Intimate and moody just liked you'd expect for a more upscale steakhouse. The food was good but very comparable to a more inexpensive steak house such as Longhorn. I had the 10 oz ribeye, loaded potatoes and onion rings. It was neat to have them bring the different cuts of steak out and cut in front of you. I was a little disappointed by the chocolate cake as it was 80% mousse. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and am happy I checked it out. read more

What a wonderful experience at the Charolais restaurant! We started of with cocktails and an escargot appetizer while we looked over the menu. It was our first time trying escargot and I must say it was a pleasant surprise. 6 tender snails served piping hot and already shelled in a bath of butter, herbs and a miniature sweet pepper. Served with bread and a few crustini. Delicious! Next, the butcher came by with the butchers cart and explained the steaks being offered for dinner. We opted for the dry aged ribeyes at 12 oz each. While we waited for our steaks to be personally prepared we tried the beautiful looking salad, soup and cheese bar. Soooo good! The ranch dressing tasted homemade! So many item on the bar. You can choose to make a meal of the bar as a stand alone entree if you are so inclined. We had time to finish our salads before our steaks were brought out and they did not disappoint! So tender !nd juicy and served piping hot. So tender you could cut them with a fork! Meaty and flavorful and juicy! They offer several different steak toppers such as mushrooms, demi-glace !nd chimichurri. The chimichurri was just ok for me. I would not order again. But everything else was superb ! We dined here tonight for a birthday celebration which was asked about during the reservation...however you do nothing for the birthday. Next, the server had zero personality....acted as if is was a burden to be working. Then the lobster Mac n cheese was tough. Lastly if you are doing white table cloths and fine dining prices why are you putting butter and steak sauce in plastic ramekins. That doesn't match the price point. We have ate here several times throughout the years. One thing that's always spot on is the apps and that salad bar. That's where the good ends. The service is pretty spotty. They seem to cater to the older clientele more. Last night we had to ask for literally everything for our table, drinks, bread, refills. Now the entrees. I don't know why I keep fooling myself saying "it'll be better next time" but it never is. The steaks have no flavor unless you add things on. Virtually no seasoning on the meat whatsoever. We came here for dinner after a very long day at work and were looking forward to a relaxing evening. We had made a reservation and were promptly seated. We were impressed by the decor of the restaurant. They had a big selection ton of wine which we enjoyed, but there wasn't much choice on the cocktail menu-mostly sweet drinks which in our opinion don't go with a nice steak. To start we both had the salad bar which was bountiful and fresh. We then shared a shrimp cocktail and the steak kebab. The steak was one of the best we have had in a long time. Why not a five star review? Our server was very sullen and seemed quite annoyed that we were even there. It was just not a welcoming vibe in the slightest. This was the fourth restaurant meal we had in the area, and the other three could not have been more friendly. After a very long day, it's just not what we want to deal with grouchy service no matter how good the food is. Looking back at the other reviews, I don't think we were alone in our experience. If this restaurant can change and deliver more friendly and welcoming service, it woukd be a stellar place to eat. Until then, we would probably try a different restaurant. read more

