Waited in the bar area for a table, on a Saturday night. We got lucky and picked up a table at 7. We waved a server down for service at 7:30. Not even an acknowledgement in 30 minutes. Our soup and salad came out in 5 minutes. Entrees took 45. We were surprised they were even hot. Devouring the meals in 10 minutes, we had to ask for our bill, and requested it be split between two cards. The bill was split, but ran through the same card for both. The manager came by to do I don't know what. We were so frustrated, we couldn't have cared less about what his resolve might have attempted to be. The valet guy was the highlight of our night; he assured us our car was parked in a dry spot the entire time, apologized for the terrible experience inside, and wished us a good night. Why all the negative reviews? Travelling with my mom, we visited many famous restaurants in Boston - this is one of the best moments on our journey. The short ribs were very delicious- it was very soft and came with great potatoes. The fish and chips were great also, it came with 3 sauces and all tasted very nice. Our favourite of the day was the oysters - we ended up ordering a whole dozen 'cause they were so fresh!! The only downside was the clam chowder - not as good as the place in the prudential tower. Our server was a really nice guy and recommended great local Boston beers for us! The view was also very nice - ships coming in and out - oh the tourist joy. So I tried to make a quick reservation somewhere else; this place had pistachio crusted something on the menu and others were booked, so Chart House it was! The food was ok, but for the price you expect more. My so called pistachio crusted fish barely had an essence of pistachio.....I was disappointed. I really wanted pistachios. The service was also mediocre. Albeit it seemed like she was new, so we let it go (poor girl spilled water on the table next to us). Also there is no view. Lies. I've been waiting to be seated for my reservation for almost an hour and a half. We have spoken to the manager twice and he has assured us he will cover an appetizer for us but ignored our empty drinks. I wasn't with my girlfriends family I would have walked out a long time ago. I too have had delays when going to dinner with a small groups at the Chart House. I've learned to confirm my reservation an hour or two before leaving just so there is no confusion. Take the name of the person you speak with. Any delays I've had haven't been long enough to keep me from this, my favorite seafood restaurant in all of Boston. Get the Crab, avocado, and mango stack appetizer. I think it's the best item on the menu and can't be missed. The lava cake is good, but it's just hot cake right? The seafood has always been fresh and cooked right. The ambiance is really special. The building is old and just reeks of old Boston charm. THIS IS NOT A STEAKHOUSE. There are dozens of great steakhouses in Boston. I don't think this is one of them. Not saying their steak is bad, I've just never had it. I was in charge of my group to pick out a restaurant that could fit the variety of eaters and be accessible for all of our commute. Decided to pick the Chart House since I have been there before at another location in Florida, but heard through other friends that they have enjoyed going to the Waterfront location. We sat upstairs on the top level and found that there was a slight old lady/attic smell to the area. I don't think it was the restaurant itself because there weren't a lot of people eating to create this odor, but possibly the rug because it looked pretty dingy. We first ordered the following... * East Meets West Tuna: Excellent - loved the plantain chips with it. * Crab Stuffed Mushrooms: It was good, but it was in a lot of butter that wasn't needed * Calamari & Friends: Found out that the "friends" part is one fried shrimp and nothing else, so shouldn't be plural. I would suggest adding one more shrimp. Overall, the calamari was very good and we all liked how the dish came with different sauces We then ordered the following.... * Lobster Bisque & Clam Chowder: It was just okay and felt it may have tasted out of a can that you can get at a grocery store * Chopped Salad: Beautifully presented and enough to share if you plan on having an entrée * Beefsteak Tomato Salad: Good, enjoyed the onion rings, but it was drowning in dressing even though the description on the menu states drizzle. For our entrees... * Most of us ordered the NY Strip that was cooked perfectly. I have been a long time fan of the chart hiuse going back to the early 80s when there was more of a Hawaiian atmosphere. The decor was old hawaii and the staff was friendly and inviting! I returned to the restaurant several years later and appreciated their upgraded decor and still enjoyed both the food, service and welcoming engagement. Since that time-I hadn't been back in quite a few years and decided to have a long overdue family dinner there. I was thrilled to see that the decor was still very nice and was excited to kick off a wonderful family affair. I'm not going to go into the many interesting service faux pas that we both witnessed and were a recipient of. I would just like to say that although the food was very good the service was less than pleasurable. I can understand being busy, overwhelmed or even flustered but I would say our engagement with both the hostess and our waiter were less than stellar and made us feel as though we were more of an annoyance than welcomed customers. I will be waiting a bit before I return and hope the next experience will be much improved. read more

