We love this store!! So many goodies from bulk items to wine to specialty food items. We bought all sorts of things including wine, cheese and clearance items that were a great deal!! Fun to shop here and great service from both the cashier and one of the guys in the wine shop! So helpful to find the wines I was interested in. We have shopped for years here. There were always good deals on all kinds of snack foods,and great bulk items from United like flour , oatmeal, rice, etc. Today we stopped in( purposely passed up Trader Joes- that will not happen again) and found the place decimated. Half the store was empty of product and the woman behind the cheese counter reluctantly explained they were switching to all local products, which are all priced higher than other sources. Too bad. We used to spend quite a bit there stocking up on all kinds of great items but today bought only six. No bulk items( What was there was all sugar- gummies and chocolate covered.) So disappointed but that is change for you. It cannot possibly be owned by the same family as they knew what they were doing. read more

Based on other reviews and their website, we were under the impression that this was a tasting place for cheese/wine. Disclaimer: it is not. Think more of a Co-Op grocery store with regular items, bulk sales, and a few shelves of local Vermont goods. They do have a few items out for sampling toward the back, but it's not a "tasting room" by any means. The bulk items are to the right of the store in individual plastic bags, which I thought was a bit odd since most people shop bulk to cut down on packaging. As for Vermont-style gifts, you won't find anything too unique here: they have some syrups and jellies, but most of the stuff can be found in other stores nearby or even the Boston Public Market. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of 2 is because we received very friendly service from the employees. They were able to describe different syrups to us and explain what goes into each type. read more

OMG anyone coming from NY will get reverse sticker shock when you shop here. We actually came for free wine and cheese samples and ended up buying put the store! They carry very healthy, all natural, mostly organic foods. We got a case of Noosa yogurt (12) for $10. In Long Island you would pay $3 for each. We got 3 bags of specialty popcorn for $1.50. Gormet potatoe chips were $1 a bag. The employees were super nice. My mother-in-law who has Alzheimer's, took a whole dish of samples and rather than getting mad.he just chuckled saying, "Usually our dishes don't fly away like that." They have a wide assortment of gluten-free foods all at relatively low cost. We were pleasantly surprised and actually enjoyed shopping here. We were like kids in a candy shop! read more

I spent way too long in this place, lol. A super large area of cheese to choose from. I think it took me over 20 minutes just to go through the cheese. Some hard to find grocery items are upstairs along with other market place items. Downstairs was the wine store. Was impressed with the wine selections with a nice international section as well. I used to love this place . My recent visit was a huge disappointment . Pretty well no good deals . I understand bargains come and go but there was nothing worth buying except oddly kosher foods. What was saddest was how unwelcoming the place is . Staff were useless or hostile . I saw the sole cashier get into an argument with a customer over whether she was of legal age to buy beer . Fair enough but don't be rude . Two staff asked me for help and then weren't able to answer my questions . There are no longer any cheese samples or any samples, customers are no longer allowed in the cooler section and there were almost no chips/snacks for sale . Lots of expensive wines and cheeses as well as products which are cheaper in supermarkets . Who are you kidding with $7 dollar mustard that is at its expiration date ? I can't believe a place like this exists with such an extensive and procured selection of ALL these things. Hugely recommend getting some cheese from the local mongers on duty, and we liked the French vanilla whole bean coffee, and the hot pepper jelly spread (locally made) too. I'd return but without my husband. I wanted to look at every single product available and buy 90% of it. This place is a discount food store that sells items that didn't sell at other stores, but cheaper. Think pasta, rice, gluten free everything, European candy and sweets, sauces, dried meats, specialty jarred and canned goods. I could go on forever. The whole downstairs is discount wine. My husband found the layout to be conjested. If your like my husband, you might be overwhelmed at the number of products and customers. My mom and I had a lot of fun shopping here on our first full day in VT. They have a whole wall of candy, which my son enjoyed, and all kinds of snack mixes, chips, cheese, and wine. You won't find a better selection at lower prices than here. They have special imports, and of course Cabot Cheese. They have a huge selection of wine and beer. It's like going on a scavenger hunt. You never know what you'll find . Yes the wine selection is huge but I love looking for the deals . Strange array of foods sourced from manufacturer bankruptcies, overages, freshness date issues etc. One time we loaded up on premium chips and crackers and whole grain mustard and whipping cream all crazy cheap . They have carried fabulously top quality chocolates and candy deals. And kosher and gluten free products with no rhyme or reason. There are always deals on various cheeses, some which may be overripe . Enjoy the samples. Staff are helpful . They have pre-frozen freezer packs to keep your haul safe on the ride home . read more

The return policy used to be hassle free, like they claim, but the last couple of times I've returned items a manager has questioned me incessantly as if I was trying to pull a fast one on them. I understand strict return policies, but they quite literally have a huge sign that says hassle-free returns within a certain period of time. The food I've returned has been moldy or had holes from mice chewing on the packaging and that seems like a more than reasonable reason to return food. It's so demeaning for the managers to imply that I had improperly stored food or have pests running around eating my food as soon as I bring it home. It's happened more than a few times so I just don't buy food there anymore. The only reason they get one star is because the guy that helps me find wine in the wine shop is so friendly and knowledgable. He's the only reason I'm coming back. read more

