if one is as into seeking great hot dogs as I am, one goes where ever the trail leads - even to the front of a Lowe's Home Improvements store in Cary, and this trip was definitely worthwhile.. There Jim Rivers has been setting up his steel hot dog stand for nearly 14 years now, and is there almost everyday beginning at 11:30 - he misses some days because he also sets up at the North Carolina State Fair each year. He steams his weiners - Red Hots (neon red Southern weiner)for $1,50, Nathans All Beef for $2.00, Jalapeno (with the pepper already in the weiner) for $2.50, and a Sausage dog, also for $2.50. His toppings(whatever you want at no additional charge) include mustard, ketchup (ugh!), chili, onions, slaw, mayo (double ugh!), cheese, sauerraut, red onion (foo foo), and relish (we get visitors from the far north). The Red Hot is your basic Southern Chili dog with a weiner of questionable parentage, chile, onions and/or slaw, on a nice, soft bun. This is a very good hot dog. The chili is not home made since the All Knowing, All Seeing Wake County government has decided that only brick and mortar restaurants can prepare such items in their duly and regularly inspected kitchens - this apparently is true even if the rating is not particularly good. Jim uses Patterson's Grand Slam All Beef Chili, which is available in 5 pound tubs or #10 cans. This is very good commercially prepared chili, right up there with Matinee brand used by Allen & Son in Chapel Hill. The Nathan's All Beef hot dog with chili, mustard, and Jim's slaw is an outstanding slaw dog - one of the best I've tried, and I've tried more than a few. The quality of the weiner reals comes thru, and is very well showcased by the soft bun, tasty chili, and not too sweet mayo based slaw. On my next visit, I'll try the Jalapeno dog and the Sausage dog instead of the All Beef - well, probably in addition too it. Jim is friendly and personable, the service is quick, the pricing reasonable - there is no seating available, but sitting in an airconditioned auto munching several dogs ain't at all bad. read more

Super yum !!! Been meaning to get a hot dog here for quite a while. Glad to have finally tried them. For $2 a hot dog you cannot beat this little stand which is out front at Lowes. Only criticism is that the chili could of been warmer. But it was tasty. We will stop by again. read more

Yes, I really am reviewing a hot dog cart in a parking lot! They are that good! Jim's is located near the entrance of Lowes Home improvement in Cary. He serves up some of the best hot dogs around. It is an old fashioned stainless steel hot dog cart and can be found there nearly every day from 11:30 AM to 5:00 PM no matter how hot, how cold, or how wet. The owner definitely has customer service figured out. He is friendly, funny and efficient. He always is smiling and greets regulars by name. Now, the important stuff, the dogs... Jim serves steamed Nathan's dogs from Coney Island, NY. They are top of the line, natural casing, all beef dogs. They taste great and snap when you bite them. He has all the normal condiments including mustard, ketchup, sweet relish, diced onions, chili. slaw, kraut spicy brown mustard, and cooked sweet Vidalia onions known as "red onion sauce." The spicy brown mustard and red onion sauce are the perfect combo! Jim's also serves up the red, Carolina Packer style dogs for those so inclined. Stop by and check him out. Dogs like you got at the ball park when you were a kid, just a little more cents. hard not to like them, they do slide down nicely. if you like gourmet dogs, this may fall short, but the old stand by red hot with chilli, slaw and onions, this rocks. read more

I love food stands and food carts. It's a great way for local businesses to show their stuff without the high overhead costs. Jim's is one you must visit. His stand is always outside of the Lowe's Improvement store in Cary and he braves even the worst weather conditions to serve his dogs. I picked up the Jalepeno dog and a Nathan's dog. I don't eat many hot dogs, so I wasn't sure what were good toppings (I basically only put ketchup on my dogs). So I asked Jim's advice and I ended up with Carolina-style dogs (which had chili, onions, and something else....I can't remember now). But they were scrumptious! And priced reasonably too! Jim's hot dogs are very woth the trip and worth all 5 stars. We often go just for the hot dogs without a trip to Lowe's needed. Jim is super nice, lunch is fast, and he makes a great hot dog! He does have seating available with two round patio tables. I was unsure the first time eating a hot dog from a guy outside a Lowe's but this has honestly became our go to spot for hotdogs. Purchased four hot dogs on 5/417 approx 2:00. Wife and I ate them. Had a very bland, fully cooked in our kitchen dinner. Later that evening, we both experienced stomach cramps and diarrhea. Mine was more severe and lasted about 24 hours. Based on timing, the hot dogs were the diagnosed culprit. Stand DOES have a 97 Rating, but something was amiss. Bun, HD, Ketchup, Mustard, Chili or Slaw? Don't know...but never going to eat there again. Have traveled extensively to Mexico and know better to eat at street Taco stands....looks like same should apply to this. read more
