Food: 10/10 we all tried something different and it was sooooooo good. The boys would highly recommend the jalapeño sausage we got in the platter, they haven't stopped talking about it almost a month later. Service: 10/10 We had an amazing server who made my boyfriend feel really special for his birthday dinner. The server helped walk us through the menu as first timers, and was prompt when checking on us/refills. Ambiance: 8/10 The interior is very nice. It does feel a little crammed together with this specific location. I'd love to try out their newer location as we were very very close to tables nearby

The Midwest does NOT play when it comes to BBQ. I'll start by saying if you like ribs, you have to try theirs out. It's some of the best I've ever had, fall off the bone, tender and tasty... with and without bbq sauce. That was my favorite protein. Second would have to be the brisket, then sausage. We ordered the street style corn and apple slaw on the side, both were good but not great imo. I'd love to try beans as a side next time!! My kiddo got the mac and cheese, it was soooo good. We shared a carrot cake at the end. Also amazing. What really knocked our experience out of the park was our super star server, De Marco. Not only did he give great recommendations for us first-time customers, but he was genuinely so kind! His amazing service made it feel like we were having a home cooked meal at a friend or family's house. I have to say, not all servers have this kind of magic!! Thanks to Q39 for a great meal and experience. We will definitely spread the word and be back to try more. :) Ambiance is casual and loud.

We overnighted in Kansas City on a cross country drive to Boston and naturally wanted to dine on what made KC famous. We had several choices: Joe's, Bryants, Slaps, Rosedale... but settled on Q39 on the recommendation of the Concierge at the Crown Center Westin. Q39 in Midtown is a short drive from the Westin. It has a comfortable atmosphere which is, perhaps, more inviting than the down to earth grittiness of Bryant's or Gates'. We opened with beverages to shake off the trail dust from an 8 hour drive from Colorado. The Spicy Q Margarita was interesting and differentiated with the jalapeno agave nectar and tajin. The Hendrick's martini was standard though, alas, they could not deliver a Gibson... The menu had the usual assortment of BBQ staples: brisket, ribs, burnt ends, chicken as well as both a smoked salmon and ribeye. They also have an interesting take on Mac n Cheese with a selection of mix-ins including pork belly, sausage, pulled pork, brisket, and onion straws. We opted for two of the combo plates - one with brisket and burnt ends and the other with brisket and pulled pork. The immediate reaction from both of us was shock at the absurdly meagre portions. A serving of brisket was three thin strips per plate while the burnt ends consisted of four small pieces that were hardly burnt. Pulled pork was an ice cream scoop. Having eaten at Bryant's we knew this was beyond outrageous. But while the servings were skimpy it was the absence of smoky flavor that was particulalry egregious. Not sure how the meats were prepared but it was hard to believe that this was smoked meat. The sides were served in small plastic cups that challenged the definition of a side dish. The meal was partially saved by the carrot cake which was moist and had a rich, creamy frosting. Overall, Q39 was a major disappointment. Pathetic servings of mediocre quality meats hardly constitutes a fulfilling experience. We embrace culinary adventure but this was beyond frustrating. Kansas City has exceptional BBQ but Q39 is not in that category. I strongly urge diners to look at Joe's, Bryant's, or the Stack before darkening Q39's door.

Went for a family dinner and was a bit let down. The meat and sandwiches were good, but the sides were not impressive. Mac n cheese was bland, beans and coleslaw were just okay. The prices are pretty high for what it is. I think there are much better options for bbq in KC.

