An updated review as of 2026. Haven't been since their store was just a tiny one and that was years ago, I'm excited that they have expand their bakery with more seating and love the huge display of bake goods (I didn't get to take a picture of it on this visit but I'll update soon). They are always busy and I don't blame them. Now that I work up the street, I'm making it my mission to treat my staff at work with some of these heavenly goods. Services were quickly, lots of staff and I'm just amaze how fast they work. Food. OMG! It was crispy and fluffy, the layers and THE CUSTARD....I could eat a whole jar of it if I could. Made my staff pretty happy on the sweet treat, and to some a better day. The pastries I got was a mixed berry bateau (2) and (1) Limoncello Tiramisu (DEVINE). Haven't found the perfect Kouign Amann since a private French baker had a pop-up sale in San Mateo 4 years ago. Despite trying so many since then, between here and even Paris, they've just been total flops. It's crazy how many variations there are, from doughy to bready to basically just a croissant. Have to say Chaupain's, which I found at the Cardiff 101 farmer's market, was AMAZING. I wish I had bought more than one; I had just been disappointed so many times, and Paris was the last straw for me lmao! They expanded their store!!! It has now been 3 weeks and they have more seatings inside and outside!!! Really feels like a french café now!!! As a French citizen I approved their baked goods! Their croissant is as authentic as it is in Paris! I am super happy that they came here in San Clemente! They used to only come every Saturday for farmers Market and only have their pain au chocolat, croissants and Quiche but having a café is so much better! We were pleasantly surprised at the expansion of this bakery which now includes indoor and outdoor seating. We haven't had an opportunity to have breakfast or lunch here, but we have tried their sourdough bread and pastries. I purchased a large loaf of sourdough bread for $14 an Apricot Danish and a Chocolate Elfroy Croissant. The pastries here are absolutely delicious with the perfect amount of filling and crisp. This was absolutely the best bakery I hit in San clemente. Far and away the most traditional and artisanal. A great selection of croissants, buns, and sweets adorn the counter. The raspberry cheesecake was divine. I love cheesecake but am very particular, this one passed all the tests. I have been walking by this amazing bakery. They have a great outdoor dining area. Cute decor. The staff are friendly and helpful. You a tell they enjoy where they work. This place is always busy, everyone comes early, before they sell out of items. I purchased a variety of sweet and savory pastries, that I could share with my sister. I ordered: a French onion croissant, a jalapeño cheese croissant, a pecan sticky bun, apple tart, a cinnamon cream cheese bun, and a cold brew coffee with salted caramel foam. The sticky bun and cinnamon cream cheese bun are fantastic. The carmelization is perfection; at its finest. The flaky layers of buttery pastry are superb, crunchy and pillowy. I warmed up the apple tart it was perfect not very sweet with just the right amount of tartness. The onion & jalapeño cheese croissants we had for a morning snack the following day. I love all Chaupains but this one not so much. The location is great and very friendly service. Parking is usually plentiful and overall appeared dog-friendly. One thing that bothered me was their orange juice that I always ordered was not fresh. It's in the fridge and it tastes like it was made a day or 2 ago. Other locations are juicing it on the spot and you can really taste the difference. There was a random hair on my OJ cup--okay whatever it happens. But also my coffee mug had a distinct smell to it like it wasn't washed well. And I didn't enjoy their Chocolate Elroy their croissant wasn't as flakey as other Chaupains. I had a really disappointing experience here. The cashier was extremely rude and completely unhelpful from the start, which set the tone for the whole visit. I tried to place a simple order--a breakfast sandwich without egg due to an allergy--which didn't seem like an unreasonable request, especially since all the ingredients are already part of their menu. Instead of accommodating or even trying to help, the request was met with attitude. When the sandwich finally came out, it was honestly ridiculous. It felt like there was little care or attention given, both in customer service and in preparing the food. Overall, the experience was frustrating and left a bad impression. It's a little helter skelter for service/queuing and self seating. There's no real direction on