A waiter greeted us and said he would return after cleaning the area. Another staff member brought us water, and we waited to place our order. While waiting, I noticed a couple sit down at the bar near us. To my surprise, the first waiter immediately went over to them, took their order, and prepared their drinks while my cousin and I continued to sit there without any acknowledgment. I eventually asked the waiter if he was assigned to our section, and he confirmed that he was. I then asked why the couple had been served before us when we had arrived first. His flippant response was, "Because they're regulars." I replied that, with good customer service, I could become a regular too. He then shrugged and said, "They know management." Thinking I must have misunderstood, I asked him to repeat himself. He again said, "They know management." What bothered me most was not that regular customers were recognized. Great hospitality includes making loyal guests feel appreciated. The problem was the message that seemed to be conveyed--that some customers are more deserving of attention than others because of who they know. When I expressed concern, the waiter appeared dismissive and uninterested in addressing it. Instead of clarifying or apologizing, he repeated the same explanation and shrugged off our concerns. At that point, my cousin looked at me and asked, "Are you ready?" We got up and left without ordering anything. This experience was especially disappointing because it was so different from the positive visits I've had here before. We came expecting good food and a welcoming atmosphere, but instead left feeling ignored and undervalued. I hope management takes customer service seriously and addresses situations like this. Every guest should feel welcomed and respected, whether they are a first-time visitor, a regular, or someone who knows management. Unfortunately, this experience makes me reluctant to return anytime soon. I can't say that I wouldn't recommend Succotash National Harbor, as I've enjoyed many good meals there in the past, but this visit left a lasting negative impression.
