This was my second time coming to Chaplin. First time was with a girlfriend in a couple of months ago and I just had to bring my family from New York. We were helping my sister move all day so we came with a huge appetite. While we didn't have reservations, We were warmly welcomed, and given the weather the host was super kind and allowed us to wait inside and even grab some drinks while we waited. We had a couple of different drinks. My personal favorite is the ginger and pearl and the drink with the egg whites. I honestly forgot the name, but it is so good. While not pictured we did get a whole bunch of different appetizers. The brussels sprouts, the muscles, the sourdough bread were also delicious. For main course, we got the tomahawk steak with mashed potatoes and mushrooms, the burger, the steak frites , and the mac & cheese, which is actually on the appetizer menu. Everything was so good. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and had great service. It wasn't too busy so we were waited on quick and efficiently. I enjoyed the sourdough bread and the vegetables. The steaks were finished and the drinks were delicious. They had one vegan risotto option and I tried to finish most of it. Decor and ambiance of the place reminded me of a modern exotic jungle. It was our second time here and such an excellent pick to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. We got there just in time to start off with some happy hour appetizers and drinks, I like that you can sit at a table and have happy hour specials as opposed to only having them at the bar. The mac & cheese was rich and creamy, their oysters were excellent as well, I like that it's served with horseradish, mignonette and cocktail sauce, I didn't try the pork belly but my party enjoyed it. Appetizers were so good I chose to have a couple appetizers for dinner, I really like that I can do this here! I had the steak tips - not chewy at all, very well balanced sauce, smooth mashed potatoes. I also had the chicken Milanese which was excellent, had a little salad with it as well. One of our favorites for happy hour. We try to make it down here once a month. 1/2 priced bottles of wine. Drink specials. Raw bar. The food and service is always amazing. The bartenders make amazing drinks and remember your favorites. It is never packed but always people in there. Have only eaten dinner here once but again the food was amazing. After several lost weeks due to work, obligations and illness, it's date night. My wife and I came to our favorite Shelton spot. They have the best cocktails and after a few we sat down to dinner. Steak Frittes for me, Salmon for my wife and it was perfection. Service was great as always, unobtrusive and attentive. Here are some picks. Always my first recommendation in Shelton. The Arugula salad with Calabrian peppers was awesome. The Truffle fries were better than I had a Gordon Ramsay Steak. Came back for a second visit 2 years later, and most of the food was as delicious as I remember it being! We found that it took a bit longer than we would've liked for each course to get to our table, and our dinners could've been hotter for how long we waited for them. Our cheesecake for dessert was a little warmer than room temp, which we found odd for cheesecake, and the tres leches came with a basil oil that we found a little strange. However, we were very happy with all of our steaks and found them to be perfectly cooked and flavorful. Our server was attentive with refilling water and checking in on us, and you forget you're in Shelton with the fun vibe in the restaurant. From the moment I walked in to the moment I walked out hit all the marks I look for when dining in. A Great table, clean bathrooms, Gender Neutral I Must say! Hip ambiance and VIP service. Most importantly great food. That's what I was looking for and I got it all at Chaplin. Clams, oysters and shrimp cocktail were fresh & delicious. Great Ones! The best of the best was our server, the wife of Francisco the Manager who stopped by at the end to thank us for coming. The host of all hosts. Nice guy! I ordered a ribeye Medium with a side asparagus. Delicious! Cooked perfectly! A great steak I must say. Guess Who! That's what I said. So I had a few and a few more. A Mouth watering excellent cocktail with Nue vodka, Mondino, hibiscus syrup, lemon. Definitely a great choice. Great place. Servers were okay, gave me an uninviting, judgey vibe. I think other than that experience with the staff, I had a great time here'. I walked in without a reservation, the hostess tried to immediately dismiss me but luckily I saw two chairs at the bar and took it upon myself to make it happen. Not sure who runs this place but there is no etiquette. Probably one of the most unettiquette (idk if that's a word) staff I've ever dealt with and I've traveled and eaten in MANY places. The food was good though, order a second round of bone marrow and gobbled it up more so than my accompanying partner did. The octopus was okay, not charred all around but whatever. The dirty martini with Tito's was to die for though. One of the best I've ever had. They even gave me blue cheese stuffed olives. THE BEST. Inside was dim, personal, and relaxed. Rating: 4/5 Chaplin is quirky and unexpected in the best way. This unconventional restaurant featured black and green subway tile, wall-to-ceiling floral wallpaper, and tufted leather bar chairs. My martini was double strained and cold. It was served in a @chefandsommelier_cis glass and this was my favorite glassware that I've seen thus far. The vessel was tall, sleek, delicate, and fancy. The thin rim was a delight to sip from and the glass as a whole elevated the experience and made it so much more elegant. It also didn't hurt that the glass held such a deep pour. The olives were big and salty with a hint of vinegar in the flavor. The menu had a wide range of options from raw bar offerings to salads, sandwiches, and more. This year we spent Christmas Eve dinner at Chaplin in Shelton. The whole experience was phenomenal! We enjoyed all of our cocktails and started out with the sourdough app. From there we ate the bone marrow which we highly recommend, scallops, crab cakes and pork belly. Our entrees included the