. I dropped the car off and they said it would be ready before lunch. I received a phone call from them at lunch time and they told me the tire could not be repaired. They also told me that my other three tires were down to 2/32" of tread (2/32" of tread is the minimum to pass NC safety inspection). I was surprised by this since the tires weren't that old. He convinced me they were no good so I told him to proceed. He also wanted to do a four wheel alignment. I told him to proceed. When I got to the store to pick up my car, I asked to see my old tires. First I asked to see where the sidewall damage was that kept them from repairing the original tire. They couldn't show me where the damage was. I left that alone and looked at the other three tires. There was nothing wrong with them. They had over 5/32" of tread left. I got mad. When I asked for the printout on the alignment, they told me they couldn't show me that because the alignment printer was "broken". I got even madder. I should have made them remove the new tires and put my old ones back on. The representative told me he wasn't going to charge me for the alignment and was going to give me the tires at "his cost", which was $100 each. I just wanted to get away from them so I paid it and left. As I drove away, I realized that my steering wheel was not straight. This is something that is adjusted during an alignment. I immediately took my car to a trusted mechanic who checked the alignment and said it was out of alignment. I had him redo the alignment. read more

Was referred here a couple months ago by my regular mechanic who was too booked up to fix a sudden flat. I was due for tires anyway and figured I'd just buy a set while here. Well, they only had three of the ones I wanted. So they sold me one of another brand, their go to just to get people moving to get to work, etc. Okay, I'll just order them another time. Plus they confirmed the flickering low tire light on my instrument panel that my mechanic told me was the tire sensor was going bad. Returned today to buy three of that same brand as the single one they sold me a couple months ago because it has a pretty good mileage warranty afterall. Plus needed alignment, got the tire sensor replaced, and the oil changed, all for a very good price. As others have said, the staff is so nice from those behind the front desk to the older gentleman who did the tire install, etc. The car drives so nice now and I feel confident as we'll be heading into fall and winter and who knows what weather we'll have. read more

Colonial Tire was recommended to me by an employee at Auto Zone, across the street, after my car battery died one cold winter morning. The concern at Auto Zone was that my alternator might be on the fitz and not just my battery. The employee called over to Colonial and they said bring it over and they'd check it, no wait. The good news is that my alternator was fine, but I did need a new battery, something that is easily installed but just needs to be paid for. They gave me a quote but fortunately I'd already received a quote from Auto Zone for about $5 cheaper. They matched that price and actually saved me a couple more dollars, no charge for installation or the alternator check. I can't recommend calling around to price check any type of car issues you're having, I've never been to a mechanic that won't match a competitors prices. They entire process took about 1-1.5 hours and I was able to get comfortable on a couch in the waiting room and use their free wifi to get some work done. They also have coffee in the waiting room, nothing fancy, but gets the job done. I'll keep Colonial in mind next time I have car issues, they offer no fuss service and keep their customers satisfied. read more

This is THE PLACE to buy your 20oz Coke products!!!! $1 for a 20oz from the vending machine...you're not going to find that ANYWHERE. Good show ol boys! Okay so moving on...I come here because the staff is actually friendly and easy to deal with and from what I can tell they do good quality work at a reasonable price and they don't waste your time. I have now had a presale inspection (~$50 and 30 minutes) and a full synthetic oil change and tire rotation ($85 and like 30-40 minutes). There is a coupon online that takes $15 off which will knock the price down to $70 which isn't bad in my opinion. They keep a clean lobby, the employees seems to get along well and have created a comfortable environment that makes you feel like you get what you pay for. Ever been to Sport Durst to get your oil changed? Try $100 and a 2-3 HOUR wait for an oil change done by people who don't seem to care about you, your time, and probably your car. Can't say if this is the best price in town, I haven't really shopped around that much but for the most part I think you will leave here feeling good about how you spent your money. I am curious if there is a better price in town or if they will met me use the $15 off every time I come in. If they do they probably have a long-time customer in myself. Generally I would recommend this spot. There is a reason they stay busy even though their next door and across the parking lot neighbors are both automotive shops. No joke, there are three automotive shops within a 50-60 yard radius of each other...so don't get confused when you pull into the shopping center. I have a 1969 AMC javelin with a race suspension (4 link in the back). I was unable to get a good alignment on it previously. Colonial Tire (specifically Lucas) pulled it off! Updating my previous review. Well.. I don't know if this place is under new ownership, or what... but went in for my inspection and was told it failed because of 2 front tires. Confused, I asked them to show me. Went out back to be told "well ok it does pass, but...." That was alarming. If I had not gone back to check would they have failed me?!!!!!!! Then requested a quote for 4 new tires, reached out to Mr Tire at the same time. The two quotes came back FOR THE EXACT SAME TIRES. Colonnial $480 plus tax Mr Tire $240 plus tax So yeah - I will never ever go back, and would advise anyone who does not wish to pay double the cost for everything to avoid the place too. Such a shame to think you've found a place you can trust, only for have them try TWICE to completely rip you off. read more