I buy so many things at Cheese Traders. Their wine recommendations are always spot on, and as well as their cheese recommendations. It's the best cheese selection in the area, with the best prices too. I also pick up lots of condiments here and at Christmas time they carry specialty foods you can't find anywhere else. And of course the staff... the smiling, helpful staff... these folks ensure a pleasurable shopping experience every time. During the COVID-19 pandemic it has been a huge plus to call in my order, and have it delivered right to my trunk in the parking lot. Alright, so you cannot leave Vermont without bringing home all the spoils the state has to offer: beer, syrup, and cheese. And they have them all right here, conveniently arranged in one market. What I was not expecting this to be was a regular market. In addition to the complete wine and beer store in the basement, they also have your regular grocery items at good prices too. I got three bags of chips for $2.49! Enough to survive the road trip home. They also have a CHEESE DELI where you can buy upscale cheese by the pound, and if CHEESE DELI doesn't sell it, (and I can't imagine why it wouldn't,) then go downstairs and peer through the coolers of craft beers. Loved this place until me and my friend both had bought expired cheese they really need to check expiration dates if they are going to be called a cheese place I live 2 hours away and was very disappointed when I got home and couldn't enjoy what I had bought. This store is awesome - massive wine selection and assortment of snacks and other goodies and decent prices too. The staff is also quite accommodating and friendly. Case in point, I was there early on a holiday morning a while back and didn't realize that they weren't opened for another 15 minutes. Instead of making me wait or ignoring me at the door, they welcomed me in while they were cleaning up and stocking shelves. Very nice! A lot of people go there for the cheese, which, as others mention is just expired or about to expire. I'm weird about cheese and expiration dates, though.. it's purely mental because I know that it's fine but in my head, bad milk products = sour stomach. But that's just me. Don't tell me that it's expired, though, and I'll eat it like it's the last supper! read more

OK, so this is what you have to do though. When you walk in, on your immediate right is a bunch of bagged grains, seeds, and nuts. If you know your price points, go ahead and do a little hunting. Next up on the right is the cheese case. Use your nose to travel down the aisle and pay attention to their well marked discounted cheeses (they will tell you flat out that it's a great deal with comparison prices and they are on point). Don't get the fancy (overpriced) Vermont cheddar just because you're in Vermont. It's ok. Calm down. They have plenty of other imported goods, local products, and pretty much whatever you need to have a fancy dinner party. But it's generally expensive. Now let's head downstairs. My friend was all like "you won't find cheaper wine anywhere besides cheese traders, that's the secret" etc. blah etc. And he wasn't NOT right....but...the discount wine is located BEHIND the staircase. So you have to go down the stairs, hang a left or a right and follow the yellow brick (brown carpet) road around to behind the stairs where you will find several boxes of reasonably cheap wine. But not like...super cheap. Not Trader Joe's cheap/good quality. That said, they have really GREAT wine all over the place downstairs if you are looking for a nice bottle! It's laid out alright, I found it to be a teensy bit confusing but if you spend some time down there focusing on their labeling process and going through the motions, you'll be alright. Downstairs is where it's at in this store. They have one of the nicest and nicely priced wine inventory in the area. I haven't found many other spots with reasonably-priced and tasty Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and Cahors (both wines should be both). The staff is knowledgeable and friendly too. read more

This place is a great stop for anybody that likes cheese. They have a lot of great accompaniments also, but I have found some of the best cheeses at some of the best prices here, and I don't think there will ever be a point in my life when I can try everything they stock. Cheese is undergoing its own micro-producer revolution in America, and this store does a nice job of highlighting the big and small producers and bringing things to market in a more affordable way than, say, Whole Foods, who also has a great cheese selection, but prices it more for the swanky merchandising that takes place. Cheese Traders is a bit more straightforward in presentation, but the staff is rather knowledgeable. Being a fan of most cheeses, I have more experience with the wine staff's wealth of knowledge, and I can say they have taught me as much as anybody about wine. My sister and I are soon to drink a bottle of Rothschild we got here a few years ago. I asked for a bottle meeting certain taste profiles and within a certain price range that would be really fantastic in a few years (mostly because I wanted to buy my sister a really great bottle for her birthday, but couldn't afford one that was really great now.) So... we'll know soon how good their advice was soon, but I do know I indeed can't afford that same bottle now, so they were right on with that side of the arrangement. read more

I have visited this area about three or four times, I always buy cheese at one of the roadside stores on the way home to New York. Today I was lucky enough to find this gem!! The inventory is phenomenal, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Just enough involvement to help you if you want, but not bother you as you browse. They also had a wide array of snacks and food for any sort of clean eating regimen, allergy,etc. there was all so many things on sale. Will definitely visit again when I'm in the area read more

Cheese, bulk baking needs, international foodstuffs, frozen meals, snacks, candy, wine, skin/hair care...I was pretty surprised! I bought whole amaranth (ancient grain whose use dates back to Aztec civilization) in bulk for cheap! This leads me to think that Cheese Traders might serve supplemental to City Market...you can't get amaranth at City Market unless you're willing to buy that 'spensive Mesa Sunrise cereal...which I occasionally do. Was giddy to purchase my first cheese-related bumper sticker at Cheese Traders. I say 'first' with the hope that there will be many to come. I've been shopping at Cheese Traders since the day it opened years and years ago. I have to agree with Jennifer S. on customer service. It's really going downhill, and the wine deals they were once known for aren't as impressive since new ownership. I've been finding wine deals that are as good if not better at local general stores. Yesterday during my trip, I witnessed one of the cashiers scold a customer for putting her wine bottles on the counter rather than getting a basket. He then told her to get her items off the counter and get a basket. While I understand she should have done that in the first place, it could have been kindly suggested rather than rudely shouted with a scowl on his face. Next, he checked my mom through and kept asking if the stuff in the cart was hers too. Again, I understand him asking once, but I'd answered already, and his snapping that he has to make sure because he wouldn't want me to make him have to void items, not cool. Finally, when he rang through my order and took my debit card to run through, he didn't swipe it correctly apparently, so he kept swiping it. I will be checking with the bank tomorrow to make sure only one transaction clears. Then to wave around the debit card while complaining about it not working, making it easy for the person behind me to see the face of the card, again not cool. read more
