My husband and I used to frequent Charlie's in Perrysburg often. We have been to all locations over the years. This location is hit or miss with service and food. I think they understaffed for rush hours and often don't open their extra seating when it's needed. The wait staff has seemed frazzled enough times that I have been in there. I'm sad. One of my childhood buddies came to town last minute. My mistake thinking to take her to a Toledo owned spot. I'm not from Toledo so I have no allegiance. Right off the bat the server was rude. My man asked for a bloody Mary. She said no. No reason or nothing. Finally she says when we are looking lik we may get up n leave she says we don't do alcohol on Sunday. OK cool. Wonder why the parking lot has 4 cars. We were 2 couples and we tried to make the best of it. She came with my man's salad on a saucer n she threw it on the table so hard it almost fell off the saucer it was on. My man put hands on me because it was about to be a minute. She didn't want to be there and it was def not our fault. Food was bad. I mean everyone left most of their food on the plate bad. Who messes up sausage gravy. I don't know what meat was in there. The breakfast potatoes were the only good thing. We got club sandwich, burgers, fries, and club sandwich. Nobody liked it. I was so embarrassed. This is my town right? Worst part. My man left his house work phone. He was told it was in the safe. Only the manager can open. He showed up the next day to get it, no problem. Huge value here I would definitely recommend, considering food prices everywhere recently, and it was delicious and healthy. What really stood out to me was the tomatoes! Tastes like homegrown vine-ripened! It stands out because there's so many restaurants and groceries selling bland gross tomatoes lol. I felt a bit sorry for the staff at breakfast this morning, one waitress handling a pretty full house. Wanted to offer her a pair of roller stakes. Ignored her demeaner as it was completely understandable given the situation, not rude just focused I guess. However, there are two points I'd like to make; one - why do many restaurants no longer give you a receipt, they have already printed it, just leave it, espically if the customer has paid cash. Which brings me to the second; when did waitstaff train and take on mob tactics, extortion in particular. Lately, everytime I pay with cash with the deliberate attempt to get broken change, they bring me back larger bills so I'm forced to leave a larger tip, in many cases, larger than they deserve. I ordered the fried chicken salad, minus most of the veggies with honey mustard dressing.we were on our way home from vacation and wanted drinks with lunch. they appear to have a full bar. I got my seltzer and om had wine. the salad was good, appears to have been plain old iceberg lettuce, exactly the way I want it. I couldn't eat it all, lots of chicken left. it was very good. This just might be the cheapest-bestest breakfast in town. The deal is that if you pay for your coffee (or pop, or Bloody Mary, or breakfast stout), you get your breakfast entree for half price! Yes. You pay for the cheaper item, and get the more expensive item for half price. I'm not sure about the profit model, but you can count me in! The omelettes are big and well made, and that's enough for me. They come with two slices of toast. Potatoes, which I don't eat that much of anyhow, are extra. Keep 'em. Authenticity? I'm Greek, and I'm here to tell you that the food is good, but it's not authentic. 'nuff said. That being said, in spite of the word "Taverna" being in its name, and in spite of "Charlie" himself being Greek, this is not a Greek restaurant. It's a Coney Island. Understand the difference. If you want authentic Greek food, you're going to have a hard time finding it in Toledo. You want a Chicago dog, go elsewhere. If you want a Detroit inspired coney dog, however, come to Charlie's and enjoy an excellent one. Chili mac? There're better options in this town. My personal favorite lunch/dinner item is the large "gyro salad, Greek style." Basically, it's just a BAGSWGM...LOI (big ass Greek salad with gyro meat...lots of it). It's excellent, and it gives you plenty of bang for your buck. Very good Greek dressing, too. Then, there's the "Taverna." Draft (and craft) beer served in a Coney Island warrants 5 stars right there. There's a small but full selection of liquor (no ouzo? WTF?) Charlie also serves wine. If I felt inclined to take off a star, it would be for the service. It's frequently slow. BUT, it's never so bad that I'd consider not coming back. read more

My husband and I had lunch there today, and we got seated and served right away. He ordered a (very expensive) bowl of chicken noodle soup, which was pretty ordinary. I ordered the Mac & Cheese daily special. The side salad was good, but the M&C was pretty bad. There were no seasonings and no nice baked-on crumb topping. Normally I'm happy with Charlie's but a word of caution, don't order the Rubin sandwich. From the thick slicing of the corn beef which looked liked they grilled it. To the sauerkraut or lack of, to the undersize bread that was used it's just wasn't a good sandwich. Add plate presentation or lack of I think you'll be satisfied with another selection. My friend ordered Titos tall, it was $7 when I questioned the waitress she said tall means a double and she doesn't make the prices- and that's for bourbon. This is just a good, stable restaurant. I can always count on having consistently good food and service. The owner is a very kind man (I don't know his name) - but he is often on hand to welcome customers and to high-five my grandchildren. My wife and I brought our two grandsons (aged 3 and 4) here recently, and they gobbled everything up (when you are that age ketchup makes everything better!). I come here often and although the food isn't gourmet, it's always fresh, delicious, and fast! I couldn't believe it...it took about 6 minutes from the time we ordered to get our wonderful food -- always appreciated when you have impatient young little mouths to feed. read more

