You're paying for the location. And it's a beautiful one. But I must be honest and admit we've stayed in nicer places for less money. We arrived Thursday Eve and given directions to where our cottage was. It was one that was across the street away from the main Inn. As soon as we opened the door We were blasted with a wave of heat. Someone had left the fireplace on high and the temperature in the room was literally 97° We immediately called the front desk. My husband had the impression that they thought he was kidding about the actual temperature. They told us they'd send someone from engineering. 45 minutes later we were still waiting for someone to come and assess the situation. We called again and in another 20 minutes the engineer knocked on our door. He couldn't believe how hot it was and told us he didn't think the room would cool down by that night, even with the windows open and the air conditioning crank down as low as it could go. It was probably our mistake not to call the front desk and ask to be moved right away. But thinking back they probably should have offered right away. We opened the windows. Went out to dinner and did receive a call from someone a few hours later while we were out apologizing for the situation and asking us if we wanted to change rooms. We were given the option to wait until we got back, which we did. When we returned it was still really warm in there. So we called the front desk and asked if we could change our rooms. It took a long time for the young man to come get us and bring us to the new room, but in the end we were moved to a nicer cottage. The inn is nice, but we'd probably never go back. The main part of the inn is kind of all show and there's nothing warm about it. Pretentious guests abound. There's a small bar in one of the restaurants that isn't comfortable and they only serve coffee from 7-9 am. There's no breakfast included or cookies or anything nice to snack on. The cottage we stayed in was nice, but old. Weird dresser and no place to put anything. The rooms are not the cleanest. Our bed was missing a spindle in the headboard and there was a tile in the bathroom that kept coming up. The blinds were broken in some spots. It looked shabby. And the area around the pool was really worn. All the cushions on the chairs were stained and mildewed. We didn't have soap in our bathroom and it took us two calls to get it. There's no soap dishes in the bathrooms either which is odd. Overall, it's just not what we expected. The little details and superior guest service just weren't there. read more

***This is for STARS only. The restaurant's food and service was extremely underwhelming is the best way to sum everything up. Service - for a restaurant of this caliber we expected it to be a lot better. However, we had to request even the simplest things such as refilling the water multiple times. (The restaurant was not busy and the waiter even came by and checked on us and never refilled our empty glasses a couple times.) My martini never came out until my friend inquired about it 20 minutes later as well. Silverware was not changed between courses. I ended up using my clam appetizer fork for my monkfish entree as nothing was removed. Furthermore, no one explained our courses when brought out. Usually can be self explanatory, but there were a few items we were not clear on including the cheeses for dessert until we had inquired. In fact, when we asked for an explanation about the menu items, the waiter basically read the description that was already printed. Food - presentation was good. However, it seemed many items were on the dish simply for presentation and added zero value. The main courses were only ok - nothing great and everything was oversalted. (Hence the water refills.) The appetizers were the one redeeming factor of the entire menu. Specifically, the oysters, clams and lobster salad. read more

I had a reservation for dinner for four and a baby. They called to confirm the day before. I confirmed. We arrived five minutes early. The mater'd, Taylor, told me that that my reservation was for 2 people. I confirmed the number and he told me to go outside and he would "come and collect us" someone came to us and took us into the restaurant. never an apology or a comment . He waltzed around the restaurant during our dinner never stopping by our table to check on us or ask about our meal. I spent 750.00 on dinner and this guy, who made us uncomfortable from the moment we arrived never made an attempt to make us feel welcome. This was a terrible experience and I would never recommend this dining room to any visitors. The CBI needs to get a better representative attending to its diners. read more

I took my bf here for his birthday, he has always wanted to go to a claimbake. We were under the assumption it would have been on the beach, but it was buffet style. There was valet parking, which during our dinner they brought the keys, saying they leave when it's raining, this seemed a bit odd. We were greeted by a wonderful hostess and taken to our table. Our server Katy greeted us right away. She was attentive to our needs, and proud it was her second summer working their. Mackenzie was great, making sure our waters and table were consistently clean. We had the lobster dinner, which we enjoyed. I had ordered a cake for his birthday and until I asked about it, no one seemed to have been aware. Katy hurried to find out where it was. Thankfully she found it. One downfall was when the sun went down the no see-ums came out biting us. So over all we enjoyed the service and scenery. read more

