Have avoided this place in the past because it is part of a chain, I always try to find locally-owned restaurants when traveling...but this was close to my hotel and had such great reviews. I'm glad I went--it did not disappoint! My server was great! Very attentive and accommodating--I like my drinks at specific times with my food and she handled it with ease. She also expedited the order in such a way that I wasn't rushed and/or waiting too long. She did try to interest me in their Landry Dining Club, but was not pushy when I declined. Bread basket was phenomenal! Dark bread, sourdough and homemade crackers with whipped butter. I ordered their "CH" signature dishes for the most part. The Duck Confit Spring rolls were good, but nothing special...could have been any meat in there, the duck didn't "pop." Lobster bisque was outstanding--rich and buttery. My entree was wonderful as well. Beautiful presentation and not terribly huge (since I had already ordered dessert, I was a little worried!). The port glazed sea bass with Gorgonzola risotto was served with cranberries and peppery greens for a nicely balanced dish. Ended with their chocolate lava cake and a cup of decaf. The dinning was great! The only drawbacks were that I had to wait a few minutes for my 7:30 reservation, not too bad, but there were more than a few empty tables. Also, there were a number of not-so-well behaved kids and parents there. I was seated next to a large group seated at 4-5 tables that included crying babies, dad on cell phone, moms standing up between tables talking, woolen shouting from one table to the next, who insisted on singing happy birthday loudly when their dessert (finally) arrived. At another table was a family with two kids who decided that they would keep them occupied by giving them each an iPad--which they were playing on sans headphones, so we all got to enjoy! I am not anti-kid, I have 3 of my own, but there is a time and place...it is not when/where I'm spending $100+ to dine solo. Maybe the staff could separate the families with kids from the couples who were clearly perturbed and institute a "no electronics" policy. read more

our first date was here in 1996. we split a piece of the mud pie. mmmm. i sold my bicycle shortly thereafter so that i could take my girlfriend to dinner. she became my wife sometime later, and i have a bicycle again. the prime rib, spinach salad prepared at the table, views, and service are outstanding. my excellent wife raves about the salads and the salmon. the menus are customized with our names on them during special occasions. the landry select club card discounts have saved us hundreds of dollars over the years. ellen, the general manager, makes rounds to make sure that all of her guests are happy. we love the pace and the space. others love the lava cake. as lava cakes go, it is very good... for us, it will always be the magnificent mud pie...mmmmm. read more

I thought the Chart House chain of restaurants were a by gone from the 80's????!!!! Pleasantly surprised. Great location, lovely views, and really enjoyed the salad bar! Nothing else needed. The atmosphere at Chart House was really great. I loved the ocean view. The food and drinks were good. The crab cake appetizer was not the best, tasted a little fishy. Our waiter Sean was pretty terrible. He checked on us way too often, interrupting serious conversations. A good waiter knows when to check on his customers. He forgot to bring out the steak knife to my cousin and brought out my crab crackers after I got my crab. Also, at the end of our dining experience Sean topped it off with accusing us of basically losing one of the receipts. He made us feel very uncomfortable and stressed. Very irritating. I don't mind spending money on a great meal with great service but I was very disappointed with the service and food here for the prices. I will not be coming back here. read more

The Chart House came highly recommended by friends. My husband and I went there on our honeymoon. We both enjoyed the great views, and amazing food. Three stars for the view, basically. The food is not bad, but nothing to write home (or Yelp) about. It would have been one star (because it was night and we couldn't see much) but the first server was very helpful, and then she said, "Your actual server is taking a break, and I'm just filling in for her." Who takes a break at 7PM on a Saturday night? Well, usually a crack head does. When our actual server finally showed up, she said, "Would you like more bread?" She was starring at the table and there was obviously no bread--or anything else--on the table. Didn't want to jump to conclusions, but that about sized up the situation. I upped my rating to 3 stars because I have a tendency to return to this place and have had good experiences here. Still very pricey. Who knows next time I go it may go up to 4 stars. After getting a recomendation from some friends we tried the Chart House in Monterey. I showed up an hour before the reservation because it was my wifes birthday. I asked for a window seat and I asked if they did anything for a birthday. They said they did. We were seated at a very nice window seat overlooking the monterey bay. The waiter took our orders. I ordered the macadamia nut crusted halibut and my wife ordered the filet mignon with cocunut shrimp. We also ordered the cholcalate lava cake at that time. My wifes dinner was excellent. Filet Cooked to perfection and the shrimp was delicious. My dish on the other hand was dry and almost uneatable, which was wierd because they are supposed to be a seafood resteraunt. Then the waiter came and asked us what we would like for dessert. Since we already ordered the lava cake, which takes 30 minutes according to the menu, I knew there must be something wrong. I mentioned the lava cake and he dissappeared only to come back and say someone else took his lava cake order and if we still want that we would have to wait another 20 minutes. Since I was told it was a must I waited. It was nice looking out the window. I saw a sea otter, a seal, and a dolphin. Pretty cool. We finally got the lava cake and it was pretty good. I don't think I would wait for it again. Nothing ever happened for my wifes Birthday as well. So overall I wasn't happy with the experience, though there were high points and I might go again. I just can't justify more then a 2 for my first visit there. For the price my food was really terrible. I am sure my wife might give them a 3 but I was dissappointed by the service and the food. read more