getting to the counter around people waiting or either checking out the menu or quite frankly, the whole order process. It was kind of uncomfortable. I understand there are "lanes", but it doesn't work. I think the strollers in the way also adds to this. Patrons are quite rude and don't bus their own plates, that said, since it is a problem, outside tables need to be checked by staff more often. Or make clear signs that patrons should bus their own tables out of respect of other diners. I wouldn't call this classic French brunch, but still for what it is, the food was tasty. The eggs in the French omelette did not have the silky texture I would normally expect of a French omelette. The egg whites in the Eggs Benedict were watery/very underdone. The toasted bread used for the eggs Benedict was tough and perhaps stale. The chocolate eclair pastry seemed to have absorbed the moisture or condensation from the display case, so the pastry was not flaky, but instead unpalatably spongy. The melons in the fruit cup were not ripe. The tables on the patio were uncomfortably /extremely uneven. We will not return to Chaupain Bakery, unfortunately. We miss J'Adore Café. read more

I love this place. And, they just renovated, doubling the footprint they had before! A good amount of indoor seating (front and back) and a much larger display case. This is a very popular place for lunch and breakfast and no matter what you get, it's fantastic. I've been coming here for years and I'm thrilled they've expanded their space! They've kept their outdoor patio as well. For those who live in north county San Diego like me, this is an easy 30 minute drive (from Carlsbad/Oceanside). French food done well. Amazing bakery. If eating in, you order at the counter and they give you a number and bring the food to your table. I highly recommend getting something to go as their baked goods are some of the best I've had in the region. Today we had: tuna salad sandwich and the chicken pesto sandwich, both served with a small side salad (with an amazing light vinaigrette!). The tuna salad is fresh and full of chunky celery for a nice bite. It's served with avocado and sprouts on the choice of your bread and it was delicious. The chicken pesto sandwich has the best combination of flavors and is one of my favorite sandwiches here. I just wish the bites of chicken were a little bigger as the small chunks fall out while you are eating- but again, the pesto and Gruyère cheese on the perfectly baked French roll makes this incredible. To go I always get the cinnamon twist and the Mille-feuille (napoleon) because they are divine, but there are so many choices worth exploring- like any of their filled croissants! Staff is friendly and patient. This place is always crowded so I recommend coming early or just after the lunch rush when it's easier to find seating. Our experience started well and we were even given an extra pastry on the house. Unfortunately, something happened with our order of quiche which never arrived. We waited patiently but felt uncomfortable eating while one of our party did not have her dish yet. Had to go inside and politely ask and was questioned. Was told it would take 15 mins and asked off were still wanted it. Bummer. Not a great response or offer. This is where it went downhill. Service is all about being kind and helpful and being genuine. It is hardest when something goes wrong but that's when you really have to empathize and seize the opportunity to make things right. That was not the case in how our situation was handled. Is never easy to try and ask and fix things yourself. Feeling like you've made a mistake or the staff didn't want to help or apologize. Had to wait 15 mins and the last in our party ate alone while we waited. Bummer. Traveling down the coast for this particular restaurant/bakery. Starting off really well and excited, but ended on a bad note. These type of service experiences really deflate and frustrate. Outdoor patio is really nice and spacious. I've always been a fan of their pastries that I buy from my local farmer's market. I stopped by for lunch on a beautiful day and enjoyed the most amazing Shakshuka dish I've ever had. Seriously they perfectly cooked the eggs in the red pepper sauce that is seasoned so wonderfully. The cast iron pan came piping hot with the sauce still bubbling. The portion is large with tasty potatoes and their amazing baguette to dip in the delicious sauce and small fruit side. I'm so happy to have found a place to enjoy my favorite breakfast dish. I also grabbed a bag of their homemade granola that pairs perfectly with their yummy yogurts. I love this cute little cafe on Del Mar. Highly recommend it for a breakfast or lunch date.
