The Charlie's experience was the worst customer service ever. My wife and I stopped in just past the lunch rush hour with only a few patrons inside. Wanted to try this place for the first time. Left unacknowledged at the seating counter for 10 minutes before wife called out hello twice before a living soul ever appeared. Finally seated and each served a single glass of tea. Another 20 minutes passed, no one had ever come to even take our order. At this point we decided to just pay for the tea and leave, ironically a waitress appeared and now she was very quick to bring us a $6 ticket for the outrageous privilege of it all. Atmosphere 2/5: I will start out by saying that the decor in Charlie's was nice and the booth seat was clean. We were greeted by a server who came by and got our drink orders. Waters were delivered in a timely fashion on this hot summer day. He took our order when he came back with the waters and we ordered the eggceptional burger with fries, the dirty south turkey sandwich, fried pickles and fried mushrooms (yes, that is a lot of fried food, but there were 4 of us sharing these appetizers.) Service 1/5: Once we ordered our food, we didn't get our appetizers until about 15 minutes of sitting at the table chatting. We get our fried pickles and mushrooms, and they're both good. The hand battered fried mushrooms were actually surprisingly very good and I don't love mushrooms. They were $8 and came with 8 mushrooms in the little metal cone shaped dish. Not a super good value at $1 per fried mushroom, but the batter was really good and the shrooms were juicy. After we finished our appetizers, we waited another 20 minutes to get our burger and sandwich. Not once did our server or anybody come by and tell us our food will be out shortly or sorry for the wait. We just sat there patiently waiting, which was fine because we were catching up and lots to talk about, however, we were also starving after helping our brother and pregnant sis-in-law move prior to lunch. I'm not sure if they were training somebody's 13 year old son, but a boy, literally no older than 13, came and delivered our meals silently. He didn't say a word, he just held the meal and looked at all of us to try to determine whose meal it was. It was very awkward and we were like who lost their child?? Food 1/5 I had the dirty south turkey sandwich. Which, in the menu, is described as, "Our fiery version of an old favorite! Served on Texas toast with pepper jack cheese, fried jalapeños, leaf lettuce, tomato, and our homemade Tabasco ranch sauce. That sounds absolutely delicious, right?!! Our sandwich comes out and the first thing I notice is that it's a club sandwich, which was NO WHERE mentioned in the description- meaning, there is an extra slice of bread in the middle of the sandwich. The bread was also not Texas toast, it was regular white bread. But sure, an extra slice of bread would be fine if this was a fully loaded sandwich. However, upon inspecting this sandwich, I thought somebody was pranking me. I frick you not, it was ONE thin slice of DELI meat turkey between the top part of the two breads and another in the bottom portion, one slice of cheese that was definitely not pepper jack, one thinly sliced tomato, a wilted piece of lettuce, chopped up fried jalapeño pieces, and the special sauce. I can't even begin to tell you the level of disappointment I felt while eating this extremely sad sandwich that we waited 35 minutes for. The sauce on it was good, I will say. Gave it the moisture this dry af sandwich needed with 3 MF slices of bread. I actually removed the middle slice of bread and it made the sandwich even sadder looking, but at least I wasn't eating 80% bread for a sandwich. Onion rings- ok. What was I expecting, you ask? I'm not sure, but I imagined "our fiery version of an old favorite" meant real turkey and not deli meat, and certainly at least an equal amount of slices to the bread. How tf you gonna give me 3 slices of bread but 2 slices of turkey?! I'm honestly pissed thinking about how money and my stomach space was wasted on this awful meal. My bro/SIL like the burgers here, which was my mistake, so I will own that (obvi it's an old fashioned burger joint, I know that was stupid of me). If you've made it this far in my review, thanks for being here. TL;DR- Don't ever order the dirty south turkey sandwich. It will quite literally do you dirty. Stick to the burgers, but only if you care to wait 30+ minutes for it and you don't care about time and lack of decent service. I read prior that they were closed for a while and couldn't get their together, but upon reopening, should've just stayed closed if they couldn't improve their business. Overall, the service and food in my own experience was poor. For my family that ordered the burger- their burger was said to be great, but service was still awful. The food is some of the best in the area. Well made, delicious and always comes out nice and hot! The service is stellar, and has always been amazing. I've always had good servers who take into account my dietary needs and who are knowledgeable. If they don't have an answer for me, the staff is great about finding out. They seem to work well together! On top of that... the ambiance is laid back and fun. The vibe is nice, and the decor is welcoming and country! It has also always been very clean. This last visit in particular is what made me crack and write this review though. Our server, Peyton, went above and beyond to answer all my questions, make sure the order was correct, and keep tabs on us. She checked on us regularly and kindly. I have been visiting my parents in Rockwall just a couple of stone throws away from Royse city, I've been coming up here for several years to help my parents. And lately I've been venturing further away from Rockwall looking for a new variety and better food. several visits ago I quit shopping at the Walmart in Rockwall and started shopping at the Royse city location. It was new and it seems like they always had everything in stock. So I was heading to the Walmart in Royce Street city to pick up a few items and I realize that I was a little hungry and tired swing in to Charlie's old fashioned burgers. It was reminiscent because one of my families favorite hamburger places in Houston when we were growing up in the 70s and 80s was Charlie's old fashioned hamburgers, they had great hamburgers, fresh cut fries and absolutely the best fresh cut onion rings in the world... This place fell a little