The service is great! My fiancé and I came here on a Saturday night. I would recommend making reservations because it seems like they get booked pretty quickly. We ordered the Kim Chee calamari, and I have to say that it was so yummy! For my entrée, I ordered the 10 oz prime rib with garlic mashed potatoes. Nothing about the prime rib "wow'd" me. My husband has been hyping up this restaurant since we started dating and taking day trips to Monterey. So for our one year wedding anniversary dinner I thought I'd finally see what he's been raving about. He had always portrayed it has a very upscale, fancy dinner restaurant. The atmosphere does give off that feel however, the dress code seemed more lax then what he has seen in the past. We saw more then a few people in light wash jeans and flip flops which seemed a bit off but whatever floats your boat. We were staying at the Monterey Plaza Hotel so the location was super convenient since it was right next door. We were seated in a booth with a great view of the ocean through the large windows. Our waiter was super polite and everything was basically going well...for now. My husband and I each ordered cocktails but I was a little surprised when I received mine. I'd ordered a pomegranite mojito but was suprised to not recieve a red drink. After my first sip I was even more surprised for no pomegranite taste. I wasn't sure if it was the correct drink or not but it tasted good so I let it go. After that we ordered our dinner which took a long time to come out of the kitchen. While waiting we would've ordered more drinks but the waiter took the cocktail menu (should've left it on the table for us to peruse) so by the time he retrieved it for us and took our next drink order a lot of time had gone by. Then came the food...well not the correct food. My husband ordered shrimp scampi so when a plate of fish and rice comes out there is no guessing needed on whether this is the correct meal or not. Luckily a waiter from another table saw the food (which I think was meant for his table) and started the process of correcting the problem. That also meant more time waiting for my husband to get his correct dish. Once we finally had our food it was fantastic (I had ordered the mac nut mahi by the way). We would definitely come back but only because the food was so great. The receipt was the smoking gun; it listed a mango mojito when I'd ordered a pomegranite mojito so that makes two incorrect orders to our table. I can brush off one mistake, but there should not be two in one night if this really is such an elite restaurant. I was traveling alone on my trip through Monterey and wanted to have a nice dinner. I went into the Chart House, expecting what I had experienced in the past at a Chart House in another city. Whoa...the location of the Monterey Bay Chart House and the beautiful interior clearly was a significant, beautiful improvement compared to what I had seen in years past at other locations. Very warm interior with large windows facing Monterey Bay. It was dinnertime so there was a significant wait. However, in order to be served immediately, I was directed to a tall table (and bar height chair) in the bar. The view was magnificent. I ordered two appetizers: a green salad that was laden with pistachios, strawberries, and blueberries. The salad and drink arrived promptly. Loved the salad. It was excellent. I also had an order of chilled jumbo shrimp (5 of them) that were beautifully presented over dry ice. Very impressive and very tasty, accompanied by a very nice, tangy red tomato sauce for dipping. Two dinner rolls, one dark and one light--with butter--accompanied the meal. Service--I was served by the two bartenders--was excellent. I definitely plan to go back again when I am in the area and will recommend the Monterey Bay Chart House to others. You'll love it! Be advised that you probably should make a reservation ahead (unless, if there are 1 or 2 of you, consider being served at the bar or at one of the bar's tall tables/chairs). read more

My fiance and I visited the Chart House with a friend, scoping it out as a possible wedding reception site. I had requested the information about the restaurant and their private events and was seriously considering the location. We decided to try it out before we decided. In order to sample a little of everything, we planned to order a variety of items from the menu. $200 later (with tip), we escaped. The server was attentive, a little awkward, but kind. We ordered the crab cake to start and were pleased. The meat had a great texture, the sauce was good, and the size was large. Then my fiance and I shared a cup of the "award winning" clam chowder. It was fantastic! You could taste all of the ingredients and it had just the right amout of salt. I would order it again. The entrees were another story. My fiance had the cioppino, which was basically served in a chunky spaghetti sauce. The crab seemed to have been prefrozen and the white fish was more like dry chicken. Not worth the $31, don't bother. I had the Dynamite Mahi. It was a "crab encrusted" mahi with garlic sauce. No, it was a grilled piece of mahi covered in the richest crabby cream sauce that I could ever imagine! The crab is rich enough on its own, it doesn't need a heavy-rich cream sauce. I had to scrape off the sauce to eat the fish. Nice idea, poorly executed. Our friend had the filet with garlic mashed potatoes. He said that it seemed to have been under a heat lamp. The potatoes were barely warm and the steak very blah, he didn't even finish it. Overall, service is great, food is mediocre. Not worth the money that it costs. read more

