We went to Charly's on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. No matter how busy they are, they are always friendly and positive. If there's a wait, I highly suggest waiting because it's so worth it. The bread is fresh baked daily, and you can see your food being prepared. The highlight of Charly's is going on a clear day and watching the planes take off and land while you eat. It's a wonderful experience for the whole family. The portions are filling and prices are extremely reasonable. They also have a decent beer selection of local breweries. There were some hits and misses at my first visit today: Hits: Good bread the sandwich comes on and fun/cool views from the restaurant overlooking the runway. Our server was very attentive when we first got there. She got our drinks and order in right away. Misses: The soup of the day which was a broccoli chicken lacked flavor. I absolutely loved this place. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, a playground outside for kids, planes taking off and landing, and great food. They have a varied menu of salads and cold or hot sandwiches. They make their bread in-house (the Bavarian bread was AMAZING!). All entrees were super reasonable (under $10) and food came out fast. We will definitely be back!! Oh and on the second weekend of October, November, and December they're having a pancake breakfast fundraiser at 8:30am. If we were local, we'd be there! read more

We'll all the times I've spent hanging in the Williamsburg area, I've never seen this place or heard about it. That's a shame. First this is right at the local Williamsburg Airport. Looking over the runway. We ate inside since the weather is a mess today, but they do have patio seating and on a different day that would have been nice. As for the food it was decent. The wifey and I had sandwiches. She a bacon filled BLT which she enjoyed. Me, I had a Turkey and American cheese sandwich with chips. The wifey added a cup of soup. A seafood bisque. Now that was worth a 5 star. It had a great flavor. I'm a bit hard when passing out stars for places. I gave a 4 star but really I would have given it a 4 1/2 if that was an option. As for the service. The young lady ran around at all the tables (maybe 8 tables with customers) and with being pretty busy, she took care of us. She definitely earned her $$$ keeping everyone straight. So I do recommend this place and think it's worth your consideration. read more

A small local airport, this restaurant boasts a scent-sized crowd base of returning customers. It's not your typical dinner spot: its patio-dining and plane-watching! Friend brought over sandwiches to house. I ordered a Portobello which had had before and enjoyed. I opened the take out box and noticed something was different. I realized it had been cut in half which had never happened before. I took a bite and got tomato, lettuce and a vinegar dressing, no hint of mushroom. I opened it and there were a few mushroom slices around the top edge of the bun. I looked at other part of sandwich. I took back and lady at register didn't seem interested. When I explained, She insisted on at least two occasions she had worked there for 10 yrs and that was how they had always been made. We love this place for a simple, tasty, lunch. In nice weather, you can sit outside and watch the little planes take off, but there's indoor seating too. I'm always amazed at how well the restaurant is run. One in the kitchen, one at the register and bussing as needed, and a superhuman server, who handles everything else. I've been there when just two were working, and was shocked at how well service went. Superhuman. The menu is simple, salads, two soups a day (go early before the seafood bisque sells out), and sandwiches on house baked rolls. Get the Bavarian. The white and wheat are good, but the Bavarian is extraordinary. They do a special every day, which has never missed the mark, the salads are fresh, and the regular sandwiches are perfectly balanced. Not too much of anything. If you are wise, you save room for house made pies. I wish they were open an hour later, but they do have evening hours on Friday, weather permitting, with live music (outside). read more

My daughter and I split a reuben that they kindly put on two plates for us. Served on brown bread and pressed to perfection, it hit the spot. The potato salad was creamy and nicely seasoned with just the right amount of dill. Pies are homemade, so we each had a slice--bumbleberry and chocolate pecan. What a wonderful airport cafe. Dan, the owner is pleasant and his meals are filling and tasty. You can sit inside or out with plenty of seating, with an unobstructed of the small planes coming and going. You are literally no more than 1000ft from the runway. There is even a nice Jungle Jim for the youngsters to play, while eating, adjacent to the sitting/eating area. I have to say I underestimated this place and put it off for well over a year. My landlord kept on telling me to go try the food and I was stand offish because it's located in an airport. How could that place serve good food, right? Wrong. 1. The food is absolutely delicious and I missed out for a while as a foodie. 2. Their view is unbeatable, there view from the window inside is an airstrip not only that, they have an outdoor patio with a playground that is flushed with the building and outside patio where you can rest assure to see your children play while you enjoy your meal. 3. Great beer selection offering local beer, general domestic and imports in a can or bottle. 4. Clean and welcoming environment, great wait staff and kitchen staff, with an open kitchen. The ambiance of the airport is really nice. Really pretty view and nice to sit outside. They have a play set for the kids to play on. Sometimes you will see planes sometimes not. That's really all it has going for it imo. Eaten there a few times and the food is extremely mediocre. Last time we ordered burgers and they were totally raw inside. My wife Ann and I and two friends met here on Sunday for lunch. It was our first time. Neat restaurant sitting right on the flight line of the airport. Had a little bit of a wait because the place was BUSY! We sat outside and was served almost immediately. My wife ordered a BLT and upgraded to a seafood bisque. I ordered The Chandler and also the bisque. Our friends had a bowl of chili and The Blue Max. Tea and water were our choices of drinks. The sandwiches were big, fresh and tasty. Best Reuben I have ever eaten! I chose white bread. Bread is homemade and delicious! Also had a salad with ranch dressing. Very good as well. Did not care for the pasta salad. Drove from Poquoson to Williamsburg to eat at this restaurant on Friday, December 30. Called first, but the answering machine had a Covid message and a July 30 date on it. Wanted to make sure it had indoor dining. Drove through thick traffic, probably people going home after Christmas, and arrived at 2:10, they close at 3pm. Saw the menu before we left, never ate there before, but had kept it in my bookmarks for a while now. Salads, sandwiches, etc., so thought salads would be easy and fast. My family of three walk through the door and a guy comes out of the kitchen telling us they were "slammed" and had no bread, so we would need to leave. Wow...first of all, he had no idea what we would be ordering...and treating customers like that, as if you have better things to do, was uncalled for. I said we drove from Poquoson, about a 30 minute drive, which was met with "sorry". So we left, and no big secret, won't ever go back and we will let everyone we know how rudely we were treated. read more

The husband, the puppy and I flew in here from Maryland to enjoy watching other planes while eating lunch on the patio. We had heard good things and that it was dog friendly. Friendly indeed! Everyone, waitstaff and clients alike were so kind and sociable (to us and to our puppy). My husband ordered a very large and tasty prime rib while I had the BBQ sandwich. Husband loves Carolina style BBQ, which this was. I often find it too vinegar-y, but this was just right. GET DESSERT. It's worth it. We split (although I wish I got my own) the coconut cream pie. I said something to the waitress, who happened to be very unfriendly and had a pout on her face. She told the cook about my complaint and he just threw another skimpy piece of gray processed meat into my sandwich. It's still was like I was eating nothing but bread. The coleslaw was just cabbage dripping in red wine vinegar... Very sour. I will not go back to eat there nor will I recommend it. This is the best kept secret of Williamsburg dining. When you come here there are two requirements: 1) Get whatever you're having on Bavarian bread. 2) Get the blueberry pie for dessert. This place usually takes a while with orders and getting the food out, but given the small kitchen/staff it's really understandable. Honestly, this place beats sandwiches at Aroma's, The Grind, Subway, or anything else near W&M/Colonial Williamsburg (although, to be honest, you'd need a car to get there from W&M campus). read more
