There's really nothing special about this ice cream shop. There'll easily be a line out the door, but not because they're particularly crowded. Because the layout and lack of a logical system demands it. $6 for one scoop is less than the $8 at Kilwin's. Meh. read more

Interior design resembling an old school ice cream "shoppe" is nicely retro & cute. In a good location in C'ville's downtown pedestrian mall. Good selection of ice cream flavors. Prices are pretty high (kind of tourist-centric high) & flavor of my cherry vanilla was underwhelming although it was quite creamy. In my little Charlottesville crawl, we ended up at Chaps in downtown for some dessert. The interior is super cute, arguably what you'd probably think of when someone says "an ice cream shop" from movies. We got a single scoop of pistachio that had a great creamy texture, but the flavor felt artificial. What a nostalgic blast from the past! We stopped in for a post dinner treat after walking around the Downtown Mall and our entire family was enamored by the sea foam green diner chairs, photos of celebrities lining the walls, and overall retro feel. The counter people were so genuinely nice and helpful it almost threw me off guard. We ended up getting kiddie scoops of the mint chocolate chip (so, so minty!), cherry vanilla, and the 4Cs which is chocolate ice cream with cherries and chocolate chips. Everyone really enjoyed their ice cream and we felt like the scoops were super generous as well. The shop has been around for over 35 years and is locally-owned. So many families were enjoying their time together that it warmed my cold, black, heart. What a gem! read more

Passed by this ice cream shop and I saw their seasonal peach ice cream that I had to try. When you walk into the shop, it had a lot of original decorations and definitely brought you back in time. The ice cream had a great peach flavor that didn't taste super artificial like other peach flavored things. Perfect texture, with a great balance between the sweetness and slightly tart peach. We had been traveling all day, drove for close to 5 hours and had a rest stop lunch. So by 5 pm in the evening when we reached our destination we were starving and need to eat something. Thats when we saw this really cool old timey ice cream parlor in the middle of downtown district and thought to ourselves, well its destiny! Stepping in, the ambience was as you'd expect. Flashy neon signs, old timey seating and everything was perfect. The price range was reasonable too along with their selection of flavors. The servers were helping as people walked in and asking if they would like to taste. I tasted 3 different flavors and decided to go with the coffee raspberry and chocolate walnut. We got our ice cream quickly in a cup with 1 scoop of each and in no time we were chowing it down. But by the time we got half through we realised it hadn't really satiated us. The ice cream tasted good but it was just that. The chocolate one had melted really quickly for some reason while the coffee was still in tact, so now we had milk along with some coffee ice cream floating. For the initial wow factor of this place, we were left dissatisfied with ice cream we got. Maybe it was just one of those days. read more

It is a cute shop with vintage diner feels that I found really nice. The staff was nice, and their ice cream flavours were also unique and tasty. But my issue was with the consistency of the ice cream itself. One minute out of the store and our chocolate ice cream was already creating a puddle in the cup. Must Try: 4Cs, Golden Nugget. Baseline Test: Pistachio All the ice cream is made in house everyday! They go through so much ice cream that the ice cream stays fresh. As many people have mentioned, the entrance and the storefront immediately bring you back to the early 1900s vibes. The store does many things well including separating the ice creams into two sections (nuts and non nuts). Location is also great, so during the hot summer months strolling around the Downtown Mall, can just swing by and get Ice Cream or shake. I had the unique opportunity to get a full comprehensive tour of the shop and see where the ice cream is made! They also do experimental flavors as they continue trying to expand to all palettes! Walking into Chaps, I'm immediately greeted by the sweet smell of fresh waffle cones. All of their ice cream is made in-house, and they happily offer samples so you can find your favorite flavor. While we were in the area we stopped by downtown Charlottesville and stumbled upon this ice cream shop. With three children I knew they wouldn't say no to a stop inside. It's very small and narrow inside but it's actually pretty cool in my opinion. There was only one gentleman working from what I saw but he was extremely nice and friendly. We got our scoops and sat outside. The kids really enjoy the ice cream and I was pretty impressed by the kids one scoop serving. They had vegan options but I was full and did not try any. I thought this was a nice place to get some ice cream. I loved the 50's decor and the unique ice cream flavors. Just be aware that the single scoop cup is quite small but the other sizes are around normal sizes. I got the Vanilla Fudge, but I wasn't the biggest fan of the flavor, but it wasn't horrendous. We also got a Cherry Vanilla shake and that was fantastic! Overall, it's not a bad place to get ice cream. Go later in the day to avoid crowds read more