Hands down just a terrible experience. Ordered takeout--the woman taking the order was incredibly rude and hung up while I was asking her to read back the order to make sure it was right. Called back and she was curt. One out of three orders was wrong. Wouldn't be as upset if she was more polite. I know how things are lately and everyone is short staffed, but we are choosing to support this business and should at least be treated nicely for doing so. The wife and I visited on a Friday evening, after arriving in Maumee. It was a great local restaurant and looked good for family dining. I ordered liver and onions, which not too many restaurants offer. It was delicious. The wife tried a fish dinner that she thought was great. She had some left over, so we took it with us to snack on later in the evening. Our wait staff (Angelica) was wonderful. She visited us several times, after serving the meal and joined us in general conversation as time permitted. Stopped at Charlie's this morning with hubs, sister, brother in law and nephews family from Georgia. They all stopped here yesterday and the kids voted to come back today since they "loved" the French Toast. Besides the French toast, pancakes, sausage, omelettes, breakfast skillets ordered, I ordered a lite selection of poached eggs, Canadian bacon, muffin and a side of tomato slices with a plate of strawberries, grapes and cantaloupe. Very healthy but most importantly it was extremely fresh and tasty! At the time we were there it was fairly busy with a holiday group in a larger room but our food came quickly and our coffees, pop and apple juice was filled when needed. A great spot for breakfast or weekend brunch. If you come in before 11 am on weekend you get half-off certain breakfast items when you order a drink. Another plus is the full bar and local craft beer selection. The Greek food is also pretty good here with hefty portions and great prices. I typically eat her every couple of months, as I love their menu and this is probably the nicest Charlie's in the city of Toledo. This location has a very modern vibe to it and includes a full bar and patio area. The menu is pretty much the same as any of the other locations offering burgers, wings, gyros, soups, pies, and other typical diner food. They also offer a massive room to book for larger parties, which my family has taken advantage of on several occasions. The only reason I'm taking a few stars off my review is the service I've experienced at this location. It is really hit or miss, but typically it is not good. There was actually one time I stopped there for breakfast with four other people and after waiting 15+ minutes for a waitress, we just left. There have been other times the servers just don't stop by your table for extended periods of times. I've felt that their service has gotten better the last few times I've been there, but not sold yet that this issue is completely fixed. read more

2-parter here: After complaining about my ecig upon the mere sight of it, the waitress then took 15 minutes to take our order, even though there were only 3 other customers. Food was a solid 2/5. This was 2 weeks ago. TODAY, after another lengthy wait to be waited on, we were given what appeared to be the coldest, most hastily-cobbled-together eggs Benedict I've ever seen. After having remade it, or as normal human beings say 'MICROWAVED IT' they immediately brought it back out, like we don't know how long it takes to poach an egg, and we just asked to have it taken off the bill, the waitress told us that the manager said NOT to take it off of the bill. We then asked to speak to the manager. The waitress returned with an updated bill and a remark that 'the manager didn't want to come out' at our request. Then we had to stand around waiting for someone to take our payment when this dude is lucky that we paid at ALL. To the manager at the Tollgate location in Maumee: I wasn't gonna chew you out in public. I just wanted to ask how much mustard was in your hollandaise sauce and why you expected us to pay you almost $50 for it. If customers ask to see you, do your job and manage your restaurant. If you're not going to do that, at least have the decency to serve good food. If those dishes were burnin down the mainframe, I'd take some flak on my complaint, but you literally charge people good money for some chili sauce slopped onto microwaved spaghetti noodles. Charlie's has a few Greek items on the menu, because like many coney islands, it's owned by Greeks. The focus is on (excellent) chili dogs, and (fast, good, and cheap) breakfast. And on those fronts, Charlie's does a great job. As a bonus, they also have a few craft beers on tap, and a full (but limited) bar. Had a great lunch today with friends. Choices were country skillet breakfast, eggs, bacon and hash browns, Greek chicken chunks grilled (added a side of pita), spinach salad, chef salad and a bowl of vegetable soup. Everyone was pleased with portion size and taste. Three of us took leftovers home. The only complaint is that our entrees came out at different times, two, then three then the final order. Our coffee and iced teas were kept full. We stayed and talked after finishing and were never rushed or given the eye to leave. Menu is vast, breakfast served all day. Greek Food is amazing. We were just passing through on the highway, pulled off for dinner, was looking for a different place but ended up here. Wow, were we glad we did. Excellent value. I had a terrific burger with a "side"!! of Skyline-type chili (without the clove). Wife had a salad that twas huge, and she loved it. I also had a 22 oz beer. The bill came, and we thought they'd made a mistake it was so low--$26. Service was great.