We ate at the Chart House for our 1st anniversary dinner and everything we had was FANTASTIC. We started with mojitos - i had the pomegranate and the hubs had the mango. Both delicious and smooth. For our dinner, we started with the crab stuffed mushrooms. For our entrees, the hubs had the prime rib and shrimp and I had the shrimp fresca. It was all delicious! And even though we were full, we had the chocolate lava cake and it was definitely a good choice. I don't care how full you are you MUST have the chocolate lava cake. read more

It was a beautiful weekend that my bubby decided to take me out around this place and since we were around, I asked him to take me to the fishermen's wharf. We parked our car near Chart restaurant and he suggest me to try this place out and it was the treat that he been rowing the kayak for me for 3 hours. It was 5 that we were there and was seated right away at the seat near the window. The view was great and the server (Marla) was very concern about us. He was wanting to try the Lobster bisque while I want calamari and friends. so we got both. The appitisers came out together and in no time. The soup was not pleasing, it was a little bitter but the calamari and friends was good. For the Entree part, I decided to get the beefsteak tomato salad and he got Calahan (this was huge) Both of the dishes were great, the steak was well cooked and meaty and juicy. The salad was right portion and we definitely safe our rooms for dessert which the server recommend us to order in advance since it's going to take about 30 mins to bake. It's like a trick for you to decide right after u finish ordering everything to either get it or not. We don't really hesitate on getting it since both of us love chocolate lava cake and yes we go for it :) To our surprise, it comes out perfect and what makes it unique was the toffee crumps that was around. The chocolate was crispy from the outside and soft from the inside with chocolate fudge lava... topped with vanilla ice cream and some caramel+fudge. OMG, we could die for this dessert. All i gotta say here is, safe some room for the dessert, and you will love it here. It's freshly bake and was perfectly right amount of everything. read more

I distinctly remember several things about Chart House though, 1. we were seated in a window corner and the view was beautiful! 2. I ordered an apple martini and while the martini itself wasn't the best I've ever had, there was a granny smith apple slice in it, pretty presentation and yummy alcohol soaked apple. 3. The open salad bar was a little weird to look at. 4. We were propositioned to join some sort of chain rewards program. That's probably why this place was just so-so, it's part of a chain and it has that mall restaurant kind of feel with a view. read more

We were ignored by the hostess as she spoke to a waiter and had to interrupt to be sat for our reservation. We came back after hearing the previous night they had an hour long wait and figured it must be worth trying. The Cocktails were ok, the best one being the margarita we ordered. Our server was very sweet. Our evening took a turn for the worse at our table near the bar, the table behind us began speaking about vivid sexual acts and a man at the bar pressed into our table and knocked one of our guests in the shoulder. Slowly we were surrounded by more and more people standing around us for a sports game. We became increasingly uncomfortable and finally spoke to the manager who was very accommodating and sat us farther into the restaurant. Our appetizers were not great, the shrimp cocktail was a bit to heavy on the horseradish and the shrimp crab tower had almost no shrimp and crab. Our Clam Chowder was alright but nothing to write home about. We then moved to the salad bar which to our surprise had no salad! After waiting 10 minutes for the lettuce to be restocked from bags we picked through the last of the ingredients that were sparse. We finished the night with a good lobster meal, an alright fresh halibut, and a prime rib dinner that came out cold. We were very disappointed with our trip and will not be returning here. The manager and our nice waiter were the only redeeming things about this restaurant. Take our advice and walked the extra block down to the FishHopper. read more

I had the Top Sirloin w/ garlic mash potatoes and vegetables and the wife had the lemon chicken. The steak was tender and very flavorful while the chicken had the exact amount of lemon without being over powering. If you decided to go to this place here is a tip. When your dinner comes out order the "Lava Cake" (this take 30 mins just to prepare). When you receive it you wont be disappointed. A prefect blend of light fluffy cake, ice cream, and hot fudge. Also the ambience is perfect. Upscale and every seat in the house has a panoramic view of the Monterey Bay ocean front. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Monterey. I have lived in Monterey County for 20+ years and I still keep coming back. I loved it so much I held my company Christmas party here this year. Enjoy! read more

Came here Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. Pretty good. One thing I can say is that the salad bar rocks, and the service is great. I had the salad bar and the seared ahi appetizer as my entree. The salad bar... I was super happy because it has everything on it form caviar to fresh fruits and everything you could think of to put on a salad..... mmmmmm. Other guests in my party had prime rib (she was happy) and the seafood Barcelona (i tried it and it was a yummy saffron broth-like cioppino style dish, but saffron-ier...mmmm). We live in PG and have dined at this places many times. Most were good, but the last 2 times were not so good. We made a reservation in advance. When we arrived there, they want to sit us at an "odd table" where the seats were sticking out that many people passing by. So we requested a booth (there were several available), finally they agreed to sit us at a nice booth after 3rd requests. I saw some very good rating, but some were very bad. I guess you will never know what kind of good or bad service you are going to get when you come here. So I suggest you should skip this place and go somewhere else. read more

We went here for a friend's birthday and they do a custom menu that says Happy Birthday ____! if you ask ahead of time. The lobster bisque was amazing. The rest of it was just OK.