We had reservations on a recent Wednesday night for the Beach House Bar for dinner. When we arrived the hostess could not find the reservation and was unapologetic. When I showed her the text message I had showing the reservation she then asked me if I had confirmed, which I told her yes and scrolled down to show her the confirmation. She continued to have an attitude and gave no apology for the confusion. She told us she could sit us at high top near the bar and I said I would prefer a different table given that I had made the reservation over a month ago and it wasn't crazy busy. She was so put out and rude it really put a damper on the evening. I have been going to the CBI every summer for the past several years and I expect much better customer service. This review is for their restaurant only, which is something to be avoided at all costs. The menu is tiny, without gluten free items marked, so there's not many choices; however, I was assured by the waitress that any menu item could be made gluten free. Wrong!!! When I started to order, she told me every time I picked an item that it wasn't gluten free and couldn't be made gluten free. I finally chose a burger, but the bun it was on looked, tasted, and fell apart like an Udi's bun. I know for a fact that there are better options available to restaurants on the Cape (Scargo Lake Cafe gets kudos for their great gluten free bread). How they could charge $25 for a burger and then serve it on an Udi's bun takes a lot of nerve and shows that they don't care about people who must eat gluten free. My mother ordered their fried chicken sandwich, which was very spicy, yet the waitress had told her it wouldn't be. We were also told that even the French fries wouldn't be gluten free so we had to choose a salad as our side dish. Their excuse for a salad is pathetic - it's just baby lettuces with no sauce or anything else in it. Also, bread and butter was never brought to the table, nor was any salt or pepper. But, this is a magnificent old hotel, and they've got a nice drinks menu. This might be a place to go just for drinks and the view. But eat someplace else! read more

My husband and I heard great things about this place... but, its definitely not worth the drive.. There are three restaurants under one roof. Great atmosphere and staging, but the food is just okay. For starters: scallops (delicious) cooked just right crab dip, tasty but salty. We waiting at least 40 minutes... Entrée both came out warm. lobster risotto, lobster, warm and risotto was mushy Ribeye for two medium rare, warm, broccoli rabbit, cold. The last time I stayed at Chatham Bars Inn I thought it was such a beautiful location, and although I came down with food poisoning while I was there and couldn't properly take advantage of their offerings, I did think that it was incredibly kind of them to take off the second night charge for me since I was sick. Due to COVID-19, I was forced to cancel my Las Vegas bachelorette party and reschedule closer to the wedding which was in Plymouth, MA. I had remembered how beautiful Chatham Bars Inn was and decided to book my bachelorette there from Tuesday through Thursday on the week leading up to my Saturday wedding. We paid about $420/night for one of the cottages since I was going to have my puppy. They charged me about $40 per night for having my pup there. the lady on the reservation line told me one night would come out the day of booking the reservation and the rest when I got there, which wasn't true-the entire thing came off on the day I booked-as an FYI. We got there around 1:30 PM and they weren't able to check us in until later so they said they would call me when our cottage was ready. We headed downtown and the valet guys upfront or so incredible. They gave us their card, and give us some recommendations on what to do downtown and how to get there. We ended up grabbing lunch at their beachfront restaurant while we waited for the call that our cottage was ready. Once we were able to check in, our cottage was adorable. The lady at the check-in said that they had upgraded me. I wasn't sure to what because our cottage was super small. I told them before hand that was my bachelorette. When we got to our room there was chocolate covered strawberries there waiting for us which was nice. We really liked the positioning of our cottage. Although it was pretty small, it was right by the hotel and Cabezo in the middle where they do grab and go breakfast and complimentary coffee in the morning. There was a few times that we called down to get some stuff and they kept saying that they would bring and never did, that was kind of frustrating. They were overall, quite friendly about me having my puppy there accept at the pool and for breakfast on the last day. They said that she couldn't come in to the breakfast that was indoors. Prior to that day we were eating outdoors but we couldn't get a table that day. Overall, I didn't really think that CBI went out of their way to make it very special for us, but everybody was nice, and I couldn't help but think there was sort of a judgmental aura around us being there. Maybe it was just me being sensitive, but my girlfriends agreed.We were all older and we're not looking to party on the bachelorette, just relax. we dined at all of their restaurants, went to the pool, went to the beach, took advantage of most of everything they offered excluding the spa. It is a beautiful location with a private beach and good service. I travel for work year-round so I'm used to having a different type of treatment when staying at a hotel so maybe my expectations were too high. read more

