I wish I could find something redemptive to say about Chau and the Sapa Power Salad, but sadly it disappointed in pretty much every way. The tofu and vegetables were entirely unseasoned, the latter barely even cooked, and the underlying greens were just dead weight in the flavor department. There were hardly any of the heartier ingredients like nuts and seeds and since nothing was pre-mixed it was almost impossible to get full satisfying the bites. The bowl presentation was entirely impractical for the meal. The accompanying citrus dressing didn't do much as it was overly sweet and quickly plummeted to the bottom of the container. If there was more quinoa (another AWOL ingredient), perhaps the flavor would have clung to the ingredients, but I essentially ended up with a bowl of raw ingredients that I could get from your nearest buffet salad bar. At least the fixings were fresh and the ambience of Granville is an absolute win. Otherwise, spend your money elsewhere. Chau, please put some effort into your food. read more

This place was fine. The employees were nice. I got the pho, which I was stoked for on a cold, rainy day, but it was very disappointing. It was so heavy on anise flavor. And I usually love tofu but for some reason I could not eat it. I started to get nauseas after just a few bites and couldn't make myself eat anymore. My partner's coconut milk soup was better. This place has been a staple of mine for years - I always come here with my mum whenever we are on the island. The branding changed recently, but they still carry many of the same classics that kept us coming back. You absolutely need to try the Golden Temple Soup (turmeric), it is a comfort for me in the fall and winter months! And if you love it as much as I do.. they even sell frozen broth which you can make up at home. I would recommend the rice noodle rolls as well with bean curd. The candlelit soup broth is also delicious. I have been meaning to try more of their offerings, but I always come back to my fan favourite the Golden Temple! read more

This was so good! I had the #8 Rice Fields Bowl and a Coconut Shake. Pictures and menu description do not do justice to how flavourful the bowl was. Besides the delicious sauce and noodles, I really liked what a wide variety of fresh vegetables the bowl contained. I'm not sure if the included cup of broth was meant to be added to the bowl or drank on its own, but I thought it was nice to sip on as a warm side. It was very fragrant. The coconut shake was also very tasty even though my personal preference would have been for it to be a little less sweet. It's still not as sweet as a lot of commercially available drinks, I just like things with minimal sugar. The shake is made with natural, minimally processed ingredients and it shows in the fresh coconut taste. It was cool that it contained big chunks of coconut meat even though some of them were hard to drink directly from the bottle - I had to use my chopsticks on some of them, but I was able to get everything out. The price is quite good for the value. The portions for the bowls are big (I finished the whole thing without feeling like I was stuffing myself, but was totally satisfied after), and the food is really fresh and high quality. I paid less for the bowl than I've paid for many smaller and less impressive meals at sit-down restaurants. The staff here were very pleasant as well. I notice a lot of vendors in the market will try to get me to order when I'm just browsing, even from a distance, but these people gave me space until I actually walked up to the register and made eye contact which I really appreciated. Yum! Healthy and delicious. We were filming on Granville Island and I wanted something healthy and wholesome for the crew. Learned that CHAU has a spot in the market. Called in advance to place our order. The staff was friendly and smart. I called back to add more items before a crew member picked up our meals. A different person picked up but totally knew which order I was referring to. Impressed with their system they use for orders. I was left feeling great that my order will be perfect. The packing job was fantastic, cutleries neatly packed in a bag with napkins too. Food was amazing. We had #11 - if you like coconut milk + fish sauce this is a must have. I love that this spot is fully vegan! It really makes eating at Granville Island much easier. They have freezer items as well which is really convenient if you're a person who prefers cooking at home. The portions are generally decent for the price, and the flavours are good. The food is prepared quickly as well - I ordered four items and they were all ready in around 5 minutes. Golden Temple Soup (5/5) I loved the broth so much! The seasoning was on point and it was incredibly flavourful. There was a lot of ingredients as well like tofu, bean curd, taro, kale, lotus roots, sweet potato, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. There was a lack of bean curd, sweet potato and taro, which was a shame since they were my three favourite ingredients in the bowl. The broccoli, cauliflower and carrots could have been more tender, but the kale was super fresh. You can choose from rice noodles, quinoa or wild rice and I got quinoa. There was a lot of quinoa and I ran out of broth and toppings so I ended up with plain quinoa which was a shame. Tofu Salad Rolls (4.5/5) My favourite part was definitely the peanut sauce, which was super tasty. The salad roll was fresh with a decent amount of filling, though I could have done without the basil. Spring Rolls (3/5) My dad really enjoyed these, but I thought they were just okay. I didn't really like the spring roll wrapper, which wasn't crispy enough for me and was slightly chewy. The fish sauce was okay, but definitely more on the mild side in terms of flavour. Taro Chips with Tofu Dip (2/5) I wasn't a big fan of these. The taro chips didn't taste like much and I wasn't crazy about the taste of the tofu dip either. It was decently creamy though, and was mildly spicy which I liked. In my opinion it was the worst value for the price in terms of both portion and flavour. My favourite item was definitely the Golden Temple Soup by far, but if you're looking for something lighter the salad rolls are pretty good too. read more

