Despite having booked a reservation two days in advance, our party of five waited about forty minutes to be seated on a weeknight and the place was not that busy. When asked if we could be seated outside , they said that the wait would be about an hour, although there were four tables open and stayed unused through out the whole time we were there cuz we could see the outside through the window where we were seated. Ordered steak ,it was rare when medium was ordered. After the food was ordered it took the waiter half an hour to come back to tell us they were out of that certain cut of meat. I have had steak that was better at TGI friday's . There are much better steak houses out there. Try Morton's for one. Forget this place. read more

While the food was ok, the service was horrendous . We arrived on time for our 1:30 lunch reservation. We were a party of five and the first customers. We were celebrating our son's college graduation. We were seated promptly,drinks arrived timeless. We ordered appetizers and lunch selection around 1:45 Appetizers came around 2:15. We did not receive our lunch until after 3:30! Many other tables had been served well before us.I spoke with both the waitress and the maitre d ,aroun 2:40 who told me he would get right back to me. He did not and when we were leaving and i asked why he did not get back to us ,he told me he wanted us to enjoy our lunch! I am sure he thought we would make a scene, which we did not. Been to the Chart House a few times, this was the second year a large group of us, couples and singles, went for Valentine's day. We had reservations for 9PM so it would be after a lot of the new couples were out for the night. The bar is a great place to hang out and meet up with everyone, all the other customers were really friendly and laid back. BUT the bartenders, while they can make a good drink are painfully slow and really inattentive. Since everyone got there at different times and some didn't know each other or group was scattered across the bar and everyone had the same problem with the bartenders, extremely slow ad totally disinterested. To the point that we had to leave an open tab to go sit down since the bartenders couldn't be bothered to come back and get paid despite many tries to settle up, had to have our waiter get the bar tab for us. Since it was later in the evening, the bar was not busy enough to justify the delays. When we were seated, which was a reasonable amount of time around our reservation, our waiter Sam, was great, friendly and helpful, especially when he had to tell us they were out of a few things we had ordered, it was the end of the night on a holiday, so that's okay. But the bartender issue kept coming up, it took way too long to get a glass of wine, like an entire course, not some mixologist drink, but a glass of wine, and we had a view of the bar so we know it wasn't the waiter's fault. The food was pretty good, can't recall any issues there, but that's the last time I'll go or we will have a group dinner there, which is a shame because it was becoming a traditional spot, and honestly, it's because of the bartender issue. read more