We visited this resort for a work function. Upon arrival we found out that our reservation had been inexplicably cancelled. Fortunately they were able to find us a room and I thought the service would be good from here on out. I was wrong. First, if you try to speak with the concierge from your room, good luck! We left a message and called several times...no luck. The front desk wasn't terribly helpful about helping with activities outside the resort either. Next, the restaurant was ok, but they treated my wife and kids so poorly. My children are seasoned travelers and very well behaved in the nicest restaurants all over the world. However, I get it...you don't want kids in your nice restaurant. My wife specifically asked if the restaurant was suitable for kids and she was assured it was. I think they forgot to pass that message along to the waitress who was extremely rude and dismissive. At the end of their meal, where they were not offered the specials, standard bread for the table, or refills on their drinks, my wife had to flag down the manager for the bill. She explained the poor service and he ended up apologizing, but the damage was done. read more

Stopped for lunch - splurging for hubby's 70th. Lovely setting on high porch overlooking the sea. Amazingly great staff! Food was disappointing for the price. Husband ordered jumbo crab cake for $21. Just arrived, here for a few hours and already disappointed. The inn itself is very nice and has great scenery. The hospitality has a lot to be desired and unfortunately soured the start of our trip. We booked with American Express Fine Hotels and Resorts. We look to book hotels that fall under this offering as we have always been treated at a level beyond expectations no matter where we go. We arrived here however and this was not the case. Upon check-in at 3pm, we were told room was not ready (Amex states 12pm check in, when available), ok fine the room was not ready. Got into our room at about 4pm and were told no Amex complimentary upgrades were available because the hotel was "nearly at capacity " as a wedding was going on. They stuck us with a smaller room with a view of the parking lot. Upon calling down to ask if an upgrade would be available tomorrow or the following day (we are here three nights) I was told they would note my request on my reservations and let me know if they could accommodate. I received a phone call a few hours later from the lobby again stating that the hotel was "nearly at capacity" and the amex upgrade tier was unavailable. However they did of course indicate they have rooms available at the non amex upgrade tier that they could give me for an extra $800. I'm reading this as we don't have any rooms we are willing to upgrade you to, we will blame this on capacity issues but if you want to pay more money we will happily accommodate you. I wish they didn't even give me another call as this just left a really bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully the rest of the stay is pleasant. Will update this review upon checkout. read more

My daughters gave their mother (my wife)a gift of a prepaid one night room at the CBI for Mother's Day. When we checked in I was asked for my credit card in case we charged anything to the room. Fine. Nothing was charged to the room. When we checked out we were told everything was paid already and we were all set. I was shocked when a $945 charge from CBI on my credit card. For 3 days I called the accounting department at CBI. No one in the accounting department answers his/her phone. Everything goes to voicemail. No one returns calls. Finally resolved, they charged the wrong credit card; they charged for 2 nights not 1; and, the voicemails in accounting were never returned because the girl in accountIng was out sick. This is how a Five Star Hotel works? I sent email to manager expressing my disappointment and frustration with CBI. Guess what, like my countless voicemails, no response. read more

I grew up spending the summers in Chatham and drove by this hotel many times. I always wanted to have a drink in the summer at the CBI. I was moving to California in August, so on my Memorial Day weekend trip I decided to visit this establishment. My husband and I went around 7pm on a Sunday night. The crowd at the bar was a bit snooty. We took our overpriced drinks and sat out on the Adirondack chairs that overlook the water. It was a nice place to sit for an hour and relax. I think most people would enjoy experience as long as they are prepared for the prices ahead of time. read more

