Wow-where has Cheba Hut been all my life? I had popped in last Saturday to grab a quick bite. The atmosphere is so inviting /lots of people and lots of seating A concept I've not ever seen before in a toasted sub sandwich shop-or frankly any brand of sub sandwich location. I ordered a 4 inch essentially vegetarian sandwich. They have 4"-8" and 12" subs available and lots of choices-with unique names -mine was called "the Griefo" along with a make your own option. My sandwich had a couple of different types of lettuce, along with cucumber, red onion, and dill pickles (I requested) on a jalapeño cream cheese base. I was given a stand with the picture on it, and was advised the sandwich would be brought to me . After ordering my sandwich, I stepped across to the bar where I chose to sit on the outside barstools. The bar seating was quite full, but it was a beautiful day with a healthy breeze, so I was quite comfortable. The young lady behind the bar was very prompt in coming by to ask me if I would like a beverage and so I ordered a strawberry margarita. (a note.: they do not have frozen drinks at this time). She advised me it was the first time she had made a strawberry Version Of a margarita-but she did a great job and it was on point!!! shortly I was served my sandwich. (I didn't mention that there are options for bread for your sandwich, and I chose the herb and garlic.) I don't know where they get their bread, but it's delicious. My sandwich was stuffed with ingredients and looked and tasted really great!! What a great introduction to this cute little shop tucked away in a strip center off of W. Hero Way in Leander. In fact, it was so good that last night I phoned in an order and the three of us had it for dinner. I did attempt to use the online ordering system, but it kept notifying me that the restaurant was not taking online orders at that time. I knew it would be very risky to call in the order because I have a couple of people here that are very picky and although we found sandwiches for them, they were going to have to be a lot of alterations!!! However , I did call and a man on the other end of the phone took my order. Giving it was very intense making sure that I eliminated all the items that the two picky people in my household don't eat. In all honesty I didn't expect the sandwiches to turn out perfectly as there was a lot of background noise (sounded like everybody was having a great time there!!!). I was told the sandwiches would be ready in about 15 minutes so when I hung up I proceeded to get ready and drove over there. There is a separate area for to go orders so that is where I went. The young lady who was helping me couldn't find my order, but then I thought to tell her I phoned it in and they kept those orders in a different area up by the cash register. Sure enough there it was ready and waiting. The 8" White Widow was made exactly as requested. My son said the chicken breast in the sandwich had the best seasoning and flavor he had ever had. Next was the 4 inch Pacific blue which is a tuna melt(fresh tuna salad with cheddar cheese) and toasted too perfection. It also had to be altered, but was made just as requested. I had ordered the Griefo w/jalapeño cream cheese along with all the veggies-asked for pickles to be added, which they were! We had ordered one of the desserts, a "Gooball" which was similar to a rice crispy, treat with peanut butter, added and shaped into a ball.... how could that not be delicious???? We were more than satisfied with our sandwiches and divided up the Gooball so we all could have a taste. The perfect bite of sweetness at the end of a meal.!! Cheba Hut is one of the most confusing dining experiences I've had in years because aesthetically? Absolutely immaculate. Walking in feels like somebody fused a 90s skateboard shop, a college apartment with surprisingly good lighting, and an unreleased episode of Adventure Time. The drink cups alone look like Finn and Jake designed them during a side quest. The vibe in there is incredible. Warm lights, fun atmosphere, chill people, music that makes you feel like you accidentally time traveled into a much cooler version of 1998. Unfortunately, the food then arrives like a practical joke from the universe. Now listen -- I LOVE subs. Fresh bread, stacked meats, shredded lettuce, oils and vinegar, the whole beautiful deli symphony. But that night I wanted the pizza sub. Friends... this thing looked like somebody described pizza to a person who had only heard rumors about Italy. It was basically one slice of cheese, four emotionally unavailable pepperonis, a little ham, and what appeared to