We had to ASK to see the restaurant week menu (twice), we got stared at like we were unwanted tourists (all Boston natives), and the lunch took the better part of two hours. Shame on management for pretending to participate and making the customers suffer through a lackluster delivery and dining experience. Had the wait staff been more responsive and more excited to serve? I'd be back in a heart beat. I ordered the chowder; tasted awful so I didn't eat it. Food server noticed the bowl had not been touched, asked if I liked it, I said no. That was it. She didn't bother to ask what was wrong with it or if I wanted something else. Also didn't take it off my bill. I ordered the prime rib which was so tough I couldn't cut it and it also tasted odd. Again, the food server didn't bother to ask about it. Ordered a martini and received a short glass with drink full of ice... who on earth serves a martini that way??? Brought this to her attention. I had a 7:45 reservation on 5/20/17, and I understand it was a graduation weekend because I was there for my daughter's college graduation. We had a table for 9, and were seated almost 2 hours later. The manager said what do people expect on such a busy weekend! He also kept saying he'd guarantee we'd be seated in 15 minutes then accused everyone of lying. I did not go up to the reservation desk for an hour because it was too crowded with people who had even earlier reservations. The manager also said we could all sit outside even though it was 50 degrees. By the time we sat we had spent a lot of money at the bar along with other unhappy patrons. Then had a bug in our water which apparently is normal because our server just asked if we needed a new glass. This had been our go to place for special occasions, but not anymore. First of all, while the menu says "dinner", it is open for lunch also. I had lunch there for the first time this week and enjoyed it very much. The seafood was cooked perfectly and nobody was rushing you out. The outdoor seating, both front & back, is very relaxing and the service was friendly. If there was a way I could give a negative star rating for this restaurant I would. While looking forward to enjoying a nice dinner out in Boston, we stumbled upon the Chart House after our trusty stand-by had an hour and a half wait. The interior of the restaurant is charming and the location on the wharf gives you the full Boston Harbor atmosphere. However, the stained table cloths, spilled pepper shakers and chipped glassware are not as welcoming. We started off with wine which took over 15 minutes to receive. Seeing it was a Saturday night and one of the nicest summer days we've had to offer, I wasn't as annoyed with the amount of time it took to receive our drinks. It was busy...people were enjoying the day. After delivering our drinks, our waitress disappeared for another 10 minutes. I was now "this" much closer to starting to eat that soiled table cloth if she didn't make herself visible and take our order. When she finally arrived, I ordered the scallops and a side of the crab/avocado something-or-other , which sounded appetizing but looked like something I'd peel out of an infants diaper. My husband ordered the lobster. It took another 30 minutes to get our food. By this time I judged it best if I began fermenting my own grapes for fear that I'd have a vineyard started before I could get a second glass of wine. When our dinner arrived I checked the floor to see if the rest of my meal had fallen and rolled under the table. I was shocked to see five nickel-sized scallops surrounding something that resembled rice with grass sticking out of it. I understand you pay for what you get, but $30 for something I'd do a better job of harvesting out of the ocean is a crying shame. My husbands lobster seemed average, however I wouldn't write home about it. I wasn't singing and dancing with a top hat and cane doing a soft-shoe across his plate, but it looked appetizing. When I went to cut into my scallops and take a bite-- after over a half hour of waiting for the food alone- I was very disgusted to find my food was cold. The side of crab and avocado (which resembled an infants deposit) was just as cool if not cooler. I called the waitress over to voice my disgust. She assured me she could heat them up for me. I'd already spent over $40 for my meal, the last thing I wanted now was reheated scallops that could bounce off my plate into some unforeseen territory. I told her I didn't want them heated, but I wanted them taken off the bill for being served cold. She informed me she couldn't do this. *Cue the insane, crazy eyes and the attempt I made to lunge across the table at this poor child* This is where my conversation with the manager (used loosely) came into play. Never met the man, don't really care who he is, but his personal interaction in itself would make me never set foot in this establishment again. After a rather 'loud' conversation with this man, he did finally agree to take the charges off the bill. He did offer to make me something else, but by now I was an hour and twenty minutes too long into my stay, I had embarrassed my poor husband past the point of reconciliation, it was time to make our exit. Let's sum this up: Atmosphere- Charming and nautical Service- I suggest bringing your own beverages because you're not going to see your wait staff for marathons of time Cleanliness- Average. However if you're a woman, I'd use the pay toilets outside of the aquarium. At least those are cleaned after every use. I can't say as much for theirs. Quality of Food- you're kidding right??? I ended up getting a $3 pretzel from the vendor on the street that was more appeasing and less stressful than the nonexistent meal that I had at this place. We ate dinner here last evening as we try to do each time we are in Boston. Because it was a beautiful evening we decided to eat outside. Looking out on the bay as the sunset was awesome. We shared a spring roll appetizer and it was nice and fresh. My wife had the surf/turf combo with scallops. The short ribs were wonderfully prepared. I had filet mignon that was so tender I could cut it without a fork. Dinner was great and well worth the price. A few observations. Had to flag down our server to get more wine as after we got our food he didn't return to ask us if we needed anything. A minor quibble to be sure. However I have to say that management needed to review its policy on its hostesses outfits. Both girls skirts were so tight and one of them appeared to be squeezed into both her top and skirt. Ate here yesterday. My son and I ordered the prime rib my husband ordered the coconut shrimp and lobster bisque. I don't know where to start. Lobster bisque. Way too salty with pieces of shell and cartilage my husband had to spit out and leave on the side of the plate. Rice was sour. I don't know how else to describe it. So were my mashed potatoes. Asked for Rare prime rib. It came out to me grey through and through. Sent it back came back quick and was closer the second time but was on a pared down plate different set up than the first. Gave the impression that they couldn't be bothered. The place was empty and they sat the tables next to us first. In an almost empty third floor we could all hear each other's every word. Awkward!!! The tables were so close together the waitress for the table next to us kept bumping into my husband. There were so many empty tables. Why would you do that. The waiter saw all the food left on our plates and never asked if there was a problem. By the end there were so many problems we didn't even say anything. Where would we have started. We have come here multiple times for dinner and lunch with family and friends, each time the food was awesome and the service was on point. The other night my mother-in-law (visiting from out of state), best friend and myself brought my wife here for her birthday. Another friend was supposed to meet us but cancelled last minute so when we got there I let the hostess know we were no longer a reservation for 5. As soon as we were sat it went from a celebration to wtf is this a joke? First off we were sat in a corner right by the stairs which we thought we were thrown to the side. It took awhile for a server to come over and I mean awhile which has never happened before there and the restaurant was not that busy (If you are ever waiting awhile for a server to greet your table trust me when I say it's going to be bad service) A server finally came over with his trainee and it took a nose dive. The trainee was very nice but the trainer kept constantly disappearing. My friend ordered a Corona which was skunked so she sent it back the same with the next one which also got sent back, the mussels were very sandy so we returned those as well. Meanwhile we waited for long periods of time for refills on our drinks, salads and our meals all the while barely being checked on. I like to enjoy my meal and the ambiance there especially for that type of money. You expect a certain level of service and quality of food. I myself am a server so I expect good service I know how I take care of a guest and our treatment was deplorable. Being a server you have good days bad days things can get crazy busy with a million things at once and again it was not busy. So I can be more understanding than non-severs when things take a little longer or there's a mistake, but his meal was just a nightmare. Finally we got a manger involved both the general manager and regular manager came over which was a joke. They acted like they didn't care and didn't do much to rectify the situation. I saw plenty of other severs giving so much better service to their tables that it made me angry. Obviously our server couldn't handle a pick up table on top of his other tables he made that abundantly clear. My wife had a terrible time on her birthday which is very upsetting and I should've known right away that we would've been better off leaving. Was surprisingly disappointed by eating here tonight! This is my second time eating at this particular ChartHouse location and it was not enjoyable. Our server never introduced herself and forgot half the order (chowder and a Caesar salad) we did not have our water glasses refilled and "ran dry" before dinner was over!!! Then our check was brought to us before we even had the opportunity to look at a dessert menu! After asking to see a menu we then ordered the raspberry sorbet, cherry/apple crisp and the mud pie and our waitress forgot our cherry crisp- I had to remind her of it and waited 20 minutes for it to come out and it was COLD!!!! How very disappointing. This waitress was kind but had no idea what she was doing and while this restaurant isn't the higher level of fine dining, paying an average of $40.00 per person, you would seem to expect better service! To top all of this off we had to wait 20 more minutes to flag down a manager to even get our check (which was incorrect!!) ChartHouse was not on it's game this evening, the fish selection is great and they have a wide variety of menu items. However it is loud, lacks service and seems to over charge for the lack of attentiveness. read more

