I usually don't care much about the sides because I'm there for the meat, but wow the apple slaw and the street corn were crazy good. Tarragon is a great add for the potato salad too. While on vacation in Kansas City, the only thing I required was some legit BBQ. Q39 Midtown delivered on my wish with some outstanding homemade, fall-off-the bone deliciousness. My girlfriend and her family showed up without a reservation on a Thursday night and the place was completely full. The staff at the front told us it would be around a 25 minute wait for our part of 5. However, we were seated within 15 minutes, starting our journey into this great experience. You can't miss this location, as the smell from the smoker hits your senses several hundred yards away. Our server was DeMarko, was incredibly friendly and efficient, offering up his personal favorites and answering questions from our table. The atmosphere was alive and buzzing. Not much room to move around as the place was elbow-to-elbow at 7pm on this weeknight. I was immediately drawn to the Certified Angus Beef Brisket and Burnt Ends Competition Plate ($26) with two sides. For my meal, I went with BBQ beans and the Mac and Cheese (an additional $3.50 charge). Within 15 minutes, our meals were delivered with the gusto of an enthusiastic smoker parade. At first glance, everything looked amazing. Then, I let my tastebuds do the talking. First of all, you won't need a knife for this place. Brisket is easily torn apart with a fork, and falls into the plate with each bite. The smoke is outstanding and legit. The burnt ends were so damn good, I wish there were more. Silky smooth and savory in each bite, you will be craving more. The beans were quite good as well, with sweet sauce and little burnt ends included in the deliciousness. The Mac and Cheese was also gooey and tasty, with a solid breadcrumb crunch layer on top. Our group loved the meal as our pre-dinner conversation turned to a few "oohs and ahhhs" in between bites. Overall, Q39 is one of the new editions to the KC BBQ scene and so far, they are living up to the hype. I asked a handful of people where they like to go from the airport staff to locals and all of them mentioned this place. Hats off to the team here at Q39. The meat was tender and delicious throughout the day, the restrooms were clean and well stocked, and the service and front of house staff was on point throughout.