Great patio area on a fine summer day. This is where I stopped by a on sunny afternoon during Restaurant Week. It's nice to smell the Boston Harbor once in a while over a meal! I started off with a cup of rich and creamy chowder followed by the main course - crusted salmon garnished with mashed yukon gold potatoes. I wasn't expecting they slab dijon between the crust and salmon so that threw me off. I am not a big fan of the mustard taste so it was a bit overwhelming the way it was prepared. I had to scrap off the layer after a couple bites. For dessert, I negotiated with the polite and professional server to swap it for coffee instead. He was not quick to answer me because he had to ask for permission. I was certainly delighted to see my black coffee arrive! read more

Had reservations for 9 people w 4 kids at 8:15 pm. They were ridiculously overbooked and lied to us about our table being set every 15 minutes for over an hour. We've eaten there before with reservations and a minimal wait. Apparently there's been a change in management. When we asked him why he thought it was ok to make us wait an hour he said "This is America you can do what you want." Legal Seafoods graciously accommodated us in less than 10 minutes, and took the kids orders as we were being seated. Thank you Legal! Before I moved to Boston, I came here with my dad to have a look around... one night we wanted to go out to dinner, and he wanted to to go the Chart House. Not being a fan of chain restaurants, I was less than thrilled, and not expecting too much. However, from the moment we got there, I was proven wrong about chain restaurants (well this one at least...) The service was totally on the ball, and the food was out of this world. Also, being a bit of a history nerd, I really appreciated the building itself, and the amazing condition in which it is kept... The Gardiner Building on the Long Wharf used to be home to the offices of John Hancock, and has been around since the 1760's. The views from the top level of this 4 story building are beautiful, and a great place for dinner! Also, they have a wonderful wine list! read more

Went pretty late at night on a Friday, since Tia's was packed and Joe's on the water stops seating outside at 10:00pm (pretty much never heard anything lamer than that, by the way). We were seated outside and there were still plenty of other diners. The waitress was fine, but they were out of 3 different bottles of wine we tried to order, one of which was not one that people probably order all the time. The food was pretty good, I had the Lobster Bisque and the Lobster Spring rolls, but not amazing. The rolls looked like Legals rolls.. but weren't. So that was sad. Also, I thought the menu was fairly expensive, which surprised me. I also felt like some of the employees weren't treating us with much respect as we dined. I know it was late and they were probably trying to close up, but that doesn't mean turning off lights and banging around/moving heavy metal tables while there are still people eating their dinner. Chart House is a complete disaster. From the unattractive juxtaposition of old colonial and nautical decor with the cheesy, house music; to the severely overpriced food that was Denny's quality served on Disney-Polyonisian plates....DISASTER. My boyfriend's starter of Clam Chowder was Campbell soup quality at best. My appetizer of diced mango, onion, yellow and red peppers mixed with avocado that sat under crab meat was flavorless, dry and had a ring of olive olive around the perimeter of the plate that made as much culinary sense as the house music in a rustic, old-New England sea front Boston eatery. The main courses were equally disappointing. My meal of Ahi Tuna was sub par with dry, luke warm spinach on the side. My poor boyfriend, thinking that a restaurant that charges $30 + a plate, irrespective of being in Boston, had to be able to deliver on their macadamia encrusted Mahi Mahi. Alas.....the Mahi Mahi was dry, the macadamia did not encrust the fish, but rather sat atop it in a glob mixed with something tasting like maple syrup. The poor food was only a part of the awful experience. Paying the check turned into a fiasco. We had called ahead and been told that any number of gift certificates would be accepted at once. So, we enclosed the bill holder with the four cards and cash tip for the total amount to the waitress. Twenty minutes later, only three of the cards went through. Once that happened, the manger came over apologizing and charged us the measly $12 difference. Restaurant management 101: If a mistake happens on the behalf of the staff, the GM or Manager will compensate. He should have paid for that $12 out of his pocket and addressed the problem with his Superior later. Had we not been gifted cards to go to Chart House, we likely would have stayed to our usual haunts with excellent food, service and atmosphere; but we thought, nice gift, let's give it a go. We will always be sorry that we did. Avoid this dining disaster! read more

