Was this worth the two Uber rides from downtown area? No. You can find better quality BBQ in downtown at places like Woolfpack's. Can't believe people would wait in line for this mediocre food. Definitely don't do such foolishness. We tried every meat that was available--they ran out of a few things, so arrive early. By 5pm there's a dinner rush line outside the door. At 4pm, we still were able to place our orders in relative peace and quiet. All the meats were just okay and almost underwhelming. Ribs were dry, brisket was super dry and bland [and old], pulled pork was the most decent type of meat thanks to the sweet juices in which it was served. Old, wilted cole slaw was drowning in over-sugared, old mayo. Pipping hot sweet fries were the best part of the meal, which should not be the case at an old BBQ spot such as this. Indoor and outdoor seating available. Both are uncomfortable during hot weather, as there are no fans/ACs, or awning to protect you from blasting sun or stiffling hot air. Not a comfortable experience on a war day when you're sweating bullets and trying to shield yourself from unforgiving sun.

Go up to counter and order your food. Amazing ribs. Meat was incredibly tender. Perfect spices. I didn't even add any more bbq sauce. My two sides were baked beans and my all time favorite sweet potato fries. Rustic and cozy. A definite go to.

Laid back establishment, food is prepared ahead of time and you get your meat sliced up and your sides done at the counter. You then go take a seat at a set of indoor outdoor patio picnic tables. I got the burnt ends combo which included another smoked meat, and 2 sides. I got the smoked jalapeño and cheddar sausage, cheesy corn and the baked beans. The burnt ends were incredible, seriously no notes. Fatty, smoky and ridiculously tender and delicious. The sausage had some spice and was also nice and cheesy filled, they were also to die for. Then the cheesy corn was like cream of corn but felt like that mixed with Mac and cheese. They were creamy, cheesy and wonderful! Lastly the baked beans were rich, sweet, and had a thick sauce with some pieces of meat thrown in. They were very tasty and a bit overwhelmingly sweet for my palette, but still delicious. I enjoyed my experience here a lot, definitely had my fill as I wasn't able to finish and had to get a to go box to bring the last of it home. Would come back again in a heart beat.

Great food. The ribs and brisket were well worth it. The BBQ sauce was sweet and met my KC BBQ expectations. The beans were the best I've had in a long time. Coleslaw also paired well with the brisket. You may wait a bit in line, but it moves quick.

Get in line - you are lucky if the line is on the shorter side, order at the counter, watch the staff cut the meats and assemble your plate, go out to the covered patio, get some BBQ sauce and utensils, grab a seat at one of the communal picnic tables, and enjoy your food. Alternatively, get your food to-go, head over to Strawberry Hill Brewing next door, and pair their beers with your food. I came here for lunch with some friends, and after spending the time in line pondering what to order, I decided to get the burnt end combo with brisket and sides of baked beans and cheesy corn, and three ribs. The meats were amazing. The meat was lean but very tender and not dry at all. The ribs were so good; the dry rub has so much flavor that sauce is not necessary. The BBQ sauces are good. I tried the regular sauce, which is on the sweeter side, and the hot sauce, which is a mild vinegary sauce. The sides were decent. The beans are a little sweet, but the cheesy corn is just right. Slap's might be my new favorite BBQ spot. It is not a fancy restaurant, but it is quality food.

This was my favorite for the sauce they had a nice sweet sauce and a nice spicy sauce. They also had some of the best ribs that I've had in Kansas City. Make sure you try the beans and the coleslaw is pretty good too. My coworker got the mac and cheese and liked it a lot.

Good solid choice for bbq. Came on a weekday lunch and there was a line but not too bad. Good amount of seating but watch out for the outdoor seating because there's some honey loving bees. Street parking was decently available. The burnt ends were good but the brisket left more to be desired. The brisket was kinda flavorless and felt more like a tritip because it wasn't super tender. I'd definitely prefer Texas style brisket. Sides were good, but not knock your socks off. Overall was still good!

Slaps was the best KC BBQ experience I've had so far. We stopped and scouted the massive menu. We placed our order and I got the last dish of burnt ends for the day. I'm a glad we weren't a minute later! We grabbed a table outside and grabbed some sauces from the dispensers. The ribs were so full of smoky flavor and the meat was falling off the bone. The burnt ends were bites of happiness! I would gladly come back here! Great service, killer bbq!!!

