Who knew that we would have to spend 1400.00 on round trip tickets to find the perfect buns all the way up here. #8 on the menu. May I suggest 10 of them to go at 4.95 a piece. Even with tax you will walk out with 5 meals. Thats cheaper than 1 sit down restaurant in Anchorage for 2 people. Moist, plastic wrapped to hold in the sweet steamy juice, excellent immediately and best sitting right here fresh, but exceptional left over and reheated. We had several other items on the menu, but the buns are for me. I think you will like them too. This place is always busy. Hard to find seating most of the time. The desserts are awesome, chinese food is listed on the wall by number as most places are. We have had several different things here and all was good. The BBQ pork Steam Bun is my favorite. This is probably the best place to get your lunch needs. Great dim sum and other foods. Got the sesame chicken, spicy wonton, baked bbq pork buns, and steamed pork buns. Would highly recommend getting the spicy wontons it's not super spicy but has a good kick to it. Between the baked and steam buns I think I would go with the baked ones. The store combine with bakery and order cafeteria style restaurant. We got the wonton noodle soup and the pan seared dumplings. The noodle is decent and chewy. The wonton is homemade with correct mixture of meat and spice. The pan fried dumplings is nice to fill your stomach. Price is reasonable, the food brought to table on time. Wow! I was asked to pick up Hot and Sour soup for s work companion since I was in town--a Saturday only special. I arrived about 11:40 am and the line was to the door. Luckily it gave me lots of time to look at the menu! Since I was on a mission to get the soup, and had dinner plans, I was not going to be able to get all the lovely, lovely goodies I saw on all the tables. The place smelled of heaven. I had steamed pork dumplings. I wish that I had planned this as my "meal" for Saturday--like so most of my fellow diners had. Their tabes were full of plates and more food kept coming. To go orders were leaving in droves and people just kept coming in the door! I recommend bringing a fried or two and trying lots of lots of yummy goodies. This was my first time to Charlie's Bakery, and they weren't bad. I actually would have ranked them way higher if not for the cons below, because hands down their egg custard pies are so good. These would be the only things to make me come back to visit them again. See my pros and cons below: PROS - Those Egg Custard Pies. So yummy. These would be my ONLY reason to come back here. Seriously. - I also tried their pork buns and a custard bun and they were both pretty good. CONS - Their pork siu mai. For some reason, their siu mai wasn't really tasty. I think it is the pea they have on top. It just changes the whole taste of the siu mai, and I've never had peas with mine before. - The biggest turn off was their customer service. The lady who took my order was very rude. It was my first time there, and I would never return after feeling rushed and talked down to because I said the items different. I asked if she had pork bao and she acted like she didn't know what I meant. I also asked about gyoza and she looked at me crazy and just pointed at the menu instead of helping me with what they have. We accidentally arrived here to find my daughter a birthday cake. OH MY GOODNESS I'm glad we did because their food is soooooo good and reminds me of the Asian food back home in Hawaii. The food was sooo good that I wasn't able to get a picture for my review. My parents got the beef noodle soup, spicy Szechuan dumplings, manapua's (bbq pork and the sausage, egg & cheese) and a lot more. I'll be a regular here. The food is yummy. And I was so excited to order dinner from here tonight in honor of my mom's birthday. So we get a brown take out box. When I open my eggplant with pork, the portion is small enough for me to eat the entire meal, which I typically have leftovers. It almost looks like they stole a small portion of someone's plate, who ordered at the restaurant. I mean it would be acceptable as a lunch portion. But definitely not for the price it is. Came here before work the other day, I was really craving Hawaiian kine food here in Anchorage. I ordered the Kalbi short ribs, it came with rice and sautéed vegetables (cabbage, carrots, and zucchini I believe). I also ordered a mocha cake :) The Kalbi was really good, I'm used to Hawai'i, where they give you a huge plate lunch portion, so I didn't think for the price the portion matched, but over all it was really good and I will definitely order again. Anchorages hidden gem! Owned by Chinese people. They had their steamer broken for over a month so that steamed dumplings were not available for us when we went. So we had to order the other food that was not steamed. It was actually pretty good. Deep fried pork chop is always everyone's favorite. The shrimp ball was very tasty. I didn't like the wonton noodle soup too much. But overall, I could taste authenticity and flavors in all dish. This place makes me want to go back every weekend. I also like picking up some bread before I go home. They got savory bread such as curry bun or cheese burger bread bun or BBQ pork bun. They are good cold or warmed up. SWEET! On your first trip to Charlie's bakery, be aware of two things... 