Fancy flair in Hickory! We went on a Wednesday evening right as they opened and were surprised by how many reservations they had for the middle of the week. Nevertheless they were able to seat us as walk ins. I just had a standard house salad but their deluxe salad and soup bar (for an up charge) definitely looked good. What's makes this place unique is they have 2 cuts of steak that they hand cut at your table if you wish. They do have other cuts and full menu of steak isn't your thing. Everyone enjoyed their meals, filet, ribeye, crab cakes and sides. Only complaint was the steaks were a tad dry but the butter topping helped. Overall service was excellent and there is a small parking lot. Despite being fancy looking on the inside, we were in casual clothes and saw other parties come casually dressed. We did see our fair share of what appeared to be corporate dinners as well. Our first trip was wonderful. Our visit last night, friday night left us with a bad taste in our mouths. After driving an hour to get there we were greeted with "we don't have your reservation", then "it looks like you cancelled your reservation". I just acknowledged the text message the night before that we were coming. I showed it to the host. We were then given a confusing explanation about what happened and what was going to happen. We weren't sure that we were going to be seated, we were told our time slot had been filled once we "cancelled" which we didn't. We were seated but we were a little but bummed by this point. The Salad bar was good, soup was ok. My wifes prime rib was so salty she had to send it back, something about someone salting it twice or something while it was being cooked. They brought another one. The Carrot vegetable special to me was very poor , my wife liked it. They looked odd and were semi hard pieces of carrot that looked like mini pumpkins. Our server was good. Anyway it was not what we expected. We paid cash but later saw on the receipt that it looked like we had been charged a 3% credit card fee. We ordered a desert to go. I don't remember what it was. But later when we opened it the desert looked like a cruller donut and it was very dry. Not very good especially for the price. All in all I asked my wife this morning what she thought about our dinner. We both agreed we were a little disappointed and probably wouldn't make the drive again. I felt I had to write a review after being referred here. We've never been here, I'm personally visiting from out of state, but my family lives here now. Our server, I thought might just be having a bad day, but the later we got into our dinner, I realized it wasn't just that. He was border line mean and rude, and never smiled once. He acted like everything was a chore and that asking basic questions was a pain. My grandparents, who are older, would ask simple questions and there was no explanation of how the ordering works as you order the steaks with someone else. I visited last night with friends and this is the best steak in the area. This place has it all, unassuming exterior opens to a modern cowboy feel on the inside with white tablecloths. We happened to go yesterday for a friend's birthday and discovered this wonderful Monday special they have. $55 gets you one appetizer, and two entrees complete with a salad, a side, and bread. INSANE deal! We upgraded our house salads to the salad bar, and I 100% recommend you do the same. This is not some crappy salad bar with pasta salads and the like poured into containers for a crowd; everything is homemade and delicious. They also have 6 different kinds of cheese and 2 homemade soups for you. I enjoyed their cheddar cheese spread and the French Onion Soup. Our steaks were perfect. I did have to send my back to get it to the correct temp, but everyone else's was cooked to temp. The flavor was incredible. We all got fillet, but I was so tempted to get something off of the Meat Cart the wheel around to cut special for you. Next time! We were so stuffed, we couldn't even think about dessert. I was looking forward to our reservation because of all the positive talk about the food & service, however, my group and I thought the food was just okay. We are glad that we went for Queens Feast because we got four courses for $40; the price points on the regular menu seem a bit high for the quality of food. The Bacon Steak was delicious & the Caesar Salad was good. While our steaks were cooked exactly how we asked, they were flavorless - not what you would expect from a high-end steakhouse. The service was dissatisfying and our server was blatantly annoyed and rolled his eyes when a group member made a request. The tables were fairly close together & it was very loud, almost difficult to hear one another. It was also so hot that servers were sweating through their shirts. More than one person in our party commented on the heat & the sweat. Our dinner reservation was at 8 & we were promptly seated. Our server got our drink orders quickly but took a while to come to back for our food orders. We waited 10 minutes between the 1st & 2nd courses, 30 minutes for our 3rd/main course & 35 minutes for our 4th course. Overall it was not an experience that makes me want to go back. We love old time steak houses. Loved the ambiance here, very busy so make sure to make reservations. The bar area is cool, salad bar for me was a little weird these days but it wasn't bad. Had the French onion soup from the salad bar and was ok. Our waitress was great but she kind of rushed us along which was a little annoying. We were trying to relax and enjoy the evening but the waitress kept rushing us, food came out super quick which usually is a good thing but when the main comes minutes after being delivered the appetizer it's a little hard to relax lol. We were lucky and got a 7pm reservation on Friday night at the start of Charlotte's Queens feast week. We chose not to eat off the queen's feast but it was a good option. The menu has good variety but the obvious stand out is their steaks. The waiter was nice made sure we understood everything and did a great job filling our drinks. I loved that he brought out Caesar dressing for me even though it's not on the salad bar. Their Caesar dressing is the best. They offer a salad, soup, and cheese bar and I just didn't think it was worth the up charge. Cheese selection was minimal and for the salad I will just get a Caesar next time. We got the calamari appetizer and it was excellent it had just the right amount of crunch and Thai chili sauce. Can't wait to go back for that. The yeast rolls are fluffy and mouth watering. We both got filet and they were cooked to perfection. It was such a nice place to relax with my husband and really be able to enjoy each other's company. Absolutely an Amazing Experience! It is ALL about the BEEF inside. The restaurant has apparently been around for years, however the inside is newly renovated and all CowboyedUp. We sat at the bar and James took wonderful care of us. They have an amazing old school soup & salad bar. Then after all the treasures there we went straight to dinner. One New York strip and one rib-eye with all the trimmings. Delicious and if that's not enough we had to finish up with their specially made for them Butterscotch ice cream from Utterly Delicious! Went in on Monday for the Marvelous Monday Night and to celebrate our anniversary. The good first - our server, Bryanne, was excellent and attentive. The atmosphere was very nice. My wife ordered the chicken offered on the Monday menu and was very happy with it. The appetizer and salads were also very good. BUT I ordered the petite filet which I willingly paid the up charge for a better steak. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. Wonderful steak house, including a few chicken and seafood dishes. Charolais has been a mainstay in Hickory for over 60 years. It has been recently remodeled, and the place is very nice. Service was wonderful. People were eating and chatting at the full sized bar. A server wheels a cart to the table that has cuts of meats. You can tell him how large a piece you want, and it is priced by the ounces. Many steaks on the menu are 10 ounces. Steaks were cooked on an open grill. My petit steak that I ordered medium rare came out medium, and a medium steak came out no pink. But all were delicious. Most meals include a house salad, one side and fabulous soft bread. Once known for their salad bar, you now get a list of items that can be made into a larger salad for a slight up charge. This is our friends' favorite place. We would definitely return. read more

We ordered the large filets that were absolutely the most tender and delicious steaks- Morton's quality!! Weren't crazy about the escargot {not enough garlic} or the calamari. Hubby and I went for Restaurant Week; it was a prix fixed menu. Drinks- the cocktails were on pricey side, but worth it. The cocktail menu is filled with creative combinations, I chose the Part Time Lover, citrusy , not too sweet and served with 1 huge cube of ice. Both apps were good, nothing I would order as a stand alone. The salad/cheese bar is impressive! Nothing fancy but the basics for a pre steak salad, homemade croutons which can accompany the French onion soup available at the salad bar. The cheese selection is small but plentiful and includes a shredded variety for the soup. We had the aged rib eye and the petite filet. Both were great; generally I do not eat steak but the filet was so tasty that I tasted the grizzle- crispy and full of flavor. The best part was the freshly, baked potato- served with butter and sour cream. The dessert was good;- but nothing spectacular although we took it to go. I have a feeling their non restaurant week dessert menu is very good. We enjoyed the restaurant because of good food, non pretentious atmosphere and friendly service. This is my favorite steak place when I'm on the road. The chefs have consistently grilled my steak to perfection. I love big NY Strips and this place has it. Their onion rings are also very solid. Big fan of their old school salad bar as well. This is a fantastic local dining spot. I make it a point to visit every time I'm in town for the last 8 years.
