NAME IS MISLEADING - This location is NOT Durham Tire anymore it is Chapel Hill Tire. Has not been for a while. The actual Durham Tire store is on Roxboro Road and I highly recommend. The CHAPEL HILL TIRE store on Hillsborough Road will not get any of my future business after telling my son he needed about 7K worth of repairs that were almost entirely unnecessary. Thankfully he got a second opinion, or it would have wiped him out financially. Just pay attention to the parking lot now, unlike years ago when it was full now it is mostly empty. read more

I would like to note that this is not Durham tire anymore that it is new ownership with Chapel Hill tire. We have been going to Durham tire for years. I brought my sons car in for service and tire rotation, and alignment. It was acting jumpy when switching gears so I was concerned about the transmission. They were quick and responsive. They ran the "computer diagnostic" test they told me that the transmission the transmission was slipping and needed to be replaced and it would cost $10,000. They said I'm probably better off selling the car. Mind you it was a 2019 model. I ended up taking it to Jake's transmission in which they ran the same diagnostics and found nothing. They recommended flushing the transmission and changing the fluid. Now it purrs like a kitten, and I no longer have the shuttering when the gears change. The general service I asked for was okay, but I found it hard to believe that this new of a car would need a transmission replacement and the fact that that was the conclusion they came to was suspicious. if you're getting general service I think it's fine. But if they start finding a number of things that need to be worked on, I would recommend a second opinion. read more

I went to Durham tire and auto center pros last week to get work done on my car. Not one of the 5+ employees there was wearing a mask inside the building. There was no social distancing going on. I wore a mask because I know that wearing a masks reduces the chances that someone gets the virus from me, but if they don't wear a mask I am not nearly as protected. Shocked and disappointed that they could be so cavalier and have such little regard for their own customers' lives and safety. I will not be going back and I suggest that you consider they have very little regard for their customers before you decide to give your money to this company. read more

Finding a good auto mechanic shop is right up there with finding a good hair cutter or a good physician: you're turning over something that's crucial to your well-being (and possibly expensive!) so you have to be able to trust them. Durham Tire & Auto are definitely trustworthy: they're highly professional, clear communicators about scope of work and price, and when they say something will be done in 2 hours, it's done in 2 hours. I have been going to the Hillsborough location for over 20 years and have been pleased with their work, care and communication with me every time. They have also been straight forward and transparent with repair costs. While they might alert me to an issue that needs attending, there has never been any sales pressure. Like everyone they experience stress and frustration on occasion. I have never seen this carry over to the work and care they do on my car. This place is a RIP. It is run by criminals!!! I went in to get a tire patched. My car was riding rough. I picked it up and paid $25. Then, the next day, it still rode rough. I took it back in and they looked at it and said the tire had the steel belting loose. I asked why didn't they tell me that before patching the tire? They shrugged and said it would be $187 to get two new tires, balancing, etc. A week later, still riding rough. I took it in and they said because the tires weren't balanced. It would cost to get them balanced. I took my car elsewhere and will never, ever return. Criminals. If you take your car here, you have been warned. read more

Almost destroyed my engine. I had a routine oil change at this location that led to a hazardous, dangerous oil leak in my Audi while I was driving to another town. I then took the car to the closest shop and the manager of the new shop said that whoever worked on the car last, i.e., Durham Tire Pros, damaged my oil pan by a cross-threaded plug. I had to get an emergency oil change in a random town. Called and spoke to manager, Jeff, who was quick to respond with that they "don't even touch the oil pan" during the oil changes. I am not a mechanic, but sounds like Jeff is willing to go above and beyond in defending his inferior work. Do not trust them with your car. read more

We took both of our cars here for about three years until 2018. They seemed competent, service was pretty fast, and the location was great for us. Then there was the service where they told us the car needed new tires even though we only had about 20k miles on tires rated for much more than that. This arose in part because the directional tires were installed backwards, which also adversely affected fuel mileage. Thing is, this same shop was the last place to touch the tires (they'd rotated them about 6k miles before this), which meant they were the ones who installed them backwards. It took three different conversations to get them to admit they had any role in this. If their refusal to accept responsibility wasn't so infuriating, their responses would have been hilarious, because they were just so clearly ignoring the logical conclusion that they made a mistake. Turns out that wasn't the most serious mistake they made. Later that week we left for a multi-day road trip to visit a close friend in the hospital and, to our surprise, found that they had failed to firmly attach a hose, a vacuum connector and a spark plug wire after doing some work around the engine. Those all loosened up enough after a few hundred miles that we had some bizarre and frightening front-back vibrations. We barely made it into an auto repair place in small-town Ohio on a Saturday afternoon, and only by a stroke of luck found a mechanic who could patch up the car enough that we were able to keep going, meet our friend in time, and get a proper service the following Monday. Based on our description of the Durham Tire & Auto service, both mechanics agreed that all signs pointed to their service as the genesis of the loose connections and the problems we had on the highway. Long story short, don't go here. More than dishonest and unwilling to take responsibility, they are careless mechanics. read more