The food is fine, but let me tell you about the experience i had with the Operations Manager, Don Hua. I emailed about a bad experience I had at the Granville location, as follows: First, I ordered 2 bowls. I didn't want mushrooms or shallots on mine so my friend said to put them in hers. There was no cutlery that didn't have plastic of some sort, so I found some paper-wrapped chopsticks at another stall. Then, when we went to pick up our food, not only were the containers plastic yet again, but the shallots, mushrooms, and my peanut sauce (which I DID want) were placed in a smaller plastic container instead of directly on the second bowl. When I went back to get the sauce on my bowl instead, the staff used my chopsticks to help pour it, threw them out, and then opened up a pair of theirs so I would have a fresh pair. This kind of behaviour is incredibly wasteful and mindless. His response? "As we are a small mom and pops restaurant we try our best to do what we can without breaking the bank and giving our customers food at a reasonable price... We get in 1000 [plastic] bowls at $17.89. Like I said, we would break the bank and be out of business within 6 months of changing over." I suggested they do it a small piece at a time, because every little change helps. I suggested Chau team up with other stalls at Granville Island market for bulk ordering, since you save the more you buy, and there are several stalls on the island that should be switching over to compostable dishes as well. I was met with excuse after excuse. So, not worth it to Chau to switch over to more eco-friendly containers. As I stated in my email to him, "Vancouver is supposed to be the Greenest city in Canada by 2020." As an earth-lover and proud Vancouver resident, I would love to choose the mom and pop shops over chains like SMAK and Freshii, but if it's going to make my footprint bigger, I will always choose the more eco friendly restaurant. Chau even has a claim on its site that they "take initiative in food security, sustainability, consciousness and education", but you can't claim to be truly sustainable when you buy the least eco-friendly option to save a buck. read more

My sister and I tried this place while we were visiting Granville Island. We were positively surprised by the taste and the texture of the food - the spring rolls were crunchy and delicious, and came with a "fish" sauce with vegetarian ingredients that worked surprisingly well. I also had the power salad, and really enjoyed the coconut dressing and the proportions of the different ingredients in the bowl (I'm not the biggest fan of salad bowls when they're mostly leaves). The portions are quite respectable as well. Unfortunately, it must be said that the Granville Island Public Market food court is a really difficult place to eat. We were there at lunchtime on a Thursday and spent about 20 minutes hovering around looking for seats, and the space is loud and highly cramped in general. I feel bad dinging a point from Chau Veggie for something that isn't their responsibility, but it really does make me want to plan to eat elsewhere next time I'm in the area. read more

I remember my workplace getting catering from here awhile back and I fell in love with their Taro chips! The decor inside is cute. They have a separate bar and the drinks look really good (it was New Years so I was too hungover to try any of their drinks). I tried their turmeric curry, it was savoury with TONS of veggies. It's not really "light" though, more on the heavy curry side.if you get it, try it with rice noodles! The salad roll was Good too the lemon vegan dip is delicious. My family and I went to the Granville Island branch a couple of weeks ago, the menu was enticing but I noticed that most of it had mung beans or bean sprouts and I react badly to them. Like I cant get out of bed the next day because my joints are inflamed kind of bad. So I specifically ordered to omit them and the lady over the counter guaranteed me that. Halfway through my meal I noticed that it had indeed mung beans and been sprouts and I was just so disappointed. No exceptions apparently. I go to the Victoria location all the time. Food is great. I just can't reason with the fact that I wasn't deserving of a glass of water even though I was a paying customer. I've been in the restaurant industry my whole life. I have never treated a paying customer like that. I'm nicer to people that I cut off at my bar. That's not an exaggeration. Delicious. My first meal in Vancouver and it was perfect. We got to the Granville Island Public Market about 45 min to closing, so it was relatively quiet in the building and our food came out quickly. We ordered the namaste fresh rolls, rickety rickshaw bowl, the midnight swim bowl (without mushrooms), and the market side salad. The midnight swim bowl was the star of the show- warm, nourishing, and all the deliciousness of perfectly cooked veggies and tofu. I had a hard time sharing. The market side salad- a papaya salad, wasn't quite what we were expecting. Instead of the tangy lime dressing I am accustomed to- it had more of a lemon citrus dressing. I have eaten here twice and have also looked at the photos of the dishes on their visual menu online; I like the food, but I believe this location really skimps out on toppings (or maybe the other one does too, although from yelp photos of the other location it looks more bountiful in toppings), the "greens" on my dishes thus far, and I have tried two different bowls, have been literally 3 tiny pieces of greens. So then the dish, which looks lovely in the online photos, is literally rice noodles and sauce. It still tastes good but for the price and the visuals online creating false expectations, throw a few more pieces of lettuce and bean sprouts on? I think I counted like 5 bean sprouts today. Sad. I love the crispy spring rolls (as a celiac who lives a no gluten fried anything life, not by choice), and I will continue to buy bowls here because there is not much else around my work that won't poison me. I was told that this location was the same as Victoria drive which I go to often and am never disappointed. I was looking forward to a specific hot Vietnamese coffee and was informed the Granville island location only serves ICED COFFEE. It is currently 6degrees in Vancouver and this location is very cold. It's ridiculous that one location does one thing and the other does not. Hot coffee is December in Vancouver is not unreasonable I think having iced coffee as the only option is f*** ridiculous. I went here seeing that it had many healthy options and the people working were nice. The food was made very quickly. I got the Sapa Power Salad and it was okay. There was no quinoa, cucumber, sesame seeds or coconut flakes. I was very confused.
