I used to love the Chatterbox and was a regular at 2 locations but rude service, bad policies and removal of certain menu items (the Mediterranean burger) drove me away. These guys force parties of 2 people sit at a 2-top table if you want to sit in the back room when they're *not* busy (aka when no one else is there). We walked out last time between this unfriendly policy and the literally sh*tty smell from the bathroom (right by the kitchen, btw). Yuck, much better places nearby. read more

This place is a great place on Tuesday night open mics. I came here with my bf, a musician. We're from out of town but all the regulars were super nice, friendly, & welcoming. Chatterbox was the only bar I visited with regularity during my time in the Twin Cities. Mostly because I love board games, and they usually had great stuff on TV (sci-fi, Bruce Lee movies, etc). The atmosphere is awesome. I don't drink myself, but everyone I've brought here has commented on the quality of the beers offered, including the house brews. The homemade ginger ale and root beer are both fantastic. I've eaten meals/snacks here a couple times, and they were always good, but nothing special. The only downsides are the prices (which seem uncommonly high) and the occasional snippiness of a few of the bar and wait staff. One day I'll make it back here for a six hour game of Risk, and it will be awesome. read more

I've been here once and I had a great experience. I ordered the Pub Burger on the menu, and it was excellent: thick-cut bacon, roasted olives, gruyere, and a curry mustard. A very delicious combination of flavors on a perfectly cooked burger and quality bun. On the side I had roasted red pepper mashed potatoes that were also very good--I am so tired of fries. Their beer list is very extensive. A couple other reviewers cited a very greasy odor in there, and this is definitely true. When you leave, you will smell like you were sitting next to a deep fryer. They might have ventilation issues at this location. read more

The atmosphere was that of a true dive bar but the prices were like a sit down restaurant. The food lacked flavor and was very small portions. Our waitress was annoyed (gave a sigh) when we asked for the beer selection. One of our chairs actually broke while we were there. It also happened to be really cold! We could have handled that part but with the rest of it, it was just another nail in the coffin. Don't go here! We have been to other locations and have been happy but this location was rough. I really enjoy chatterbox for their wine drinks, beer, food, and games. BUT, I learned today from a server that NONE of their soups are vegetarian!! EVEN the Tomato Dill soup, which is stated to be a "vegetarian treat" in the menu---they are ALL made with chicken stock. Apparently the owner of the place is not concerned about misleading customers, despite many, MANY complaints on the issue. Went here because it was the close to where I was and because groupon. It a very old place, and smelled old too. Maybe the furniture?? But came here with my family and I ordered the awesome spinach and artichoke sandwich with fries. Played apples to apples during the down time which was pretty awesome (probably the only reason why there's a 3 star) and got our food. Let me tell you, do not get that sandwich. It's very unsalted and can't even taste the spinach, artichoke and chicken. So bad food. Also, no water refills until I had to ask when the waiter came by and he came back with only ONE glass of water. Like really, I'm here with a family of 10, all of us just came back from hiking, we're hungry and thirsty and you come back with only one cup for me. It's clear all of our cups needed refills. I'd been wanting to check out Chatterbox for a while, but I will NOT be going back and I didn't even get a chance to order anything! On Thursday night, I stopped at Chatterbox thinking I would order a beer and watch the second half of a March Madness basketball game. The place was mostly empty, and there was a TV right in front of the bar. I asked the bartender if they were showing March Madness games at all, and she replied, "No, we don't really do sports here," and then casually walked to the back of the bar to talk to a waiter. I've never felt so unwelcome at a restaurant in my life. From the conversations I've had with friends since, it sounds like the service here has a reputation for being poor. I really wanted to like this place, but such rude service makes me cringe at the thought of ever going back. read more

It's impossible to be this bad by accident. Like other reviewers, I went to this restaurant because I've had good experiences at the Highland location. I'd had a bad experience at this location once before, but figured it had probably been a fluke, and I was willing to try it again. Mistake. It was truly, laughably bad. Poor cleaning, poor service, poor food. We arrived and were directed to sit at a booth on the "bar" side of the restaurant. This area of the restaurant was mostly empty, with lots of extra tables. The booth we were directed to sit at was filthy. The table was greasy, scattered with crumbs and (this is not a joke) a dead fly. We should have just left then, but didn't. Mistake. Our waitress came by shortly after we sat down and brought us some ice water and took our drink orders. My glass was dirty--not just water stains, but actual remnants of the last person's drink. It clearly hadn't even been rinsed, just dumped and refilled. Bits of pulp and small dark seeds floating in the water indicated that the person before me had ordered the strawberry lemonade. (I was relieved when I realised that the dark bits were strawberry seeds; I'd initially thought they were more dead flies.) The waitress brought our drink order, and, upon request, replaced my gross water glass. We asked for another moment to look at the menu. Mistake: she didn't come back for almost twenty minutes. All of our drinks were finished long before we had a chance to even order food. (I'd ordered the house ginger ale, my favorite drink at the other location, but was disappointed: it was weak and watery, and not at all the drink I usually enjoyed.) We did discuss leaving at this point, but were both so hungry that it seemed to make more sense to stay here than to find another place to eat and start the whole process over. Mistake. When our server finally returned to take our order, it took a couple false starts before I was able to request a dish that they weren't out of. I eventually ordered fish and chips. (Mistake.) We never saw our waitress again. Forty minutes later (by then, the slow service was so comical that we were keeping close watch on the time), a different staff person came by and said that our food was on its way. More than an hour after we came in and sat down, we got our food. It was mediocre at best. My companion had ordered wings, and got a tiny, appetizer-sized portion. By process of elimination, I'd ordered the fish and chips, which was awful. The fish was rubbery. There was no vinegar (why even call it "fish and chips" if you're not going to offer any vinegar for dipping? Just be honest and call it fish sticks and french fries), which was disappointing but not surprising. The tartar sauce served in lieu of the vinegar was warm, yellowed, and looked like it had been sitting out for days. I didn't dare eat it. Long after we'd finished eating, someone came by with the check, and quickly disappeared before we could ask for anything. (Our drink glasses had been empty ever since our original waitress disappeared ages ago. We were averaging one sighting of a staff person every twenty minutes, and that's generously including the person who'd initially pointed us to the greasy table in the first place.) Reasoning that it might take another hour for someone to come by and swipe our card for us, we left cash on the table and fled the restaurant. To recap: Restaurant was filthy. It took over an hour to receive our food, which was awful. In that hour+ amount of time, not one person stopped by to refill our drinks, which were mediocre and served in dirty glasses. I've worked in food service. I know things go wrong sometimes. But this was just amazingly, phenomenally bad. I can't imagine it being the result of anything but complete apathy on the part of every staff person working that night. Avoid this place. read more