My friend and I ate there around 9pm on a Sunday. I got the Salmon and she got two appetizers - oysters and scallops. Here's my POV: - Salmon: something I'd did at a wedding reception at the local Marriott - oysters: pretty good - scallops: the menu calls them 'divine' but they were anything but. More like oily and lackluster - potatoes with the salmons: cold and stiff - bread: stale and hard. Nearly broke a tooth (kidding, but they were hard!) -service was pertinacious and minimal attention for a tourist area. Sure the menu is pricey, but they should not expect someone with jeans to be cheap. - wine selection: we chose a $30 bottle of wine, but they were out of it. They suggested a $50 bottle of wine no where near the same taste as what we originally selected. We opted against their recommendation and enjoyed our second choice. Final recommendation: not worth the menu price. Frankly, if you want seafood you are better off going to Legal Seafood. If you want overpriced pretentious atmosphere, you've come to the right place! read more

Ok, here I am looking for a good seafood spot in Boston to take my Dad to. I live in Boston, have lived here for the past 25 years...and I still have trouble finding great seafood. Which brings me to Chart House...the last time my Dad was in town I took him here. I'd been once before and thought it was very average but he had never been and loved the location so, I thought I would try it again and see if the first time was just an off night. Not even close. The service was worse, the awful elevator music was just loud enough to be annoying and there were those little bugs that move really slowly, until you try to kill them...then they zoom away only to come back and end up in your cocktail. This is all before the food even came. The food was still very average. This is a location only tourist trap. If you are standing there and starving...walk down the street a bit and go to Legals....or get a hot dog from a street vendor. read more

However, I made 9:00 reservations for the outdoor back patio at the Boston Chart house for this past Saturday. I arrived to find there was nothing available where we wanted. So, we were seated inside under the stairs in the middle of the most high traffic area. We were then kindly moved to the back patio, an hour and a half after we made the reservation for. Once seated, our service was absolutely beyond slow. We didn't receive drinks until 20 or so minutes after sitting down, then food came even slower. Appetizer and our dinners were served at the exact same time. We had to ask staff 3 times for a steak knife. The check came way after we were finished despite asking for it twice. This is simply not acceptable at the kind of restaurant that the Chart House claims to be. Very disappointed and would not recommend to friends and family. read more

I hosted an event here and I was not impressed at all with the service of the Catering Manager. I was told a week before the event that I could not have a "reception" style set up even though all along that's what the event was being referred to as. I was never introduced to my Catering Sales Manager the night I was there, even though she was there the entire time. I believe she didn't introduce herself because she knew I wasn't happy about the set-up of the room. I finally had to reach out to her a few weeks later to get a copy of the bill. Unfortunately our turnout was really low, but the receipt showed large quantities of drinks, and I didn't feel that it was correct. Well I asked her about the charges and she explained that we didn't reach our minimum for the room. This I knew, but it would have been nice if she explained that when she sent the receipt so I wasn't baffled by the number of drinks that were on the receipt. The food was pretty good and the service (except for my contact) was great. The second story room was also nice. Wouldn't recommend having an event here though. read more

