My husband was so excited to move here and show me Cook Out! Even as someone who doesn't love or frequent fast food, I can appreciate the novelty of Cook Out. The panoply of options is very fun, as you can get a small chicken wrap, small chicken quesadilla, and hush puppies all in one order. The sizes definitely allow for trying of different things! Most importantly !!! We did finally try the watermelon shake. We were told dozens of times that we aren't North Carolinians until we try the infamous watermelon shake. We ordered the watermelon shake with extra watermelon (recommended by neighbor) and it was LOVELY! The black seeds threw me off, but other than that, it was a light, refreshing, and tasty experience. Okay, I just don't get the hype! I decided to finally try a Cook Out tray one night after hearing people rave about Cook Out since moving to the area. Aiming to get the true experience, I went with the Cook Out Style burger with onion rings and a corndog as my sides. The burger was...fine, just small and extremely greasy. The corndog was dry and tasted reheated from a freezer. And they completely forgot my onion rings. Over $10 for a greasy little burger, a frozen corndog, and a drink? I will never understand why this place is so popular, maybe just a lack of other late-night options? I had a pretty disappointing experience at Cook Out in North Carolina. The place was extremely busy, and we ended up waiting about an hour for our food, which was frustrating. I did appreciate that they listed calories on the menu, but that was about the only highlight. I ordered two hot dogs, white cheddar cheese bites, and a chicken quesadilla, and everything was underwhelming. The hot dogs were gross, the cheese bites were a joke--literally just four quarter-sized pieces--and the quesadilla had no chicken in it at all, despite being a chicken quesadilla. We couldn't finish our North Carolina trip without stopping at Cook Out. The chargrill style gives their menu offerings a family backyard bbq style feel. Ordering a chargrilled burger is definitely the way to go. We were also impressed by their chargrilled chicken sandwiches. The coleslaw was bland but the hush puppies were good for fast food. The shakes were a bit disappointing; the chocolate malt tasted like syrup and the peach lacked flavor. Nonetheless, we loved our entrees. Food is always fresh and delicious. Great staff. Definitely quicker than McDonald's down the road. We often order corn dogs, hush puppies, and milkshakes from here. My favorite milkshake is the WATERMELON milkshake. It's so good! I wish there was a non dairy version. I went to the @CookOut Capital Blvd location in Raleigh, NC, and it was not a great experience. The first problem was the chicken nuggets. The nuggets were visually different, but most dissatisfying was the taste and quality of the nuggets. The were visually wider, but very thin. The nuggets were practically too salty to eat, and they had a really watery texture. If these will be the normal nuggets going forward in the future, I will not be ordering them. The burger was inedible. The first thing I noticed was how soggy the buns were, and if I had sandwich bread in the house, I would have replaced them. The lettuce was wilted, like it was soaked in water before being put on the burger, and a tiny piece as well. The meat patty was oblong, and not even close to being round. It was no where close to filling up the bun. It was only about 65-70% covering the bun. This was by far the worse experience I have ever had visiting the best burger chain in town. I always loved CookOut over all of the other places that serve burgers, but they need to step their quality back up. I think to keep the prices low, they are using cheaper cuts of meat, and inferior ingredients. Please go back to higher quality. But Cookout is the best place I can think of to get a milk shake. I don't think there's anything I can say about Cookout that hasn't already been said a bunch of times. It is hands-down our favorite fast food place. The food is consistent, service is always speedy and the prices are very affordable (seriously, about $5 a person with drinks and sides). Even though we're fans of the trays and all the options (under $5), I typically order a grilled chicken sandwich, club style with no sides ($4.30). It is a marinated grilled chicken breast with bacon that is always cooked perfectly (not limp and soggy like so many fast food places), a slice of tomato, cheese, lettuce and mayo on a hamburger bun. It's filling and always hits the spot. It amazes me what Cookout can do with such a limited footprint; always a small building (packed with staff) and small parking lots, yet it all seems to work perfectly. Cookout is the place that we take all out of town guests to and they all leave fantasizing about opening a Cookout franchise at home. Oh, and try a milkshake. Great late night craving food. We actually ate at the one on Western Blvd two nights in a row. The food is greasy and delicious, especially the seasoned fries, and the milkshakes are amazingly good. So many combinations. My husband dreams about the banana walnut. According to him there was a walnut in every bite. The thing about Cook Out is that you're paying for exactly what you get: a lot food at a cheap price. As far as fast food goes, you get the most food and more options compared to other fast food places. I've been here many times, and during my most recent trip, I ordered a tray with two cook out style hot dogs, cajun fries, a corn dog, and a side of a dozen hush puppies. I was strongly considering going all out and getting two corn dogs with my two hot dogs to make the ultimate cook out hot dog tray, but decided to go with their fries. The hot dogs are good here, and have nice smokey flavor. I got them cook out style, so they were loaded with chili, onions, slaw, and mustard. I also piled my fries on top to give it a little extra crunch. The onion rings are pretty good here as well. They have nice thick coating of batter that is fried nice and crispy. The hush puppies are my favorite side by far. For $1, you get a dozen freshly fried hush puppies. Every time I order a dozen, they always come out fresh and hot. Overall, Cook Out is a good option for quick and cheap fast food. Don't expect the best quality, but you do get a lot of food. The milkshakes are also nice and rich here as well, which include whatever mix ins you want. I can't wait until October when they have the pumpkin pie shake. Welp the menu is vast! You can choose anything that you want from a footlong chili cheese dog to something low crab like a grilled chicken sandwich. However, the claim to fame is the cookout tray menu. What this is, is a combo deal ranging anywhere $4.59 to $5.00. You choose your base. Anything like a spicy chicken sandwich (my fav), regular BBQ tray, or a 1/4 burger to name a few. Then you choose your two sides such as fries (get it canjun), hushpuppies, wraps, or a corndog. And then your drink from any coke products to the HUGE Sweet Tea! All for $4.59 or so. This is one of my favorite locations beside the Western Blvd location near State.
