Had a great experience at Charlton Tavern recently. The place has a real historic feel, with walls full of Irish history, photos, and sayings that give it a ton of character. The food absolutely delivered. The chicken wings had that perfect crunch in every bite, and everything we ordered was on point, the pasta lovers (chicken and shrimp over penne), the chicken stack with eggplant, and the wings were all excellent. What stood out just as much was the service. Even though the place was packed, it still felt cozy, and the staff never missed a beat. Drinks were never empty, and you could tell the team is well-trained and dialed in. The owner was right there in the mix, delivering food, making drinks, and greeting customers. That kind of presence says a lot about a place. Nice touch on the way out too, being thanked for coming. It's simple, but it sticks. Definitely a spot worth going back to! I've heard good things about the Charlton Tavern and was in the neighboring area for farm fresh produce. It was mid to late afternoon, so not quite dinner time. Luckily they were open so I could grab a bite. It's located in the historic town of Charlton and the place is quaint with a welcoming cozy feel. This would be a nice gathering place in colder months, as the stone fireplace is a major attraction as you walk in. For my snack, I had the classic calamari, the tavern poutine along with a grilled vegetable salad to share. I figured I would balance out my cheat day with some vegetables haha. It all came together quickly, and the wait wasn't bad. The portion size here is very shareable. My favorite by far was the tavern poutine as the breaded cheese curds and house made gravy with bacon really hits the spot. The calamari was a little on the chewy side and not as tender as I'd hoped. I would definitely pass on it. The grilled salad was presented nicely but had a ton of creamy balsamic on it. I would make a mental note to ask for dressing on the side. I personally am not a fan of overly dressed greens as I prefer them crisp. It wasn't bad, but not something I'd order again. My fiancé and I have been here a few times together now and are never disappointed. For our anniversary, they helped him surprise me with flowers by allowing him to drop them off the day before, and then they displayed them for us when we got there for our reservation. They included free dessert with our meal as well. Their portions are huge, and the flavors are so unique and delicious. Their starter bread is so fluffy and tasty. A garden salad with their special bacon dressing is out of this world. It is worth every penny, and the staff is so lovely! read more

What I love most about this place is how historic it is! It has been around forever! It is located in a super sweet little historic village and I love that so much! It is beautiful and quaint on the inside and I love how they decorate it for all the different seasons! I have eaten here a few times and have gotten take out from here as well. The servers are always very nice. The food is okay. They have a good amount of options but otherwise it is pretty standard quality pub food. Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. The place was busy but not packed. We were sat at a high top near the bar and the waitress came over immediately to get our drink order. They have a great selection of craft beer, so we opted for two pints of craft beer. We also ordered medium wings as an appetizer and they were delicious - perfect amount of crisp, well sauced and good size too. For entrees, I ordered the turkey sandwich and my boyfriend ordered the roast beef. Both were really good - stuffed with meat and the bread well toasted. The fries were mediocre in my opinion. Well it has been a ritual for the last 5 years but this last time we can find a new place for the get together with the kids if you can call the 40 yr old a kid. We combine it with chopping down the Christmas tree. The place is just plain loud which is no fault of theirs however the food comes out about room temp which is terrible for French fries. Our first time visiting here. Wow what an amazing place. It is all decorated for the holiday season. Our server, Kevin was very attentive and professional. We arrived just before 5 PM with no reservations and were sat at a table. Shortly after 5:30 PM on the place was filled up. We ordered a steak dinner, a baked haddock dinner and the salmon dinner. Made reservations that were given away as we were waiting to be seated. Parking was super packed and I had to wait 10+ minutes for a spot and when we got our food the prime rib was tough and the mashed potatoes were cold and I feel microwave reheated. The atmosphere was quiet @ first and progressively got so loud we couldn't carry on a conversation without yelling to the people at the table. The waitress was very friendly, although seemed like her first night by the way she took orders. The French onion soup was delicious though not hot enough (temperature wise). Haddock sandwich/w FF was just ok especially since it was cold when it got to the table. Southwest chicken sandwich/w onion rings was very tasty accept cold when it got to the table and the onion rings were so greasy! Not pictured were the stuffed mushrooms which were less than delicious. Over all the restaurant prices are very high for the less than delicious, cold, greasy food. The waitress was very friendly, patient and accommodating! Bar tender should pay more attention when N/A beer is requested especially since N/A request was for medical reasons! Then they charged us for their mistake. Probably won't return here any time soon! Better local restaurants that are better priced and put out much better food. read more

