Came across this place looking for a food truck that was closed and I'm glad it was. The inside seems retro 50's. You can smell the burgers being cooked inside but outside. Since Covid, price goes up and quality goes down. No longer the best burger in the area. It's fine but pricey.

I recently went to this Char-Grill and thoroughly enjoyed my lunch. Where else can a family of three get lunch for $20?! I feel like even McDonalds cost more. I think the key is to get the steak burger over the standard burger. The standard burger is quite tiny. The steak burger is much more substantial and tastier. My son got a BLT and it was loaded up, he also really enjoyed the vanilla milkshake. I like the vibe of the interior, very old school, and true to the original. After we stuck our order card in the slot, our food probably only took around ten minutes. We will definitely return for a fast, family friendly, affordable lunch! read more

I go to this location all the time and am moving to west coast tomorrow so I wanted to eat it one last time. This was by far the worst experience I've ever had. I got a double cheese burger with chilli, slaw and ketchup. They didn't put ketchup, there was hardly any chili or slaw, the patties were both super burnt and the fries were way under cooked. Never had food this bad from a char-grill anywhere and I'm a huge supporter!!! Mom also got a burger with bacon and they put not even half a piece of bacon on the burger. read more

I hope my experience today was an anomaly. Arrived just before 11am to place my order in person. only one other customer in the restaurant, but it was still early. Took the order to go and upon plating it up at home sensed something was off. The double cheeseburger was over-charred, the slaw was maybe a teaspoonful (only covering the center of the bun, maybe a tablespoon of chili and 1/2 slice of bacon. The fries were pale and cold. Although I do not frequent CharGrill, I have experienced more substantial toppings and crispy fries in the past. Too late to go back now, but in the future I will double check my order before driving off. If this is the new "normal" then I will get my burger & fries elsewhere. read more

I SO wanted to give this Char-Grill burger a "5" for flavor, but was beyond disappointed in what I received! Pictured is the pitiful burger I was handed. I haven't eaten at a Char-Grill in 30 years. I was engaged to the FOUNDER' of Char-Grill's wife's brother. He would be humiliated at this quality of burger! I ordered extra chili AND coleslaw. Thinking for the price, almost $5 for a burger, I'd get chili and slaw extending to the edge of the bun, even in a THIN layer, and a burger that was substantial, I didn't check it until I had driven off. As the picture shows, there was exactly a measly 1 level TEASPOON of slaw, and perhaps 3/4 of a teaspoon of chili, and a small very thin burger! At first I thought they had given me a "large slider" by accident. I decided to take a picture after one tiny bite. The flavor, WITHOUT of course any chili or slaw on most of the burger was fine. I couldn't assess the chili OR slaw as there wasn't enough. I was so dissapointed and ordered a little more food across the street at Zaxbys. This place is apart of my childhood and I will forever say that they're one of the BEST, if not the actual best burger joints that I've ever tried. I usually get the Hamburger Steak with coleslaw, cheese, mustard, ketchup, lettuce and tomato. You'd think with all of those ingredients, that it'd be messy but it actually holds up well on the buns that they use. The burgers taste like they are fresh off the grill...because they are. You can literally watch them cook your food after you submit your order through the cute little ticket window. DO NOT forget the Apple turnovers. The decor is like a typical 50s drive in with old music to boot. Once your food is ready, they call your name over the speakers and you pay at the window. Lovely spot from my hometown. Keeping it moving... You go in, find a card to fill out your order, and slip it into a slot. When your food is ready, they will call out your name over a loudspeaker. In the meantime, you can wait along the side in assorted seating. Finally, get your food and find a table to eat it on, or leave. As far as I could tell, there is no ordered seating. The tables and chairs are for whoever gets to them first. None of this is obvious from jump street. Didn't wait long at all. I sat and ate my pulled pork sandwich, char grilled burger, fries, apple turnover and vanilla milkshake. I was in a tasting mood and had no intention of eating all of this. And thankfully I didn't. For once my willpower actually showed some guts. The burger tasted fine, but it wasn't nice to look at. It was just a flat, uninteresting thing, but maybe if I'd gotten more toppings, it would've jazzed up. The pulled pork sandwich tasted like it should taste and the fries were pretty good, despite being very salty. The apple turnover looked like something you'd buy at the store and then heat up at home - but it didn't taste that way at all. It was flaky in the right spots and pretty delicious. Milkshakes are stupid. Sure, my taste buds love them, but it's all false advertising. You always get a straw that you won't be able to use because they're so thick. And if they aren't thick, then they're not very good from the start. What a ridiculous path to travel. Thankfully, Char G. knows this, so they give you a long spoon for digging into your drink. We chose this place because of convenience to the other fast food chain we went to. The restaurant is situated in a small shopping center next to Papa Johns. Papa Johns has their parking spaces and char grill has there because Char Grill was so packed there wasn't any spaces left for them. So we parked in Papa John's parking lot. When you walk in you have to fill out your order on a piece of paper and slide it in an compartment. The workers are covered with pixie glass while they cook but you can see everything that they are doing. The place was full of people and they were really busy. I was impressed with how fast our order came. But we had someone with us and their burger took awhile and they placed their order right after us. We ended up order a double burger, fries and a vanilla milkshake. The price came up to about $11. Our guest felt like the burger was really expensive for what he got. The restaurant in itself was okay, because they were busy they probably couldn't maintain the front of the store. But someone did spill something and when they did a staff member rushed to clean it up! The cashier that checked me out wasn't very talkative he basically took my money and moved to the next person. Good spot for when you want something a little better than fast food. I often get the hot dogs or cheeseburgers here. I like to get them the old fashioned way with onions, chili, mustard, and slaw and they don't disappoint. The fries are good and crispy but sometimes a bit salty. Get them with a vanilla milkshake and dip them and you will be in heaven, though! I have had the steak burgers and they taste good and are a good size. The only negatives I have are: 1) the hamburgers are flattened like a pancake when you get them. I don't know if they squash them on purpose but you will never get a fluffly bun here. 2) You have to order with a piece of paper that doesn't give you the options you want. For example, you cannot order a little hamburger with mayo because there is no checkbox for it, just mustard. But, it always satisfies me so I give it 4 stars. read more