be a shy whisper of pasta sauce. Fourteen dollars. FOURTEEN. I've seen more generously topped Lunchables. I picked it up and genuinely thought maybe the rest of the sandwich was still loading. Then I tried my daughter's sub, hoping maybe I'd simply chosen wrong. It was better, sure, but "better" in the way a hospital chair is better than sitting directly on concrete. Still wildly mid. Sub-par, yes, and I resent how perfectly that pun applies here. And look -- maybe the bar drinks are fantastic. I didn't order one because they were also orbiting around fourteen dollars and at that point I was already financially recovering from my minimalist pizza sandwich experience. I started to suspect the entire business model is based on customers being too high to ask important questions like: "Wait... did this sub always have this little meat?" or "Am I paying cocktail prices for fruit juice and vibes?" Honestly, I wanted to love this place so badly. The atmosphere is genuinely awesome. It's fun. It's creative. It feels cool in a way most chain restaurants would sacrifice a manager to achieve. But eventually the vibe has to stop carrying the entire operation on its back like an exhausted single mother. Would I go back? Maybe if someone invited me just to sit there and absorb the ambiance while eating a sandwich from somewhere else hidden discreetly in my jacket. read more

Cheba Hut is such a fun and unique spot - I love the whole theme, from the vibe inside to the names on everything (honestly made me want to order more just for the names alone ). I placed a pick-up order right before close and was impressed that everything was still so fresh. I tried a few items to really get a feel for the menu. The Jamaican sub wasn't my favorite - the chicken didn't taste as fresh and it just didn't hit like the other subs. But the Spicy Club and the Italian? SO good. The Spicy Club was definitely my favorite. I also tried the BBQ meatballs - the flavor was there, though I'd skip the melted cheese on top next time since it looked a little odd. The garlic cheese bread, though, was delicious and ended up being one of my favorite things I ordered, I can only imagine it with some Spaghetti oh my goshhhh!! Overall, Cheba Hut has a super cool vibe, a wide variety of subs and munchies, and is definitely worth checking out. I'll be back to try more! I was brought here by a friend who swears by the place. Of course, he loves the 420 vibe, but even if you're not a hippie at heart, these sandwiches and their vibe, will definitely make you as happy as the blunt themes that inspire them! I had the G-13, which was turkey and roast beef and wow...the flavors were so there! I had the need to eat the whole thing after the first bite hit my taste buds. The service was on point. Friendly, and with a smile (and no, they weren't lit in the kitchen!), but it's the type of service you expect from a place that screams AUSTIN! So glad we have them up north here in Leander! Great atmosphere!! I loved their playlist so much and the bartender was great! The kids had a bomb and ate every last bit. They have board games to use which was fun. The kids played Sorry! while munching on delicious subs. I had the Jamaican Red on garlic bread with everything because of the reviews and I love buffalo chicken. It was delicious. I got a "pinner" size which was about a 8-10 inch sub. My husband had La Canna and a Jellyfish from the bar. The canna is also very tasty. Really liked this place, we will back soon! read more

Man, this place is hilariously adorable! I could definitely be friends with whoever came up with this concept. Decor is very thematic. Maybe it is even more appreciated if you enjoy some cheba before visiting Cheba Hut, but I loved it anyways. The half indoor half outdoor bar seems like a genius concept until it hits 100 tomorrow. Then what do they do? I guess I'll have to go back to see! The sandwich options were all really interesting. Someone probably got high and created them, and I'm here for it. My daughters came here a few weeks back and wanted me to experience it. I got La Cana (their version of the Italian) in the Blunt size. (Their 12"). As you might be able to see from the picture, the very thine line of meat stuffed with massive amounts of lettuce left a lot to be desired. I was still hungry after eating the entire sandwich. The satisfaction of the flavor had potential, but kept getting pushed aside by the almost imperceptible protein layer. They do take a little while to make each sandwich, which should lead to a better end product. But the service is friendly. We didn't eat in the restaurant, but it looked like a fairly hip place to eat. Could get a little noisy on a busy night. read more