Stepping in from a wet cold night into this cozy warm atmosphere of the revolutionary era tavern- we were embraced by the hospitality and the beautiful festive Easter decor and a lively din that was friendly and comforting. It was easy to have a conversation and the ambience was just properly lighted and was fitted for families of eight or for date night cozy table for two. The Irish tradition is weaved beautifully throughout from flags of Dublin on the ceiling and shamrock lightbulbs and in the ladies room wallpaper with Celtic themes. There a proper Irish drafts including Guinness and Harp which won me over immediately. In addition there are craft beers and signature cocktails. Service was efficient and friendly and informative. There were specials and portions were plentiful. Everything was made fresh and served hot I enjoyed a homemade NE clam chowder where the potatoes were perfectly done and serve piping hot. There's a basket of fresh artisan bread although it's not housemaid it was perfect complement and not to be missed. Order Any of the salads with a warm bacon dressing as you rarely see this anymore and it was delicious. The shrimp scampi Florentine was plentiful and beautifully presented with a mixture of vegetables shrimp sun-dried tomatoes and pasta. They had honey Sriracha firecracker cauliflower which was very crisp and well battered and very tasty as an appetizer as well. My companion had the wings which was excellent it was crispy and the sauce was perfectly balanced served with celery and blue cheese. I would also recommend the blue crabcakes which were delightfully presented to good size cakes as an appetizer with lemon and lettuce and a remoulade underneath they were very tasty and thick and consistent. read more

Finally made our way to Charlton Tavern. Incredibly homey. Loved the atmosphere and see why it's a full house on a Thursday night. The Vibe is cozy and inviting. Bar is top notch. (They know what they're doing!) Restaurant can host Big parties or quaint tables - a high top which suited our party nicely. Options for food are great. For dinner, My house special choice was a little different ... showed up with fried shrimp on the salad....but tasted fine... & other platters were as expected - delicious! Had some friends from out of town and thought we would take them to a charming tavern for a nice dinner. we reserved a table days in advance and the table they reserved was in a main traffic area so we moved to a table off the busy path of patrons and servers. Appetizers were artichoke dip and calamari. Calamari must have came out of a US foods or Cysco frozen bag not a tentacle insight and the dip was about the same. Entrees ordered were chicken sorrento , seafood pasta chicken special and 2 prime ribs dinners. Typically prime rib does not have grill marks its roasted, however i imagine they were roasted on friday and then reheated on the grill . desserts included chocolate Mousse, Taverns bread pudding and the smallest sliver of key lime pie imaginable. Mousse was very good , bread pudding was very dry. Needless to say we will be going elsewhere after a very disappointing dining experience. We stopped in here for lunch on our way from Howe Caverns to Lake George. This place is great. Very cool decor and friendly service. Everything we ordered tasted fresh and delicious. Kids menu was a bonus. Everyone was happy with their lunch from salads to quiche to sandwiches. I would definitely dine here again if I'm in the area. Recommend giving this one a try. read more