1) There will be a line (it goes quickly). 2) The menu is on the wall to your right when you walk in. I felt like I didn't have enough time to fully absorb the menu to make the perfect decision in the time that it took to stand in line. As a Hail Mary, I just ordered several different dishes and figured that I would take some home to share with the parasites. The boy and I ordered four dishes off the main menu and for dishes of the dim sum menu. The one that I can remember how to pronounce is "Duck". We were given a number to put on our table and did not have to wait long for food to start showing up. It arrived in waves that the boy and I did a team sampling on. We were so excited about the food that we forgot to take photos! We spent $60 for a truly gluttonous amount of food, more than two people should be seen with. Every one of the dishes was a treat. They were skinny and mostly fat! She enjoyed taste and veggies. *Shrimp balls, shrimp packed! But so greasy it was oozing out a little after you took a bite! Taste was good to 1:2 ppl. *Puerto Rican wings, LOVED them! Perfect cook and batter, but needs sauce, there's no flavor w/out an added sauce we provided ourselves. *Shrimp Fried Rice & Pot Stickers, she loved her meal in moment of eating, but vomited immediately after. Overall I think the foods need LESS GREASY when plated to eat. Everything is good here. Seriously everything! I come ready to cry from over eating. I love the little sauce bar with chili oil. My favorite cream cheese wontons in the city. The cakes are light and creamy not too sweet and the egg tarts are intensely satisfying. Saturday's they have the sesame balls get them! They sell out often . Called in a half dozen order for those sesame delights one Saturday morning from the comfort of my nice warm bed, not even planning on getting out of bed if they where sold out. What a great little hidden gem. It's hugely popular so you might just have to wait in line. We came on a Saturday and we're pleasantly surprised to see a special Saturday menu which included Peking duck. The food here is obviously made fresh to order as everything came out super hot and fresh. The Peking duck and Sesame chicken were quite tasty and we'd order them again. The potstickers were good but a little underwhelming and the Puerto Rican Wings were just an average fried chicken wing with what tasted like a plum-based dipping sauce. Then there's the dessert case. How do you choose? Well we decided on their version of Boston Cream Pie. It was vanilla chiffon cake with a peach strawberry filling and powdered sugar top. Yum! And then there is the bread.... We tried a pepperoni cheese roll. It was still warm from the oven. The bread was tender and soft. The filling was a nice spicy pepperoni. I could have just had these for lunch and been happy. My husband's comment? "I am glad we don't live here!" Meaning, we would eat here way too often! I love it here! My husband and I had a rough day today, and wanted to get dinner to take home. We stopped into a DIFFERENT place first, that smelled awful and was filthy and we promptly left. I suggested to my husband that we stop at Charlies Bakery instead. Instantly we were SO happy. Wonderful smells greeted us, friendly staff, busy shiny clean kitchen. We stood drooling in our masks and ordered our feast: Braised noodle soup (my FAVE), the shortribs plate, pot stickers, crystal dumplings, steamed bbq pork buns, shu mai dumplings, slices of DELICIOUS strawberry pineapple cake and the famous egg tarts. I recently moved to the Anchorage area from Chicago, and I have been extremely spoiled my entire life being surrounded by an abundance of different ethnic cuisine options. I have been craving some good Chinese food for about 2 months now. I knew that I would have to do some deep research on the yelp-sphere in order to not be very disappointed. Well, my perseverance paid off with Charlie's Bakery as my experience there was all around pleasant, and tasty. We dined there on a Saturday to take advantage of the Saturday only menu. We arrived around 6:30pm for dinner, which was apparently a mistake as most of the Saturday options were no longer available. So I will have to make a return pilgrimage