So glad this place is very close to my house. While my first visit was for a pick-up order, I did enjoy the establishment. 1) Loved the vibe!!! Music was hittin' on all cylinders. Staff was very friendly and seemed to really enjoy their jobs. 2) Full bar - with a seating-window to order from OUTSIDE! #Nice 3) The subs were simply amazing. From the presentation, to the perfect portion, to the actual taste. Wife had the Power Plant - and she absolutely loved it! I had the Ham & Pineapple, and it was #delish. All other sub shops need to be on notice. This place is hands-down thee best in the area. 4) The best part - I only paid about $11/sub (8"). I've been to Cheba Hut in other states and downtown Austin and was surprised to hear them opening a spot in Leander. Honestly welcome as they have a fun concept and some fun subs. The gist is its a weed/stoner themed sandwich shop so the idea is that the subs are oversized and loaded with wierd combos (think Ike's for example). We went to it and they get a lot of things right. Nice ambience, a bar with rotating happy hour and the menu is just as expansive. They bake their own bread and the ingredients are way more premium than other sandwich shops, you can definitely taste it. We got the Kali club in the large size (blunt) which is basically a toasted Turkey/Bacon/Avocado sub with chipotle mayo and some other fixings. As someone who's been to Cheba a bunch of times though I noticed there was barely any turkey in the sandwich. Honestly the ratio of veggies to meat was probably 2-1. Historically these sandwiches have been loaded, that was Cheba huts rep. So unless something changed I was disappointed, especially considering the sandwich was $15, with drink another $3 +tip. Don't get me wrong, it tasted really good. But this seemed out of character for this chain. I'm used to their sandwiches being so loaded we could barely finish them. A fluke? In case you didn't know, Cheba is a slang word for marijuana, but there were no signs of that here except for the big mural across the wall. There were two things that set this off immediately from every other sub shop in Austin and Cedar Park. (1) They bake their own bread - from scratch. Others buy frozen formed sub buns, thaw them and bake them but this place makes them from scratch each day. time to try this new sub sandwich shop. (2) this one has a sit-down bar with beer on tap and wine. I don't drink, so no big deal for me. The subs come in 4", 8", and 12" sizes on either a white or whole wheat sub bun. I got the 8" meatball sub and it was so filling I had to take half of it home with me. The bread was hot and very good and the meatballs were good but they had practically no marinara sauce on them. The result was the sandwich just tasted like meat and cheese. I have never had a meatball sub that didn't include marinara sauce, so I was disappointed. My wife had an 8" chicken sandwich, which she also couldn't finish. The secret is all that bread & extra cheese fill you up and they do put a lot more cheese on their sandwiches than other sub restaurants. She said hers was very good. You deifinitely do get extra cheese but you also pay for it. The meatball sub from Subway is $11.19 for the footlong while it is $15.09 here, so you're paying for that extra cheese plus them making bread from scratch. In my opinion, the meatball sub at Subway is better due to the sauce they use. And to be honest with you, It would be hard for me to distinguish Subway bread baked from a frozen product and this one made from scratch. Yeast dough is one of the few items that is perfect for freezing. I worked at Pizza Hut Express, and the pizza crusts there were frozen & we thawed them and baked them and nobody was any the wiser. Plus here they only offer wheat or white sub rolls, and Subway has about 5 different varieties. This is not a review for Subway. So if you don't like Subway, don't go there. This is just to show the comparison between product and price. You will have to judge for yourself. I've eaten at about every sub place in Cedar Park and Austin and to be honest, it's a damn submarine sandwich; and there's not much difference between any of them. It was OK if not a little overpriced, so I'll just stick with one of the 4 or 5 that are within a block of my house. read more