I'm writing this review as I sit here with my girlfriend because I felt the need to steer anyone and everyone away from this place. The location is great. There's no doubt about that. However, it does not make up for the awful service. We walked to the hostess stand and waited about 5 minutes for someone to acknowledge our presence. The hostess came over severely dazed and confused like she didn't expect to see us. Once seated, she said she would bring us a cocktail menu. She left and we never saw her again. Several minutes later our waiter strolled over and grabbed the cocktail menu for us after we asked. We ordered two bloody marys, waters, and a tuna tartare dish. It took about 15 minutes to get our bloody marys. Then our app came out. It was not finger food and we weren't given napkins, utensils or plates until we asked for them. The waters came out about 15 minutes after we ordered and asked again. The drinks were good, the appetizer consisted of tough plantains and an okay ceviche. Side note-there were about six unbussed tables the entire time we were there and it was by no means busy. Wish we looked at the reviews beforehand because they were all spot on. I booked a corporate dinner event at the Chart House on a Wednesday night, April 12th. I cannot say enough good things about the staff and team at the Chart House.. our event was about 20 persons that night. The food was outstanding, plated and presented perfectly with all meals coming out on time for all the guests. I had dealt with Darina and Lisa in planning the event, had a site tour and was convinced from the beginning that working with this team would be a great experience. They did not disappoint. While we were walking in that night, another large group was coming in at the same time, and my initial thought was, I hope they can handle this. I have had far too many experiences with corporate dining at other locations that left us wondering where the rest of the staff was. Anna Maria, Dee and Jen were rock stars in terms of service, knowledge of the restaurant history and attentiveness. They all made us feel like we were their only guests. A perfect location on the water and the at the Long Wharf. For any drivers, valet parking a huge plus in Boston. We walked from the Marriott, which made it very easy. In terms of food, I have to say this was the best prime rib that I have had in a very long while. Lemon Herb Salmon and the Chicken Marsala were as equally as good. The topper was the Boston Cream Pie.. a total must have for desert.. the best for sure. I have walked past this restaurant many times on my trips to the harbor and never considered going in based on its exterior appearance and apparently expensive menu. I asked a friend for an affordable steak house in Boston and she recommended Chart House, I decided to give it a try and was delightfully pleased. The inside of the restaurant is absolutely beautiful with old wood ceilings and brick walls.It is an aged building with modern day charm. We arrived right on time for our reservation but our table was not ready. We were directed to the bar which was spacious and had a calm atmosphere. We were able to order our first drinks and review the menu. As an appetizer, we ordered a charcuterie and cheese plate. It was because of this appetizer why I rated this restaurant 4 stars. The brie cheese was cold and the salami and pepperoni were to hard and tough to bite into. Also, they did not give enough bread to accompany the meat and cheese. I will say however the bread they did give you with the plate was phenomenal! It was slightly toasted but tasted like it was fresh off of a campfire, it had a wonderful smokey taste to it, that when paired with the fig spread and hard cheese, was a wonderful flavor explosion. For main dishes we got the filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes and savory shrimp pasta. We contemplated asking for an order of garlic mashed potatoes to take home because they were absolutely incredible. Wonderful flavor that just melted into your mouth. Pair a bite of potatoes with the juice from the filet and we were in heaven. The shrimp dish was tasty as well, the shrimp were massive. I have been to the Chart House twice and each time was nothing short of amazing! From the complimentary valet (which given the weather in New England this is a HUGE plus), to the attentiveness and politeness of the staff, to the amazing food - it was all perfect! I agree the restaurant does have some high priced items, but for it's location, the environment, and freshness it's 100% worth every dime. The first time I went was for a friends birthday and the waiter not only sang her Happy Birthday complete with a candle, but she also had some trouble with the King Crab Legs so he came over and opened/prepped everything for her so she could just dive right in. I went for the second time this past weekend and I didn't think the service could get any better but Tuan proved me wrong - he was one of the BEST waiters I have ever encountered. I am requesting him next time I go back! From start to finish he was amazing! Our glasses were never empty and we were never without a smile! It was a family members birthday and he came out at the end with a complimentary piece of birthday cake AND he took a few pictures for us by the Christmas tree (double thumbs up for him because the pictures came out nice LOL!) read more
