Great twist on traditional Filipino dishes! We went here to try their "Chori-burger," which is their take on the burger using a filipino chorizo and beef mix as the "patty." It included a fried egg cooked to perfection, lettuce, cheese, and a special sauce that was so creamy and flavorful! The crunchy skin was not glass like, it had no crunch and the meat was lacking that umami taste and just plain boring porky. And don't even let me try to describe the garlic fried rice!!!! I could have sworn I wrote a review for Kuya Ja's years ago but apparently I haven't! I was happy to discover they have better hours now. It used to open and close at in weird intervals so this was nice to find out. I stopped by on a rainy Sunday lunchtime. Parking was easy to find right in front of the store. Orders can be placed online or in-person at the counter. I highly recommend placing the orders ahead of time because of the wait. I saw a few people go up to the counter wondering about the order status as it was taking awhile. The store also carries several of Gwenie's pastries and dessert items. Fresh cream filled donuts available along with cakes and pies just to name a few. I got the lechon kawali over garlic fried rice and my friend ordered pork belly sisig combination. Definitely not a great place for a large parties. And they had metal chairs which are not very comfortable, so not really a place to hangout for a long time and socialize while eating. The combo is one of the best value meals around! My go-to is the Lechon Belly, but I have also tried the Sisig. The meat comes with rice, atsara which is pickled papaya, and a drink. The Lechon is flavorful and the skin is crispy. The whole plate is greasy, but at least some of that is soaked up by the rice. I have found that it is better to enjoy the meal on the tray fresh at the restaurant. We've had kuya ja's catering before at an event and we liked it but we wanted to try it in person to see how it faired. Filipino food done properly! We were visiting the DMV area for an NIH visit. I saw Lechon Belly advertised on a hotel pamphlet and got intrigued. We peeked at the menu and got excited for the offerings and so we decided to give it a try. On the first visit, I tried: + Tamarind Pepper Fili-Wings: SO. SO. GOOD! I heard this from another patron ordering the wings. Order it with extra tamarind! + Tortang Talong: I struggle with making a good torta. Thus, I tend to order it when I see it on any menu. Solid. + Longanisa: This was for my daughter. She did work on a side of this sweet-cured Filipino chorizo. I was able to sneak a piece or two. I see why she liked it. + Ube Pie: This was actually my wife's order. My few bites were delicious. During this first visit, I saw Lechon Paksiw on the side board of their overhead menu. I knew I had to come back. So we did. On the second visit, I had: + Lechon Paksiw: OMG. Delicious! Just as good as the version I grew up on. + Ube Milkshake: This was the other reason I needed a second visit. I forgot to order this on the first pass. This is the second time coming to Kuya Ja's in over a year. I visited on a Saturday between lunch and dinner times and saw people in line (well, not really, they were just looking at the overhead menu) and all seating options full. I was quickly ahead in the line after checking that everyone else in line was just browsing the menu. I was greeted by a female attendant who was standing next to a large container of donuts that was just put on the counter. I was surprised that the donuts were open there because if I sneezed, I surely wouldn't have liked being the next customer. I order lechon with rice, pancit noodle, and another lechon dish with the garlic rice and egg. The total was over $60! If you pay by credit card, you are shown options to tip 18% to 40% more just to get your order taken at the counter! Hmmm.... I don't really think that is service. But, maybe they will wow me when the food comes out. When the food is ready, they come out one at a time. They call your name and some guy will carry the dish towards you. You would think he would place it on the table for you, but you actually have to take it from his hands. He even leaned over on one foot so there was an increased risk that the dish would have fallen on the floor. So, I definitely wasn't wowed after being forced to overtip before receiving any service. The size of the rice dishes are pretty small. The ratio between the meat and rice is off. The americans will want more meat. The natives will want more meat and rice. It was small for the price. The lechon was good. You can break your teeth on some hard to eat pork skin. There is also plenty of fat on the pieces so that is good and bad. But lots of oil too. I guess the americanized folks may not like it but a potbellied native will drool over all that fat and oil. The pancit noodles are drenched with soy sauce and thus is pretty salty. The chicken in the noodles don't have any flavor on its own. As someone who likes to cook, I generally like layers of flavor. But every ingredient in the pancit tastes the same. Actually, the noodles were salty and the meat and veggies didn't have any flavor. The lechon with the garlic rice is just brown colored rice. I didn't see or taste any garlic in the rice. The egg on top is served sunny side up with the top pretty much raw. If you order a drink, there is a fountain drink area but the area is tight to get to. Several times some dudes would bump into me. Once or twice is understandable. But on a hot summer day, I don't like sweaty and hairy forearms brushed against me. Ew. I saw some customer eat the meat and throw away all the rice and pickled shredded veggie thing. He didn't look satisfied. All in all, it is Filipino food. And, it is in a convenient N.Bethesda (Ok, Ok, it's Rockville/White Flint) shopping center. The food tasted ok, but could be better. The portions are tiny. The prices are high for what you get. The best thing is that when you get in the car to leave, and if you get that quesy feeling as you back up the car, Aldie and the PGA superstore both have bathrooms where you can unload the battle going on in your digestive system. Just keep in mind that the Aldie bathroom is dirty. The PGA superstore's bathroom is way in the back. So, you may not make it if it's an emergency. Would I come back? Sure....only if I'm craving Filipino food ...but that happens only once a year which is about right on how often I'd visit this place. From the moment you walk in, the kindness of the staff is exceptional! I like its location as it allowed me to pig out (literally with the lenchón) and then walk around Aldi and Home Goods. The smooth R&B music was also appreciated. I wish the restaurant was a bit bigger. I got lucky and a small table opened up but this place is so busy that I felt blessed that I was able to find seating. And why is it so busy? The amazing, juicy, churchy skin, perfectly seasoned lechón. Generous portion and a great combination with the fried garlic rice. Wish a bit more papaya salad was included. I also tried the arroz caldo but wasn't a fan. It was very filling and piping hot but the flavor felt like it was concentrated soup. Can't wait to try them for catering services! I make a trip here every couple of months. I've tried several items on the menu, but my favorite and go-to dish is the Lechon Belly with garlic rice. The pork is always juicy, and the skin is perfectly crisped. The platter is delicious on its own, but adding the sauce takes it to another level of flavor. The lemonade is also really good. They offer pastries from a bakery called Gwenie's, which are a nice treat. The service is consistently excellent, and the staff is always welcoming. read more