Overall the food here is pretty consistent and very good. Having a bar in the dining room can always lean towards being problematic as the volume at the bar is usually higher. The staff is pleasant but not so great if you are sitting at the bar, as they gather for their drink orders at the service bar, and are not always having appropriate conversations for patrons to have to hear. We went on a Friday night around 8 and were seated right away by a friendly host. The young lady serving water was prompt, but never came back to us again, she stood in the center of the main floor twirling a towel for a good long time, just looking around aimlessly. Our server was quick with our drink order, great beer menu, no wine menu but it is a tavern so it was fine. We both ordered prime rib 12 oz for $36, which I assume is around a fair price. Salad was a nice spring mix with tomatoes, cucumber and carrots. Our main course came quickly, came with a house made horseradish sauce which I forgot to remover from mine, but it turned out to be alright. Rice was dry and bland. Veggies were good. Mashed potatoes were good and I should have gotten them. Prime rib was grilled, very fatty and flavorless. Wanted medium and it was on the well side with only the very center being pink as I like it. I could not eat it. I ordered a ham and cheese on sourdough which was awesome! We weren't charged for one of the prime ribs, which I didn't expect as we did take it home for our dog. We would go back but would maybe choose sandwich's over beef. One thing I would like owners to know though. One of the servers was sweeping the floor and cleaning tables with spray cleaner right around our table while we were eating. I doubt many diners enjoyed this. read more

I just love this place. Friendly service and the food is excellent. I've been here about 5 times now and I haven't had anything less than delicious. Every time we visit our family who lives in nearby Malta we ask to come here. Most recently, I got the prime rib. It was so tender. There wasn't a "chewy" bit on it. Just excellent. We ordered shrimp cocktail for appetizer and it too was just really fresh and delicious. Our server was very friendly and consistently on top of everything. Trying to support local and this looked inviting while driving by. Well...I was not impressed. I ordered the special: Pasta with grilled chicken, sausage and local vegetables. It was good...but the quality of the chicken was poor. You could tell the grilled chicken was not freshly grilled, maybe even frozen. It was grilled in a way you could tell it was recycled. It was a major bummer as the dish had so much potential. This dish came with a salad and the asked for the house dressing. First of all, who has a warm dressing on salads?? It was some bacon thing that was more like a gravy on the already wilted lettuce salad. Just no. My boyfriend had the fish and mac. He said the mac was good and the fried fish was crispy. The atmosphere seems a local place that people frequent. I need to try some other dishes. Several other reviewers noted it's inconsistent. I think that is the trend I see here. For the prices, there should be more care in their dishes. A note about the location-the drive way (good size sharp rocks) is not paved and slopes...watch the shoes you wear. I wore sandals and it was a hot mess situation. It is handicapped accessible, but i see disaster in the dark and during winter! read more

The ambiance is very warm and cozy, and the place is beautifully decorated no matter the season. However, I have to give this place only 3 stars (more like 2.5) because - aside from the atmosphere - the food and service is just "eh." I have had two separate dinners here. One was pretty adequate (a pork schnitzel dish), which led me to come back, but the second was very inedible (a fall/harvest pasta dish). Way too much cheese! To the point it was sickening. For the love of good food people, throwing a ridiculous amount of cheese on something does not necessarily make it taste better! Do not get me wrong- I absolutely adore cheese - but not at the risk of masking the (hopefully) equally delicious other components of the meal. This seems to be a very common rural/non-metro problem. Sorry, but putting excessive cheese on something seems like an easy cover-up regarding bad cooking. Having grown up in the nyc-long island metro area, with its plethora of restaurants, I can say that most places in the Albany region that are 4 stars are really only 3 stars in food quality and service. Adequate, but nothing special. Go to them for a decent lunch, but not a special dinner - including this one. P.S. Service was pretty slow both times as well. Also no wine list. read more