When you are caving BBQ on a Sunday the only place to go is Slaps. Well any day is a good time for them really but I'm normally not in the KC area as many ch as I'd like so got to grab it when I can. Folks here are awesome and do everything they can to make sure you are happy. Slaps is what BBQ is about no fancy building just a good ol place to throw the grub bag on and dive in. Have your napkins ready Today was pulled pork, jalapeño sausage with their great beans and some tator salad. I won't be eating a late meal for sure

First impression of Slap's BBQ from the outside: classic outdoor barbecue. Two buildings -- one where you line up to order, the other an enclosed "porch" where people sit down with trays of smoked meat like it's a backyard cookout you somehow got invited to. Walk inside and the smell hits you immediately. Beef, pork, chicken, smoke, spices, sweet barbecue sauce hanging in the air. The kind of smell that makes your stomach growl before you even reach the counter. Unfortunately, the service didn't match the welcome the building promised. The first guy behind the counter barely made eye contact and seemed pretty indifferent that I was there. I ordered a quarter pound of burnt ends -- which the menu says you can do -- and was told I couldn't unless I ordered a combo. Strange, but I wasn't about to argue with someone standing next to a pile of smoked brisket. The second person helping was slightly more engaged. I told her it was my first time and asked what side she recommended. "The potato casserole is our most sold." Delivered completely deadpan. The third guy landed somewhere in the middle. We joked for a second, but I was still left wondering where the sauces, napkins, and cutlery were until I asked. Now the sauce station itself is great -- bottles hanging upside down with a little lever underneath so you squeeze them like you're milking smoky barbecue nectar. Ridiculous and perfect. The seating area is rows of picnic tables with checkered cloths. Family-style seating where strangers share space and trays of barbecue. I love that vibe. The food, thankfully, absolutely delivered. I ordered the Mike Johnson Sandwich along with burnt ends, sliced brisket, and the potato casserole. The sandwich is a monster: jalapeño cheddar sausage and burnt ends stacked together with lettuce, sweet sauce, and white sauce on a pretzel bun. When the tray arrived my first thought was simple: I ordered too much food. Naturally, I started eating immediately. The sandwich is juicy, smoky, messy, sweet, and savory with just enough crunch from the lettuce. The sausage tastes like someone melted cheese directly into the meat. The only odd note was the bun -- it was cold, which created a strange contrast with the hot meat. The brisket was excellent. Juicy slices with a beautiful smoke ring. And the burnt ends were the real star. Thick bark on the outside, buttery fat inside. Sticky little cubes of smoked beef that make you nod your head after the first bite. And the sauce? Full transparency -- it's actually the sauce I buy for my own barbecue at home. Sweet, tangy, smoky, and one of the best in Kansas City. If the service matched the quality of the barbecue, this would easily be a five-star stop. Right now the food feels like it's welcoming you in... while the counter still seems unsure you belong there.

Ribs, burnt ends and sausages + all the sides

We bought our out-of-town friends who wanted great Kansas City BBQ for lunch, and it was also my first time. I heard the line can get a little crazy, so we came about 20 minutes after opening on a Monday. We tried a little bit of everything and loved it all. My top three were the burnt ends, the ribs, and the potato side dish. It started getting a little busier as we left around lunchtime, so I suggest getting here early if you are on a time crunch. You'll find silverware, napkins, and all the necessary sauces outside. It's really a no-frills place located in an old, historic-looking building. I would definitely add this to my top three of the best Kansas City barbecue joints.

    Cattleman's Plate
    Anna S.

If you want a shitton of meat, this is the place to go. This was the first place I went to get some KC BBQ and I definitely got my stomach's worth of the stuff. I ordered the Cattleman's plate and ended up with a lot of leftovers of food. The sausage and brisket itself were excellent: well cooked and the bbq sauce options were excellent. The spicy sauce isn't super spicy - it's more mild in spice but still delicious and complemented the meats very well. The coleslaw was more meh and the mac and cheese solid but not super memorable. If I had to go back, I probably would skip the sides. In classic bbq joint fashion, it is seat yourself and you go up to get your own napkins and sauce at a table. There's both indoor and outdoor seating (including on the second level) so it's great when it's nice out. We got there at around lunchtime on a weekend. We did find a parking spot in a lot just past the restaurant, but parking was pretty competitive. The line itself was also pretty long - though it moved fairly quickly. Once you get inside, you can also order a beer while you're waiting - and the cider was delicious.

