If only I had time to read reviews on this doctor. Please read this before seeing Dr. Bretan…read more First, his office staff is amazing. However, Dr. Bretan has no patient etiquette. I started seeing him after an emergency room visit that determined I had a kidney stone (first one). Was in severe pain, he scheduled to perform surgery to try and retrieve the kidney stone more than a week later. The stone was found to be too large for him to remove, he placed a stent in and had me follow up two weeks. At my follow up appointment he schedule for me to have lithotripsy done two weeks' later. All this time in pain. Once the procedure is done I was scheduled to see him two weeks later and have the stent removed. I went to my appointment and was sent away because he wasn't sure if he had insurance approval to remove it in the office. 3 days later I come back, explain I'm still in pain and was told once the stent was removed I feel a lot better. Still had the pain. My primary care doctor sent me for testing and it was determined I still had the 9mm kidney stone. Contacted him he had me come in to be scheduled for a second lithotrispy two weeks later. Remind you this is already 3 months after my first visit with him still in pain. I have the procedure done. 5 days later I'm still in pain and haven't passed any stone particles. He had me get an ultrasound (which by this time it has been determined the type of kidney stone I have doesn't show up on an ultrasound, and the Radiologist has recommended a CT 3 times already). The kidney stone doesn't appear or has been broken up. I see Dr. Bretan afterwards. He comes into the exam room doesn't even say hello or good day instead states "There's no kidney stone, your pain is all muscular." I ask him then why do I continue to have the same and still haven't passed any of the stone. His response is your kidney stone is gone. The next day I was throwing up, had diarrhea, and a temperature. Left Dr. Bretan a voicemail because his office is closed on Wednesdays. Never returned my phone call. I ended up going to the ER. They treated me and said my symptoms sound like I could still have the kidney stone or the particles of the stone is still there. The next day I call his office and the office staff was informed I had been to the ER but was recommended I contact my primary care doctor because according to the ultrasound the kidney stone is gone. Each visit he never greeted me when entering the room, nor physically examined, or give me a cordial departure. At my last procedure he didn't come into the recovery room to check on me. Four months later I'm still in pain and turned over to my primary care doctor with pending issues. At each visit I waited in the office for 30 - 60 minutes, and was seen for less than 5 minutes and not physically examined. If I had the opportunity to choose another doctor I would. Once I started treatment it was too late.

It took me several months to resume some semblance of a normal life and a long time before the pain subsided. I had Dr. Harf perform the same surgery on the two vertebrae above the last surgical area. I was off the cane and back to a normal life in three to four weeks!! NO PAIN. I have found most doctors were trying to get me under the knife without suggesting another way. Dr. Harf was great and we tried for 4 months with special injections to help my back. He suggested that if this injections did not help me then we could do surgery. The injections only helped for so long and I was becoming more in pain. Last month had my first spinal surgery and it went great! I feel great and I am walking around like I use to before my pain started. Thank you so much Dr. Harf you have given me my life back!

This is further demonstrated by their high attrition rate. If anyone comes in who has innovative ideas or ideas that would threaten the drama and daily grind of the dead-end, underpaid, middle-aged female staff, they're out. They think that they are the best game in town or anywhere for that matter. Their interviewing process for new hires tends to be very focussed on the interviewee's personal life and it's components, rather than their professional life and skills that would be an asset to their organization. This is demonstrated by being called back for a second interview, where they purely discussed more aspects of one's personal life, because they didn't get their fill from the first interview. Don't get me wrong, if they follow established guidelines, I have no doubt that they can successfully treat cancer. It is however not a place that I would ever dream of working or identifying with.

Having County health insurance for about 9 years, it's been extremely difficult to find a good PCP. What they don't teach in Medical School is compassion and good bedside manner, you either have it or you don't--he has it!. Every appointment I go there leaving satisfied with my visit and having an overall sense of being cared about. He truly listens to your concerns and does whatever he can to treat you with respect, dignity, and compassion. I have been his patient for little bit over a year now and in that one year he's done more for me than a doctor I've been with before for over 5 years. I am truly grateful for everything he has done for me and continues to do for me now. He connects with his patient's on a deeper and personal level that gives you that sense of comfort with him and that to me is what truly makes a remarkable doctor.
