We stopped in Baker City for lunch to go on a long road trip home from Denver to Vancouver, WA. It was a little Oasis from fast foodville. We ordered sandwiches which were freshly made by friendly staff. We both had pastrami & Swiss on rye with lettuce, tomato, red onion, their special oil & vinegar sauce (which the sell by the bottle), mustard & mayo o rye. Their website lists corned beef, which is my fave but they haven't had it for a couple years, according to the person who made my sandwich. Their website is due for an update, apparently. No matter we enjoyed our sandwiches anyway. The only think that could've been better was the rye was too dry. Soft rye is the best. Maybe it's not as popular. We also got milkshakes. Wow! Best, most flavorful milkshake I have had in a very long time. Mine was coffee with some chocolate syrup. My husband got raspberry chocolate, which was a raspberry base with little raspberry-filled chocolate pieces that melted creamy in your mouth. He let me try some at the bottom of his cup. We will be back next time we make this trip! It was well worth the slight detour into downtown Baker City off I-84. read more

All the locals told us to eat at Charley's and we were very impressed! Loved how they had it all decorated like country time great selection of ice cream including black licorice and some of the best salted caramel ice cream I've ever tasted fantastic Macaroni salad and split pea soup with a half a sandwich glazed ham and Swiss cheese on marble rye and to drink huckleberry lemonade the huckleberries are frozen and at the bottom of your cup it looks like a Boba drink and it was ice cold and delicious then you get the treat of eating the huckleberries at the bottom of the cup when you're done drinking your lemonade highly recommend this place read more

Stopped here for ice cream. The ladies were very nice and let us try multiple samples. I got a scoop of chocolate chip and a scoop of lemon bar. Both were so yummy! They didn't have a ton of ice cream flavors, but the ones they did have were good. I liked that they had outdoor seating as well, since the seating inside was a little more crowded. read more

This is a cute little place with a wonderful, hard working staff. After reading the reviews I decided to stop in on my way through town and grab a sandwich for lunch. The woman behind the counter, probably an owner, was very nice and friendly. With the state shutdown again for COVID, it would be easy for someone in her position to have a bad attitude. While I'm sure she's disturbed, since today is the first day of lockdown again, she doesn't let her disappointment show through. On to the food. These aren't gigantic sandwiches, and that is quite alright. It was the perfect size for my lunch. Everything is sliced fresh when you order, with a great selection of bread types to choose from. They have an abundance of ingredients and condiments to put on your sandwich, and loved that they offer to toast it as well. This was a great place to eat. You won't be disappointed. Oh. Really great sandwiches! Quick service. I got the build your own on toasted sourdough sliced bread with spinach, sprouts, mild cheddar, extra tomatoes, red onions, avocado, and a vinaigrette (or onion?) dressing! So delicious especially the texture of the bread!! It seemed homemade. Next visit we will def try your ice cream. Loved the "pine cone" bahahah--- Good humor. One suggestion is to have a bit of an easier layout of displaying the bread selections vs in bags. Maybe dry them out and display. I loved the simplicity of the choices for breads and toppings, especially build your own, yet there was enough selection to satisfy many customers. I visited Charley's a few weeks ago while on a road trip. I don't live in Oregon so am not sure what the COVID requirements are for that state. However, I was disappointed with the lack of safety protocols when I dined at Charley's. When we arrived the staff were not wearing masks. I was surprised by that, but we decided to stay. They put their masks on when we approached the counter. Gloves were not worn while preparing our food. The food seemed fresh and all tasted good. The deli also has a nice variety of options. After we sat down to eat, the staff removed their masks again. We noticed numerous customers come in without masks, and when the staff prepared those customers' food, they did not put their masks on. The staff seemed friendly and clearly have many regular customers. If the restaurant was taking COVID precautions and safety measures seriously I would've given a higher rating. read more

Most excellent little shop! We were driving thru to Portland looking for some good quality food. Meats were super fresh...sliced on the spot. All of the toppings were fresh. Continuing our assimilation into the laid back Eastern Oregon lifestyle here in Baker City, my boyfriend and I went to Charlie's for an old fashioned chocolate malt. Well, that and we miss our late night milkshake outings in Salem at the local 24 hour diners and were looking for a good replacement. (Sadly, like most of Baker, Charlie's closes rather early) Regardless of the hours of operation being somewhat narrow, Charlie's is a nice little shop right on the corner of Main Street. It has plenty of tables inside and out for sipping your old favorites or munching on a waffle cone. The two employees I have run into here are a young lady and an older gentleman, but of whom were very pleasant and both knew what a malt was. You would be surprised how many people do not know what a malt is any more. The ice cream in the freezer cases was a store bought brand. I was a little disappointed that they did not carry a local brand or, even better, something homemade. The shake produced was rich and thick, with the right amount of delicious malt added. The large is plenty to split between two people, which we did both times - even though the second time my boyfriend got a double scoop of sherbet, I still made him share the malt with me. Now that the colder weather is coming, I don't see many ice cream happening, but come summer, we'll be back! read more

I think it's incredibly rare that I get such a great impression from a business that I tell the proprietor that he/she has a great establishment. But I had to do it at Charlie's Ice Cream Parlor. There isn't an slam dunk quality to the place except the customer feels that Charlie truly wants his customers to be happy and to have a great business. The staff is very outgoing and helpful, and the shakes are topnotch. I had a fresh Cherry shake, wish I had gotten another one for the road. If I'm ever in Baker City again I hope its when this place is open. Also, this should really be in a restaurant category as well, I should know, I had a great Meatloaf sandwich and Potato salad there.
