Charkoal Portuguese Grill is conveniently located at the Berkley Heights train station. This first visit for takeout proved to be really good experience. I ordered the Garlic Shrimp, which came with Rice & French Fries. The rice tasted freshly made and was plentiful; the Garlic Shrimp was well seasoned and the aroma alone made me eager to taste. Once I got home with my order I couldn't wait to dive in. The food was still hot and ready for me to devour. I enjoyed the meal immensely, but could have done without the fries because as always, when fries are covered in an aluminum pan, they lose their crispness; other than that, everything was great; I will most definitely go back & try other menu items. read more

Picked up 1/2 chicken dinner. Dry as a bone and could not eat white meat at all. What I could eat of the dark was tasteless. Served with huge portion of fries and rice which were so-so in taste. Would have appreciated the option of no starch and a vegetable instead. Ended up throwing most of my meal away. Perhaps their other menu items are better. read more

We found charkoal Portuguese and had their food last nite. Small gem in Berkley heights. We ordered the kale soup, fish soup, grilled steak, fried fish sandwich and cod special. The portions were v generous and the food was delicious. Have plenty of LO's for today. And oh the bread was real fresh Portuguese rolls which was sooo good. We topped it off w flan n tiramisu. Last year, someone on our town forum threw down the gauntlet. He defied anyone to find a better dish in Berkeley Heights than the Picadinho served at Charkoal. My wife and I like a challenge so we quickly placed a take out order. We had previously only ordered ribs and chicken from Charkoal believing the gold standard for Picadinho could be found at Clark BBQ. The result? The Picadinho is very much worth the hype. No dried out cubes of meat here. A beautiful stew of meat and potatoes, add shrimp if you like. Intensely flavorful and although a tad on the salty side, you should definitely get yourself some if you are in the area. Is it the best dish in Berkeley Heights? Drunken Noodles from Proud Thai, a Pastrami sandwich from Goodman's, Yellow Curry from Hop Hing, the Short Ribs at Strega? Let's just say it's up there. Go and enjoy. read more

We ordered Charkoal Grill at 5:30pm this evening for delivery.. Confirmation said it would be delivered at 6:45. I filled out the online delivery form with the address as well as my phone number. At 7:30pm we called over to find out our food had been ready and sitting on the counter for over an hour. The rude women on the phone not only was unappolagetic she was yelling over us about how busy they are and how we can come get it or wait until they find the time. If they would have just had the kindness to call us when we placed the order at 5:30 we would have cancelled or planned for pick up. I will never order from this place again since they clearly do not need mine or anyones business. read more

There is a difference between dealing with inflation and taking advantage of inflation. I got a steak sandwhich and was asked if I want lettuce and tomato on the sand which. I said sure. Little did I know a slice of lettuce and a slice of tomato would increase my bill by 5 dollars. Even worse the steak was about the thickness of a penny and on an enormous roll and dry as meat can be. So i spent 20 dollars to take a steak sandwhich home and throw it away. At least the tomato was good. First and last time I'll ever go there. read more

So I have been a regular customer from the days it was called Sherman's BBQ. Food quality in the past was great but I've noticed that the new owner is all about increasing the price of the food on their menus and reducing quality. I ordered their ribs with rice and beans. The beans was half filled with water, and the ribs they gave me was nothing but pathetic. For something that cost over $15 dollars, the ribs were not bigger than my pinky finger. I understand prices of food is gone up but the increase in price has to match the quality and quantity for the amount being charged. So needless to say, I may not be going back until they get things right. read more

Under new ownership and the food went from very good to worse than cafeteria mush. Hire the original guys back and I will update my review. I miss the great food I used to get from here. For example, a great Taylor ham breakfast sandwich has been replaced by spamlike ham. Ribs that used to be great now have no taste and the vegetables are soft and mushy. read more

It used to be good place to go but not anymore. The service is really suck. I ordered by the phone and went there to pick up. There is someone before me, look like they has no clue what they are doing. The chef tried to figure out where is his order. Another guy was on the phone, doesnt care nothing. A woman walked in cleared the mess and gave the guy his order. Then, she just left me waiting no greeting not even asked me what I ordered and continue walking in the kitchen start cooking and ignored me. I have to yell and tried to get someone attention, hello ??? I need to pick up my food. WTH The service is getting worse these days and not the place I would go back for BBQ anymore. The chicken were dried and ribs are also dried, small portion and not tasty anymore. What wrong is this place really? Like most people I've been cooking a whole lot lately, but I wanted to give myself a break so I tried take out from here and I was very happily surprised. Ordered the full BBQ chicken with beans and mixed veggies, and they do not play games with the portion size, it was a full chicken with tons of veggies and a big serving of beans - it could easily feed a family of 4. Or one guy after a serious workout like myself, I crushed almost all of it but I still have a nice serving left over for lunch tomorrow. The bbq on the chicken was very flavorful, the skin was delicious, they chopped it up into nice portions. Will definitely order again in the future and try some other proteins next time. Okay so I had high hope for this place, but I was disappointed. The chicken and rice and beans were good but the ribs. I ordered 1/2 order of ribs with rice and beans. And the ribs were so salty..and now I'm in the bus with a stomach ache and trying not to throw up. I don't know what was up with them ribs but my tummy didn't like them, and now it's trying to get rid if that toxic waste. They didn't have a old smell or taste. I was hoping for authentic taste, but the food is quite bland. Even the aji amarillo sauce they sell on the side did not deliver the punch that it should. I had many dishes prepared by my Portuguese friend, and they were nothing short of amazing. If this restaurant is trying to adjust the taste to "American" palate - don't! Excellent BBQ!! I love the chicken dinner platter. The chicken is cooked really well with a delicious seasoning/marinade. The food isn't too salty which is also a plus. I would also recommend their tacos! I had the chicken ones which looked amazing but I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed with any of the options. My order took 1.5 hours although restaurant is 4 miles away, they gave me a regular coke instead, calamari was tiny and completely dry and cold. We have gotten take out from here a couple of times. We did the online ordering system which worked very well. The meat (BBQ chicken, pork ribs, and shrimp app) were all good, but the sides and veggies were so blah. I didn't think that people in this area would try and get away with anything less than fresh veggies, but their "mixed veggies" are that corn and green bean mix from the freezer that I haven't eaten since the high school cafeteria, and the broccoli was also the frozen kind, which is just really hard to eat due to texture and, in this case, lack of seasoning. The yellow rice was also just so-so. I kinda wanted to give 3.5 stars since the meat was really really good - just don't count on the sides at all. Next time I will see if I can just get meat alone and prepare my own sides at home. read more

New restaurant with very generous serving sizes of BBQ pork, rice, and beans. Portugueze style, with a dry finish but lots of flavor and falls off the bone. The location is very convenient, being at the train station, and the facilities are new, clean, and well maintained.