Now that the location of this restaurant has been corrected, hopefully others will not have a problem getting here by GPS. I've been here a few times over the past 30 years, both pre-fire and post-fire. While the "old" character was lost in the fire, the totally rebuilt building still has a rustic-ness that will serve it well for many years to come. We arrived about 7 pm on a Wednesday night and there wasn't a single parking place left in their private lot. Lucky for us some of the early diners were just leaving and we were able to take one of their spots. Considering all the cars in the lot, the place was only about 2/3 full. The noise level inside is rather high. There is nothing to absorb the sound of people laughing and enjoying themselves as the sound bounces off all the rough hewn timber. It would seem that in addition to a number of "regulars" who dine here, there were also "former regulars." I say this because as we were greeted by the host (maybe owner) another party of two came in behind us and got big hugs and a loudly exclaimed greeting while were were asked to wait while the host seated this couple. After we were seated at our table, another couple came in and got the same warm greeting as the couple behind us. During the course of our dinner, there were numerous other occasions of customers arriving or leaving and seeing and hugging other customers like it was a high school reunion. These are truly friendly people who congregate here. Staff also seem warm and friendly. Our server joked with me when I had her confirm that I thought I heard her say one of the choices for dressing was hot-bacon. She commented that she noticed my mouth start to drool when she mentioned it. We started with a couple pints of beer ($5 ea.) and mushroom caps ($7.25) stuffed with sharp cheddar cheese, savory sausage and vegetable dressing. I believe there were 5 good sized caps and a very tasty filling. My salad was delivered at the same time as the appetizer so I didn't notice right away that the dressing-on-the-side might not have been what I ordered. When I did taste it, I realized that I had been given blue cheese dressing. While I kept an eye out for our waitress to let her know, we had now finished the app and I decided to simply eat the salad as delivered since blue cheese would have otherwise been my choice. By the time our waitress did reappear I had finished the salad and she was now serving a table of 7 not far from ours. My wife ordered a Coners Fireside Burger ($8.25) with cheese (+$.75) and sauteed mushrooms (+$.75). It was properly cooked to the requested medium rare, came on an artisan roll that tasted like a sweet roll, and also came with lettuce, tomato,coleslaw, a pickle and french fries. My wife decided to eat the 8 oz. Angus beef without the roll. The burger was good enough that I'd return here just for that. I ordered one of the nightly specials - a stuffed roast pork roulade with prosciutto, some bitter leafy greens and crumbled cheese (maybe goat) ($19.95). It came with sliced vegetables (carrots, zucchini and summer squash) and I chose mashed potatoes instead of rice. While the outer edges of the pork roll were just a bit dry, the inner portion was not over cooked and quite tender. This was a large enough portion that I brought home two slices of the pork roll and some vegetables and potato. We had just enough room left for coffee ($2 ea.) and dessert. The lemon cream filled cake ($5.95) that we shared was actually worth the drive. The menu is large and diverse enough that there is something for just about everyone. I expect that we'll be returning to explore more of it. read more

The mark up on the craft beer can is questionable even in this market. My Coachmen's Melt was purportedly served on a brioche roll or some better roll than the Freihofer's burger bun straight from the bag. Sure, kitchens run out. Share this with the clientele. Not all taps were advertised, and my draft Pilsner's line tasted as though a cleaning is in order. Attentive service, and the cole slaw and sweet potato waffle fries were fine. read more

I had a bit of a tough time choosing a meal, especially with the pricing (fair but higher). I had a burger and it was okay. I expected better. I'd asked for it well done, but it was unevenly cooked. The bun and toppings were only OK. The fries were good. I wouldn't make a stink if people wanted to eat here, but I wouldn't seek it out, either. read more

This place got me as soon as I was seated. The hustle and bustle was a tad much but once seated the warm welcome feeling came back. Beautiful decor and soft warm nights made this cold night melt quickly. I can't wait to see it decorated for Christmas because thanksgiving decorations were great and inviting. ( When we went back 3 days later with my daughter they were very busy and the service suffered. ) My husband and I had the Ribeye. Cooked perfect! I love a great rare steak and this was rare ! Choose the calamari for appetizer. Comes with salad. Went with double veggie instead of potato ! When I took my daughter a few nights later I had the prime rib special and it was great, except I forgot to tell them no horse radish sauce which I hate but that was my fault. All and all I like the atmosphere and ambiance. They need a good hostess at the front station to keep things at a better pace, and to stop repeat calls on the phone in my book. The phone rings and rings which is annoying when trying to get a reservation or trying to eat dinner. Simply fix. So refreshing to dine without a TV in your face too ! Will be back.