This is a must stop any time we are visiting family in KC. We got there early, anticipating a long line, due to tonight's World Cup game in KC. We were the first in line and the first customer's to walk through the doors, which was cool because just about every staff member was there to greet us! What else went well? Everything! Our server, Jameson, treated us very well and was quite efficient. Our drinks were refreshing, the spicy onion straws were a crispy, crunchy, oniony delight and our mains were exceptional, as always. Three of us ordered the brisket and burnt ends platter and we all got different sides, each one flavorful and fresh. Honestly, it is hard to beat their brisket and burnt ends...juicy, smoky, tender goodness in every bite! The fourth person loves the pulled pork sandwich, which she thoroughly enjoyed again today. It was also pretty neat seeing and hearing all of the diverse customers wearing their Colombia or Ghana colors and many others wearing their red, white and blue USA colors and everything in between. A most excellent dining experience at Q39 once again!

Delicious food, great service and a high energy / modern vibe were the highlights of Q39. Ate here with a friend for lunch, wasnt disappointed. We had the wings appetizer was as good as advertised. I had the max & cheese with sausage and it was just okay. Brisket was really good, pulled pork sandwich looked amazing. Overall, grea tplace for BBQ with an upscale and modern twist. Good for dates, business lunch or just hanging out with friends. A bit too loud for a business meal.

Now this is Bbq... this is what I was dreaming of, the restaurant was busyyy given we went for an early dinner/ late lunch. Service was mmleh, could have been better but wasn't the worst. Couldn't even tell you the name of the sever because she never spoke to us haha just took the order and was never to be seen until we close out. Everything we order was a-ma-zinggggg, except the cornbread in my opinion. Wasn't my thang but it was not bad...tho.. the Mac and cheese was my fav, stood no chance against me or the crispy house made chips

We come here every year that we are in Kansas City. Q39 is just THAT GOOD. We always have amazing service here, but Marvin III aka Trey was excellent. He was attentive to our party of 10. Drinks never empty and table always clear for more plates of food to arrive. This is the place for burnt ends and brisket. There's so many BBQ joints in Kansas City, but this is one of the best.

Q39 was one of the highlights of our trip to Kansas City! I definitely recommend making a reservation since it gets very busy. Our waitress was incredibly kind and helpful, especially since it was our first visit. She recommended adding a couple of ribs à la carte to our order, and it ended up being one of the best suggestions. The burnt ends are a Kansas City staple and an absolute must-try. They were incredibly tender, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. If you're visiting for the first time, the platter is a great way to sample a variety of meats. I also highly recommend adding one or two ribs à la carte they were so juicy and delicious that they didn't even need extra barbecue sauce. One of the best BBQ spots, you have to go!

Tasty BBQ joint in Kansas City, MO. It's a pretty packed restaurant but the ambiance is unmatched. Great service from Isaiah! Meat was tender and we enjoyed the brisket and ribs! Sides were solid. The butter pound cake was the perfect dessert to end the night!

Q39 is the ultimate spot for Kansas City BBQ, especially if you're hunting for the best burnt ends. It's in a shopping plaza with average parking (maybe 80-100 spots). Even though they were packed, we got seated right away, and our server, Olivia, was awesome! The food absolutely blew us away. We got the burnt end special (the corn on the side was amazing) and the super flavorful 3-meat platter. Fair warning: the portions are huge! We definitely could have just shared two dishes, so we happily took a bunch of leftovers to go.

Birthday Dessert: Warm brown butter cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with strawberries (exact name I think). Yummy :)

We absolutely loved Q39 for so many reasons. We were seated quickly and greeted by our server Kevin aka Peaches! He was training his colleague Nikki and boy is she lucky. His customer service and personality made us feel right at home. His menu recommendations were spot on and his attentiveness during our dining experience was beyond amazing. Everyone at the restaurant was so warm Melissa, Nikki, Mark but Peaches we are glad we were seated at your table. Thank you for the birthday love you all showed my son. Kansas City has a special place in our hearts :)

I sat by the bar and Devin was so friendly and helpful. He even shared the cucumber mocktail recipe with me. But I am sure I won't be able to make it as good as he did. I got the 2 item combo: baby-back pork ribs and the beef brisket with sauté vegetables. I give the baby back pork ribs a 5/5! They were finger-licking good. After one bite, I said to myself, this is what KC BBQ is all about! The sauté vegetables were good too, a solid 5/5: the flavor, texture and the variety of veggies were all perfection. The beef brisket for me was just ok. The color didn't look right and the flavor was just off the mark a bit. Ambiance was causally modern. The food was worth the $15 uber ride from my hotel.