Located in a brand new shopping center in Leander. Plenty of seating and they have a full bar with daily specials throughout the week. They also host trivia on Tuesdays. The menu resembles munchies references in the food and sizes of meals. If you love spice, I highly recommend the Kali Mist. We came here as a food break while moving. We are glad it's so close to us! I got the plant power sandwhich, my partner got the Jamaican Red (chicken buffalo.) If you're not a Pepsi fan, they do have Kool-Aid, tea options, and even alcohol drinks. We saw they do trivia on Tuesday nights as well, so we can't wait to be back for that! This place is more than just a sandwich shop. They have a really cool bar area that allows you to eat either inside or outside. They also offer some great happy hour specials. When you walk in, you order at the counter. The girl that took my order was really sweet and my order came out pretty quickly. I got the spicy club. I really enjoyed their bread, as it's pretty crispy. The sandwich definitely had some heat, so I had to take some of the fresh jalapenos off of it. read more

Okay, full disclosure that I was a hard sell. They are almost walking distance, it was really hot out, so that's what we had for dinner. I had their Italian sub (12 inch) with added banana peppers, and I must concede that it just became my favorite sub in the area. Jersey Mike's has been my go to sub place (and it still is). But this was really good. They do something where they cut the bread a little thinner and toast it. Very good sub. We ordered pick up, and it was done quickly. So very good service. I tried the original recipe that they have on the board. For me, it had way too many flavors which took away from the French dip. The roast beef itself tasted and looked like cured deli meat. Could it be that I am from the West Coast and our roast beef French dips are literally lots of meat and bread and the Ajou. Would definitely go back have a beer and a Jell-O shot. Was kinda busy on a Saturday at lunch not but not too long of a wait. Clean restaurant, friendly staff, prices about normal for these kinda places. Wife had a pizza style sandwich which she enjoyed, the pretzel bites and cheese bread were good. Only bad thing is the French onion soup; yuck. The onions were not cooked and raw which messed with the flavor. So definitely go give them a try, just skip the soup. read more

This one goes out to one of the bartenders, Dan, who has no business working at a bar (or anywhere else really). In the off chance I got his name wrong, he's an older guy with gray hair and stubble. The level of unprofessionalism was astounding. I was at this location with my wife to watch a basketball game on TV. I asked him if he could change the channel to the specific one and he said sure no worries but proceeded to never do it. I had to ask him a total of 3 times because he was too busy drinking behind the bar and with customers. When he finally did change it, he said "this is the game you want to watch?!" It was a high profile college basketball game and the game on before that was a football game no one cared about. I told him "yes, this is a great game" to which he responded, "At least it's not women's sports or I would've changed it back." My wife was right next to me so I told him to watch his mouth to which he shrugged and said I don't care. A true inconsiderate jerk of an employee. He needs to be fired immediately for not only being a jerk to paying customers, but for drinking on the job. On the other hand, everyone else here is nice and the sandwiches are fantastic. I was so excited to see a sandwich place move into this new plaza that's close to home. I didn't realize until I walked in what the "toasted" referred to but chuckled as I realized the atmosphere of the lobby, seating areas, bar, and menu. I think Marley was playing while I perused the menu board and decided on the chronic- a spicy club, on their garlic bread. The "nug" size was plenty for a moderate lunchtime meal, and wow! The flavor, the crunch of the toasted bread, I was hooked. I've gotten this sandwich several times now, to the delight of my husband, who loves sandwiches. The place has a Rock & Roll atmosphere with contant Cannabis references everywhere, from their name to every place else you look around you. It's a good fit for the Austin area market. There is a large bar and numerous tables with both indoor and al fresco seating. The employees were friendly, hip, and quite helpful. The sandwiches have cute names with, once again, many Reefer references. The combinations were interesting and will no doubt fight a good case of the munchies as the food was very good. The only reason that I didn't give them 5 Stars was because the focus is too much on hype, and for the money, it is smallish, and didn't come close to burying me like a JM's Sub or other competitors would.
