And now to the food. First off, the spice levels are no joke. My spouse got through a finger and a half on medium before quitting, though they found it more manageable the more they ate. The hot is HOT, it definitely grabbed my attention. But it wasn't overpowering and didn't detract from the flavor of the chicken. And that chicken is GOOD. Flavorful, juicy, good crisp. One of the best chicken sandwiches I've had, hands down. The waffle fries were good (slightly soggy); dipped in hangry sauce they were very good. Really liked the mac and cheese; cheesy, good texture (better than other places mac and cheese). Wasn't a huge fan of the Texas toast but I had eaten quite a bit by that point. The wings lacked flavor and could have been fried a tad bit longer for a crispier bite. I was almost afraid that they were undercooked, so I ate only one wing out of caution. I will go back, but only for reputable menu items and not the wings. The order was about $14 without tip. I thought the portion size of the tenders and fries were pretty good based on what I have received from other chicken spots in the area. An order of fries is about four bucks (I didn't see any combo meals on the menu), but you will receive A LOT of fries. If you are dining with someone, you might want to split an order of fries unless you are super hungry. The tenders, which have three spice levels (mild, medium and hot) will come out PIPING hot, which is a good thing. I even had to wait a few minutes to eat the chicken because the food was so hot. I guess this definitely is a good thing if you are doing take out because the food will not be cold as ice by the time you arrive home...depending on how far you live from the restaurant. Overall, I thought the food was delicious, and the spice level of medium just was what I was looking for. I thought it was kind of funny/interesting that the chicken tenders were served on a plain white piece of bread with three pickles, but I guess that's just how Roaming Rooster does it. Perhaps, the bread is there to soak up some of the oil from the chicken, which I guess is a good thing. The fries were pretty awesome because they reminded me a bit of the fries from Five Guys, which I LOVE. Service was fine. One of the workers seemed to be a bit grumpy, but the woman who took my order had a nicer attitude. I stopped by around 6/7 pm so maybe the worker was just over their workday...a mental state that probably all of us has experienced on multiple occasions. I enjoyed the spiciness of my sauce, but the sauce also had a bit of sweet to it and was pretty light (some sauces are gelatinous). Same with the teriyaki. The shrimp were well prepared (there were 8 of them!) and the sauce nice and light. The server came by a couple of times to fill water glasses and I actually took some of my entree home for dinner - with the rice, it's a lot to eat. Speaking of the rice, although it's simple boiled white rice, I liked the texture and it was good. The recipes here are inspired by their family's home cooking, which really comes through in the food. Today, there are 4 locations: 3 in VA (the original in Alexandria I've been to) & 2 I haven't as well as the only location in MD, which I have been to their Rockville location on Sunday, October 26, 2025. My girlfriend's parents love Hard Times Cafe. They used to go to the one in College Park, but it closed so they occasionally will drive much further for them to Rockville. My g/f & I were in Gaithersburg that afternoon, and her parents mentioned inviting us to dinner at Hard Times, which we agreed. It had been a while since I had been there and got samplings of the various chili. I thought I liked their signature Cincinnati chili the best, but I think I realized I liked the Texas even more. Terlingua chili was great too. I got a beer, which was good too. Service was friendly & prompt. I got a chili dog with Texas chili & fries, which were great. We also split chili nachos, which were good too. Hard Times Cafe isn't necessarily a place I'll go out of my way for, but it's a place I enjoy when it works out.

Served with a soft and sweet piece of cornbread it's a tasty, quick, and inexpensive meal. Hard Times opened - and closed - a shop in my hometown a few years back, and I don't get down the road as often as I used to. Today's meal gives me incentive to make the trip more often in the future.