for an early lunch to get try the variety of items that they were out of. I also need to come back to try some more of the adventurous Chinese entrees. My husband says that he doesn't like Chinese food, and I believe this is from a lack of being exposed to good Chinese food so I am trying to ease him into the cuisine with some Americanized favorites like crab rangoon & egg rolls. Anyhow, when we arrived it was busy. There was a line to the door for ordering, and almost all the tables were full. I immediately sent my husband to stake out a table while I figured out our order. This is a place where you order at the counter, get a number, and they bring you out the food. I may have to admit that I was kind of stressing myself out with what to order as I pretty much wanted everything. The woman working the register was friendly and efficient in getting my order in. My order consisted of egg rolls, crab rangoon, steamed pork dumplings, spicy shrimp won tons, pot stickers, house fried rice, and roast duck. Our food came out hot, and in a timely fashion. Everything was really cooked well. Nothing was greasy, or sticky sweet with sauce. The egg rolls, crab rangoon and pot stickers were very lightly crisped, and were not drenched in oil. The steamed pork dumplings were excellent. The dumpling was warm and soft, and the inside the pork was moist and flavorful. My favorite dish was the spicy shrimp won tons. The won tons were very well prepared, and the sauce was just amazing. I could have eaten a giant bowl of just the won tons they were that good. It was a flavor explosion. Another stand out was the fried rice. It had a really good smokey flavoring to it, and an ample amount of shrimp as well as pieces of pork. Again this entree was not greasy at all, and had great flavor. We also really enjoyed the sauce on the roast duck though I thought the piece we were given was kind of fatty, and I really would have preferred it be de-boned a bit more than it was. We were informed that it was the last duck they had in house so that could have certainly been a factor. Everything we tried was tasty, and we enjoyed out dinner here. I think I am finally convincing my husband that Chinese can be a really great cuisine. Even though we were very full after dinner we could not resist trying the desserts after looking at the display case. We took a slice of chocolate cheese (layers of chocolate cake and marscapone cheese frosting), and an egg tart to go. Both desserts were really good. I was actually really surprised that Charlie's could pull off both desserts and Chinese food well as it is such an odd restaurant combo. All in all we were very satisfied with our meal, and left full. There was even some leftover fried rice for the next day's lunch. I will be back to try more entrees, and we will also come for dim sum one day as this seems to be the only dim sum place in town. Still the best Chinese in town despite having microwaved veggies and steamed buns. I suppose it's the fasted way to heat up food and I just need to get over my weird thing about microwaves in restaurants used to heat up food that you pay more money for than you would just to do it at home. On another note... I recommend trying out the Saturday menu because they serve an assortment of delicious Chinese dishes. My favorites are the ginger chicken and spicy chicken salad. The scallion cake is a delicious appetizer if you want to try something that isn't a dumpling. Their kalbi is tender but the relish on the side tasted strange and was unappetizing. I really like their wonton soup for cold winter days and I still enjoy the eggplant dish- it is just a little too oily for my taste. Really, anything you get is good. So I absolutely LOVE the baked goods here at Charlie's!! Every single thing in the dessert case is fantastic. Their baked buns with various items inside are wonderful as well. Charlie's is the only place in Anchorage that I am aware of that actually does Dim Sum and it's not bad. The steamed dumplings and shu-Mai are quite tasty as well. I have not tried there other Chinese dishes so I can not attest one way or another. But if you want an amazing cake, pineapple cheesecake, or really yummy baked items please try this little spot out! read more

All were good, but I was really disappointed that except for the spicy szechuan dumplings, nothing came with any sauce. You have to ask for disposable containers and make your own sauce from the soy, rice vinegar, chili and sriracha on the counter. Dumpling sauce is half of what makes dumplings so great! If I knew how to make my own, I wouldn't be getting take out! And while everything was good, nothing was extraordinary, and really, nothing was any better than what I can get in the frozen section at Walmart - for less money. read more