We had been wanting to try this place for a while now. And everytime we went it was always packed. We finally made our way in. The way it works is you have these order pads that you select what you want and you slip it through and the cook, cooks the meal for you. If you have never been here it can be a bit confusing. And it doesn't help there really isn't a way to talk to anyone and ask questions as you have to wait in a long line to get to the cashier to ask. Take for example on the order pad there was no indication that you have a ketchup or mustard option. However, there is mayo listed and ofcourse the toppings such as lettuce, onion, tomatoes. So you may assume that they don't have that option. When we asked they said you have to write it in. Well after we got through figuring out what ordering your food entails. They call your name when the food is ready and that is when you get to the cashier to pay for your meal. The burgers are pretty good. The french fries are the frozen kind but still good. We love this joint. Great hamburgers. Kitschy 1960's diner theme with a twist. Cult following in the Raleigh area. This is one of the better locations in front of Home Depot next to Papa Johns. Ordering for the uninitiated can be intimidating at first. The trick is using multiple order cards filled out using a stubby pencil like the ones issued at a putt putt golf. You'll figure it out. I eventually did - and I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed... the best part is waiting while sitting in a 1957 Chevy back seat until they call your name over the PA to pick up your order. My fav is simple cheeseburger with ketchup only. Great fries. Skip the deluxe steak burger. Try a BLT or chicken sandwich for a change up. Both are fantastic. My wife is a fan of Carolina style and always goes for chilli, slaw and mustard on her burger. For a super high calorie hot mess of a treat - order chilli cheese fries. It's not a horrible place by any means. With that said, if I had to rank it among other fast food joints (think 5guys, BK, McD's etc...) I'd have to put it close to the bottom, maybe a notch better than Wendy's. I wouldn't suggest it's A-ok just based on the selection of burger places in the area. The burgers aren't anything special, they come on a bun with a small assortment of fixins requested as one orders. It's overpriced compared to other fast food places. For the about same money I can go to Five Guys and get a much better quality burger with better fixins. The dining area is kinda cool looking, but "meh" at the same time... the tables are all a polished aluminum color - very monotonous - that's the "Meh." While waiting for one's order, one can choose to sit in the back seat of a '57 chevy (bench) or a plain bench. Some people seem to love that place... I'm just not one of those people. read more

I love the burgers at Char-Grill. You can tell this is a local hamburger shop with history. When you enter Char-Grill, you will see the cooks making the burgers and hot dogs in a glass-in kitchen area. There are pads of paper with the menu items and you check off what you want and hand it in. Wait for your name to be called and pick up your freshly cooked food. I have always gotten the Junior Steak burger and it is served on an oblong bun and not the traditional round bun. I have yet to try the hot dogs and they looked really good coming out of the window. The fries were fresh. You can also see the 50's themed soda Pepsi machine and rock'n roll style layout that is similar to a Johnny Rockets. Fries were plentiful, crispy, thick cut, and salty. Burger was very good with a soft style bun. For what it is its good. I would recommend it. Seeing a Char Grill with an indoor dining room sort of blew my mind. Definitely convenient when winter comes. It's helpful that you order your food on the check lists, so there's basically no way your order can be misunderstood and you can take your time figuring out toppings without feeling pressured at the window. I usually get the junior cheeseburger since it comes with fries. This location was suoer busy, but our food still came out quickly and the staff was friendly. While not exactly the Char-Grill experience, this particular location is one of my favorite in Raleigh because it actually has a restaurant where you can sit down. Most of the Char-Grills around are simply in the middle of a parking lot. You park, place your order, then sit outside in your car or on a bench and wait for you number to be called. This location has the same concept as the others, but you place your order inside and there are lots of booths and tables inside as well for you to sit-down and eat. A great location to visit in the wintertime, or when you want the taste of Char grill with the ability to stay a while. read more

Saw their sign that said 'Shakes' and decided I needed one. I went inside (there is no drive-thru) and was waited on promptly. The place smelled great with the burgers cooking. They took my order for my shake and I was out of there in less than 2 minutes, The shake was so thick I couldn't get it through the straw - but that was okay because they also gave me a spoon.