What a fantastic place! The service was awesome and a huge thank you to Greg for taking such good care of us. We started with the crab stack which was phenomenal then moved on to a lobster bisque. That was a fantastic choice. Greg helped us chose our wine which was MacMurray Ranch Pinot Noir. So good we had two bottles!! Then we had the pan seared scallops served with a wasabi sauce. Wow is all I can say. My other half had the 1.5lb lobster which Greg expertly shelled ! We finished up with the hot lava cake and coffee! The cake was so good I wish we would have saved room for it all! Can't say enough good things about the food and service! Entire staff was exactly what I want in a dining experience. If the wonderful food isn't enough the history is beyond your wildest dreams. Check out the safe where the Declaration of Independence was stored! Overall good but nothing special. Great atmosphere - seems like a great place for a date or nice family dinner. But the food and service from our particular server was mediocre at best. Our family had the calamari appetizer which had great sweet-n-spicy sauce. For dinner we had salmon, mahi-mahi, and the filet. The fish dishes had great portion sizes but overall taste was nothing special. Again good but nothing special. The vegetable couscous was delicious. The filet wasn't as flavorful and slightly over cooked and the mashed potatoes were bland and lacking. We have had much better food for less money. Our server wasn't very attentive and came across as indifferent. I've had more friendly experiences with grocery or ticket clerks than this server. He rarely checked on us, never came back after our food was delivered to check if everything was cooked properly. I had ordered a 2nd glass of wine before our dinner was served and didn't receive it till I was half way through our meal. We also had to ask other staff passing by for water refills. It's a shame because with a few little changes I could possibly rate them a 4 star. read more

I've been here twice thus far. I love there dishes, they have a crab mango ball app that is to die for! Their cocktails are very good and their dinner portions aren't too bad. Service is typically hit or miss and the inside of the restaurant smells like a restroom most of the time. They nailed the outdoor seating, but the food is mediocre: Coconut Shrimp app, Salmon entree and Ahi Tuna were all average. I thought the Crab Cake was good, but a bit small. I'm generally not price conscious since I usually get what I pay for when it comes to food. In this case, I didn't. Chart House was over-priced mediocre food. Super cute pub! We were there on a week night and there weren't that many people-- we were with a group of 4 and one of our drinks was wrong wamp wamp. But it wasn't that big of a deal.The drinks were however super tasty-- someone got the peach ice tea (spiked) it was delicious! The atmosphere was great, there is outdoor seating and the inside looks beautiful with exposed brick + historic charm. Will try the food next time. Our family ate here for dinner and we started off with a few appetizers including the steamed mussels in shallots, garlic, and white wine. This was a good choice for a lot of people to share. The mussels were fresh and the white wine broth was complimentary with the mussels. The crab stuffed mushrooms were baked in a white wine sauce. this one was a little tougher for everyone to split but it was delicious and I liked it a lot. My brother probably would've ate the entire plate if he had had the option. The chopped spinach salad had warm bacon dressing, chopped chicken, chopped egg, bacon, chopped red peppers and avocados. I wasn't a huge fan of this mix, I think I would've preferred it without the red peppers and the heat they brought. But overall, the salad was pretty good. I thoroughly enjoyed my creamy lobster bisque. However, I think the sherry in the bisque was overpowering. But I did note that there were a ton of lobster chunks in the soup. And who doesn't love those soup crackers? I prefer to drop a few in the soup at a time so that I can appreciate the crunch while savoring the taste of the soup. If you dropped them in all at once, you'd be left with a soggy mess towards the bottom of your soup bowl. The macadamia crusted mahi came out with peanut sauce with a hint of Frangelico, mango relish, and soy glaze drizzle. This was my dad's dish, since this is a seafood restaurant he wanted to go with one of the more popular fish dishes and so this was recommended to him. He really enjoyed his dish. Joe ordered the 10 oz prime rib, and I was so surprised at this slab of meat that came out. Joe prefers his meats more rare than I do, so I didn't really try his meat dish but he did like it a lot. Even though I thought he was being a cave-man with his huge cut of meat. Joe and I split a side order of creamed spinach. I don't know about him, but my palette was searching for a break from all the delicious meat juices and the creamy goodness of this side dish was the perfect choice. My brother had gotten the steak and scallop combo dish, which came out with some steak tips and grilled shrimp. He inhaled this thing in a matter of minutes. I tried a bite of his steak tips which I usually don't like because I find them too overdone and chewy, but these were done nicely. Overall, the restaurant had a nice and classy decor about it. I really liked the dark interior and random wall decorations that made it look like we were out to sea. The food quality was ok, but not enough to justify the high prices. read more