They gave me a second opinion and literally saved me thousands of dollars. They explained everything in language I could understand, and I felt comfortable asking whatever questions I had. This was my first time coming here for an inspection and I was blown away by how efficient and quick they were. For car service appointments, I prepare for the long haul - armed with coffee, a breakfast pastry, a fully charged phone, and a book. I had only taken a couple bites of my breakfast when they were done with my car! The line was 5 deep when I arrived, but the employees were friendly, professional, and gave each customer their full attention. Bright, clean waiting space + in and out in 30 minutes. I've used Durham Tire & Auto several times over the past 2 years for oil changes and inspections. They never blew me away with their service but they usually did a good enough job. I recently took my wife's car in for A/C repair and an oil change. They said they would flush the A/C and add Freon but couldn't promise it would last. Well, it didn't, and they did warn me so I'll give them that. What I won't give them is the fact that it is possible to actually diagnose the problem and fix it which they apparently aren't capable of doing. I had to find more skilled mechanics for that. This alone, believe it or not, wouldn't have kept me from coming back. I would've continued coming for oil changes except for the fact that the oil change they were supposed to do during that same visit didn't actually get done, but they still charged me for it. I know this because I know what new oil and a new oil filter looks like. I only decided to check this because they didn't put a sticker on the windshield for my return service. The oil was dark and the filter was dingy so I ask them about it and they swore it was done. It absolutely wasn't because I took it for an oil change elsewhere and there was an obvious difference in the oil color and filter appearance. I don't think they intentionally deceived me with this but just forgot to do it and then refused to acknowledge their mistake. Needless to say I won't be back and would suggest anyone looking for auto service to keep looking. read more

I went to this business several times and had 3 bad experiences. The 1at one, they used the wrong in my vehicle, the second one they broke my tire pressure sensor and put black electrical tape around it, causing my tires not to balance and the latest an the LAST one, I had an oil change on Dec. 17. 2020, on Jan 21, my oil light came on. Today is Jan 22 and I am a Toyota dealer for an oil leak. Well, thanks to Durham tire, they put the gasket on the oil filter I correctly, causing the oil leak. I have to pay for another oil change to be done correctly and take my car through the car wash a couple times to get the oil from underneath. So Durham Tire you are terrible and I will be coming for a refund. read more

I had been going to Durham Tire for many years with many different vehicles and mixed results, mostly for convenience. I recently got a flat and bought a pair of replacements, which was fine, but then got a call saying they did a 24-point inspection (a new "service" they do automatically without permission) and claimed about $500 dollars worth of various system flushes and filters needed doing. They also said the cabin air filter was filthy. I told them to forget everything but the the cabin filter. When I got the bill, the cabin filter cost over $100. I complained and they knocked it down to $80, which included "Fridge Fresh" filter freshener for like $15 that smelled like a urinal cake. Here's the deal: I take really good care of this car through the dealership, which is where I went today for my 120,000 scheduled maintenance. We pulled up the records and the cabin filter had been changed just 10,000 miles earlier. The dealer also said they don't do all those fluid flushings and that you really can't even judge the brake fluid by looking at it, and another Website says flushings are a scam to pad the bill. And the dealer charges $40 for cabin filter, parts and labor. He couldn't believe they charged $80. I won't return, and have advised family who were regular customers in the area not to as well. Too bad. (I noticed the guy I always trusted wasn't there anymore, and wondered if he was the one keeping them honest before.) read more

I took my car in to get a fuel pump replaced and it was completed. Weeks later I saw puddles under my vehicle (it's a second car and only drive it 1-2/week). I saw a drip coming out from the rear and it was gas. This is the line connecting to the gas tank. I took it in and after an hour I was told that the line would have to be replaced and they would have to drop the gas tank for it. I was quoted 2.5 hours for the work and more than I paid to get the fuel pump replaced (they also had to drop the tank for that work + the price of the pump). I asked the person (Ed) if they had to take that line off for the original work and he said yes, so I said it is possible that they have damaged it and he said no the lines were old. I then asked him as a service would have made sense to bring that up while the work was being done so I could have had the option to get it changed (cost of part less than $10). He said that you could not tell that it was old. Although I agree that the hose was old it is hard for me to understand how you can't tell a hose is old as it shows sign of cracking on the outside. To me they are either incompetent and did not see that or they saw it and figured that I would bring it back for repairs. I took my car elsewhere but I have to say I have never seen such negligence!!! This is a fuel line and very dangerous, I just can not understand how they would have missed it! I am irate and will never go back to them! read more