The staff goes above and beyond to make sure that you are happy and comfortable. We had the most relaxing and amazing stay. This is a review of the beachside restaurant and bar, we did not stay at this resort. It is a very appealing resort from the exterior to the views at the actual beachside dinning area. We had a plethora of drinks and the lobster nacho appetizer on this occasion. Although the waiter told us the nachos might not be enough for our party of 6 to split, we did not even finish this shareable appetizer! It had an ample amount of lobster (not more than expected but sufficient for a $31 cape resort lobster starter). We were seated quickly and the overall experience was very pleasant. The views from this location are very nice and we enjoyed the drinks which were strong and worth the price. The wait staff was very kind and attentive. Assuring no one went on with an empty glass. We were looking forward to this vacation. The bathroom in our room was dated and not up to standards of a five star hotel. It had mold on the shower curtain and dirt in the corners of the bathroom. But that wasn't the worst of it, we had crazy people in the next room from us, shouting for 2 nights in a row and threatening to kill each other. The hotel did nothing!!!!!! I was disgusted and scared but it being August high season I could not find another room. read more

This review is specific to the Stars Restaurant where I made a reservation for my wife's birthday on 8/13/21. The service was horrible. I had an 8:30 pm reservation and initially the service was good as we received a drink order , bread, and salad in a time frame that you would expect of such a highly rated restaurant. After that the dinner went completely down hill as we did not see our server, or anyone else, for over an hour. We would have left, and should have, if we weren't starving. Our server finally showed up after 10 pm to take our dinner order. We were offered dessert menus around 10:30 pm but declined . There was only one other party in the dining room when we left at 10:45. Really disappointed. To their credit the management at the Chatham Bars Inn did reach out, via email and a phone call, soon after this review was posted to apologize for our experience. read more

I don't get it. I've stayed here twice now and while the views from the main building are beautiful, that's where it ends. The good: Bed is comfortable. The not so good: The clientele is - for the most part - insufferable. The room is somewhat dated and there is foot traffic right outside your window (don't forget to close the blinds!) The service is either good (mostly at the valet) or unreasonable. Check in at 4pm wasn't adhered to on my first stay and I was late for a board meeting reception. Check out is at 11am and on my second stay I was waiting for a meeting to begin and was not allowed to sit on the porch and order coffee. As an alternative I was given coffee in a paper cup and set to the lobby. For between $500 and $1500 a night, there's got to be a better way to treat guests. I will continue to visit if work requires it but definitely wouldn't spend my own money here. read more

Lovely spa and service but felt pricing once in a service should be more transparent. I had a massage and women asked if I wanted my eye brows done. They needed it and it would save me time later. I was shocked at service desk once leaving an eye brow wax was $45!! That seems extremely steep. I am not from a fancy area so maybe I just didn't know but I typically pay $8...so even $20 seems fair but $45?!? I think they should have said the cost when I was asked. Took forever to even get a server and dinner took so long between courses. Over $500 spent for dinner on 3 and it was awful. It was also my sister and mom's birthday and they did absolutely nothing. This is our first time in Cape Cod. We booked Chatham Bars Inn through Amex fine hotel collection. We stayed at Chatham Bars Inn for two nights, one on my birthday and the other for my baby moon. I can totally understand why there are many extreme ratings for this place. It all depends on who are welcoming you to your stay and how careful the check-in staff is. I'd give 5 star rating for my birthday and 2 star for my baby moon, even they are simply a few days apart, the level of service is completely different. A few highlights to this place: 1. You got plenty staff around you, right from the valet parking, check in, concierge, to staff at dinner tables or grill bar. You can always find someone if you need anything. (Unfortunately they sometimes don't fulfill your need in time) 2. Great location and beautiful view: you got private beach and swimming pool. 3. You got the hotel shuttle and car service. 4. Marlyn is the best: she served our breakfast on Jul 1st. She showed sincere care to us and she constantly checked in with us regarding our food. A few things that annoy me during my stay: 1. We were notified our room is ready, but when we started to settle in some staff came in and performed room service (tucking bed, etc.) 2. We have a 4pm guaranteed check out, some staff walked in at 2:30pm despite we said somebody is in, to get ready for the next guests' stay. They were hanging around our place for the next hour or so just to wait for us to get out. This makes us very uncomfortable. 3. We wanted to go outside at night and we needed a flashlight. The one in our room was out of battery. Along with that we also requested umbrella and slippers (which were provided during my birthday stay), concierge said they'll send someone right in. After waiting for 15 min, we decided to visit the main inn and spoke to concierge ourselves. At this time, concierge said they'll be ready in an hour. The umbrella, flashlight and slippers never arrived... On the plus side, concierge did send a bottle of wine to apologize, but the things we requested and needed the most never came! 4. For lunch and dinner at this place, nobody ever asked for dining restriction, which surprised me. 5. Upon check-in, nobody asked for special occasions, and they'd forget the Amex benefits if you don't remind them. We've travelled a lot and we stayed at different places. I'd say this place is pretty inconsistent in their service. One day you come across with an experienced staff and they'll bring you to the nice table with great view for dinner, next day you'd meet with someone who doesn't care at all and just want to get the check in process over with. read more