Was told it was a pit pie but was a cram liquid with seafood with a puffed pastry on top. Sauce was watery and bland. Puffed pastry had to be cut with a steak knife was so tough. I stopped In last Friday visiting from Fort Worth, Texas. I loved the clam chowder and my stuffed shrimp. I was disappointed the desserts were not made in house but flow in. However, it was still a happy experience. I am fascinated by Boston accents and our waiter was wicked cool and I could listen to him talk all day if possible. While on a very short visit to Boston, my family & I decided to have some dinner here. It was recommended to us by the Marriott Long Wharf down the road. For a Thursday night at 7:00, we had to wait half an hour to be seated (there were 3 of us). To begin, I ordered the lobster bisque. Not bad if you enjoy sherry lined around the bisque, but I wasn't a fan. The bisque left my throat burning after every spoonful. (This was also my first time ever ordering lobster bisque.) For my meal I ordered the Snapper Hemingway with a side of asparagus. The Snapper was excellent & was a very good combination of parmesan-crust and fish. The only negative was the crab meat placed on top of the fish, which was more crab than to my liking. The asparagus was cooked well and tasted average; I've had worse but I've had better. I definitely would recommend the Snapper as it was very tasty! For dessert I ordered the Boston Cream Pie. It was my first Boston Cream Pie ever tasting, and I was impressed. The pie had a good & equal distribution of the chocolate, cream, and sponge cake throughout. The pie was also not too sweet, which I enjoyed. The service was good. Our waitress was a nice Russian girl who gave us good service. She was friendly and did everything a waitress should do. The restaurant itself was also an interesting place. It was an older building and inside was exposed brick and wooden beams on the ceiling. It was a nice & relaxing atmosphere to have dinner for a couple hours. Overall, I'd give this restaurant a 3. The food was good, the service was good, and the restaurant was nice. Nothing wow-ed me particularly about this place and for the price, I honestly expected more. Ambiance was pleasant, mostly older people and tourists since it's summer, but a few couples clearly on "date night". My dad and his wife were in town from Newport Beach, Ca which is where the Chart House originated, so we have always been fans. Service was friendly and helpful. Food: we ordered 1/2 doz oysters which were great. I ordered scallops and braised pork I believe and it was delicious. My dad ordered grilled haddock which he ate every bite and his wife ordered lobster. We all enjoyed our meals and still managed to have room for the chocolate lava cake with ice cream or whatever they call it. The dessert was good, but nothing amazing. Just wanted to say how impressed our group of 6 were with the Chart House and more importantly our waiter Andrew! He was personable, worked hard and fast, and double checked to ensure our order was correct each time. The most impressive part about Andrew was that our table ordered 3 fresh lobsters and Andrew (our waiter) quickly cracked and pulled the meat from all three without any help from other staff. (Side note for CH to consider: when a table orders multiple lobsters other staff to help crack and shell is highly recommended.). If and when we come back to Boston we will definitely come back to the Chart House and ask to be seated in Andrew's section. read more

Couldn't possibly recommend the Chart House more highly. I came here for dinner with my brother and my boyfriend. Our waitress was lovely! I don't recall her name but she had an Irish accent... She was friendly and knowledgable about the menu. In order to assure speedy delivery, she suggested we order dessert in advance because their chocolate lava cake takes thirty minutes to cook. Once we finished our meals it was perfectly ready and tasted incredible. I ordered oysters on the half shell which weren't the best I've had but still yummy. It was the lobster bisque that really stole my heart! Creamy and delicious with just the right hint of spice! The lobster was plentiful and I was in bisque heaven! My boyfriend and my brother both ordered the teriyaki steak which I sampled (of course) and it was delicious as well.