Each person on the staff at Colonial Tire and Automotive was very helpful and willing to make sure I had the best service possible for my car. I drive a European car and the parts and maintenance are extremely expensive. Chris and his staff were able to help me make the most efficient selections of what needed to be done. My car had a flat and I had been driving on a spare for quite some time. They installed and balanced my tires FOR FREE until I was able to get a diagnosis on the car from ANOTHER dealer. That is by far the best customer service I have ever received from a car shop. Afterwards, they aligned my car and also changed my oil, with the next oil change on them. It takes a while to find an auto shop you can trust and feel like they do a good job. I've definitely found that in Colonial Tire and I can say that based upon my regular interactions with everyone from the mechanics to the owner. Latest Visit on 4/15/13: oil change and new tire (my latest blow out from grazing a manhole that jutted too high out of the ground and too close to the side of the road) *2/18/13: oil change, car inspection, and transmission serviced *11/20/12: regular oil change *8/03/12: 2 new tires (low tread) *3/16/12: new tire (mystery gouge in tire) Yes, you read that right. I've replaced all four tires on my car in about a year's time. My car is only 3 years old too. You could say that, with my luck, I keep Colonial Tire in business in terms of ordering tires....I have THE worst luck with tires.... On all occasions, the guys over there have given me a ride to work too since my office is less than 2 miles away They're really fast, very friendly, helpful in advising you on the best products or prices appropriate for your car and situation, and nice. I've since sent my coworker and her husband over there when they were dealing with a recurring issue that their regular mechanic was unable to resolve. My Mom was passing through town and needed help with a little something. The guys at Colonial Tire were able to help her out too. I highly recommend them to anyone! read more

Came in for a tire rotation and wheel alignment. Price seemed high for this particular job since I've had this job done else where for much cheaper. The reason for the bad review is about what they tried to get from me while waiting for my car. The front desk lady came out from the back and was trying to sell me by starting off that my breaks were well below where it needs to be and its now creating grooves within my rotors. As was asking her what they charge I said to her, "that is odd that they are so low because I haven't felt it being soft on the breaks or any sounds when breaking". Her response, "well it is a hybrid and that's why you aren't hearing the breaking. They are softer on the breaks". My response, "no I've heard my breaks in the past when I needed them changed. Being a hybrid as nothing to do with the breaks" Her response....."well ummmm" At that point just told her to do what I came in for and I'll deal with my hybrid breaks later. I drive a 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid. But if you want a good laugh you can come here. I don't hear my breaks because I drive a hybrid. Never heard that one before. read more

Car stuff stresses me out. While I wish I'd learned more about automotive issues (and I suppose it's never too late to learn), I didn't. Therefore, when something goes wrong with my car, I have no choice but to blindly trust wherever I take it. Anyway, I was having some issues with my brake light coming on when I made left turns. I'd had it looked at before and knew that I probably just needed a little brake fluid, but with a baby on the way I figured I shouldn't take any chances. I dropped my car off on Saturday morning and they called me back a couple of hours later to tell me that in fact it was just some low fluid and I could pick up my car. The charge? Zero dollars. Fixed nail in tire fast. We were on road trip. Happiest customers ever. Got us squeezed in ahead of others and charged next to nothing.

Did a google search to find an auto shop that would help me figure out why my 4 wheel drive wouldn't engage, and this is what popped up first. They took a look and figured out the problem (damaged rear differential). Didn't charge me a cent, even though I was expecting to pay a diagnostic fee. Brought my car back later to fix a different problem (installing a new sway bar) and I had another unbelievable experience. They got me in and out in under an hour and charged me 50 bucks less than they had originally quoted me. WHAT MECHANIC ACTUALLY TAKES CARE OF THEIR CUSTOMERS AND HELPS THEM FIND THE MOST AFFORDABLE SOLUTION?? This one. A rare gem. I would give them 0 stars, but Yelp forces at least one, which in my opinion is way too high. My car was stolen, so I called the shop to determine what steps I needed to take to get money back for my vehicle. They told me that they wouldn't do anything. They weren't under any obligation to reimburse me for my property because I had taken too long to make a decision on the work that they said we needed to get done. The reason I was taking so long is because they told me that my car needed a new engine, and I was trying to find another shop to get a second opinion after my vacation. The most interesting part was that I had my vehicle looked at not long before that and the other shop didn't mention the engine at all. Needless to say this organization has lost a customer for life, and if you plan on taking your car there, you should beware. read more

