What a disappointment! We recommended this restaurant because of a visit years ago that was great; but this time it was the "pits"!! Wedding going on and that was the excuse for very, very, poor service. On a Saturday night they had NO beer available for our beer drinkers, food was bland and the "chicken" dish had the bone-in Cornish hen sized chicken for $26.00(o yeah, there were a couple of beans in the dish too). I ordered three small plates and none of them came out until after all the others were done eating their main dish. Our water glasses were never refilled, we were never asked if we wanted a second drink, bread basket came with three rolls for six people and half hour later two more rolls. Waitress said she missed the meeting in the morning because she was working at the winery-I think they pulled her in to serve in the restaurant because they were short staffed. My wife and I visited the winery and restaurant on 3/17/2018 and it was pleasurable but there is a few things to work on. First off the staff is great. We didn't meet one person working there that didn't give perfect service. The interior of the restaurant is very 1970's looking. It could very much use some fresh paint and an overall update. The patio looks very nice though it was too cold for us to take advantage of it. For lunch I had the pulled pork sandwich but the the relish that accompanied the pork ruined the entire sandwich. I'm not sure why that is on the sandwich as it only makes the pork taste bad. My wife had the turkey sandwich which was also underwhelming in taste. We both had the grass fed ribeye for dinner that evening and were both disappointed. The steaks were cooked well but were tough to cut/chew and flavorless. I don't think there was any salt or pepper even on the steaks. The salsa verde on the steak is a complete mistake. There is really no reason to try and make something fancy but at the same time make it taste bad. I know grass fed ribeyes are much cheaper than angus grain fed but I thought since it was the most expensive thing on the menu I'd give it a try. We also never received any bread with dinner. We did have an enjoyable time but the food just needs to be stepped up a couple of notches. read more

First, we have been to the Winery several times in the last few years and have enjoyed ourselves each time. It seems things have changed greatly since the renovations. First, our reservation was for lunch and we scheduled it at 1:15 to (hopefully) miss the lunch rush. We were seated at 1:15 but didn't receive our entree for over an hour. This was in a restaurant that was less than half full. The shrimp and grits were good, but I did notice the portions were really small. Only 4 small shrimp and the grits were burnt on the bottom. After lunch, the waitress brought us our check and never even asked us if we wanted desert. We then went to the winery for a tasting. We were very surprised to learn that the wine glasses used during the tasting were no longer complimentary. In the several tastings we had attended previously at Chateau Morrisette, we were always allowed to take the glasses home. I realize everyone is tightening their belt, but these glass were probably made in China anyway at a few cents a piece. Needless to say, we were very disappointed and won't be making the over an hour drive back to the winery in the future. read more

Our experience at the winery was not a positive one. In backtracking just a little we have spent the last 4 Octobers visiting NC and Virginia wineries and we were looking forward to stopping by Chateau Morrisette. I have had their wines before and enjoyed them. We stopped at the restaurant first and our meal was fabulous. Then off to the winery. I went to the tasting bar and was completely ignored. It wasn't a busy day and there were only 3 others at the bar. I asked how the tasting working and was curtly told 3 wines were free. Circle what you want. I did this and as I did the "gentleman" working explained the grapes, the flavors, the methods of fermentation...... to the other 3 guests, completely ignoring me and not noticing that I had finished my selection. One of the patrons left leaving me and another couple who by this time were engaged in a conversation not about wines but dogs, children and grandchildren. Ray or Roy the employee, whose name I could barely see on his nameplate because he was not engaging me, proceeded to tell the couple about his grandchildren, their birthday wishes and request for presents. Reluctantly he poured my first choice of wine. By now another couple arrived and he explained the choices of tasting included 8 wines for $10 or 3 free. Humm, I was never given the choice of paying for additional wines. After I told the gentleman I was ready for my second tasting he poured it, said nothing and walked away explaining to the other 2 couples that he was about to conduct a wine tour and would they join him. At this point I took the hint that my business was not needed and left. Bottom line, there are hundreds of wineries between NC and Va most of them good. They will be getting my business not Chateau Morrisette or in my case Chateau Less ette. read more

We met friends from NC at Chateau Morrisette last night for supper. We drove an hour and they drove nearly two hours to get there. We have had slow service there before, but this was beyond slow. Our waiter was sullen, not outright nasty, but unfriendly and seemed to be unhappy. As a former waitress, I find this inexcusable. You have to be able to set aside your personal problems to provide a good experience to your customers. He barely made eye contact and was hard to catch to ask questions or ask for assistance. We could tell he was busy, but this was more than being rushed and the restaurant did not appear to be that full. It often seemed like he was dodging us. More than once I saw him look at me and quickly turn away when I started to talk or signal him. We had to get up from the table more than once to find him to ask for things as basic as salt. It was nearly an hour after our order was taken before we got our meal, which we finally had to ask for. At no point during this time period did anyone come to tell us what the hold up was or to apologize, though we did see someone who identified herself as a manager go to a table nearby where she appeared to know someone. We overheard her say something about the quail being the reason their food was slow as well. We also had quail, so it would have been good customer service for someone to tell us, too. The adjoining table came in just a few minutes after us, but they were just getting their food as we were finishing ours. Our food was good, but not worth the wait or the price or the sullen service. I will think twice before eating there again and I doubt our friends ever will. So sad, as the views are beautiful and the area is depressed enough that they need the business. read more

A friend and I had a late lunch there this afternoon. We did not have reservations but we're still accommodated. The friendly duo at the host stand took our names and made us feel right at home. When it was our time to be seated we got to enjoy the breath taking views on our walk to our table. The wonderful young blonde boy brought our water to us very quickly and then shortly later our waitress arrived. Unfortunately I'm no good with names (brown hair) but she was absolutely sweet and attentive. I myself can be a very picky eater and also a bit much to deal with but the patience was outstanding. I had the fried green tomatoes and BBQ pork sliders and it was marvelous. The whole experience was truly wonderful and I noticed that our waitress and the other waitress in our dining area (who was also very pleasant) as well as the the rest of the staff seemed to work together as a team to provide everyone excellent care. I will most certainly be returning. From the wine to the food to the beautiful staff it's certainly worth the wait. read more

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants in the area, and I always looked forward to coming here. However, when we came here for dinner a few weeks ago, the food was mediocre at best and the service was slow and lagging. I'm sure they've gone through a few chefs over the years, but the current one is doing this place no favors. The mussels were salty. The stuffed trout wasn't very good and tasted like it had been frozen. I also asked for no bacon, and while it didn't come with bacon, the trout tasted like it still had been fried in it. The wine was good though. We got the sweet mountain laurel. We were seated in a corner of the big dining room. There were a few other guests, but it wasn't crowded. We had to try to get a waitress's attention several times to get refills. Also, our waitress forgot to give us bread, and since we were sitting in a corner far away from the other tables, it was difficult to get her attention without getting up and tracking her. Another waitress other than our own finally noticed we didn't have any bread (20+ minutes in) and had to ask if we wanted some!! Very disappointed. The service used to be friendly and prompt and previous menus exhibited flavorful, fresh, light, and inventive dishes, along with an option to alter dishes for dietary restrictions. Hopefully they can turn this this place around back to what it once was, because it truly was a gem. read more
