What a wonderful little cheese shop that also sources a selection of local Georgian treats. There was an upcoming virtual event that I couldn't make but had called to get more details. I spoke with Mary on the phone. She was very friendly, high energy and helpful. She happened to note the shop hours for the next day during our conversation. Since I had some free time, I decided to frive out there the next day. I had the pleasant experience of meeting Mary (and her curious pooch) in person and she was every bit of the fantastic person that I spoke to the day before. I was the only customer at the time so I was privy to a brief personal tour. I received information on the various products, who made them, where they were made, etc. There was a lot of good choices in the small shop. After much debate I decide on the following items: 1. Goodson Cinnamon Sugar Pecans- delicious light pecan crunch packing a cinnamon punch. My cousin and I devoured this treat in minutes. I should have bought at least 2 bags. 2. Goodson Dark Chocolate Covered Pecans - again with the light pecan crunch. I love dark chocolate - this chocolate was not bitter or too sweet. I really enjoyed these. I wish that I had bought many bags. 3. Spottes Trotter's Spanish Salchichon - I rarely eat salami so this was a risky choice for me. It was surprisingly flavorful and not salty. Again, I opened these to share with family just in case I couldn't eat them - they were devoured. I know that they were bought with the idea of cheese pairing but I put mine in the midst of a cream cheese bagel and loved it. My only regret is probably not buying more. 4. Beehive Cheese Barely Buzzed - This cheese is rubbed with expresso and lavender. I was intrigued. It was recommended for coffee lovers and pairing with berries. Who can resist trying an award winning cheese? At my first coffee opportunity, I sampled a few slices. Delicious. Reminds me of aged cheddar with a subtle flavor...I don't know it came across as basil. Lol. I can't wait to try it with fresh berries. The final selections haven't been tried as of this writing: 5. Thomasville Tomme Raw Cows Milk Cheese. 6. Kenny's Farmhouse Gouda I've always enjoy a good raw milk cheese and a good gouda. I'm looking forward to making something delicious with them. Thus far, my only regret is buying only 1 of each of my choices. I do hope to visit again post covid to enjoy a full in person experience at a tasting/hosted event. read more

Before I tell you about the charcuterie Mary made for me, I have to tell you what a sweet lady she is. A real delight to work with her -- and with a name like Cheese & Mary, you have to appreciate her wit and humor. My first time trying a charcuterie here was getting in on a Valentine's special that we enjoyed as part of our anniversary celebration. It was artfully arranged and contained a mixture of sweet, savory, and hearty bites. Some of the things on the plate, I thought, this is an odd pairing, but when I ate it together, it was really good! She knows what she's doing. I'm a little sad the shop is going to close because it's really charming, but I'm okay with it since she's going to be running a virtual store and taking orders still. read more

After being a part of a remote yelp event where I learned about Mary and her shop, I made an hour-and-a-half trip to visit Cheeses & Mary to meet her and get my hands on that dairy. Tucked away in charming Milton, Cheeses & Mary is a small shop selling a curation of small-batch cheeses and the appropriate accouterment (jellies, crackers, nuts, charcuterie, cheese boards and knives, the occasional home decor piece, etc.) *Note: January is a slower time for the cheese industry (lol, New Years diets), so the shop was not stocked as full as it is the rest of the year.* Even still, I had way more options for cheeses than I could try in one trip. CHEESES: Y'all, I spent over $90 on treat-yo-self foods. Granted, I only bought 2 cheeses for myself then 5 others for friends who asked me to pick something up for them (and a bag of crackers), but what bougie life is this?! Each cheese I asked about and bought was $8-$14. I'll have to update later with my reviews of the actual cheeses I bought, but here's what you'll me from me about later: * **Green Hill Camembert from Sweet Grass Dairy (double cream, bloomy rind) * **Thomasville Tomme from Sweet Grass Dairy (a shop favorite, a "cheese for everyone," and apparently great on grilled cheese sandwiches (as recommended by Mary)) and if my friends let me taste the cheeses I got them, I'll be able to tell you about... * **Asher Blue from Sweet Grass Dairy * Norwood from Kenny's Farmhouse Cheese (a shop favorite) * Apricot ginger chèvre from Mackenzie Creamery ($8 for a small pot of goat cheese with a kind of jam on top) I also got to sample the following (and one more I forgot to make a note of), all of which I loved: * Carpenter's Wheel goat cheese - hard cheese which reminded me lightly of blue and parm * Fredonia from Sequatchie Cove Creamery - Mary said it was similar to a stilton, but it reminded me of Roquefort. Creamy, buttery, salty, moldy. * Barnburner - smoked cheddar with a beautiful deep orange color and creamy consistency in the hardness, this one had a nice smoky flavor I would love to have on a cheese board with other tastes! This reminded me of my childhood somehow, I think because this is how I want all my cheddar to feel and taste like. (Writing this review now, I regret not buying any to bring home with me!) **All double asterisk cheeses were part of the sampler box Mary put together as an optional purchase for guests from the yelp event I was a part of and all of them were highly rated by folks in the Zoom chat. I also have it on good authority that the Get Back Jack pimento cheese from Proper Pepper Pimento is great, which was another yelp event cheese, I just didn't buy it myself this time. Sweet Grass Dairy and Proper Pepper Pimento are Georgia, by the way. Mary loves supporting local makers and small businesses with her work. SERVICE: Mary was wrapping up some wheels she had cut into and gave me bites of everything before putting them away! I felt so cared for, like I was in her own home and she was offering me treats for the journey home. It was like spending time with my favorite aunt. She told me to "drive safe" on my long way home, and it put such a smile on my face. Mary is very passionate and knowledgeable about cheese and especially about the cheesemakers she works with. It's very much out of the way for me, but my time in the shop with Mary felt like a break, a true rest, from the travel and day-to-day. It was lovely chatting with her and getting to learn about the creameries and cheeses in her shop. I asked her about another cheese she didn't carry that I knew nothing about but had seen all over Instagram (Humboldt Fog), and she spilled all the details about why it was so popular. Cheeses & Mary would love to provide you with any special trays and plates, pairings and recommendations, or the usual fancy cheese treats. The shop can also host private events and hosts events like wine pairings that are open to the public. LOGISTICS: There is free lot parking and restrooms are available. The shop is only open to the public (during covid times at least) Friday & Saturday 12:00 - 5:00 PM or by appointment. And, they do ship from online orders! Hands down one of the best small businesses in Milton/Alpharetta. The proprietor loves her business and it shows. She will patiently help you put together the perfect cheese board for even the smallest crowd and her selections are fantastic!