Tried Slap's BBQ and honestly I think it's overhyped and overrated. The meat looked good and the portions were fair, but I didn't get that deep smoke flavor you expect when you go to a top BBQ spot. It just didn't deliver on taste the way I hoped. The sides like mac and cheese and potato casserole were solid, but nothing that really stood out. Having to eat outside also takes away from the experience, especially when you're expecting a big name BBQ joint. Overall, it's not terrible by any means, but with all the hype I expected way better. Plenty of other BBQ spots give you more smoke flavor and a better overall experience. Service Was pretty fast bartender giving out bars While you wait in long line Eating out side wasn't Fun either!

While KC is known for their tomato based sauce AB's is known for their pork ribs and molasses based sauce. While Oak is popular in Texas, Hickory is the main wood used here to pair that sweetness with the molasses with a little oak to finish. As one of the most popular/famous BBQ joints in the area and maybe the country the line can be long at times, but generally not time consuming of a wait. Like alot of the big boys they have a great system of cooking and serving. Service is somewhere between big ticket and owner operated. Decor is still gas station with a smoke house, but they have some massive roittiserrie smokers using blast cyclinder design for efficiency. Their ribs are meaty, nice sweet bark, spicy sweet sauce, mellow oqk flavor. The open faced burnt ends are less candy and more charred nuggets, juicy, less unctuous as they grill it to finish. I found their turkey a little dry, could use a longer brine or even better twined to keep tight as the fibers tore too much on cutting making it shredded/shaved rather than sliced. Great sausage, thought I'd have liked some creativity as the smoke doesn't really accentuate it as much as it could if they had other flavors. I still prefer the Texas style brisket as the bark is more pronounced. They even have chicken tenders for the kids which are deep fried, a little overseasoned for kids (yes I had to try it). Baked beans were sweet, thick, rich on the molasses and smoke, but at this point its a bean jam and a little rich. Dirty rice which i thought was a southern thing was fluffy, aromatic, umami, a true side dish. Potato salad was a little dry, potatos were sized all over the place so some were overcooked and some closer to raw. Go casserole next time or get the cheesey corn, but you can't do both, it's too much. The onion rings were crunchy and sweet and went with their sauce amazing. The fries aren't an afterthought and complimentary to their other non brisket/ribs items. Prices are avctually below average, service is quite good, but to me being an OG it really has changed under the new management. I'm not sure i'll need to come here again as this was my 2nd trip here and i'm not sure it's a must eat place anymore. After all the BBQ tours I've done I really do prefer Texas and SC styles and have found other KCBBQ spots that give a better representation of KCBBQ.

When we have friends visit from out of town or fellow locals looking for something new we take them there and it's always a guaranteed hit. Their brisket is always top notch along with their pork belly burnt ends and the sausage is amazing. I think their fries are just about the best in the city and my wife agrees. Honestly though I'll be the first to say there are so many bbq places with not spicy sauces that are labeled spicy so I really appreciate that their spicy bbq sauce actually brings a good amount of heat. Not enough that I'm dying but you know it's there. If they sold it in a bottle I'd be the first to buy it for when I grill wings or chicken at home. This time we went and had the opportunity for the first time in a minute to try their new menu options. The thing that stood out was their Mac and cheese. Their revised recipe for it has been firmly cemented at the top of my list for best in the city. Most other bbq places really don't have the right salt level so it is left feeling bland, and to be honest that was my complaint about wolfpacks Mac in the past. But this new revised recipe has the perfect salt amount that drives the flavor of the béchamel they make for it and its seasoning to a place that other bbq places in KC just don't really come close to touching. I wish I had a spoon to eat the last little bit of the cheese sauce at the bottom of my bowl it was that good. Next time I'm there I think I'm going to try their brisket Philly because that sounds too good to be true. I appreciate their staff and owner for being attentive to the finer points and making sure every platter is served to the best of their ability and not sitting on their laurels and continuing to revise and hone their BBQ. Wolfepack has never missed and I don't think it ever will. I'm glad that I found it and I'll be going there for as long as it is around, don't hesitate and give it a try, I don't think you'll regret it.