short, actually a whole lot short, the only thing that saved them and got two stars from me, was the fact that their hopping jalapeño burger was excellent!!!! The meat was cooked perfectly with the right amount of char and still very juicy. The fried jalapeños on it and Jack cheese were a nice touch. I was smart and asked for the jalapeño ranch sauce on the side and when I tasted it, I tasted no jalapeño it was just ordinary ranch dressing in my opinion. To my disappointment the french fries were pre-frozen and not the home cut that I had hoped for. Seeing how everyone was running around with shirts that said "home cooking away from home"... I did not see much evidence of home cooked away from home on this visit, but all I had was a burger and fries. I was sitting in the bar and it seem like they were training a couple of new people because two of them came back and forth in and out of the bar a couple of times before they even acknowledged me and asked if there was anything they could get for me. I said... a menu and a glass of water with limes... which I got. It took a while before one of them came back and asked if I was ready to place an order I asked a couple of questions and I placed my order for their Hoppin jalapeño burger with french fries. Thinking that it was almost 5 o'clock, and I was in a bar and I saw that they had mosaic IPA on tap which is one of my favorite beers up here. I asked her if they had any beer happy hour specials because they had a sign there with the happy hour specials but it seemed to be mostly well drinks and wine. But she looked at me and said nope happy hour was over... I looked at her and I said it's not even 5 o'clock yet... And she said yeah our happy hour is from 2 to 5... Really, doesn't anybody work here in Royse city? Now granted being from Houston happy hours vary from place to place, but most of them start anywhere from 3 to 5 and go till 6 or 7.... I think most are still working at five so it's hard to get out at 2 o'clock to start having a good time.... She eventually turned to me and said you still have time to get a $2.50 Bud Light... I haven't drank light beer in a long time, and after all I already had a glass of water. I looked at her and said no thanks I'll stay with the water with limes, thank you. I watched the local news and the Sweden hockey game and watched her train one of the new girls behind the bar. The place was not crowded, there was a couple behind me in one of the booths, who must've been regulars because she checked on them a couple of times. She brought out my plate and the burger looked good, like I said it was definitely the highlight of my visit to this establishment. but I have to tell you I will be going back to Joe Willy's in Rockwall for hamburgers from here on. The burgers are just as good but the onion rings are excellent, and the home cut fries are good as well. Had everything gone better on this visit I may have been back to try something else, as like I said the burger was good and they may have had good food but the service was so poor... I doubt if they'll get the chance to prove it. I know a lot of people blame the pandemic for a lot of restaurants that have changed.... Having to raise there prices to keep up with the rising cost of their food, supplies and labor.... But so many are charging more for smaller portions and less quality food because they are not buying the same quality of ingredients they did pre-pandemic. all of this added together with nickel and diming for every little extra that you might ask for is going to run people off. And like me find out they can eat a whole lot cheaper at home and better as well... Quality is hard to find, and I think that has influenced this restaurant to fall a little short of the mark. read more

All in all bad experience. Ordered via Uber eats and order was mostly wrong. Didn't eat it and they were closed so went there the next day and they remade it. Pros: the shift manager that helped us was super friendly, professional, and polite. They are lucky to have her. She's the only reason I'm upgrading my review to 2 stars. Cons: Not getting the order remotely right the first time. Snarky response to review making it sound like I can't order- when your menu says your burgers are served with veggies, they shouldn't come plain. Customers shouldn't have to scroll/click/specify etc if it says "served with". See picture. Don't offer medium, medium well, well done if your staff can't cook it that way. We ordered medium well, and the first ones were charred beyond belief and the remade ones were rare and completely raw in the middle. See picture. As far as going back in person, it probably made it worse from the observations- While waiting for the remade food, which took over 30 minutes, multiple people came in and waited forever to be greeted. A 15 top was turned away because they were told they could only seat big parties of a maximum of 10 people. And the pie in the display case looked curdled and like it had been sitting in there for days. You eat with your eyes first so maybe it tasted good but looks wise it was super off putting. Also an Uber eats driver that was waiting on his order has to point out multiple missing items, so I guess getting orders wrong on delivery is a chance you take eating here. But I guess my biggest complaint would be that the food just wasn't good. The potato skins were bland and overcooked. The burgers (even if they weren't raw) just didn't have much flavor, and the one tiny piece of soggy lettuce made it all just mushy. Normally I don't like to write bad reviews much because I understand everyone has a bad day sometimes, but the review response person said they wanted to hear the honest feedback so they can make changes, and I hope they will. Also, I don't feel at all that anything was "made right" for me because the remade food still has serious flaws (raw meat) and I'm still out the Uber surcharges (I asked for a refund but was told they could only remake my food). read more

We started our order with drinks and friendly service from our waiter Bryon, and then ordered a combo appetizer with fried mushrooms, pickles and cheese. The fried cheese were shaped like shark teeth! So cute! Then our burgers came.. I'm not a huge fan of BBQ but I figured I'd give it a shot. Did. Not. Disappoint. An absolutely fantastic burger. The BBQ sauce smelled just irresistible. This place is a must stop. I don't rave about places often but this.. I will definitely be coming back.