Q39 Midtown Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Q39 Midtown

    Are dogs allowed?

Only if they're service animals. The patio is temporarily closed for construction right now as well. (8/1/22)

    Gluten free menu?

There is Gluten free options on the menu at Q39, on the menu it will have a GF next to the item that is gluten free.

    Do they have outdoor dining?

    Yes, they have a patio

I want to go here for dinner, is there a worry of most items selling out?

    I've never experienced this!

Does this place allow pets? Thanks?

    No.

It is really hot today. Is wearing a (dressy) short allowed?

    you could wear gym shorts

Is this place family friendly (kids)?

    Yes

Is this location Kosher? According to Google, it is, but I wanted to check again.

A real kosher place wouldn't have pork served or dairy in its business so no. I remember eating pork here, and the desserts I would have to check but any dairy served would also not make it really kosher. Having said that, if you are only kosher u…

Is there a third party service that will do delivery for Q39? DoorDash doesn't.

No. Unfortunately we do not allow third parties to deliver for us. Hope you can visit soon!

    Is there a kids menu?

    Yes!

    Is there parking?

    Yes, but not a lot.

Can I add one more person to make that 9 people?

Looks like you're trying to change a reservation, I'm not sure the restaurant will see this. My advice would be to call them directly at 816-255-3753 for the Midtown location or 913-951-4500 for the Overland Park location

Can I bring my dog to the patio?

Unfortunately unless it’s a service dog, we cannot have dogs on the patio.

    What time is happy hour?

There is currently no happy hour offered at Q39 midtown, but Q39 South (the other location in Kansas) has a happy hour M-F from 3-5:30

What do they cook with peanut oil? The menu says it is used "in some items".

Things that are fried: Wings, French Fries Onion Straws, that sort of thing.

So we loaded up and showed up one day around Noon. Ambiance was really cool. It's in the middle of some sort of progressive looking shanty-esque suburb. The kind of place that does drag queen bingo. I was right at home. Inside was college sport bar, but with a nice, huge board on the wall of all their beer selection. It Was quite expansive. Service was top notch, too. Nice server took care of us, made sure our glasses were never empty. The food came out at a good clips, and we got an unexpected bonus of free little beignet-like donuts with some delicious dipping sauces. As for food, we started off with a jumbo order of the Truffle Parmesan Hand-Cut Fries for the table. We got to choose two from their extensive list of aioli dipping sauces. Fries were good. Dusted with the perfect amounts of truffle and parmesan. And the sauces were my oh my. I recommend paying the upcharge to just try them all. I mentioned the time earlier, because we had no idea we were stumbling upon their brunch menu. Even more options to choose from! I got the Crispy Waffle Smash Burger (smashed hertzog beef patties, fried egg, smoked bacon, merkt's cheddar, caramelized onion, maple aioli, crispy buttermilk waffle). This thing was really nice. Perfect waffle, not too small, not too big, and no oily or anything obtrusive. A nice bun option. Eggs and bacon sometime get lost against giant burger patties, but with these smash patties, the extra accoutrements really stand out and make this burger really stand out in my mind. I also for the try the Smokestack Burger (smoked burnt ends, smoked gouda, whiskey bbq glaze, pickle relish, chipotle aioli & crispy jalapeño straws). Uhhh, as you can read, this thing was loaded with goodness. Fatty burger, smokey burnt ends, sweet boozy glaze, acidic pickles, and texture from that jalapeno. This was the perfect burger. I insist you order this. Overall, my research did not reveal Beer Kitchen to me, locals recommendation did. Shows that you gotta use your street smarts instead of your book smarts sometimes. Best meal I had in Kansas City.