In summary, I don't know if they assumed a guy in business attire didn't know (and worked on) his cars, or if the mechanic falsified his report to drive up revenue, or if Ron was trying to cover for him or really doesn't know much about ball joints. Regardless, I do not plan on coming back. I gave it two stars because they are relatively friendly, and were quicker than other shops have been in the past to get my car in and get started (even with an appointment). The full story is below. I stopped in earlier this week for a vehicle inspection. Ron (who I think is a service manager) came out to me to tell me of two issues they found. The following conversation is near verbatim. Ron tells me "Your lower right front ball joint is really bad, it's about to come apart. It's dangerous to drive on. We can fix that for you." "My lower ball joint?" "Yes, lower right front, it can be very dangerous." "Weird. I just replaced all the control arms on both sides 6 months ago, and they came with new ball joints. I'll contact the manufacturer to get replacements." slight pause "Oh, uh, well, this is really dangerous, you shouldn't drive on it. We'll tighten it up for you, no charge." I'd like to pause the exchange here for a moment for anyone who is not mechanically inclined. You CAN NOT "tighten" a ball joint! I don't know if Ron misspoke (a pretty big one, too), or what. But my confidence in his knowledge of cars, the knowledge of the mechanics doing the inspection, or worse, their integrity, went to zero. I didn't push the issue by asking to be shown, because there was no charge involved, and I could easily check it when I went home. Continuing our conversation, he told me I failed the inspection due to my serpentine belt being cracked. Okay, this is plausible, that belt has been on the car since I bought it ~2 years ago, and it was a used car. For that very fact, some months ago I had bought a replacement belt (along with other spare parts). So I declined Ron's offer to replace it, saying I'd just put on my replacement when I got home, and return the next day for the re-inspection. After our exchange, Ron was not very engaging in conversation, but maybe whatever he was working on behind the service desk just required his attention. I paid my fee, and left. That night when I arrived home, I took the belt off... saying it was "cracked" was a stretch. I had to really flex the belt and stare to see any cracks in the ribs. I put on the new belt, then jacked my car up to inspect the ball joints. I did find that the UPPER ball joint boot had torn, but none were loose, and certainly none were on the edge of failing. The following day I returned. When they pulled my car into the bay, I walked around the outside so I could watch what these guys were going to do. They opened the hood and two mechanics looked around under the hood for ~3 minutes before both waking away. ~8 minutes later one of them returned, buttoned my car up, and pulled it around. No shenanigans, I guess they are just slow typists (DMV computer to put in the re-inspection). Ron was much more engaging as I came back into the office, and thanked me for coming back. read more

The manager at Colonial let me know my bearings were fine and someone had loosened a bolt. They saved me at least $1000. I now have a new favorite mechanic and shop. I have been a long time customer and have always appreciated their honest, fast service. Today they fixed a nail in my tire quickly and were kind and courteous as always. NOPE. Stupid as the day is long. They installed my exhaust completely crooked. The tech must have not looked where the tail pipe was going to end up, it drags on the ground when I haul a load of wood or rock. I was a mechanic in college, and I know that I could have done a better job. This was a completely worthless job. I WANT MY MONEY BACK. AVOID! I had a leaky tire that needed to be plugged. I did not have an appointment, and there were a couple of other customers in front of me, but they still got me in and out within an hour. My tires are old and due to be replaced soon, so they plugged my tire "on the house" and didn't even charge me. They definitely seem more focused on helping their customers than making sales. read more

I was extremely impressed by the service I received at Colonial Tire and Automotive. I took my Toyota Matrix there for a second opinion after receiving a $2000 quote from the dealer to fix the exhaust system. Colonial Tire was able to fit me in for a last minute appointment on a Saturday, looked at my car right away, and diagnosed the problem. Even better, they explained it to me thoroughly and gave me some good options for what I could do---as a woman dealing with automotive shops, I do not always receive this kind of respect, so I greatly appreciated the attitude of Colonial Tire's employees. In the end, they were able to fix the problem for $250, and I left the same day with a well-running car. I felt that the people I spoke with were honest and highly competent, and I would definitely take my car there again. read more

I just moved to NC from out of state. I spent most of my Friday at the DMV to get my news plates. Went out to try to get my old plates off and discovered the bolts had rusted and seized. After about 30min of struggle I gave up and looked on Yelp for a local auto shop and found this place. I called over to ask if I dropped by if they could work me in and the no told me it would be no problem. These guys were great. Swapped my plates out for no charge, and when I asked for recommendations for a car wash they recommended a good place just down the street. I'll definitely be coming back for additional work when my car needs it. :) read more

First, I would like to point out that I shopped around for tires before heading to Colonial and their prices are very competitive. The staff at Colonial was courteous and had my car in and out of the shop in about an hour and 15 minutes. This was with tires mounted and balanced, a NC state inspection, and a wheel alignment.
