Char-Grill is one of the best spots for hot dogs and hamburgers in Raleigh! I grew up eating here and Cook Out, and coming back during my visit to the city brought back so many memories. I had to stop by--and I'm so glad I did! I ordered a chili hot dog (absolutely delicious), crispy seasoned fries, and a Char-Grill hamburger--the meat was flavorful and cooked just right. Everything tasted just as amazing as I remembered. One thing that sets Char-Grill apart is their old-school ordering system: grab a pencil, fill out your order slip, and slide it through the window--no talking needed! As a new resident of Raleigh, I'd been waiting to come here for a while, since I had heard so much hype. I figured out that I had to write my order down on a pad, so I did that and slid the sheet down metal chute through the window and into the restaurant. The food takes a few minutes, but at least everything is made fresh. And I guess it gives you a chance to make a friend, as long as the people aren't too weird! I got the 1/2 pound burger, it was juicy, the American cheese was well melted. For toppings, I just did shredded lettuce, tomato, chopped onion, and sliced pickles. Pretty good, but I wish they had more topping options like jalapenos or grilled onions. They threw in a free packet of honey mustard, even though the sign the window said it would cost $0.54. So I very much appreciated that. The fries were salted decently, and they had a little thickness, not too think, but too wide either. Nice crispness outside. I enjoyed them very much, especially with the honey mustard. Sadly, for beverages, it's Pepsi products, not Coke. So at least I was able to get a cold Cheerwine. And with my magazine coupon, it was just under $11! Excellent value. I felt pretty heavy and loaded after I ate everything, but it was quite good. read more

Wow - my last review for here was 2010! It's 2021, and I am pleased to report the Char-Grill experience is as good as ever! For those that have never been to Char-Grill (and if you live in Raleigh - get on over there) it is a simple and unique experience. You write your order on a paper form and send it down a metal chute to the kitchen, then go around to the window and wait for your order. Want to eat at the restaurant? There are a few picnic tables around. On this day, I was able to enjoy my meal at the picnic table under the shade of a tree. My meal is the Hamburger Steak Jr, with chili, mustard, pickles. It comes with fires (Raleigh's best). And today it was as good as it always is. Take a break from the national chains and enjoy this Raleigh original! read more

I haven't been to a Char-Grill in I don't know when so I decided I would give it a shot. The smell coming off the grill was pretty good. I like the ordering system. I got the char burger double meat with bacon onions catsup and mustard side of fries medium Mountain Dew and medium chocolate shake, came out to $18. Very small burger and it looked like a McDonald's burger, bacon was pathetic and barely any chili. Fries were ok. Mountain Dew needed more syrup and the chocolate shake is basic. Old style burger place. Walk up to the counter, fill in a paper slip what you want and deposit it into a slot then wait for your name to be called. All food is cooked to order. Burgers are char grilled (thus the name of the place) and have a nice taste to them. $21 for two burgers, fries, drinks and a chocolate shake. The burgers were nicely cooked, juicy and full of taste. The shake was not worth ordering. It was not creamy but icy, was not something that they tasted like a shake. Medium sized drinks were plenty large. No reason to order a large drink. read more

I love char-grilled burgers, and I love nostalgic eateries. So this place for me has all the markings of a potential 5 star. Why 3? Because the burgers were cooked beyond well done into some territory that bordered on sawdust. And my wife and I had a total of 4 burgers, so a decent sample size. Granted, I understand what you get when you go to a place like this - you really don't expect the burgers to be medium, or even really juicy. But oh my, were the burgers ever cooked beyond belief. So while it was still tasty due to the charbroil, its not something I'd really want to repeat very soon. This place is a little walk down memory lane - not because I've been here, but I am old enough to have been to places like this. The architecture is mid twentieth century modern. All straight angles and abundance of glass. The ordering was a mystery until I saw a regular customer scribble her order on the order form. The staff just sort of shuffled around behind the glass and made no attempt to throw me a hint as to what I was supposed to do. At moments like this you feel equal measures of being stupid and infuriated that things are so ambiguous. I figured that a quarter pounder and fries would be more than enough, and it was. Although I initially thought my order was botched, as the wrapper looked to be concealing a hot dog! Well, never fear. It turns out the buns here are not round, but elongated. A very untraditional shape to be sure. The burger though is very traditional in flavor. We're talking about a nice smoky flavored beef patty. Real slices of fresh onions and tomatoes. And nice fat fries cut from real potatoes, not reconstituted from mashed up potato matter. The truth is that the burgers taste more like something I would grill at home. Or the burger I once ate at a place in Harbor City called - Char Burger. Of course there were the trips to the old A&W drive in restaurants, which were similar to this, sans the smoky grilled flavor. All in all a burger that is more than a cut above the national chains. The only minus is that the setup is very impersonal. The non interactive ordering, and the very robotic waiting and pickup just doesn't fit the retro feel of the place. Suggestions - save some trees and ditch the order forms. I think this is a great spot for a quick and cheap lunch or dinner. I feel like this is probably what the original McDonalds was like! Burgers are fired up on the grill to order, toppings are simple, and the menu is limited. I was confused about ordering the first time I went in, but as others have mentioned you fill out your slip and stick it in the order slot. My daughter to me to this wonderful place after having a procedure at Duke Hospital. It was around 4:15 pm and I was NPO since the night before. So I was hungry and thirsty. It was my first time at Char-grill but WOW! I loved it. I got the Hamburger steak burger, fries, and Dr Pepper. It was perfection. They cook you order right in front of you. The fries are crispy, hot and delicious. I could only eat half my burger and half my fries. But believe me, I took the leftovers home. Didn't leave a single fry. The service was 100% perfect. I like the paper slip ordering, the feel of a place that doesn't have an indoor seating arrangement and just a good simple burger. Nothing fancy here, 1/4lb steak burger with mayo, cheese and extra pickles. The fries are also just as good. Kind of remind me of french fries you find at a county fair. The other night I happened to head up north on Atlantic, and came across Char-Grill just when the munchies started to kick in. Everything here is your standard, no-frill, drive-in/drive-thru diner stuffs. Hamburgers and cheeseburgers, chicken sandwich and (Carolina) BBQ sandwich; of course there are less meaty options like a BLT or grilled cheese sandwich. But no matter what you choose, add a side of thick cut fries and a milkshake, you got yourself a nice meal even close to midnight. Consistent delicious burgers and fries every time I go. And the smell when you drive up, it is intoxicating in the parking lot. I love the junior burger and the cute bun it comes on. When the weather is good for having the windows down, I'm surprised there aren't more wrecks near Char-Grill with the smell of hamburgers cooking making you crave one right that second and swerve into their parking lot. Their burgers are consistently good. The hamburger steak jr. with fries is the perfect amount of food. If you're still hungry, the apple turnovers (think McDonald's old school apple pies) are great! Just know that they're filled with molten apple lava which will burn your mouth badly if you don't let them cool a bit before diving into one. The shakes are also nice way to finish off your meal. They only come in chocolate and vanilla (or zebra if you can't decide). The hot dogs and char burgers are also very tasty.