seafood fra diavolo, linguini and clams and the confit duck thigh. The atmosphere is very nice and calming and the staff is very friendly! Was craving a burger and the Chaplin burger was highly recommended in my time of need. I dragged husband in and grabbed the last two seats at the bar. We stumbled upon an awesome happy hour offering! The bar set up was beautiful, the bartenders were friendly, even the manager greeted us to make sure we were having a great time. All of our needs were met, and then some. Really liked Chaplin! It is right downtown Shelton (which is a cute little area that keeps adding more and more restaurants!). Parking is pretty easy because there is a lot across the street that the public can use. The inside of Chaplin is really chic! Upscale for the area for sure. The burger was very good! Not my favorite burger in the world but it was tasty and convenient to where I live. The prices were reasonable and the service was friendly! Steaks came out disappointing especially for a steak place. My ribeye was delivered medium well! Instead of medium rare. Sent it back and got an absolutely perfect one! Seared in a pan and perfect medium rare. To make it right we received deserts complimentary, free mini espresso martinis comped as well as 4 tokens for any cocktail on a return visit so I forgave them! The fish dishes and burgers looked great so upon return I may try other things. Francisco the manager is a super nice guy and wants to make it right. Great craft cocktails trendy modern atmosphere. Access to parking is a challenge. Dinning room small. Tables packed in...almost on top of each other. No tablecloths here. Asked if I wanted bread....did not inform it was an additional $6.50 costs until I got the bill.. . Limited menu....Ordered 14 oz $65 ribeye steak. Cooked to perfection (medium rare), however flavorless. After being seared, it could have added flavor by basting with butter, rosemary and garlic. Someone seated us and he was very attentive and professional . We ordered three appetizers , the mussels were good the sauce would have been elevated if they added some cream to the lobster broth. There were a couple border line funky mussels otherwise it was a good appetizer. The Brussels sprout app was good but a little undercooked. The calamari was delicious loved the spices and the dipping sauce. The drinks were all over the place the first drink called Up in Smoke was delicious, the second one was just meh. The first time we came to this restaurant we ordered a cocktail with egg in it, it was gross it literally smelled like a wet dog, was disappointed to see multiple egg drinks on the menu, if they are not done perfectly they stink , not worth the risk imho. We stayed away this time. The restaurant was practically empty probably because it was Memorial Day. Ordered entrees two duck entrees and a hamburger, the hamburger had greens soaked with what tasted like lemon and some type of onion jam, we asked for a 55 dollar filet instead of the hamburger because, we weren't loving the burger and what it came with. The filet was charred on the outside and rare on the inside and very chewy and tough for a filet. The duck was excellent We ordered a tres leche dessert which was good and some coffee and that was it. For a slow night everything should have been perfect and it wasn't. They've been around a couple of years at least, but this place is a bit of a sleeper restaurant. The interior is inviting and makes Howe Ave. disappear in the background. Service at the bar is top notch- we've had many different bartenders and they are all great. The happy hour is a great deal, but if you miss that (don't despair) - offerings are varied and all receive attention and are delicious. Look no further than the stellar half chicken with Calabrian chilis over a soft polenta that is very good. Steaks are good, portions generous and if you're in the mood for a burger, then look no more, they do a nice option on regular menu, or slightly toned down for happy hour. Apps were good, we made a reservation and they were accommodating to move us into the main room vS back room as it was chilly in there! I had the steak frites, they were out of the lamb (seriously, already on a Friday night at 6pm?). Service was good, they don't serve complementary bread so if you want to wait 45-50 minutes for steak make sure you order apps if hungry! We tried their seafood platter, polenta fries and bone marrow. My favorite was the polenta fries. It had great texture, not greasy at all. The bone marrow had great flavor but the texture wasn't for me. Our party had their steak, octopus and pork chop for dinner. Everyone really enjoyed their meals. I loved their Brussel sprouts, nice crunch and flavor. Honestly, I really enjoyed going to dinner here. We ordered all 3 desserts because why not?! The steak was cooked perfefctly medium rare, the appetizers were delicious ! So why the 4? 2 things, 1. Tight seating plan. 2. The Bar, not overly impressed with the bartenders ability to mix a drink, had a dry gin martini with lemon peel that was quite honestly, disappointing. Started with the French onion soup, very delicious, nice consistency and sweet. Got the ribeye cooked rare with a side of whipped potato. The presentation was beautiful. Could clink the knife on the crust on the steak, amazing sound. And an amazing bite. Cooked perfectly to my likely with the salt flake on the plate along side a whole garlic bulb cooked and broiled. Finding a great restaurant in this neck of the woods has always been difficult. I haven't been up here in a couple years but on a recent trip to the sports center. The CHAPLIN restaurant appeared on my Yelp and we ran over there with reservations. We were greeted by an extremely nice guy who was also the bartender and waiter (was middle of the day and not busy) And let me tell you he knows his way around even though he been there a few months. (I'd name drop but it's been too long to remember) All of his suggestions were spot on delicious, and all of the drinks on the menu that we could try, with the ability to drive home safely, were fantastic. I don't normally travel hour, just to have dinner at a restaurant at this place will surely see my business again soon. read more