This was my first visit to Cape Cod and this hotel was simply gorgeous. We went at the end of October so it was the "end of the season" as we repeatedly heard, but the weather was perfect and as crisp as you could wish for a calendar-like Fall weekend. So I will start off by saying the staff at this resort is amazing and the location is absolutely beautiful. Nevertheless, it seems whomever owns the resort may not be investing the proper cost regarding upkeep of the hotel and cottages. The resort rooms need work and lack attention to detail: rusting, stains, beyond the normal wear and tear. Even the crib that was provided had caked debris/dirt/rust along the edges. It's really disappointing when you consider the cost to stay here during the summer. Guests end up paying upwards of 1k a night (on the low end) expecting a 5 star resort but receiving 2.5 star accommodations. It's really unfair to the employees who are giving their absolute best. read more

Slow service & weak drinks Went to get drinks and apps today and it took over 30 min to order and get drinks once we got our drinks we asked for straws and it took another 15 min to see him again. After that we didn't get straws so we got them ourselves. The mojito was weak and basically water and mint. The waiter never came back and when he did we just asked for the check because we had been there long enough. The people next to us seemed irritated and complained about poor service too. read more

Stuck up staff and rude waitresses. As someone who dines frequently in NY and CT I am experienced with waitresses who have an attitude but, these people took the cake. What is up with making them all wear identical preppy clothing? Also- don't have a wait list if your waitress is going to be a bitch about seating you late. As an ex waitress, don't you want the extra money? You get two stars for atmosphere and for reputation. But otherwise food was mediocre at best (you can get it anywhere nothing that blew me away, also very rude about allergy requests, and it's like the chef forgot the importance of salting his foods) and service was *attitude* central. Also, their wine list is embarrassing. They served flat prosecco TWICE. read more

My experience here has consistently been phenomenal. The food has been spectacular, the service is welcoming and informative, and the location can't be beat. From the moment I arrived with my family, we were treated like royalty. The front desk was courteous and efficient despite the ongoing difficulties with CV-19., and the concierge offered some great tips on local area activities...can you say "Great White Shark Expedition?!?! (Too bad it wasn't available during our visit). The dining reservations are in high demand, due to the virus, so we had to eat outside our desired schedule, but that's to be expected. If you're looking for a true Cape Cod getaway, (and are willing to pay for high level service ) then you should check this place out. read more

We eat at the Beach House Grill several times each summer. It is a lovely location with both beautiful grounds and views. We acknowledge the last of help across Cape Cod, and that was not the issue. The food and drinks were as mediocre as they have ever been. The menu is greatly reduced, which is understandable with lack of kitchen help, but the food was bad. Burgers were dry with little flavor and the chicken bacon wraps we dry as well. Our drinks seemed to have little or no alcohol. Service was good. read more

I came to the veranda with a group of friends for an important birthday celebration and we waited over two hours for our dinner. When we asked the staff what was going on, we were given no explanation. We were offered complimentary bread and butter and a slice of cake for the birthday girl as compensation. When we asked if we could switch the slice of cake for a different dessert we were told they'd have to charge us for it. The wait staff was kind and apologetic but the lack of flexibility and compensation for an important dinner was shocking and honestly, completely disappointing. read more