The front door is a time machine set to a 1950's retro diner/parlor in downtown Charlottesville known for homemade ice cream and drinks (milkshakes, float, sodas, and coffee). Saturday afternoon visit saw a consistent line outside which forced staff to skip pleasantries. Ice cream was above average in taste and varieties available, yet portion sizes could have been a tad bigger for the price. Still a 3.5/5 star place to get a cool, in person or to go treat. There is, honestly, nothing special about the ice cream. And what with tourists and all, there is frequently a long line of people waiting to order. However, the experience of enjoying it sitting outside, in the pedestrian mall, makes it a worthwhile stop on a warm evening. Bottom line, if you pass by and there's a long line then keep going. You're not missing anything special. However, if the line is short and you're jonesing for something cold and sweet to have while you spend a few minutes people watching then this is the place to go. read more

I got the s'mores ice cream because it's a seasonal flavor. I asked for a sugar cone and the guy only charged me for a kid's size, which was nice. He said they make everything in-house. It was so good! Location is in a cute little area on a street that appears to be pedestrian only. The inside of the shop is old; it's definitely going for the soda shop vibe, but it's a bit run down. Whenever someone asked me what my favorite ice cream flavor is I couldn't answer - until I met coffee raspberry. Initially it didn't sound that appealing (I would prefer the two flavors separately) but I decided to try it. The slight bitterness of the coffee and sweet, fruity flavor of the raspberry are a matched made in heaven. The ice cream wasn't too sweet and was rich and refreshing. I personally really like the waffle cone at chaps compared to other places - I think it's not too sweet and it's durable to last throughout the whole experience. I gotta give 5 stars because Chaps is the only place that has coffee raspberry that I know of (plz lmk if there are other places) and I'm currently crying in NoVa because I've been craving coffee raspberry all summer ;( The instant I get back it will be the first thing I get! read more

There are only a couple of tables inside, and it typically is not too busy to sit down inside. I love grabbing an icecream cone or cup of icecream at Chaps and strolling the downtown mall. They have many flavors including Pistachio, Black Raspberry, Banana, Cherry Vanilla, Birthday Cake and more. You can make it into a shake or a float, or get icecream to go. This is a favorite of Charlottesville locals and tourist. We were down at UVA and it's less than a mile or so from campus. It's in the cutest outdoor area, they call it the mall. However, it's an outside retail area filled with little quaint and some old fashion French inspired charm. There are many places to sit around the shop and take in the beautiful scenery, sometimes there is music, and other festivities in the Mall area. Meet the Business Owner: Tony L.

Tony has been in the old-fashioned, ice cream business for as long as he can remember. Growing up, Tony had an interest in making great food and the classic, retro-motif familiar to Chaps that persisted to adulthood. Naturally, Tony chose to work in the nostalgic old-fashioned ice cream parlor business. Tony enjoys being able to serve the public at Chaps Ice Cream where exceptional food quality, service, and creating an authentic experience is the driving force of the business. POUR-OVER - MKT Price +6.50 for Mohammed Aba Nura - Ethiopia (tasting notes: Strawberry, white chocolate, hazelnut) I wanted the craziest tasting option they had, and they recommended this one since it's pretty popular and well-liked among customers. However, one of the barista said he didn't really like it himself. I figured I should still try it. The sips I had while it was still warm was pretty juicy and sweet, but I really didn't like the notes once it cooled down (about 20 minutes later), which tasted sour and off-putting. I should have listened to that one barista and went with a different single origin option. Overall, good roaster -- just unfortunate that I tried something that wasn't for me. The baristas seem knowledgeable and passionate about their craft. I would love to come back next time and try another single origin offering.

The shop itself is very cute, with a handful of tables and stools at the counter. There's a couple of tables outside too. I wouldn't recommend trying to get work done here during a busy time since it's not a huge space.

My guests were stunned by the beautiful designs (works of art really) and they tasted absolutely divine! The whole planning process with her was so fun and special, right from the taste testing to the time of party. The cakes were so beautiful that they really added to the decor of the events. I did everything by e-mail with Anita before going in for a tasting. She has a beautiful front room with sample cakes made up. I was greeted with two beautiful china settings, coffee, water and several cake and filling options. It was so hard to narrow down the choices, but Anita is great to work with. She has wonderful recommendations. I can't wait to see our final product!