So much for honest mechanics. I brought my car here again a few weeks after leaving this review. Again, they said nothing was wrong. I repeatedly said it sounded like the brakes were going out. He said they heard a noise but it wasn't something I should worry about, that they had two people drive it. I drove it for another month, the noise continued and I brought it in again. They said the brakes were shot, the calibers and rotors too. $700 to fix all that on the front brakes only. I repeatedly asked them if the issue was because I drove them too long while wearing out and damaged them more even though I brought it in to them. The response was uninterested and without any responsibility. I've honestly been avoiding writing this review because I don't want to harm anyone's business, but my experience there has really left me upset and feeling taking advantage of. read more

I started going to Durham Tire after a terrible situation with a tire place down the road. It was late in the day. These men were awesome, I bought tires and they didn't mind checking the date on the tires BEFORE installing them. Another time, I had my car towed to them and told them what I thought was wrong, they said, no not that, and my car was ready. They could have done the work for several hundred and not told me, instead, it was the battery....Great people, honest, I only go to them. read more

Fast and friendly service. I was waiting for my car and a nice lady was waiting for hers also. I am new to the area so I asked her if she had used this place before. She said her husband used to work here a long time ago and he has since passed away. But she still brings her car here because it is still under the same management and they do excellent work. I needed an oil change and was low on transmission fluid. They upsold me to a full transmission service (flushing & replacing the fluids) - my car is at around 100k miles so that seemed legit. The price they quoted ($130 for the transmission service plus $30 for the oil change) sounded a bit high, but they're right by my house and I didn't have a backup ride so I went with it. Final figure was $270 - seems the first mechanic "forgot" to factor in the labor cost for the transmission service. Two stars because they did actually do the (extremely basic) maintenance, but very dishonest way of doing business. read more

I have been taking my cars here for over 10 years, and I have always had great service. I feel like the prices are very fair, too.

Lazy and Sloppy: Wanted a simple battery and alternator replacement. Job was finished way late (they ordered the wrong part). Then when I picked it up, automatic windows and radio were not working. Got the car towed about 10 miles later because a large plastic shroud on the bottom of the engine compartment was never reattached properly and was dragging on the ground. They fixed the bottom of the car, did nothing about the other problems. Trash left in the back seat of my car. Overall a terrible and sloppy job. Will never take my car back there. When I mentioned all of the problems with the service I received, I was told, "sorry you feel that way." Oh and also figured since i spent over $500 they could also take a look at my tires and tell me how long they would last. I was told 3-6 months for all of them. Well, I inspected them myself later that week. 1 tire is new (60k miles left on that one) and another tire had metal threads showing - needed to be replaced ASAP. Again, not dishonest, just lazy as can be. read more

This place charged $500 for a car to be inspected and was told it wouldn't pass and needed some work. Within a week the check engine light is on. Called the Auto Center back and told them and was told they wouldn't do anything and sue them if I wanted them to. So they may be good with tires but anything beyond that please beware!!! So my husband took my car there to have several things fixed/repaired totally over $400. One of the things to fix was my blinkers... The machanic trying to get to the area to fix the blinker somehow busted my windshield. I understand accidents will happen and they were willing to replace the whole windshield free of charge to me. When my husband brought my car home with the busted windshield as they could not replace that until 2 days later i noticed that the piece around the speedometer area was clearly out of line... To the point that you could no longer see the words that light up on the dash. Ex. -The service engine soon light had been on for months now and i could see ALL of the words... Now due to this dash piece being so out of place... U can no longer even see the word service. I asked my husband to inform them of this piece being out of place when he took the car back in for the windshield replacement. When hubby went to pick up the car one of the managers informed my husband that they did not touch that piece that they only had to remove one screw to get to the blinkers. OK but when the ACCIDENT accured that busted my windshield from him trying to get this one screw out... This dash piece that is now out of place was clearing in line with being accidentally hit and being knocked out of place as well. They claim the sun warped my dash and it wasnt them but they tried fixing it anyways but was scared they would break it. After my husband broke this news to me i called the manager to express my total dissatisfaction. He came up with the sun warped story and yes the dash near the glass does have some sun damage but not at all the area that they knocked the dash piece out of place... It is obviously out of place. I informed him that i drive this car every day and have been able to read the words service engine soon and now since their work the word service is now disappeared behind this piece that is out of place. He refused to admit they did any damage sooo i kindly thanked him for fixing my blinkers and the windshield that they busted but let him know that i was not happy at all that we now have to go take my car and pay MORE $ at another body shop for something that THEY messed up! read more