The restaurant interior is a combination of both rustic and elegance. Our server was attentive and so sweet! For the appetizer, we ordered the whipped goat cheese. Even if you don't like plain goat cheese, like my husband, trust me, you'll like this. It has a honey mixture on top that makes the goat cheese all the more addicting! It is accompanied by DELICIOUS crusty bread, salad that tastes like it is mixed with a SAVORY sweet onion vinaigrette, and prosciutto. For entrees, I ordered the regular friend chicken sandwich with a side of fries. As I am from the South, I am VERY picky about my fried chicken. As far as restaurant fried chicken goes, this is THE best fried chicken I've ever eaten! The skin was thick and crispy and the chicken breast was very juicy! Not greasy at all. The condiment is a spicy aioli, which was not too spicy (a good thing). It also comes with a pickled cucumber and onion salad that was addicting. The sandwich has one of my favorite types of lettuce: Bibb. The fries were PERFECTLY crispy and seasoned. My husband ordered the fried chicken, which comes with mashed potatoes and gravy and a salad. He loved his meal and said his fried chicken was also the best. The mashed potatoes, which of course I had to try, were so buttery and the prime example of why it is a comfort food. Again, we can see why Rye is recommended by multiple people. We cannot wait to eat here again!!!!

Generous pours wine, but maybe we just gotta bartender in the right mood. Just FYI, everything was fairly heavily breaded. Service was very attentive, especially because it was busy because of the games. Easy to find right across the fountain as a landmark. Simple ambience.

The food was incredibly fresh, beautifully prepared, and absolutely delicious. The service was outstanding attentive, friendly, and professional, making us feel right at home. The ambiance was warm and inviting, creating a perfect setting for a memorable night out. And oh my goodness, I can't forget to mention dessert! The carrot cake was hands down the best I've ever had. It was the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. We will definitely be returning soon! A huge thank you to the talented chef and dedicated staff for creating such a wonderful place. Love this place in the Union Hill neighborhood! I had to go…read morearound the restaurant a couple times before I saw the parking garage, which is very close and convenient. Came here with a few friends for lunch. They weren't busy at the time. Welcoming nice atmosphere. Loved the added touch of the cute little container of flowers on each table. We started out sharing the deviled eggs. Two with Sriracha, two with smoked salmon, and two with bacon. Loved them! Also shared the brussel sprouts which were good, but it seemed like it was missing something. I ordered the artichoke carbonara. It was very tasty and rich. I've never had bucatini noodles. It holds the sauce very well because they're basically like noodle straws. The egg on top was an excellent added addition to the dish. I really wanted a dessert, but I was so full after eating. After I left, I wish I ordered one to take home. Next time for sure. Oh almost forgot our waitress was excellent.

I found The Pressed Penny online, and google map directions were easy to follow. I lucked out with a parking space in the small lot, and entered through the back door. Inside it's just dark enough, with warm wood and warm lighting throughout. There's a variety of seating options; I chose a barstool since I was alone and wanted drink recommendations. The bartender was welcoming and helpful. I chose a cocktail from a printed list, then ordered food after chatting with other patrons about their favorites. it seems the place recently changed hands and the menu isn't as expansive as it once was, but plenty of options suited me. After my first drink I was interested in a gin & tonic, but the gin selection was pretty slim so I tried a new-to-me Scotch instead. The food was ready pretty quickly. Food and drinks were all very good (I had some sort of fried chicken chunks) and i was comfortable just hanging out until the rain let up. A TV or two showed a hockey game, but without audio; a cool playlist helped set the mood. I'll be back next time I'm in town!

She advised us to not to order so many tots due to the size of the portions which she was right! They were big servings. Got Brussel sprouts like people recommended, they were decent. Some weren't burnt tasting, some were delicious. Not consistent. Maybe I'll try brunch next time I go.