Horrible. I ordered the 1/2 rack of ribs. So did two others at my table. My ribs had no meat on them including two bones with nothing on them! I ordered the spicy ribs and the other two ordered the bbq. Theirs were night and day different in size and amount of meat. Fries were cold. I love the chatterbox on France. Not good!! read more

Got this delivered via Bitesquad and this is definitely not on them. I ordered late, and I should have known, but the food I got was shameful for what I paid for it. I got the Fish and Chips and the Chicken Fingers. The batter was soggy, they both tasted like the end of the night oil (grew up in the restaurant business, I know what icky oil tastes like), and there were THREE chicken fingers and a tiny fish filet. I chalked it up to a $30 mistake and tossed it. I have eaten AT the restaurant more than once and I would give it the same review. I've never had food that is worth the money I have paid for it. They get by on the novelty alone IMHO. read more

This place has so much potential that it's just that much more disappointing. I've been here at least 5 times, maybe more. Each time hoping my previous experience was just a one off. There's no denying it any more. They are a mess! I even have an unused Groupon, it's that bad. Busy or dead the service is the same, terrible. They have a float system where you don't have an assigned server. In theory I suppose that this means there are more eyes on your table which would equate to better service, nope. The system doesn't work here because their dining area is divided into two unconnected sections (front booths/bar area and then a back dining room. Servers can't see from one room to the next so in my experience you are either completely ignored or badgered by multiple servers in a short time frame. The former is most often the case and there is never a middle ground. The last time we went was the worst. The place was nearly empty and there appeared to be only one server on shift. We were there as a family of four and when the server asked if we had dined there before, my husband informed her that indeed we had but it had been awhile because it hadn't gone well (we were completely forgotten about). She seemed genuinely concerned and assured us it wouldn't happen on her watch. Only AFTER delivering our drink order did she disclose that their fryer was down. Really?? People don't come here for fresh/healthy food. Nearly their entire menu comes from a fryer basket and she didn't think it was important to let us know? We would have come back on a different day. My husband wanted to leave right then and there, but I convinced him to just stick it out. After our food was delivered we didn't see her again until we tracked her down chatting up the bartender in the other room. So yeah... forgotten again. We paid our bill at the bar and left. I've been to this Chatterbox a few times and have always been underwhelmed by the food (average chicken sandwich, average fries, etc.), but I've never felt the need to write a review until now. This past Sunday afternoon, I met with a group and the service was atrocious. Even though we were practically the only people in the entire place, our server rarely came around to our table, ignored our empty drinks, and even ignored us when we tried to call her over to place orders. She completely forgot one person's drink and didn't bring us silverware for our food. It made us feel like it was an annoyance that we were there...her only table in the whole place! The downside to the Chatterbox in Minneapolis is that it's tiny and cramped and seemingly perpetually busy -- they could definitely use more space. I live in CA and come to MN twice a year and twice a year I make sure I come here for the the Hellcat inferno salad and french fries from heaven with dip (ok, my name for the fries not theirs). Interesting food and the games are all retro and awesome. The wacky way the don't assign servers can result in exceptionally bad service or attention nazis all up in your date. Not sure how they get away with the horrible venting system. You WILL smell like a greasy kitchen when leaving... A good retro time overall, friendly staff and good sake bloodies. read more

This place on 35th used to be great - food now-a-days is absolutely awful. No flavor at all in the chicken quesadilla which had pesto on it that could not even be detected. The spinach artichoke dip (used to be one of the better things on the menu) was totally bland. The fish and chips, again flavorless. That it took a very long time for the food to come had made me hopeful that it was being prepared with care and would taste good. However it all seemed like it came straight off the cisco truck and into the microwave. Portions were way too large. It should have been apparant when on a Sunday at noon there was nobody else eating in the joint. The interior of the place used to be super cute but now obviously needs some serious luvin up - table height white scrapes all along the dark navy wall that desperately need repainting, furniture needs sprucing up, carpets pretty gross. Even as dark as it was it felt really sad in there. Waitstaff was nice & friendly - no complaints there. Just took way to long for a meal that left everyone feeling sort of ill and definitely unsatisfied. read more
